The Death Maze (With The Puzzles And Autistic People)
Given the remote location Tango had set up a base for this operation, no one really expected visitors. Especially not during the day; not that it would be much different than at night, but there was just something disarming about eating lunch with the dungeon master and the guy who refused to leave the dungeon; literally refused- Etho had started buying groceries. Tango didn’t buy the right bread apparently, and yes, it was a big deal, Etho couldn’t make his sandwich if he didn’t have the right bread, Tango, and if you won’t do it right I’ll do it myself!
Jimmy didn’t have much skin in the game. He was just happy to get a free lunch out of the deal, really. It was a good sandwich.
But again, visitors were a surprise. Honestly, Tango hadn’t even caused enough of a ruckus for police to show up yet; Jimmy was pretty sure he hadn’t even gotten on the news. If Jimmy thought too much about that he might start spiraling about the miserable state of the world, however, someone had to get the door; Tango looked busy with something on his phone, and Etho didn’t look like he was moving any time soon.
The entrance to the dungeon castle was a grand, sprawling thing, the door just as imposing, but opening the whole gate was quite the hassle, so Jimmy stuck with the smaller cutout instead, which the three of them used for casual comings and goings. Still heavy, but far more manageable.
Now, Jimmy didn’t have any sort of expectation here; the doorbell ringing hadn’t been insistent or aggressive or anything, but he wasn’t expecting just.. a guy. Just standing there. Quite a normal looking guy too, hardly remarkable at all in a world of superheroes at least. Was he human? He looked human. What was a human doing here of all places? Did he think this was some kind of tourist attraction? How did he even find this place?
“Hello,” the man said, cordial, almost professional; he had this cold neutrality to him that felt akin to an inspector of sorts, and just by looking at the outside of the building, the stranger could tell Decked Out was not up to code. The quiet confidence alone made Jimmy quite nervous, though the stranger took his time speaking as he observed the intricate decoration, only serving to worsen Jimmy’s anxiety. “Is this where I can find the maze? The death maze, the one with the puzzles and autistic people.
“Uh,” Jimmy felt his mouth drop open, entirely unsure how to respond. Was this guy some kind of superhero? He didn’t look like a superhero. Jimmy wasn’t sure he’d ever seen someone who looked so normal- goodness, surely he didn’t want to run the game! Jimmy wasn’t sure if Tango could handle another Etho. Not to mention, this guy didn’t look to be the athletic sort.. if he was a civilian, he’d probably get hurt. Not that either of those things ever stopped Etho. “Yes, but-“
“Oh, great,” the stranger ducked through the door, Jimmy startling as he invited himself inside, “I’ve decided I need some new friends, and this seemed like a golden opportunity. Not that I’m used to going out of my way, but I’ve come to realize I can’t just stagnate forever. It’s time to take some initiative, or something. I dunno. I like puzzles.” He stopped, taking a moment before clearing his throat, “You know HotGuy, right? Do me a huge favor and don’t tell him I was here.”
“You.. know HotGuy.”
“I know him.” The man started walking, and Jimmy was helpless to do anything except follow.
“He told you about Decked Out?”
“Told me all about it. Didn’t know the name though, just about the whole fiasco..” he trailed off with a vague gesture, “Seems like they didn’t play the game right, but it sounded interesting.”
“And he doesn’t want you here?”
“I mean, I imagine he wouldn’t.”
“How did you find us then?”
“Oh, I just asked for the address. Said I was curious, you know, since I thought more people would have heard of it by now. It’s pretty out of the way, but I took a few days off work.”
“And-“ Jimmy couldn’t help his own stunted speech, more and more baffled by the minute, “He didn’t-? What? Who are you?”
“Oh, I’m Cub. Sorry. Should have said so,” Cub continued on with the confidence of someone who’d been here a thousand times, walking entirely in the wrong direction, though that didn’t seem to bother him one bit. His eyes were on the ceilings and the walls, curious.
“No- I mean, a superhero. Are you working with heroes?”
“Technically, yes, if retail is what you mean. But I’m not on the streets, no, that’s not my jam. You’re Jimmy, right? The avian. There’s a blaze born here too, right? He’s called Tango? HotGuy told me he was unpleasant and a little pathetic, but I think HotGuy and a friend fall under the same description, so I thought this might work out.
“You mean Tango? Wait a minute-“ Jimmy hopped forward with a couple awkward flaps of his wings to block Cub’s path, though his expression didn’t change, considering Jimmy evenly, “If you’re just a civilian, you shouldn’t be here. Seriously, you could really get hurt. Tango isn’t the pinnacle of morality or anything, so you’ll probably get thrown in Decked Out if he finds you here.”
“Oh! I would like to do that. Where can I find Tango?”
“Jimmy?” Tango’s call lit the hall, confusion clear as it bounced off the walls, “Is everything alright? Who was it? Anyone seeking revenge? Where’d you go?” Jimmy didn’t get to speak before Tango’s round eyes turned their way, hair and arms sparking in his surprise. “Who’s this?”
“Uh-“
Cub turned before Jimmy could come up with an excuse, the first sign of excitement showing on his face as he spoke, “You must be Tango. I’m Cub, great to meet you. I’d like to try your maze? Is it open?”
“Decked Out? You want to play?” Tango lit up, figuratively and literally, “Jimmy, who is this guy?”
“Not a superhero, Tango-“
“I was referred by a friend,” Cub slipped the words behind Jimmy’s, happily walking toward Tango.
“You were not referred! Tango, HotGuy is going to come looking for this guy, you don’t want that, do you?”
Tango blanched before his face flushed, head and arms sparking to life wilder than they had before. “HotGuy!? No! Get this guy out of here!”
