At time of posting this His Man 2 is at 7 of 14 episodes.  Since we are at the half way point in the show (and because I’ve become obsessed), I’m doing a recap of what has happened so far.  Mostly just the main points.  Going person by person from oldest to youngest.  Recap under the cut.

“shit!” you dropped to the floor, tripping for the third time tonight. your knees and elbows are bruised from attempting to catch yourself each time. but this time your reflexes didn’t kick in and full on belly flopped against the hard ground. you couldn’t keep the tears at bay anymore, curling into the fetal position and sobbing.

all eight boys rushed to circle around you, eyes wide and full of concern. you’ve only cried like this in front of them a handful of times but that was mainly when you were on tour and extremely overwhelmed. never during dance practice.

“i’m okay, i promise.” once the pain subsided a bit you sat up and explained to them that it was just really bad cramps and that the last fall hit you right in the gut.

jisung brought you a bottle of water and some medicine and kissed you on the top of your head before leaving. the rest of the members either gave you a hug (not too tight though) or squeezed your shoulder as to show you that they cared, and then they all left.

well, except for minho and chan.

you looked at them confused as the members filtered out of the room. “i’m okay, you can go back to the dorms. i just need a minute for the medicine to kick in.” you smiled at them.

“i’ll wait with you, can’t have you getting kidnapped walking back in the dark all by yourself.” bangchan said while sitting on the ground behind you, outstretching his legs on either sides of yours. you were about to question him about it until he placed his hands on your shoulders and started kneading your sore muscles. your head fell forward as you felt immediate relief, sighing in contentment.

“yeah, we can’t just leave you here in pain.” minho said, sitting directly in front of you.

“i’m not a baby, min, i can take care of myself.” the exhaustion started to kick in as chan was easing all the tension from your upper back. you started to lean back against him without realizing it and soon you were completely surrounded by his chest and arms, his warmth radiating off of him making you all the more comfortable.

“you don’t seem to be complaining now” chan snickered. you snapped your eyes open and tried to break free from his hold, in which you failed from being to weak, or at least that’s what you tell yourself. “oh, stop being stubborn and rest for a minute.”

you gave in and relaxed into him again, this time sliding down until only your head was in his lap, using his thigh as a pillow. you closed your eyes as a yawn escaped from you, feeling a hand wrapped around your ankle you opened them to see minho maneuvering up onto his knees and taking both your ankles into his hands. “what are you doing, minho?”

“i heard this helps with cramps.” he says as he confidently folds you legs forward and against your abdomen, not too hard but just enough to cause a little bit of tightness in your lower stomach. it hurts. and you’re about to tell him so until he pulls them back towards him, the tightness releases and it felt so relieving. you probably looked ridiculous, the way he was stretching your legs like you were in fact a baby.

“did it help?” his eyes wide like a curious cat.

“yeah, it actually did.” you rolled your eyes and he laughed cause of your annoyance. he continued moving your legs back and forth, putting pressure on your stomach and then pulling back once more. “i appreciate you both staying with me,” you began. “it means the world to me to know i have people who sincerely care about me and care for me. i’ve never had that with anyone, and it’s actually really nice.”

minho sat your legs back on the ground. “we’ll never leave you, y/n, okay? you’re stuck with us until the day we all die, and even then i’m sure i’ll find you in the afterlife to aggravate you some more.” he gave you a wide smile, giving you a full view of his bunny teeth.

“yeah, if we don’t make your life equally miserable and fun, who will?” chan poked your cheek. you giggled and just smiled the widest you have in a long time.

“i wouldn’t want it to be anyone else.”

“awww you do love us!” minho squealed.

“oh, shut up!” you kicked him in the shoulder blade, not hard enough to hurt him but enough to push him on his back. he still acted as though he’d been shot nonetheless. “you’re so dramatic.”

as all your laughing died down another yawn came from you, which made chris yawn too. “has the medicine kicked in yet?” minho asked sitting back up.

you tested it by pushing yourself up and standing to your feet. “yeah i feel pretty good actually.”

“good.” was all you heard from behind you before chan was lifting you up bridal style.

“what are you doing?!?!” you screamed, wrapping your hand around his neck, scared he might drop you. “chris, i can walk, i’m not helpless.”

