something that's really interesting about this is that in chess top women are often considered more aggressive players than men. of course that's all gendered nonsense, but they keep perpetuating the stereotypes. but in chess too much aggression is often considered a bad thing. so where in f1 lack of aggression is the excuse people are giving for why there aren't women at the highest level, in chess it's often too much aggression. but these two completely opposite arguments have the same root: the idea that women are inferior to men. and these misogynistic ideas are the true reason why there have only been 5 women driving in f1, and why there are only 42 female grandmasters in the entire world (as opposed to over 2000 male grandmasters). misogyny has driven women away from these sports, and the less women that participate, the less chance of women getting to the highest level.

not to mention that the systems have been actively discouraging women from participating. maria teresa de filippis, the first woman to ever drive in f1, was barred from entering the 1958 french grand prix by the race director, who told her "the only helmet a woman should wear is one at the hairdresser's." world chess champion bobby fischer was known for being incredibly misogynistic. the chess world and the motorsports world are rife with people who think that women are simply inferior to men, no matter the situation. this sort of thing drives young women away. and the ones that survive? their accomplishments always get diminished. abbi pulling wins a race in british f4? she's 'so much older' and 'it's a shitty series anyway'. hou yifan becomes the youngest world chess champion ever at the age of 16? it's a women's league, so it 'doesn't count'.

nothing women do will ever be good enough for misogynists.

between the media referring to george as ‘georgina’, horner saying he’s hysterical, max calling him a princess repeatedly, and people on george’s tag saying he’s acting like a hormonal woman, I think it’s time for us to have a conversation about people in this sport associating george with feminine traits in a way to portray him as bad, emotional and irrational when the real irrational behavior is coming from the driver whose aggressiveness and brashness is always praised

I challenged my mother (long time trekkie and chess champion) to a game of chess since our set was out.

This bitch was so cocky the entire game and basically explaining how to play to me, so when I just started not really caring and doing whatever she was like 'oh I'll have you beat soon'

I proceeded to throw her off her game with some random ass combo and beat her.

She looked up and said "you Kirked me" and then we talked about the Kobayashi Maru and Corbomite Maneuver til eventually we starting arguing over TOS vs AOS vs SNW

My dad called us nerds and I responded "no I'm not I'm leaving to read my star trek fanfiction" and my mom said "well fine, since I'm such a nerd I'm taking the remote and watching Dune"

All this to say, I love my mom and suck it dad (he's a big nerd too tho and i love him dearly)
