2023, The Year of Self-Sabotage

Has anyone noticed the trend businesses have been on in 2023? There's a LOT of self-sabotage going on in the business world. Throughout my life, and everyone else has their own observations too, once in a while you see a company make a boneheaded decision about their product or service. And once in a while you'll see a decision get made that is bad, but maybe it at least has some justification (even to an anti-capitalist goober like myself). But this year has been nonsensical moves of greed or product/service sabotage that make no sense for longevity or harm what's in the best interest of the consumer.

Activision-Blizzard: The Overwatch debacle, and Diablo Immortal's scummy practices.

Netflix: The account sharing debacle.

Twitter: Maximum divorced loser Elon Musk destroying its functionality and branding and we still call it Twitter.

Reddit: Inspired by Musk's stupidity, the API tools debacle. Shame on the Reddit communities for not knowing how to strike btw (you don't put a time limit on it).

Hollywood: Pulling shows and films from streaming services to declare them as failed products and somehow get a tax write-off for it.

Also Hollywood: Willing to take quarterly losses greater than the annual cost to meet the demands of two striking unions put together.

Unity: Announced in the past day that it will charge developers a fee for installations because greed.

Titan Submersible: "Safety is for losers" says billionaire who proceeds to use his shoddy tech to do a murder-suicide.

Starbucks: Breaking ALL of the labor laws to try and stop unionization. Admittedly a reach to be on this list but the situation (like all the others) is ongoing and can compound.

Embracer: A massive corporate company that bought a bunch of smaller companies. Thought a 2 billion dollar deal with the Saudi government was a sure thing, so they spent 2 billion dollars on stuff. Deal falls through, so they start closing companies they acquired.

That's just the ones I can remember off the top of my head. These aren't business decisions done for the sake of consumers. These are all decisions done to spite consumers or the workers who produce the products and services.

People try to remember years as being the "year of" something. And it's a thing I do too. For me, 2023 is the year of corporate self-sabotage.

Workshop Update: Kaidan Revoiced - Community Expansion 1.0 Launch!

After two years of development, the Kaidan Workshop Staff is proud to present Kaidan Revoiced - Community Expansion (KRCE)!

First and foremost, none of this would be possible without livtempleton graciously giving us permission for our project! Throughout the years, the assets she's allowed the Skyrim modding community to build upon has kept Kaidan alive in thousands of modlists, providing the opportunity for even more players to enjoy her original creations; we're very honored to be added to the list of modders whose creations are inspired by her work. When we started the Workshop, we had no idea if anyone would even notice our project; a new voice actor, a new iteration of an already established character, and no product to show for it in advance. The only thing we could offer the general public at the time was the promise of transparency and community cooperation throughout the process. So we created a budget for revoicing Kaidan, a plan for community involvement, and hit the ground running. We added new staff, taught ourselves new skills as the scope of the project evolved, and leaned on the advice, ideas, and encouragement from our community. Alongside the (mostly) monthly updates on our Tumblr and taking suggestions from our 'I Had An Idea!' Discord channel, our methods for ensuring transparency during development evolved; our Community Team began hosting public meetings via our Discord to discuss our current workflow, answer questions, and conduct live script readings of our original scripts, to ensure that our Writing Team was matching the original tone set by livtempleton. We also streamed our beta footage on Twitch, trying our best to stress test the new framework built by our Creation Kit Team while also taking more suggestions from our audience for future content. Finally, we were incredibly pleased to be able to host an Open Beta for KRCE this past October & November for our Discord community, as a special thank you for their support. We were able to get some excellent feedback on some of our new follower features, as well as hunt down any missed audio or errors our internal testing missed. All in all, it took many, many people to bring this mod to life, and our Staff is incredibly humbled and grateful for the support of everyone involved. While this 1.0 version will be available indefinitely for those who prefer it, the Workshop Staff is very excited to begin creating more original content moving forward into 2025! One of our original scripts for the Daedric quest "Pieces of the Past" is in the 1.0, so you can check it out to get a sense of the tone our writers are going for! 3 Job Ideas for Age Regressors

I know that many regressors, like myself, need jobs. As a permaregressor (Albeit one who stays at a pre-teen age most of the time) who is physically and intellectually disabled and needs an 'easier' job, I also know it can be insanely difficult and overwhelming to work at most places. So here's a list of jobs (and their pay rates) that may not be as overwhelming, taken from interviews with people in my area and surrounding areas, when asked about people with disabilities!! This list is organized by Job Description, Potential Downsides, and Perks. These don't need an education past a High-School Diploma, though the last one requires a food-handlers' license!