“oh, shut up and let’s go home.” minho whined.

you couldn’t argue with that.

hello! can I ask if you have any list of accounts you trust when it comes to f1 data? i noticed there are accounts who come to different conclusions with things like race pace data, and i guess it's their methodologies that differ... i don't want to be misled if somehow there's bias.

So I have a few.

First I want to say that no account is perfect and sometimes mistakes are made etc. So always keep that in mind.

I really like @/F1telemetrydata they do good work and just process the numbers and I think their graphs are also presented in a way that's a good representation of the data.

But yes this is an issue I see in Twitter data accounts all the time. Bias can be present in data accounts, even if it looks like it's just numbers. Very often they cherry pick data and present things in bad faith to make one driver look significantly better than another. I think it's usually pretty obvious when they are doing this.

And this is also a broader issue in statistics as well. Choosing the data to sample and how to present it can be a big issue and can easily be used to mislead people who do not know how the math works and how data should be presented.

If you are really wanting to combat bias I highly suggest looking at the raw data. Does it confirm what people are saying? Things like race pace and speed are pretty easy to pick up just by looking at the raw lap times. Processing it into graphs is nice and makes it easier to see the differences but the raw data does tell the truth.

Also be aware of what is helpful to compare. Sometimes we can compare stats but are they good things to compare? Do they tell us anything useful that a team might care about?

I also want to say that sometimes people and even analysts get terms wrong. I see people swap terms like race pace and speed all the time and those are different things. They are connected but they are different.

Speed would be single lap time Race pace is average lap time

You can get one really good flying lap in a race but then be slower than your teammate the rest and have severe drop offs in speed due to poor tyre management.

Also data really is only one part of the story of a race. Context always matters. Saying X was faster than X without mentioning that one driver had damage beyond their control is a bad faith comparison. The raw data would show a driver being faster, but that doesn't tell the whole story.

So a big thing is to pay attention to who tries to put things into context and who does not. When I put things into context myself and do comparisons I try to always pick a driver's best performance during a race etc. It usually helps make my point either way. For example any reporter or data analyst who did a comparison of Charles' pace to Carlos or any other driver from Bahrain and did not mention Charles serious mechanical issue with the brakes I do not trust. That is a case where even doing that comparison isn't really useful because a mechanical issue means the data is flawed. A lot of accounts and reporters just did a raw comparison without taking that into account and anyone who watched the race can tell that is in bad faith.

It is a fallacy to believe that the data tells 100% of the story. It doesn't. If someone looked at just the data from a race they would probably make very different judgements and assumptions than someone who did.

For example in Miami someone just looking at the data would go "Oh Oscar really lost a lot of pace on his second stint. He needs to work on his hard tyre pace." But someone who watched the race would know that Oscar's slower pace in the second half of the race was due to the fact he was battling with Carlos and then took damage. They'd know that his pace after that is not fully reflective of what his pace would be without damage, as well as the overall quality of his driving.

Again remember no one is perfect. I am not perfect and make mistakes/overlook something/fail to catch something altogether. A lot of data accounts are just one fan who loves the sport and wants to do math.

I prefer accounts that just process the raw data without editorializing(ex pointing out one driver against another) just show me the graphs etc, that's a very neutral way to do it.

You have brought up a broader issue in statistics. Like different ways of processing data, what to include vs exclude etc That is a big thing in all stats. And some people know how to massage numbers to fit an agenda. This happens all the time(especially in any kind of political data presentation)

I think the best thing is to be aware of bias, learn how to spot it, and then take it into account alongside the information someone is telling you. That's simple on paper but sometimes it's tricky in practice.

I realize this post has turned into a mini lecture on stats fallacies etc and I probably didn't need to say all of that, but hopefully it's educational to someone.

Numbers don't lie, but they sure do like to do loopty loops with the truth sometimes.

Abourt Rei Himura and BNHA Chapter 301

Now that I've read the official release of chapter 301 I can finally try to gather my thoughts. I think this time the particular rendition of dialogues and inflections provided by Caleb Cook is more crisp and clear than usual, especially in throwing "shade" upon Endeavor as a father figure. But let's do things in order...

Title: THE WRONG WAY TO PUT OUT A FIRE - a simple, but stark message that doesn't leave space for ambiguity. There was a fire, an imminent tragedy that could and should have been avoided, but whoever tried to fix it, did it all wrong and now we have to deal with a huge arson.

