Aegon the Eternal Scapegoat

Otto didn't do any PR moves when Rhaenyra had bastards, nor when Laenor “died” under mysterious circumstances and Rhaenyra remarried Daemon soon after, nor when Rhaenys murdered dozens of people at the coronation. He didn't care about PR when he hanged nobles, when he wanted the Greens to become kinslayers, he didn't care about PR when Aemond actually became a kinslayer and even defended him. Yet when Aegon makes an example of the ratcatchers, which literally any king would have done, PR is the most important thing in the world.

Alicent never prepared Aegon to rule but is pissed when he makes a bad decision. She's mean and cold to him, but is upset when he doesn't listen to her.

Aemond felt terrible about accidentally murdering Lucerys, who cut his eyes out and got away scot-free, but he doesn't give a shit about intentionally attempting to murder Aegon because he bullied him and he wants to be king. Lucerys was also a big threat to him even having the throne since if Rhaenyra became queen, he would be third in line, btw.

Rhaenyra wants to behead Aegon, who has become a cripple and never even wanted to be king, but she is willing to let Alicent get away scot-free when she pushed him on the throne.

He cannot catch a break. 😔

Sunfyre moved his wing to shield Aegon from Vhagar's fire.

He landed on his wounded belly, which means even though he fell out of the sky backwards, he angled his body to avoid crushing Aegon.

Eventually, when Aemond found him, he curled up around his rider.

people let their true colors shine through their consumption of media. case in point an adult man in a position of great power can rape his way through a numerous amount of serving girls in the castle he lives in and through the streets he frequently visits, but if he’s nice to exactly one member of the small folk due to said small folk member stroking his ego while he sits the throne suddenly *all* of his past evil actions are forgiven and he would ‘make a great king.’ in the same breath these people will cut to a moment twenty years in the woman claimant’s past where she stated, “their wants are of no consequence,” after stumbling upon a play that blatantly makes fun of her for being born a woman and being a girl heir, which in turn upsets her because it’s an insecurity she’s dealt with her entire life, something she’s never been able to forget. SHE isn’t forgiven, instead it’s used as a way to say she wouldn’t make a good queen and has no care at all for the small folk (she is the only royal family member attempting to keep the realm united as of right now).

Alicent’s relationships with her children can never be perfect and healthy because they’re objectively broken from their onset. And I’m so tired of seeing brain dead takes comparing the “superior” relationship Rhaenyra has with her kids to Alicent and her kids as some sort of gotcha.

Alicent’s exposure to motherhood isn’t on her terms in any conceivable way. Her children are the products of marital rape and coercion. They are conceived and born when she is a young teenage girl 15-18, well before she is ready to have them. They are born in quick succession with no opportunity for her to recover. And, they are from a man that not only does she not love but who neglects and belittles her.

All these factors severely damage Alicent’s ability to connect with her children in their infancy. And can you blame her given the circumstances?

She’s not ready to have them at all, so she doesn’t know how to properly mother them. And she likely resents them at least a bit in the early stages because they are the physical manifestation of not only her rape but the life she is trapped in. And that likely compounds with severe guilt because these are her babies, why doesn’t she feel the love and joy she’s supposed to?

And yet. She still loves and cares for them. She holds them as babies (despite being a baby herself) and dutifully cares for them even though she could simply dump them off with a nursemaid. She charges with a knife at Rhaenyra for them. She stands between them and a dragon from them. She betrays her closest companion of her childhood for them. She defies the king and their father for them.

I know that Alicent makes some crucial mistakes that ends up hurting her children. And I know that the scenes we see with Alicent and her kids often show her lack of connection to them. But despite the fact that her relationship to them can be nothing but fractured at the onset. There is so much passion and love and devotion she has for them.

These are not scenes of a woman who is a bad mother. These are scenes of a mother who adores her children and would do anything for them. But who can only love them roughly because she never had an opportunity to love them gently. Their very existence was never gentle for her and never fostered through love.

Alicent’s relationship with her kids may be broken. But it’s not her fault that it is. And no matter what there is love and it is her motivation. So stop acting like she is a bad mother when she’s fighting like hell to breed a relationship with them that is fostered in connection.

And yes, Daemon's daughters (Baela & Rhaena) and Daemyra's sons (Aegon III & Viserys II) survived the dance. Not Alicent. Sad. Nah, I'm joking. It's just as well that this bitch is dead. The Greens stans make me laugh trying to make believe that Alicent survived everyone in the end. No way. She will be locked up, hating the color green for the rest of her days before dying of fever. Not very glorious. (On the other hand, those in the comments who try to say that Daemon may have survived... No. He's fucking dead. Stop having weird fantasies about him fucking surviving !)

Let's see, Aegon was right about...

1. Considering smallfolk

2. Securing Harrenhal before Daemon builds an army

3. Securing Grover Tully's support after Lucerys' death

4. Burning the blockade sooner

5. Wanting a dragon to accompany Criston and Gwayne (they could've killed Moondancer and captured Baela)

And STILL many people are saying he was a dumb king! Even with him not recieving any preparation, his ideas would've eliminated the biggest problems that the Greens are facing now.

Something about Aemond clinging to the Targaryen legacy, trying to get all of its attributes, including the world's largest dragon, but still having trouble controlling Vhagar. Something about the fact that Aegon, at the same time, denies everything related to his family, but has a dragon that obeys him naturally and intuitively, even when Aegon speaks English. Something about how it echoes the Iron Throne that Aemond craves so much, but that Aegon gets by birthright even though he doesn't want it.