Library Assistant -~$12/hour I may be biased, but my job as a Librarian is what inspired this post in the first place! My job includes simple cleaning (mopping the front/lobby area, emptying trash cans, stocking toilets with sanitary supplies), alphabetizing and organizing books and movies, and helping people check out things. Most of the time, honestly, I just sit around scrolling Tumblr. It's a very simple and easy job. I will say though that walking around a lot to do the organizing does hurt my legs and ankles if I don't sit down frequently. Other than that, it's perfect for age regressors! You can spend lots of time in the kids' area too! And job perks can include free coloring sheet printing, and my library even has an employees-only (and anyone else if they ask nicely tbh) snack and beverage bar, stocked with crackers and hot chocolate/coffee >:3 My library is very very lax!

Toy Store Worker - Up to $22/hour My local area has a toy store, and this is the description listed on their page: Cleaning and organizing the store. Helping customers find just the right gift for their loved ones. Developing and maintaining customer relationships. Ensuring that all customers leave happy. A toy store seems like the PERFECT job for a regressor, and I can imagine that it would be easy on your body too, as the most physical activity you'll do (according to a family friend who owns the Toy Store) is cleaning and helping families look for juuuust the right toy. The only downside I can really think of is that it may be loud/overwhelming to have kids come in and play with the toys all day, but if you're alright with that, it's perfect! Lots of toy stores and retail stores offer secret benefits too, like discounts or even free first picks!

Frozen Yogurt/Ice Cream Store Worker - ~$12/Hour, Food Handlers' Needed We have a super neat Fro-Yo store around my area called Sweet Frog, one of those weigh-to-pay places that you can pile toppings onto! The Job description according to Google and supported by the head manager at our local Fro-Yo place is: Frozen Yogurt Makers are responsible for preparing and serving frozen yogurt to customers, ensuring quality and consistency in the product. They maintain cleanliness, operate yogurt machines, and provide excellent customer service. According to Mrs. Head Manager, their perks include an Employee Discount on Fro-Yo, Flexible weekly hours, and an accessible and encouraging environment for many disabled workers, including one of the sweetest people I've ever met who has Down Syndrome and High-Needs Autism. They also give out free employee T-Shirts that have their super cute mascot on them!! Some downsides she mentioned might include having to stand for long periods of time, working with rowdy children, and having to clean and stock finicky machines. Also please be aware if you look into Sweet Frog that they're a heavily Christian brand, though the people I've spoken to are very accepting and sweet!

Elon Musk’s takeover of federal government infrastructure is ongoing, and at the center of things is a coterie of engineers who are barely out of—and in at least one case, purportedly still in—college. Most have connections to Musk and at least two have connections to Musk’s longtime associate Peter Thiel, a cofounder and chairman of the analytics firm and government contractor Palantir who has long expressed opposition to democracy. WIRED has identified six young men—all apparently between the ages of 19 and 24, according to public databases, their online presences, and other records—who have little to no government experience and are now playing critical roles in Musk’s so-called Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) project, tasked by executive order with “modernizing Federal technology and software to maximize governmental efficiency and productivity.” The engineers all hold nebulous job titles within DOGE, and at least one appears to be working as a volunteer. The engineers are Akash Bobba, Edward Coristine, Luke Farritor, Gautier Cole Killian, Gavin Kliger, and Ethan Shaotran. None have responded to requests for comment from WIRED. Representatives from OPM, GSA, and DOGE did not respond to requests for comment. Already, Musk’s lackeys have taken control of the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) and General Services Administration (GSA), and have gained access to the Treasury Department’s payment system, potentially allowing him access to a vast range of sensitive information about tens of millions of citizens, businesses, and more. On Sunday, CNN reported that DOGE personnel attempted to improperly access classified information and security systems at the US Agency for International Development (USAID), and that top USAID security officials who thwarted the attempt were subsequently put on leave. The AP reported that DOGE personnel had indeed accessed classified material. “What we're seeing is unprecedented in that you have these actors who are not really public officials gaining access to the most sensitive data in government,” says Don Moynihan, a professor of public policy at the University of Michigan. “We really have very little eyes on what's going on. Congress has no ability to really intervene and monitor what's happening because these aren't really accountable public officials. So this feels like a hostile takeover of the machinery of governments by the richest man in the world.”

[...] “To the extent these individuals are exercising what would otherwise be relatively significant managerial control over two very large agencies that deal with very complex topics,” says Nick Bednar, a professor at University of Minnesota’s school of law, “it is very unlikely they have the expertise to understand either the law or the administrative needs that surround these agencies.” Sources tell WIRED that Bobba, Coristine, Farritor, and Shaotran all currently have working GSA emails and A-suite level clearance at the GSA, which means that they work out of the agency’s top floor and have access to all physical spaces and IT systems, according a source with knowledge of the GSA’s clearance protocols. The source, who spoke to WIRED on the condition of anonymity because they fear retaliation, says they worry that the new teams could bypass the regular security clearance protocols to access the agency’s sensitive compartmented information facility (SCIF), as the Trump administration has already granted temporary security clearances to unvetted people. This is in addition to Coristine and Bobba being listed as “experts” working at OPM. Bednar says that while staff can be loaned out between agencies for special projects or to work on issues that might cross agency lines, it’s not exactly common practice.