CARLESS HANDLING OF FIRE, on the other hand, doesn't quite cut it for me, because it seems like everything was caused by a foolish mistake. "I was carless and now I'm in a pinch"- type of situation, while it's perfectly clear that Endeavor and Rei decided purposefully which "strategy" to use with Touya. A BAD one to say it lightly. Rei's contribution and complicity is debatable, of course, and I'll touch on this later.

Let me get this clear though: I'm not trying in any way to critique the hard work of unofficial translators. I can't say anything relevant because I'm not a translator in the first place (I can barely understand English and my native language on a good day) and also because I am so grateful for everything they do in order to give us really good material FREE OF CHARGE basically a second after the release in Japan. I'm just interested about the different shades of subtext we can catch if we read the story through multiple filters. Every translation is unique because it carries the personal spin of the author even if the bias should be inexistent or ideally undetectable...

However, back to the chapter

REI'S CAGE

The first scene opens on a luxurious classic Japanese villa, with Enji, Rei and her parents discussing the motivation behind Enji's proposal. Or at least we initially think that's what's going on... Because in reality Rei's family couldn't care less about the motivation. Everything these people see is a wealthy, famous guy the next number one hero ready to take their daughter in marriage. I guess the Himuras are pretty broke, thight on cash, their old prestige is definitely gone and all they can do to save themselves from shame and poverty is "to sell" their only remaining asset.

During the whole ordeal, Rei is standing still, silent, cold as ice. She knows she doesn't really have a choice. How mortifying and sad is this? An adult, capable woman has no agency whatsoever, she is used again and again and she stoically accepts this treatment from every single dominant figure in her life until she can't be stoic anymore. I really hope Horikoshi's going to give her a much more proactive role in saving her family and it seems the narrative wants us to expect this type of character development.

I'd like to point out 2 panels in particular:

First one

In this scene the Todorokis are back from their trip to the doc, who clearly said they shouldn't try to conceive a child with a perfect quirk mix because it is dangerous (and morally questionable too). Rei understands this fact and tries to dissuade Enji, but he doesn't listen, because he's projecting all his pent-up resentment and frustration onto Touya. He knows how it feels to crush against an unbreakable wall, since he can't surpass All might and his son can't too. He had to learn this truth the hard way, so Touya needs to do the same. Enji is purposefully throwing upon his son years of failures, self consciousness and despair, just because the boy has to get it into his thick skull that he is a dud, just like his father. This is not a hopeless dad making a mistake bona fide, this is a broken man trying to destroy his self reflection by proxy, annihilating everything Touya is, swiping the kid's identity under the rug. He describes his son's dreams and sadness as something birthed from stubbornness. He is auto-convincing himself however (because Endeavor is not stupid). A little bit later he's basically saying: "Touya let's play make believe! We can go on like everything I had engulfed in your psyche never existed, you're a failed attempt so you don't exist. Your needs and wants are silly and useless, nothing worth dealing with now that I can't make you my prodigy. Why don't you go play with the other failures so that I don't have to look at myself while taking actually care of you. I don't want to see you, because it's too painful, because you're a remainder of my own inadequacy."

Note: If you want to read an incredibly well done analysis about Endeavor's motives and psyche, you can get it on @thyandrawrites , she's dwelt on everything extensively and way better than me.

I really want to talk about Rei though. In the panel I showed above, her expression is a bit tricky to analyse. At first she is very vocal about her position. She doesn't want to put Touya through useless suffering, especially since they have a scientific reason not to. They have no guarantee of success with other children, besides, they could possibly have to deal with other health related issues. However, all it takes to convince her in the end is Enji's half assed attempt at the "It's for Touya's sake" shtick. Is it really? Why doesn't she question her husband anymore?

Well... I think before Natsuo, she was probably hoping Touya would let go "naturally", with time and growth, maybe by taking interest in his other siblings. Rei said she wanted to have more children because in her mind they would have supported and loved each other. Maybe she was naive enough to think that a big family full of kids few years apart from each other was all Touya needed to distract himself from his purposes... BUT and here is the point I want to get across: She was deluding herself too, much like Enji. The ugly truth, in my opinion, is that Rei is a person prone to protect herself by going with everything other people want, especially if said people are capable of hurting her. Yes, she was hurt time and time again, but what would have happened if she really tried to stop Enji?