Cub shot Jimmy a withering glare, but any hint of concern melted away when he closed his eyes, turning back to Tango with a practiced neutrality, “HotGuy does what I tell him. I’m not missing, and he’s not looking for me. You have nothing to worry about.”
Tango stomped his foot, flame flying from the soles, “He broke my game!”
Cub shrugged, “I’m only human. Couldn’t break anything if I tried. I just want to play. Get to know the people here, that’s all.”
“Are you a cop?”
That shut him up, the silence deep and incriminating.
Finally, Cub huffed, “No. Fine. Whatever.” He stopped in his tracks, swiveling back toward the exit, and just- just- leaving? He genuinely looked kind of upset, though Jimmy was too baffled by the sudden exit to say much else.
Jimmy.. didn’t get the sense he was a cop, even despite the odd retreat; too weird in the wrong ways, too blunt. HotGuy never liked law enforcement either; whenever he and Jimmy sat down to chat, the topic came up at least once, always to complain about incompetence or corruption or otherwise (not that the superhero business was any better, but Jimmy wasn’t about to say that to HotGuy’s face). It’d feel like an odd turnaround. Tango was similarly confused, but not nearly as bothered, only shrugging once the stranger disappeared through the front door.
“Take care of that, will you?”
Jimmy blinked, turning, “What? Take care of what?”
“Make sure he’s gone,” Tango said, the look on his face pleading, counteracting the facade of authority he attempted to push into his tone.
Jimmy scoffed, waving him off with a smile, “I don’t think that’s in my job description.”
“Please? Please?” Tango stood on his tiptoes, and while Jimmy knew the fire off Tango’s arms wouldn’t hurt him, he still flinched away on instinct, masking the gesture with a scoff. Somehow, this only made Tango more desperate. “We’re friends, aren’t we? You’ll make the bad cop go away, won’t you?”
“I don’t think he’s a cop. If he’s a friend of HotGuy, he’s probably just a bit off his rocker.”
Tango snorted, “Aren’t you a friend of HotGuy? You told me you had lunch plans on Sunday!”
“Yeah, I guess so. And I get kidnapped for a living, so while I’m flattered, your opinion of me might be a bit warped. What, do you also think Etho is normal?”
Tango’s flames burst upward for a moment, flecks of fire spiraling off in small wisps, “Etho’s a total freak, not like you. Have you heard him talk about sandwiches? Normal people don’t have that many opinions about sandwiches. You’re great, and my friend, so you’re gonna tell that stranger to get off my lawn for me, yeah? Yeah? Please?”
“Fine.” Jimmy made a scene of his distaste with a loud sigh, but he didn’t really mind all that much, only pushing back for the sake of it. He wasn’t a connoisseur of confrontation or anything, but Cub had left in a huff, so Jimmy really didn’t expect him to be sticking around.
This turned out to be an incorrect assumption.
Jimmy approached the unfamiliar car outside cautiously, though it wasn’t running, Jimmy only able to see the top of Cub’s head as he was hunched over in the driver’s seat. He wasn’t entirely sure what to do or say; he tried to wave and get the stranger’s attention from afar, but Cub’s forehead was firmly plastered to the steering wheel, eyebrows furrowed and miserable looking. Jimmy wondered if he should leave? He didn’t really want to be here, friend of Tango’s or not; technically they weren’t even friends, Jimmy was just here out of contractual obligation. Still, Jimmy liked to keep a good relationship with his clients. Villains were the volatile sort, he knew that well. Doing a little favor like this wasn’t too much trouble, and Tango seemed like the kind of guy that would remember it.
Jimmy took a deep breath, but didn’t quite have the nerve to speak, so he approached the car instead, gently knocking on the window.
Cub startled, the car horn honking as he hit his head before jumping up. The surprise didn’t last long though, his frown returning deeper than before. He stared at Jimmy for a long time, eyes shrewd behind his glasses, then abruptly, let his head hit the steering wheel again, uncaring. Well. Guess Jimmy was going to have to be the one to talk first. Not that Cub rolled the window down. He knocked again for good measure, but Cub made no move to acknowledge him.
“Uh, sir, this is private property? You can’t be here. Please leave,” Jimmy tried to raise some authority into his tone, though this was a talent both he and Tango lacked. Cub was unfazed.
The stranger grunted, though the sound was muffled through the window, “What are you going to do? Call the cops? Throw me in your maze?” Jimmy hesitated for far too long and Cub huffed, not moving. Well this wouldn’t do. Surely this guy wasn’t just going to sit here forever, but still, Jimmy didn’t exactly want to go back inside while he was still around.
“Listen, I’m sorry this didn’t go your way today, but you really shouldn’t be here. I don’t know what you heard about Decked Out, but beyond the safety issue, I don’t think you have the right idea about the game. There’s no puzzles, not really, and honestly it’s not about being a maze, either. I’m sure HotGuy only got that impression because it was his first time down there, half of which he spent getting dragged around upside down by ravagers. There’s strategy, sure, but again, ravagers. You’re just a human, right? You could get really hurt. I’ve been hurt.”
“Doesn’t matter,” Cub mumbled, the words so obscured that Jimmy barely heard them, “This was really dumb. This was really stupid, coming here, I don’t even know what I thought I.. I don’t know. My head got the better of me. I’ll leave, I’ll go soon, I just need a minute to stew.”
Jimmy pursed his lips.
“Oh. Okay. Thanks, then.” Jimmy cursed inwardly for sounding so stupid, then frowned, biting his lip. This was taken care of. He should just go, watch from the doorstep, and make sure Cub left like he said he would. Jimmy sure would like to walk away, but his damn bleeding heart was keeping him rooted on the concrete, making note of how sad and defeated the poor man in the car looked, and before he could stop himself, he was already speaking, “I understand. Take all the time you need, but if you want to talk.. I mean, I’m not on the clock or anything. Why’d you trek all the way out here?”
