Pre-prodcution for 'Ginger Snap' (02/03/24)

After making tweaks and changes to the script, we began the process of pre-production for 'Ginger Snap'. For me as the director, the first think I did was consult our DoP, Lewis, and begin to work on a shot list. Following this, I drew up a story board to aid us in establishing an idea of what our film would look like, and also begin scheduling for our shoot days.

After this, my second priority was finding a location that would work for our shoot dates and visual needs for the film. Our producer, Francis, took the initiative to email and call up some small cafes in the Edinburgh area which we are currently awaiting a response from. In the mean time, I created a flyer which could be distributed to some places of interest.

Moving forward, we plan to establish weekly meeting times with our team to further discuss aspects such as casting and production design. As of right now, we are making good progress on the pre-production stage of 'Ginger Snap'!

Week 1 - Tutorial

I would like to connect with local creatives who are well connected to their cultural identity, becuase as someone who has Māori whakapapa I would love to work to create better outcomes, and culturally sensitve design for my community.

I would like to connect with Johnson Mckay from Ira, who has lead creative teams for clients such as Kiwibank, Mcdonalds and L&P who all discovered the need for culturally sensitive design outcomes.

Ira is very passionate about connecting communities and has a core goal of seeing a thriving Aotearoa. They run and develop workshops for both individual clients and the wider community.  Johnson has a very strong connection to both his whaanau and Te Ao Māori, with his sons having key roles on his team.

I find his work quite engaging as it accurately captures the essence of Te Ao Māori, staying culturally sensitive, while still creating compelling and gorgeous design.

What excites you in the design and creative communities you are reaching?

I am excited by seeing just the range of outcomes that studios in NZ have prodcuted, and knowing that if I chose to, I am not limited to simply designing logos or posters, but instead could bring my talents into many areas.

Who would you like to share a meal/work with?

I would for sure want to share a meal with Elliot Ulm, who is from Aussie, but he is super talented - especially for someone who hasn't done design school. I feel like i would like to work for an agency such as Blink studio, who do a range of outcomes and a big range of clients.

Who would you like to mentor you?

Just working with Andrew and Ramon from my church Equippers, I get to see how great they are not only creatively, but also how they carry themselves personally, and how much they give back. That's really inspiring.