What I am trying to say is that Rei is the kind of person who endures to survive. She holds a "captive" mentality in which, by indulging her captor's desires, she can continue living with less possibile damage. If I stay still and silent, if I don't make a scene, I can go on, I can hold onto the few things I have that actually make me happy.

Let's think about it... Enji was so obsessed with his psychotic, power-hungry quest that he would have probably disown Rei. She would have been thrown away for a more compliant woman with an ice quirk, or something similar, this resulting in her probably losing everything, the respect and love of her family (the Himuras) and also her own children. Because we know Endeavor can definitely hold a grudge and is vendicative.

So, clarifying, Rei doesn't put up a fight because she is scared for herself in a way... She is scared to be hurt in the worst possible way (by losing her little bit of serenity), so her strategy is to endure and to keep up a facade of control and purpose.

Rei, ironically just like Touya and other characters in mha, doesn't really get what unconditional love is. Her family loves her until she can be useful to the Himura name and status, her husband loves her for her quirk. Her children, however, love her for who she is and she wants to stay with them... Only to be forced to leave them later anyway.

The few times Rei actually smiles are when she is with her babies. She is a deeply loving mother in her core, but her declining mental health makes her a very lacking caregiver.

This panel, in my opinion, shows the point of no return for Rei. She can't keep the glacial facade forever...

After Natsuo's turn to be deemed a failure, Endeavor is crazier than ever, because All Might is as popular and loved as ever and he hasn't make any progress into his eugenetic games. The last two images of Rei are very telling. She is exhausted, but she knows what her husband wants from her this time too. She looks like a lifeless doll and honestly I can easily see Shouto's conception as... Non consensual and I will stop here.

Then Shouto is born, the last, perfect specimen... And Rei isn't doing much for Touya, we can see she's apparently blind towards her eldest son's distress already after Natsuo's birth... But why?

Because she is actively avoiding to face the Touya's problems too.

If Touya is still suffering, is still feeling stressed and worthless, then everything Rei has endured, everything she pretended not to feel for the sake of her family has been completely useless. What Rei cannot look at is her own parental failure, is the concrete proof that while protecting herself and her peace she did not protect her children too, because the two interests were never really aligned, even if she really believed so. She never had a functional family to preserve in the first place and everything she accepted to do was all for the sake of a false sense of belonging.

However is too easy to say she should've rebelled against Enji and dumped his sorry ass. Abuse traps you and your abuser too in a cage tricky to escape.

What I imagine will happen next chapter is one of two things:

Enji stops Touya by using brute force, probably also saying something really scarring to reinforce the notion that Shouto is the only child he cares about.

Rei stops Touya by using her quirk. This act could be considered by Touya another confirmation that even his mother actually does something by her own accord only when Shouto's safety is at risk

Necessary conclusions

I don't blame Rei for her actions too much. She is a victim turned abuser by circumstances, but more importantly she's actually taken mesures to prevent herself from hurting her children again. She's trying to heal for her family's sake, really this time. Ten years spent dealing with guilt and having actual therapy seem a good plan to me. And now she's the one ready to snap Enji back to reality.

Enji, on the other hand, is trying too. It's too little too late, but if he stops avoiding reality and hardly works on understanding his family's point of view I don't think he is completely unredeemable. I don't see him surviving his last confrontation with Touya, thought... But I could be totally wrong.

Obviously everything I've said it's my personal analysis on Rei's character, as I interpret her actions and words, so feel free to contradict me and/or to add anything you might see fit.

I think they have a great dynamic together and they're just two girls who historically have been bashed so much by the fandom. They can be happy together and Kyoko can hold Haru back every time anyone says anything mean.)

Spanner x Haru (Idk I just think it'd be fun. Haru is a smart cookie and can probably hold a conversation fine. Try out the different lollipop flavors, suggest her own. Oooh I loved the on you did on asmo! Single handedly made him one of my fav brothers! Maybe a mammon analysis next?

I'd been meaning to revamp the one of Asmo but it's been so long since I've even tried to advance the story in OM, let alone log in...