…
Grian’s head snapped up when he heard the front door click unlocked, not that he was waiting for anyone or anything, but he certainly hadn’t been wearing headphones since Cub texted that he was on his way home. Which. Probably not necessary, given it had been six hours since then, but hey.
“I’m home,” Cub announced himself, and Grian heard the keys of the car he’d rented for his ‘getaway’ click into the keybowl by the front door. Grian nearly fell out of bed as he made for the common area, but forced a deep breath before exiting his room. Calm. Collected. Normal. All of that went out the window when Grian opened his door and spotted the bright pink cast across Cub’s left arm.
“Cub? What happened? You’re hurt, why didn’t you call me? Were you in the hospital? You didn’t say anything! Is it broken? You didn’t call me-“
“Hush,” Cub waved him off, though the effect was lost a little with the stiffness of his cast, “I had a great getaway, thank you for asking.”
“You broke your arm!”
“Of my own volition.”
“What-“ Grian sputtered, “What does that mean!?” For the first time, Grian’s eyes were drawn elsewhere besides just the cast. Cub’s chin, which looked bruised, the way he was favoring one leg when he usually shifted his weight idly; it wasn’t odd for Cub to wear baggy clothes either, but Grian was starting to feel like the decision for today was deliberate.
“It’s a secret,” Cub said the words so simply, so casually that Grian almost missed them. Cub looked more than content to leave it at that, walking with some urgency toward his room, and he was definitely limping-
“Cub!” Grian reached to grab his arm, block his way, anything, but Cub was stubbornly determined to push by.
“I made some new friends,” he said, and if that was meant to be an explanation, it was terrifying. But he sounded happy, didn’t he? Maybe Grian hesitated then, and Cub took full advantage, stepping quickly by and slipping into his room, the door shutting and clicking locked behind him. Grian squawked, having half a mind to pummel the door with his fists and demand and explanation, but.. Well. When Cub wanted to hide something, he didn’t give easily. Half the time, he didn’t give at all.
Grian stomped his foot, if for no other reason than the energy needed somewhere to go. Cub could be so infuriating sometimes. Grian should have known something was off when Cub announced an impromptu solo vacation! Cub never wanted to go anywhere!
Grian was so telling Scar on him..

Last Christmas
A/N: Written for Vee's Holly Jolly Challenge. (@sstan-hoe).
Warnings: Attempts at coercion.
Prompts: Nick Fowler - the song Last Christmas. The lyrics included will be written in bold purple font.
Summary: You should've known better. Of course he's still in love with her.
“What the hell is this,” Nick forcefully places the paperwork on your desk.
You look it over quickly and respond, “it’s my request for a transfer.”
“But why,” he seethes. His jaw is tight and his body is tense. He clearly feels betrayed but that just makes your own hurt feel more justified.
“Nick,” you sigh, “you really don’t remember what happened at the Christmas party last week?”
Nick crossed his arms, “I remember you and me doing a lot of kissing in my office. Would’ve taken you home if you didn’t run out on me. I thought we were solid. We’ve only been dating a couple weeks, but we’ve been friends for a lot longer.”
“You really don’t remember,” you shake your head as you fight the urge to cry. “When we were in your office, you called me by her name.” Nick freezes at that and you continue, “I also thought we were solid. Enough so that I gave you my heart. But when you can’t let go of her, I guess I was a shoulder to cry on and nothing more. Even if you don’t want it, I need this transfer for me. To save me from tears if nothing else.”
Nick grabs the paperwork and promises to get your transfer approved as he walks out, leaving your office colder than it was before.
It’s been a few months and you’ve really settled into your work. You can definitely understand why the role of manager for the Research and Development Department has such a high turnover rate. Everyone working here requires a different management style, a different level of understanding and guidance. Most managers stick to one style for everyone, but that’s clearly not what’s needed here and you’ve really gotten the hang of what your researchers need from you.
One thing that everyone could agree on was that they needed more space so you were able to work out a construction contract. The first day you met the foreman, Hal Carter, you were taken aback. You’d bought into the stereotypes of construction guys being on the sexist side (catcalling and whatnot) but he was polite, never talked down to you and always took your concerns seriously. He was quite the flirt, though. Pretty much every woman at the office had been winked at and complemented to no end. But no HR complaints came from it so at your weekly updates you just asked him to be careful with your employees and left it there.
You were doing really well in your job, your new life, when the surprise inspection came. Led by Nick. One look and you knew you weren’t over him but you would keep your distance. Once bitten and twice shy you’d make sure to keep professional. Taking Nick and his team on the rounds, you were grateful for your employees helping you out. A crowded room, friends with tired eyes but they did their best to make sure you (and their funding) would continue.
After the inspection you practically ran to your office to catch your breath. You didn’t notice Nick following you.
“Are you hiding from me,” he asks quietly. His wintry-blue eyes boring into your soul.
“I’m hiding from you and your soul of ice,” you confess. “I ask you to give me distance, to get my heart right again, and then you just waltz right in without warning. I thought you were someone to rely on.”
“During the rounds, I kept my distance, but you still catch my eye.”
“I know what a fool I’ve been, but if you kissed me now, I know you’d fool me again.”
Nick walked towards you, moving in for the kiss that you weren’t sure you really wanted, but he was interrupted by Hal coming into the office with donuts and coffee.
“Oh, sorry,” Hal faltered. He looked at you, “I’d heard you had an inspection of some kind, figured you could use a pick-me-up. Goodness knows your cookies help me and the crew when the building inspectors come around.”
You smile warmly at him, grateful that he broke Nick’s spell over you. “Thank you, Hal! It’s just what I needed. Care to join me? Nick was just on his way out.”
