Hihi! Hope this isnt too out of topic but,
Could I ask what your opinion is on the prohibition of men imitating women? For me, it has always been a prohibition for men to imitate women for deceitful intentions. It confuses me why mainstream scholars and most mainstream islamic websites treat masculinity as if it were set in stone, while historically, it has always been a slippery slope at best.
Whoops got too long! Hope you're having a good day ๐Ÿ’—
As-salamu alaykum, definitely not off topic at all! I agree with your interpretation - I think it's more about deceit in general, or even about men speaking over women/speaking for women. I obviously do not think it is about trans, intersex, genderqueer/nonbinary, gender non confirming, fluid, etc people (I know a lot of those fall under the same umbrella, but I wanted to cover all my bases).
Another thing worth noting, is trans people aren't even "imitating" one gender - trans men are just men, they're not women imitating men. Trans women are just women, they're not men imitating women. Even for the people (trans or cis or otherwise) who do 'imitate' gender, i.e. in drag or cosplay or in acting and performing arts, that's not being deceitful!
Closeted trans people (so men who really do have to pretend to be women, women who really do have to be men, nonbinary people who have to be one or the other, etc) aren't even being deceitful, even though they are "lying" about their gender in a sense. If it's being done for your own safety/comfort, as closeting tends to be, I don't think "deceit" is at all an accurate word to use for situations like that.

In Islamic tradition, Mary has many titles. Here's some I found particularly beautiful and endearing.
adhra, ascetic virgin umm nur, mother of light marhumah, enveloped in god's mercy qanitah, personification of perfect submission to god masumah, the sinless one

iโ€™ve been called a โ€œprogressive muslimโ€ so many times and i am very much not.
iโ€™m just not a Qurโ€™an literalist and have a deep seated mistrust in religious leaders so i actually study my religion and ask questions.
it takes so much effort to sort through the strange and misguided opinions of the โ€œulemaโ€.

No.
Should Islam be criticized more, especially on the left? Yes, absolutely, and if you don't believe me here are some typically ex- but occasionally still practicing Muslims criticizing Islam and extremism.
But does that mean Muslims are all or even mostly like that and that they should be, as you tacitly (or not so tacitly) suggest, forcibly converted?
Hell no.
Many Muslims are the opposite of that.
Antiracist: Inclusive Mosque Initiative and many others listed under 'Progressive'
Feminist: Sisterhood, Muslim Girl.
Interfaith: Jews, Jews, and Jews. That was just some quick Googling, by the way.
Progressive: 1993 Cairo Declaration (signed by 45 OIC members, which therefore, given that there are as of now 57, must include one or more of the following countries: 1) Afghanistan, 2) Iran, 3) Saudi Arabia, 4) Brunei, 5) Mauritania, 6) Pakistan, 7) Syria, 8) Yemen, 9)Sudan 10) Qatar 11) Oman 12) Maldives 13) Iraq, all of which, to some degree, have Shari'a law implemented), Muslims for Progressive Values, previously mentioned Inclusive Mosque Initiative, Hidayah (queer) and the other Muslim organizations linked on that website, etc, etc.
And even if they were...Satmar isn't the greatest either. (No offense to Satmar! But I think that your typical interpretation of Islam is way less problematic than your typical Satmar Judaism interpretation.)
But do I want to see the residents of Kiryas Joel forcibly converted and their religion outlawed?
Nope. No way.
This is Islamophobia at its finest: bigoted, hypocritical, misinformed and plain wrong.

This is a church in France, vandalized by โ˜ช๏ธโ˜ช๏ธโ˜ช๏ธ. I've no doubt the โ˜ช๏ธโ˜ช๏ธโ˜ช๏ธ also attacked Notre Dame and numerous other historic cathedrals and synagogues all over Europe.
The graffiti reads: "Allah is great" and "fuck Jesus."
This colonial absolutist racist misogynist pedophile cult has zero respect for ANYONE else and should be outlawed across the globe.

Beauty is God
I quote a lot from Conference of the Books (The Search for Beauty in Islam) by Khaled Abou El Fadl, and today I explained to someone else who is thinking of converting why I consider this an essential read for anyone coming to Islam (or frankly anyone who is already here as well).
The reason may sound harsh, but it is both honest, and important.
After you convert, or maybe it is already true, you are going to find yourself in a world of very outspoken, bad actors. There are so many bad Islamic actors out there that some days I think they outnumber the good ones. Some of the things I hear loud, outspoken voices say in the 'popular Muslim' streams are absolutely wild, and it is very easy to get caught up in the false religion of 'what is popular amongst man' vs. the true religion of God.
Conference of the Books was integral to helping center me. It helped me overcome a lot of the struggles I had coming to Islam in the first place 15 years ago, and it helped bring me back to Islam when I wandered, more than any other book aside from the Qur'an itself.
At its core, it is literally a book about understanding the search for God is synonymous with the search for beauty (and vice versa), and what is ugly (and you will encounter a lot of ugly, apologies in advance) is not God. And we all need to remember this so much.
It's one of the main books that keeps me grounded in the modern world of Islam, and I hope it can be cherished by others as well.

Every political situation in the Middle East the US gets involved in is not automatically like Iraq.
People saying it's a "lie" that the Iranian government could have nukes are seriously underestimating Khamenei's genocidal regime and slapping every Woman Life Freedom protestor who has continuously warned about the regime's aspirations in the face.
That doesn't mean Trump's actions are all "good" either- bombing nuclear facilities can have deadly consequences for civilians living nearby. It is also concerning that a leader like Trump can decide to go to war without other parts of the government ok-ing it.
But the amount of sanitizing of the Iranian regime- which has murdered, tortured, and raped countless dissidents- is unacceptable.