Based on my loose memory of the game, I could whip some stuff up for Mammon. But I would have to get a lot of sources backed up for key parts of the story or devilgrams to give me context to what I'd be writing. For Mammon, his would probably be the effects of merciless bullying, and how he tends to take it on the chin and pretend it doesn't bother him.

I think I've mentioned it in Asmo's analysis, but I don't believe for a second that all demons are evil, nor do I believe that fallen angels (which I will say over and over again, the brothers are FALLEN ANGELS- THERE IS A DIFFERENCE!) are evil. They are a medium, like humans, but have a clear bias to which side they will take, or how far they will indulge. I went in further detail about that specifically, here.

That being said, I do think Mammon is part of the glue that keeps the family together. The older brothers mostly fill that role well, with the exception of Leviathan who only seems to be part of the team when it suits him. Mammon, from my memory, is someone who cares deeply about the emotional state of everyone around him, whether he knows them well enough or not. By nature, he wants everything regardless of value, and so that expends to you early on, especially since you're a kind of human he may not have seen in centuries, probably.

I come from experience on things that Mammon deals with, as my older siblings would bully me a lot growing up, which resulted in my horrible self esteem. I tend to talk myself up a LOT, having a sense of grandiose about myself, to compensate for my loss of esteem. Something I can see in Mammon AND Asmo, though with Mammon he tends to lie and act like he doesn't care, when in reality he doesn't know how to shut that part of him down because it is his very virtue at birth. He is someone who is sensitive and cares too much, but because he has rarely seen gratitude extended to him, or the same level of sensitivity or gesture of thanks, he tries to dumb it down to feel like these things are fair.

Something I do, too. I'm not going to go into detail about it, but I've had a few people in the professional fields tell me that Mammon's character is very similar to mine; when I convinced them to give it a look anyways.

I think the amount of abuse Mammon takes can lead him in a few directions;

One is where he just accepts it because if they can't blow off steam, they're just going to explode, and he cares too much about their mental and emotional well-being to let that happen.

Another is where he finally snaps and says he's dealt with the same traumas as them (Beel and Belphie especially, as they were right there when Lilith was killed, and Mammon was the one to hold your dead body in ch.16) and deserves as much consideration and respect as the others.

The last is where he shuts down completely and blocks them out. In a fashion similar to Levi, really. I want more than anything for Mammon to just lay into his family- I want them all to lay into each other and be honest.

There's so much nuisance and complexity, especially in characters like Lucifer and Belphie, simply because they aren't transparent with each other. Even now, they fail to do so properly. You can't expect that from all of them, you can't expect that from human beings. But you could at least thing someday Mammon will drop the act and say something. Anything.

But alas, he's too busy chasing you. At least you care to balance the sensitivity and gratitude he subtly (not so subtly) extends to you. Right?

The last thing about sign of four I do need to address is yeah, there's the Horrific Amounts Of Racism in that one and the whiplash hearing it is just ridiculous because they seem to be so knowledgeable in all other areas and fairly... politically correct, taking sherlock's original misogyny as a purposeful character flaw, but then they just mention someone indigenous once and suddenly its all parrotting racist propaganda and just... really awful shit. Scandal in Bohemia was a fucking ride, first of all, before we even get to Sherlock's girlboss arc we have to discuss how gay the whole situation was and how Doyle's attempt at making them less gay failed spectacularly

Like he's all "ah yes I need to marry off watson and uhhh make sherlock ummmm interact with a woman so they dont look gay" but he does it SO BADLY that it makes them look EVEN GAYER

cause i mean, even the conversation they had about watson getting married back in sign of four was gay af, but how Doyle handled things afterward was in no way straighter.

Cause you know, the man kind of wrote himself into a corner with the fact of Watson narrating these stories. So Watson has to be around to witness them, and to witness Sherlock's own thought process rather privately, so he has to be around sherlock at night, a lot. But trying to come up with a reason for that happening just... it didn't occur to Doyle. He just went. Ah yes this makes sense. And it's Watson just like Sleeping Over At Sherlock's like every other goddamn day and every time his wife leaves town and having them basically still live that cute domestic home life but they have absolutely no excuses for doing it anymore. It's quite funny