Nick gave you an icy glare before walking out. As soon as you saw him walk out of the building, you allowed yourself to collapse into your office chair. Hal set down the food on your desk and admitted he had been listening to your conversation.
“I was going to wait until you were done with whatever meeting you were in, but I heard a few things that made me worry about you. Given your reaction, I’m guessing I was right about you needing some help?”
You nod appreciatively, sipping at the coffee. “Thank you, Hal. I almost made a serious mistake. Again.”
“I’m happy to help,” he assures. “You’re a good person and I like helping out good people.”
You snort, “given what I’ve seen and heard you just like helping out women.”
He gives you a shy half-smile, “that’s partially true. I like helping people smile, brightening their day. You never know when someone just needs a compliment to help them keep going. Yeah, I’m a huge flirt. Yeah, it’s nice for my own ego. But, for me, it’s just a way of being nice. Oh, and don’t worry about my ego getting too big. My crew helps me with that.” That last note makes you chuckle and you’re genuinely feeling more relaxed than you thought you would.
“Well,” you grinned, “you definitely helped me smile today. Thank you for that.”
Around August the construction project was finally wrapping up. You knew several people who were going to miss Hal and his crew. Especially when they went shirtless for a minute or two in the summer heat. Even you would occasionally indulge, smiling shyly the times Hal caught you looking. Your face would heat up in embarrassment but he never judged you or made fun of you for it. You were really going to miss him and your weekly meetings.
It was at your last meeting with him when you noticed Hal acting fidgety, almost nervous. You ask him if he’s okay and gives you a shy smile you’ve never seen before.
“Um,” he starts, “I…well, with the construction done…I was, um, would…wouldyougooutwithme?”
You blink a few times, not fully sure of what’s going on. “Hal,” you hesitated, “are you asking me out on a date?”
Hal nods, “I didn’t wanna ask while we were kinda working together. You said you’d never date a coworker again and I didn’t want to risk being that. But getting to know you, I…I’d really like to take you out some time.” He still wasn’t able to meet your eyes.
“Why are you acting so shy?”
“Because flirting is one thing. Asking out someone that I genuinely want to be with? That’s…that’s scary stuff.” He looks into your eyes and you’re taken aback. You see the face of a lover with a fire in his heart. You see someone special.
“I’d love to go out with you.”
It’s the company Christmas party and, despite the crowd, Nick has never felt more alone. He knows you’re going to be here and he keeps watching for you. You’re not hiding from him, but he doesn’t seem to see you. You’ve been doing well and coming into your own. You’ve received nothing but love and support from Hal. You’re finally getting the warmth and care you’ve needed and growing.
Nick seems to give up and walks to his office. You follow quietly. As the door clicks shut, his eyes shoot up and you give him a gentle smile.
“Do you recognize me? Well, it’s been a year, it doesn’t surprise me.”
“You look so beautiful,” he whispers. “More beautiful than I ever gave you credit for. Now I know what a fool I’ve been. I got you something. I wrapped it up and sent it with a note saying, “I love you”. Did you receive it?”
“Yes, Nick,” you smile sadly. “I got the necklace.”
“I want you to know, I meant it, when I wrote that.” His frosty blue eyes scan you, looking for the necklace, unsure of why you don’t look happy about the gift.
“You never actually listened to me,” you shake your head. “If you did, you’d know I never liked gold and diamonds. That was her.” You place the gift box on his desk and stand firm, “I need you to stop sending me gifts and notes like this. Now I’ve found a real love, you’ll never fool me again.”
“But-” Nick tries to respond, you see genuine sadness and loneliness but you stop him before he can try to get you to cave.
“Last Christmas I gave you my heart,” you shake your head, putting a hand between the two of you so he can’t get closer. “You tore me apart. But I’ve healed and grown past. Maybe you should try that as well.”
With that, you turned around and left his office. A year ago you fled the room in tears. Now you’re walking out with your head held high. Last year you were left cold and shaken. Now you’re surrounded by warmth and comfort.

Hi your Lockwood fics are amazing honestly- could you do a Lockwood x reader where she’s the older sister of Kipps? The rest is up to you though thanks :) ❤️
Now that I’m grown (I’m scared of ghosts)
AN: Lockwood is aged up in this so there wasn't a 5+ age gap haha! I also don't explicitly say how old any of the characters are since I wasn't sure on the age gap between Lockwood and Kipps anyways, but they're all around early 20s.
This is quite a hefty one, I had the idea to make the reader a DEPRAC officer to fit with being an older sister of Kipps, so I hope you like it!
Warnings: Reader is slightly older than Lockwood, disappointed Barnes, flirty Lockwood, mild hurt/comfort, fluff, aged up Lockwood and Co
Word count: 2k
Pairing: Anthony Lockwood x fem!Reader
You and Anthony Lockwood had a tendency of bumping into each other on cases, or should you say that you had a habit of finding him at the crack of dawn after destroying a house or causing some sort of disturbance. You used to be one of the more 'senior' members of Fittes' agency and one of top supervisors the country had - well, before your (slightly younger) brother Quill took over. You ultimately decided to move on and work for DEPRAC since your Talent began to fade, which helped you to begin to get to grips with adulthood. You'd began to like it at DEPRAC, already at the position of Sergeant after a couple of years, but that also meant that you had to be ready whenever Inspector Barnes needed you.
Where were you? Ah yes, Anthony Lockwood. You swore that guy had a death wish as he loved blowing things up and getting into trouble, you'd think he was some new hotshot agent if you hadn't known him for such a long time and he wasn't basically an adult himself. Regardless of his quarrels with your brother, he always seemed to love to charm you in those early hours of the mornings, somehow always covered in either soot or silver, or both. You had to stay professional of course, you were working and Quill would kill you if he saw you "fraternising with the enemy" as he would always say, but you would always notice little things about Lockwood - like how he tousled his hair when he walked over to you or how he'd grown into his stupid coat.
