The complexity of Naya Rivera’s character, Santana, on Glee actually is not talked about enough.
I genuinely feel so connected to her through our similar queer experiences. Her battle with compulsory heterosexuality that resulted in many hookups with men and even a sort of romance or “situationship” with Puckerman.
Today when there is so much judgement surrounding sexual questioning, when even members of the queer community place harsh expectations on individuals that don’t immediately understand their attraction, it’s important to remember that being queer doesn’t only look one way. Being a lesbian doesn’t always mean being a “gold-star”, it doesn’t mean being masculine, and it doesn’t even mean being unable to recognize attractive men.
Santana didn’t find the men she hooked up with UNattractive, because conventionally they were and it doesn’t make her any less gay to recognize that, she just didn’t understand how that related to herself and her own queer identity at the time. Because of the patriarchal world we all live in, it is sometimes impossible for women to be friends with men, as they will often only be friends with a woman if they find her attractive or believe they can hookup with her. This was difficult for me when exploring my own identity, because I couldn’t differentiate my platonic feelings for men from the romantic feelings I was hearing other women talk about experiencing. And in truth, the two can look extremely similar: wanting to spend more time together, to feel closer to one another, to hangout one on one, or feeling excited when you receive a text from him, even nervous because it’s a new blossoming connection. I find it interesting that when discussing their queer identity women often share the sentiment that they knew they liked women, but had a hard time grappling with the fact that they didn’t like men. As someone who went through, and is still going through, this myself I believe it is as simple as learning the difference between platonic/romantic and how those feelings present themselves for you.
Going through life as a lesbian is definitely an adjustment from the societal norm, but that doesn’t mean it has to be negative. And no one can tell you how it’s supposed to look, because we each experience attraction and life through different lenses.