What do you think about the Citadel arc? Specifically, about Anakin and Tarkin's interaction, and Anakin kind of... liking Tarkin's perspective on how war should be handled? I'm asking because I have always felt it quite out of character, I mean yeah no doubt he could agree that the Jedi should not be the ones leading the Republic army because he knows it's a bit hypocritical, but on the rest... I don't think Anakin would get along with him so well? What's your take? :)

I’ll start by being super honest: tcw!Tarkin creeps me out. I don’t even know why. He just does.  And I don’t enjoy his interaction with Anakin (or any other character) because of that. That being said, I don’t think there was anything OOC about his interactions with Anakin. I don’t see them as friends or even friendly. I see it more as a mutual respect type of thing. They are both pragmatics. They have their own agendas but they understand the seriousness of the situation and how ineffective the Jedi are in handling the war.

Also, I think Anakin’s respect for Tarkin involves more than just “he agree with me”. Anakin has always been different from most Jedi. His past (and Palpatine’s “lessons”) made him more critical of the Order and to hear a high ranking official openly criticize the Order probably made him feel like his owns ideas were legitimized.

No one was ever quite that openly anti-Jedi in Anakin’s presence before. All previously criticism came from enemies (Dooku, Ventress, Separatists, etc.) whom Anakin was taught by the Jedi are mad and shouldn’t be heard. Padmé and Palpatine might disagree with the Order’s methods but they are never THAT harsh.  Also, remember that Tarkin didn’t gave the Seps the information and, in Anakin’s book, that makes him a stand-up guy. So, to have his ideas validated by a loyal and sane GAR officer is what made him more open to Tarkin as a person.

We need to acknowledge the bias against certain characters and their criticism of the Jedi. we see characters like Dooku, Ventress, Tarkin and Barriss saying, pretty straightforwardly, what’s wrong with the Jedi and why they are losing and yet the Jedi (and most of the audience) dismiss those claims because of who is saying them.

The thing is, and it hurts me to say it, Tarkin was right (damn, this is something I never thought I would say). Let’s take a look at their interactions and see why Tarkin and Anakin were right and why they ended up respecting each other. 

Tarkin: I reserve my trust for those who take action, general Skywalker.Anakin: Then let me remind you, we rescued you back there. And I reserve my trust for those who understand gratitude, Captain Tarkin. [TCW 03x18]

Here it’s established their differences (and why they will never be real friends). Tarkin is contemptuous. He does not trust the Jedi and their ability to act the way he judges to be right one. Only the actions Tarkin deems right truly matter. Anakin, on the other hands, admires loyalty, friendly, humility. He may not agree with the Order but he doesn’t dismiss it. they are both practical men, willing to do what’s necessary to end the war, but their motivations will always keep them at odds.

Tarkin: I am concerned that the jedi have elected this child to lead the group. Rex: I’ve served with her many times, and I trust her, captain. [TCW 03x19]

Here’s a truth bomb that no one wants to acknowledge. Tarkin and Anakin were the only ones concerned by the fact a teenager girl was involved in a war. Again, they were worried about Ahsoka’s presence there for very different reasons but we can’t deny the Jedi’s treatment of children played a part in their downfall (especially this child). Anakin, like Tarkin, is aware that this is wrong. I don’t think they both discuss this particular subject on screen but Tarkin makes it pretty obvious that he’s not pleased with the situation (Ahsoka being there) and the Arc focus a lot on Anakin’s protecting Ahsoka so I like to see as a nice parallel there.

Tarkin: This ordeal only demonstrates how effective facilities like The Citadel are. Pity it ended up in separatist hands and not ours.Anakin: He has a point. [TCW 03x19]

I think this is the first time they openly agree on something. It shows how far they are both willing to go to achieve their ends. We (the audience) know what their ends are, however, they don’t. It’s important to remember that while we know what kind of man Tarkin, Anakin doesn’t. Anakin sees Tarkin as a respectable GAR office who wants to save the Republic and nothing else. He had no way of knowing the kind of horrors Tarkin would commit if he ever get his hands in a place like the Citadel. And Tarkin has no way of knowing Anakin is against imprisoning enemies without trial in secret prisons.

As I said before, their agreement is superficial. They agree the ends justify the means but they completely disagree on the ends and the means.