One morning - supposedly your day off, you were woken by the loud ringing of the telephone by your bed, you let out a knowing sigh as it could only be one person at this time of day. "Barnes, what pleasure do I owe you on this fine morning?" you ask him as you look to your window to see a darkness, then to your bedside clock showing 4:30am. It wasn't even sunrise yet. "Sorry, I know it's your day off. We're to head to an old country house in Greenwich. I believe Lockwood and Co are already there, reaping havoc as per usual" "Oh fantastic, he's gonna love seeing us just drop by for a helping hand. I'll call Quill and tell him to get ready incase we need backup." "Perfect, I'll pick you up in 15." You hung up and let out a soft chuckle, already imagining Lockwood's disgruntled expression as he sees Barnes arrive with both his most and least favourite Kipps sibling and a team of agents.
You and Barnes arrived at the country house just as Lockwood and his fellow agents emerged from the building, the windows leaking with smoke and the agents covered in soot. "Anthony Lockwood, do I need to start detaining you every time you set fire to a house?" Barnes growled out, though it did make you chuckle. "What can I say Inspector? Wouldn't you prefer to see a bunch of agents still alive over another building riddled with Visitors?" Lockwood held up his hands in defence before flashing you one of his cocky, devilish smiles "Morning Kipps, looking as radiant as ever. That green turtleneck really brings out your eyes." "Feeling like I just crawled out of a grave, but thanks Tony" It wasn't your voice that replied, but that of your brother Quill's who had suddenly appeared next to you.
Lockwood's face, oh what a picture that was, he looked like he had just eaten a lemon when Quill had appeared. Although he never said it to you personally, you were almost positive that Quill had said something to Lockwood about flirting with you, although that never stopped him. If you knew Anthony Lockwood at all from the five plus years while you'd been an agent, it's that he would do almost anything to piss off your brother. It made you laugh really, saying as you were older than both of them by at least a year or so.
You pulled Lockwood aside to a secluded spot for questioning as a mix of DEPRAC and Fittes agents swarmed the building as they made it safe and put out any fires. "We really must stop meeting like this y/n" Lockwood said to you as you finished questioning him on the case "Hmm, it's funny that isn't it, since our jobs correlate with each other." You say to him as you give him a slight smirk and put away your notepad. "Alright, you got me. I'm simply suggesting that we should... maybe see each other outside of work" Anthony's eyes sparkled amongst the soot that covered his face and he held out his hands as if in question. You crossed your arms and met his eyes "As if Quill would let you even attempt at the idea-" "When has Quill Kipps ever been the boss of you? A young lady like yourself doesn't need his approval, and regardless, here I am 'attempting'" his wide toothy grin spread across his face as he saw your cheeks flush a little pink and a smile tug at your lips "I'm going to take that as a yes, I await your call Sergeant!" Before you knew it, he was strolling his away back to George and Lucy who were waiting for him, and the group of them exited the scene.
Although you had thought about calling Lockwood, you had his number from the DEPRAC database, you got so caught up in all your current case work that it wasn't your biggest priority. You almost called him once after work and realised it was a ridiculous time of day and thought he'd either be sleeping or on a case himself. That didn't stop him from eventually getting back in your line of sight though.
A few weeks later when you arrived at work one early morning, Barnes called you to let you know that there was another disturbance overnight and it needed a look over. You sighed - were you disappointed or happy it was Lockwood? You weren't sure, but you knew you were gonna kick his ass when you saw him. Once you arrived at the house everything seemed normal, no officers or agents were outside, the building seemed quiet, it was very strange. You slowly opened the door and stepped inside, it was freezing and you could see the clouds of your breath in front of you. Suddenly there was a loud crash and crackling of salt bombs up ahead of you in another room "Lockwood? Are you in here?" you called out into the dark hall, your hands burying into your pockets - one grasping onto a salt bombs you kept incase of need and the other fiddling with a compact silver net. You never used to be scared of ghosts, but now you were older and couldn't see them as well, it was hard to keep your heart from racing.
You headed towards the room where the noise originated from and called out again "Lockwood? Carlyle? It's Sergeant Kipps." You opened the door, noticing the handle was icy to the touch, and crept inside. "Kipps!? Move out the way!" George almost shouted as he saw you, iron chain in his hand and stood next to Lucy with her rapier raised. But you couldn't move and you couldn't see the Visitor either, but you could feel it as it buried its eyes into you - you were Ghost Locked. You looked around the room in search for Lockwood, your body frozen on the spot, before seeing him in the corner of the room clutching his side as he looked for the Source. You willed everything in your body to feel something again, to unclasp yourself from the control the apparition had on you. You slowly began to move your hand out of your pocket, salt bomb in your grasp "Is it directly in front of me?" you asked "Yep. So close you cannot miss it" Lucy replied, slowly moving George out of your line of fire. You finally mustered the willpower and threw the salt bomb, knowing it had collided with the Visitor when it snapped and banged and you finally felt like you could breathe again.
"I've got the Source! Someone throw me a Seal" Lockwood called out. George tossed you a large silver net as you made your way over to where Lockwood was and handed it to him. He covered the Source and you could hear everyone in the room collectively let out a breath. Slowly you helped Lockwood out of the building while the others cleared the house, setting him down on the front steps of the house as he clutched his side. "Do you mind if I take a look at that?" he heaved out of chuckle and grinned at you "You'll only call DEPRAC to deal with it-" "I'll only call them if I deem it necessary. If I think you're gonna die on me, you bet your ass I'm going to call them." You let out a reassuring smile and he agreed to your help - it only appeared to be some heavy bruising so you were relieved. "You know, I think you're right. We really should stop meeting like this" you say to him, the both of you chuckling to each other as your foreheads rested gently together, fingers interwoven.
The tender moment between you and Lockwood was suddenly broken when you heard the crunch of footsteps on the gravel driveway up ahead, and of course it was Barnes and your brother Quill. The both of you hurriedly rose to your feet, patting down the dust off your coat as the officer and agent both gave you stern looks "You know Sergeant, when I send you out to check on a disturbance, I expect to be updated on the scene so I don't have to call out agents to save your ass." "Sorry sir, the scene was awfully quiet and I was concerned for the safety of-" your chest was tight as you felt eyes from both the Inspector and your brother bore into your skull, but Barnes cut you off before you could continue. "I do not care about the safety of your boyfriend, you do not have Talent anymore and you put yourself in serious danger." His voice was harsh but steady, Lockwood slowly making his way to your side as he finished talking "Inspector, Kipps, if I may add, if it wasn't for the Sergeant here we would've been in serious trouble. She ensured the safety of my entire team and helped keep the Visitor at bay even without seeing it."
Quill's face was so stern and tense that you pulled him aside once Barnes finished with his disapproving warnings, leaving him with Lockwood. "You shouldn't have gone in there y/n, you should've called for backup." "Hey, Quill, look at me. I'm totally fine, nothing happened." you held your brothers hands in your own, rubbing your thumbs in a soothing pattern "If I hadn't gone in there, Anthony and his team could've been seriously injured or worse, you know I couldn't just ignore that." He let out a long sigh and met your eyes "You really like him, don't you?" "I hate to disappoint brother, but it was kind of inevitable" Quill chuckled and nodded to you, and you returned a smile to him.
Your brother finally let you go over to Lockwood, both your eyes meeting when you arrived by his side. "Finally convinced the spoilsport to let me take you out?" he joked and you couldn't help but smile. “Stop burning houses down Anthony, and I’ll think about it".

I know yall probably know about poverty and generational poverty and what not but I just want to vent….
Because like… the things people don’t like know about generational poverty unless they’re experiencing it is just how… trapped you feel weighed down by absolutely everything.
See I honestly think something may be up with our gas line
Which is a terrifying thought.
Now, idk if it’s a leak per se (though we’ve got the windows cracked just in case) but if we turn on our stove the gas smell is really strong, the flame flairs out of the sides of the stove, etc.
Shit that shouldn’t be happening.
Shit that is really fucking dangerous.
We know this is dangerous, we’re not stupid.
We know we should get it fixed.
But here’s the thing, okay?
The floors are just base boards, they’re falling in and there’s holes everywhere.
There’s rats that we’ve tried every trick in the book to get rid of, short of hiring an exterminator. We’ve borrowed traps, had traps “gifted” to us, tried poisons that friends and family have bought for us, etc. It cuts them down but they come back.
All of our food is in thick sealed plastic containers and yet they’ve eaten some of the containers open. They even ate our soap and makeup and cleaning supplies and that didn’t seem to stop them. (Our soap and cleaning supplies are now in plastic containers too but idk how long it will deter them, and the makeup is thrown away)
We have shoddy wiring in the house, done by my own grandpa back in the 70’s when they first bought this place.
Our roof has cracks in it that have failing patches, done by a family friend.
Our AC doesn’t exactly work very well and it’s been reaching 100°F weather (with 70% humidity no less) and to fix it we’d need $10k at least, but we’d also need new flooring, so it would likely be more than that…
Etc.
And like, it’s not that the house is dirty, but that it’s falling apart.
And here’s the deal… calling someone who knows what’s what about houses to check the stove means calling someone who is going to inspect the whole house, someone who’s going to say:
“hey uh, your gas is messed up and your electricity is messed up and so’s your plumbing… Your floors are bad… we have to condemn this house and if you can’t pay to fix it up then you’re going to lose it.”
And it’s not like we got this house and destroyed it by a lack of maintenance, this house is like, 50+ years old, and has been my home since I was born.
My grandma and I couldn’t take care of everything because my grandpa had Alzheimer’s and he was going downhill and it was me and her caring for him.
My health is really bad and I can’t work a regular day job because of it, but I haven’t been able to hire a lawyer to apply for disability, so we’re living off one income and whatever side gigs I can do from time to time.
We don’t have the money to pay the mortgage, buy groceries, pay the home insurance, the gas bill, pay medical bills, buy pet food, etc and also then pay for our house to be inspected and potentially condemned for things I didn’t even do in the first place, things that came before I inherited this house…
My whole family has been poor my whole life, from my great great grandparents to my parents, etc.
It was always “you don’t pay for a professional to fix it, you either fix it yourself or get a family member or a friend of a friend to fix it”
Which means that if we ask a building inspector to tell us what’s wrong with the house… well… it’s going to probably be everything. Because this house has never been “professionally” fixed, it’s only ever had family members and friends of family members slap duct tape over glaring issues and say they’ll only charge you a glass of sweet tea.
Which means it’ll probably cost nearly the entire value of the house to fix tbh.
I just feel like I’m on a ship that’s sinking and way more water is coming in than I could ever manage to get out. I keep trying to patch the leaks but the materials just not available, and besides, if I stop bailing out the water for even a second to go and try and patch the leak, I’ll go fully underwater.
And you know, it’s not fair. It’s not right that it’s like this. This is our home and we love it. This has been my home for years and we love this house, this land, the trees and plants that grow, everything here is loved. It’s cared for. We try to take pride in it.
But you wouldn’t know that because we’re too busy trying to bail out that sinking ship. We’re too busy from constantly working and cleaning and repairing.