Tarkin: You may have earned my trust, general Skywalker, but my faith in your comrades is still lacking.Anakin: You lack faith in the jedi.Tarkin I find their tactics ineffective. The jedi code prevents them from going far enough to achieve victory, to do whatever it takes to win, the very reason why peacekeepers should not be leading a war. Again, superficial agreement. Tarkin’s secret solution is mass murder, torture and genocide. Anakin’s secret solution is for the Jedi to get more involved, fight corruption, teach communities how to protect themselves, etc. But since they don’t know that, thye believe they are on the same page. And for Anakin, to hear this sort of Jedi criticism from a “reliable” source validates his ideas and makes Tarkin seem like an intelligent and mindful officer.

Ahsoka: Why did master Piell have to share half the intel with that guy? It’s like he’s not even grateful we rescued him.Anakin: Captain Tarkin feels the jedi should be relieved from the burden of leading the war effort.Ahsoka: That’s ridiculous.Anakin: Maybe, but we aren’t soldiers. We’re peacekeepers. The jedi code often prevents us from going far enough to achieve victory.Obi-wan: A rather simple point of view.Anakin: Either way, he is a good captain. [TCW 03x19]

This right here is exactly why Anakin listens to Tarkin. Every time Anakin criticizes the Order this happens. His thoughts are dismissed. The Jedi, being peacekeepers, shouldn’t be involved in war? that’s ridiculous! Now remember that Anakin spent 10 years of his life being told the Jedi couldn’t help his mother and fight slavery because their are peacekeepers and not law enforcers. THAT’s ridiculous. Anakin knows first hand the hypocrisy of the Jedi Council and every time he tries to point it out he’s dismissed. And suddenly, this officer appears and he’s saying all these things Anakin always tried to say, so, of course, Anakin will listen to him. That’s exactly how Palpatine got to him the first place. By pointing out all the wrongs Anakin already knew existed and acknowledging them.

Anakin, like everyone else, wants to have his feelings and ideas acknowledged. Here’s an exemple: Anakin wants people to acknowledge that slavery is an issue because the Republic doesn’t care about slaves. The Jedi tell him it’s not their problem and there’s nothing they can do about it. Palpatine tells him it’s a problem, the corrupt senate is the reason why and that he’ll try do to something about it. Which opinion will Anakin deem more sensible? Of course, he’ll respect the one that acknowledge his suffering.

If the Jedi were more willing to discuss “uncomfortable subjects” and teach their students to think for themselves Anakin would’ve never been in this situation. He ends up gravitating towards guys like Palpatine and Tarkin because they are the only ones to seem to recognize the problems he knows exist.

Tarkin: I’ve fallen into favor with the chancellor.He shall support me.Anakin: Oh, I happen to know the chancellor quite well, myself. [TCW 03x20]

This was the nail in the coffin. If Palpatine respects and listens to this guy so why shouldn’t Anakin?

Tarkin: I wish more Jedi had your military sensibilities. Perhaps I can inform the chancellor of your valor.Obi-wan: I’m not sure what to think of your new ally.Anakin: Well, I think we need people like him. This is a war. If we aren’t willing to do what it takes to win, we risk losing everything we try to protect.Obi-wan: Unfortunately, war tends to distort our point of view. If we sacrifice our code, even for victory, we may lose that which is most important: Our honor. [TCW 03x20]

I love Obi-wan with all my heart but this is exactly why they failed. They already sacrificed their code. They did long before the war started. And even if they hadn’t, they sacrificed when they, the peacekeepers, accepted to fight the war. The Jedi are not worried about honor or their code. They were willing to assassinate their enemies (that’s canon btw). Jedi hypocrisy strikes again. This is already way too long so I’ll try to keep it short:

Anakin and Tarkin do not know each. Not really. They agree the Jedi Order is making mistakes and that is it. They have no idea how far the other is willing to go or what they really want. They respect each other’s opinion but they are not friends (because they don’t truly know each other).

I don’t think it’s out of character for Anakin to agree with Tarkin because Anakin has no idea what he is agreeing with. Anakin has criticized the Order’s methods before, so he siding with someone doing the same is natural. Besides, Anakin remained in character by defending Ahsoka’s abilities (and everyone else’s too). Anakin’s only agrees with Tarkin on the political aspects of the Order. He still respects the Jedi abilities to overcome hardship, to save people and get the job done.