It’s not okay that it’s set up that way. We need help, we need community. We should be able to call someone and be like “Hey, we love this house, we’ve never been late on a payment, we’ve worked our butts off to try and keep things going, but we need help. Can you look at everything this house needs to function and be in good condition and help us get those things?”
Like, hell a payment plan option would work, wouldn’t it? Why isn’t that the done thing?
I mean, I know why, the more houses that are taken from the poor means the more real estate that’s available for the rich, they’re already trying to make our whole neighbourhood into some corporate venture instead of a residential area. And besides, if they manage to make us homeless they’d be just as happy throwing us in jail for the “crime” of being homeless and poor and making money off free labour.
Like that’s why it’s normal practice not to help anyone keep their home when they actually have a home. The system is set up for you to fail unless your family is at least moderately wealthy.
It’s just such an unforgiving cycle. And I know I’m beating a dead horse with this vent. I know that like over half of America’s population is likely in the same shitty place we’re in.
It’s just… I’m so tired of being in cycles like these.
I’m too sick to work, too poor to afford to get on disability, and both too poor and too exhausted to go to the doctor to get proper treatment, and it’s just a loop.
I’m too exhausted to fix the house, too busy cleaning the house to rest, too exhausted to make money to have professionals help fix the house, rinse and repeat.
The house breaking down is very likely making me more sick, but I’m too sick to be able to get the house fixed.
My grandparents didn’t have money to fix the house, my parents don’t have money to fix theirs, I don’t have money to fix my house.
Every step forward is like ten steps backwards and I genuinely don’t know what the solution to all of this is.
I feel so fucking trapped. I don’t even have the energy to run a gofundme for myself to try and get the help we need, because it takes so so much to to actually get a gofundme up and off the ground, I have tried before and it’s always been a failure because I just literally never have enough energy for it.
We have so many things we’d love to do. We’d love to make this house into an eco-friendly, sustainable home, with solar panels and a huge garden. We want to make a farm stand with fresh eggs and vegetables and fruit and let it operate on an honour system, so anyone who needs food can take what they need and pay what they can, yes even if it’s $0. I want to crochet hats and mittens and set those out too, for sale or just for those who need them…
We want so badly to take care of our community… but it feels like our community isn’t there to support us, not because people don’t want to support one another but because we’re all trapped or are being prevented from supporting one another.
Because having a farm-stand means you need to buy business licenses… building a sustainable home means you need to buy a building permit.
Every step of the way feels like good intentions are wasted, road-blocked.
I can’t even begin to explain how many jobs I’ve applied to, writing, editing, working as a cook or a waiter, data entry, etc.
In school they told me I’d be able to do anything I wanted to. I was a “gifted” straight A student and as I’m sure many people on this site know, that’s not bragging. It’s the opposite. The school system, the system that is supposed to help me be successful in life, told me I would be, and now I would be lucky to make $7.25/an hour while living in a place where the minimum liveable wage is $35/an hour.
It costs $35 an hour for one person to live moderately comfortably in my town. And this isn’t an arbitrary number, it’s literally on our county’s government ran poverty assessment website.
And that’s not a thriving wage it’s a surviving wage. It’s Home, Food, Utilities, Transportation & Clothes.
It leaves no room for medical care, comfort, entertainment, etc.
So what the hell are those of us who are working for anything less than that, or those of us unable to work, supposed to do?!
And like I said, I know I’m preaching to a choir rn, I know everyone is experiencing some version of this. I just… I need to be able to express it from time to time. To talk about how unfair and ridiculous and needlessly cruel this is.
It’s so deeply flawed and evil that we’re unable to have legitimate health concerns inspected because we’re worried about the house being taken away from us.
It’s trash. It’s inhumane.
And if anyone has any like… suggestions or advice that would be great… I’m considering just having our gas service canceled by our gas company and buying a small electric grill instead… but our gas also powers our hot water heater so…
:/

Stories We’ve Read & Enjoyed in the Past Three Years (2020 - 2023)
We had a recent request for stories that were not dark, and no character death. They wanted stories that would make for fun conversations - we’re not quite sure what that means exactly, since any story can spark a fun convo so we hope you all find something enjoyable to read. We’ve included 30 various stories - if you enjoy an author’s writing, definitely check out their other works! And it goes without saying, please leave kudos or a sweet comment.
Thank you and happy reading!

~~~~
Everybody’s naked and there’s a country to run by @coffeegleek
A take on the "prince/king!Blaine and prince/king!Kurt are getting married and have to do it while naked in front of their loyal subjects" trope. It’s pure crack taken seriously. I’m blaming the heat. The fic started as this wisp of an idea and a single funny Kurt line. It was supposed to all be fast paced and instead sometimes dissolves into a bit of world building, exposition, and Kurt feelings. I do try my best and hope that at least some of the jokes and humor land. It also developed a full blown plot that has a beginning and an end.
Stitches of the Mind: Professional Synopsis
A while back (like nearly two years now, Jesus!) I got a professional edit of Stitches of the Mind done. It cost me more than a grand, and I've had to edit it myself since, but they also threw in a professional synopsis for a nominal fee.
I thought it might be fun for me to post that here. So, here is what a professional editor wrote as the synopsis for Stitches of the Mind.
Set in small-town England, Stitches of the Mind is a novel that will keep readers on the edge of their seat, dropped into a cauldron of tension. Meadowhurst is like many small English towns, where everybody knows everybody and nothing stays secret for long. Detective Dennis Calson, having just moved from the big city, is just settling in to his new job when his Inspector puts him in charge of the Penny Willows Murders, a series of unsolved killings presently terrorizing Meadowhurst. Tammy, Rhianne, Jacqueline, and Rebecca formed four-fifths of a friend group. They would get together, go to bars, clubs, or cafes, and just generally were involved in each others’ lives. They became close with other family members, like the teenage sisters of Rhianne and Jacqueline, who were themselves friends. The lives of these women were turned upside down with the disappearance and subsequent murderous reign of the fifth member of their cohort: Penny Willows. Dennis begins his investigation, interviewing the women in turn. We discover that they have all, to various degrees, withdrawn from life in the town. The subsequent murder of Rebecca forces them even further within themselves. The women all react differently. Jaqueline throws herself into work on her family farm while Tammy tries to help as much as she can with the investigation. For Rhianne, on the other hand, the events create an entirely different outcome. At first as a coping mechanism, Rhianne creates a life-size mannequin decorated to look like Penny, for whom she has been harbouring latent romantic feelings. As time progresses, the doll begins to take on a life of its own, which leads the women to question whether what they see happening is actually real. Building to a furious climax, Stitches of the Mind will unsettle, wrong-foot, and ultimately satisfy readers, while still leaving them wanting to know more about how life in this seemingly idyllic went so, so wrong.
I still wonder if I got a bit ripped off by the editors, but the feedback I was given was pretty useful. I've also since had to write my own synopsis for a writing competition, so I might post that too at some point.
When I post about keeping men out of women’s prisons I also mean no male staff.
A former correctional officer at California’s largest women’s prison has been arrested on suspicion of sexually assaulting at least 13 incarcerated people over nearly a decade, prosecutors said on Wednesday.
Gregory Rodriguez, who worked at the Central California Women’s Facility before he retired last year while under investigation, has been charged with 95 counts of sexual abuse, including rape, sodomy, sexual battery and rape under color of authority, the Madera county district attorney’s office said, as well as one drug-related charge. The assaults date back to 2014, but mostly occurred in the last two years, prosecutors said.
Advocates say the charges scratch the surface of systemic misconduct and sexual violence in the women’s prison, and correctional authorities last year said investigators had identified more than 22 victims of Rodriguez’s abuse.
Rodriguez, 54, was being held on $7.8m bail, and it was not clear if he had a lawyer.If convicted on all charges, Rodriguez could be sentenced to more than 300 years in prison.
The DA’s office said the 95 charges include 39 individual sexual assaults. A 48-page complaint alleges that Rodriguez abused people throughout the facilities, including in a substance abuse building, in a clinic, before and after court appearances and in the parole hearing area where incarcerated people appear before commissioners who decide whether to grant their freedom. He is also accused of bringing heroin into the prison.
Advocates working with survivors said there was a culture of abuse, fear and retaliation in the facility that allowed him to continue his behavior for years.
At a state hearing last month, state senator Lola Smallwood-Cuevas noted that Rodriguez was accused of abusing more than 1% of the entire women’s prison population, and that allegations against him date back more than 10 years: “Twenty-two women came forward, and we know when women come forward, there are often women and other victims who don’t.”
She also noted a 2021 inspector general report that found the California department of corrections and rehabilitation (CDCR) poorly handled more than 60% of all complaints against staff by incarcerated people.
“If one officer is getting away with this for more than a decade, he is backed up by other officers and by the system, which is not only allowing the culture of sexual violence to continue, but condoning it,” said Colby Lenz, an advocate with the California Coalition for Women Prisoners, a group that has been assisting the survivors. “This is not just one bad apple.”
The women’s prison where Rodriguez worked for 12 years is located in Chowchilla, a small city about 120 miles (190km) south-east of San Francisco. Rodriguez retired in August after being approached about the assaults as part of an internal investigation, CDCR said in December.
The investigation, which found that Rodriguez may have engaged in sexual misconduct against at least 22 incarcerated people, was handed over to the district attorney’s office earlier this year. Rodriguez had worked for CDCR since 1995.
“These allegations are in no way a reflection on the vast majority of correctional officers who act professionally and do their best to make sure prisoners serve their time while remaining safe,” the DA’s office said on Wednesday. “It is our hope that the removal and arrest of this defendant encourages them to continue in their honorable profession upholding the law every day.”
Two unidentified accusers filed lawsuits in December alleging Rodriguez sexually assaulted them at the prison, which holds about 2,100 residents.
Survivors who have spoken up have faced persistent retaliation, said Lenz: “They live in terror both from the trauma of the sexual violence itself and ongoing harassment and retaliation by officers, and they never have a chance to properly grieve or heal. They have to continue to live with their abusers who have the keys to their cells.”
Advocates have called on the state to expedite the release of survivors.
“They are constantly under threat. It’s horrific and extremely isolating, and there is nowhere safe to turn inside,” said Amika Mota, executive director of the Sister Warriors Freedom Coalition, another group working with the victims.
A CDCR spokesperson on Thursday pointed to the department’s earlier statement on the investigation into Rodriguez, which said “retaliation against anyone who reports these kinds of allegations as well as retaliation against those who cooperate with investigations is not tolerated”.
A 2003 federal law known as the Prison Rape Elimination Act created a “zero-tolerance” policy for the sexual assault of incarcerated people. But California prison officials have still been accused of sexual misconduct in recent years. That includes Israel Trevino, a former correctional officer at the Central California Women’s Facility, who was fired in 2018 after being accused of groping and making sexually harassing comments.
An Associated Press investigation found that a high-ranking federal bureau of prisons official, who formerly worked at a women’s prison in the San Francisco Bay Area, was repeatedly promoted after allegations that he assaulted detainees. Another investigation found a pattern of sexual abuse by correctional officers at the women’s facility. The US government is now facing a backlash for seeking to deport survivors of the abuse who are also non-citizens.
Recent civil cases have also exposed widespread sexual abuse of youthinside juvenile prisons in Los Angeles.
These types of accusations extend beyond California. Former prison officers in Kentucky and New Jersey have recently been charged with sexually abusing or assaulting incarcerated people.
