I’m looking to sell some art work and get some input on how to start an apparel business. So who can give me some advice and who’s interested in purchasing some originals of drawings. You can even request a custom one.

One Minute
“You have one minute remaining”
I miss him already.
The hello is the sweetest.
The goodbye is the hardest.
Time stops.
My heart does not.
The final breath.
The sigh of sadness.
If love was a key, you would already be free.

The Beginning: How Our Long-Distance Prison Love Story Started
First things first, please introduce yourselves.
Eric: Hi, my name is Eric, and I was raised in a small town called Manhattan--Harlem, to be more specific. After making a few bad decisions and a horrific mistake, I now reside in a New York State correctional facility. I am currently in my 24th year of a 30 to life sentence.
Laura: I’m Laura. I was born in Manchester, England. Apart from a couple of blips finding myself living in different parts of the UK, I’ve spent the majority of my life in Greater Manchester.
How did you both meet?
Laura: We’re certainly the definition of a meet cute couple. That’s for sure! Eric and I met on Write A Prisoner. I’d dabbled with writing to incarcerated individuals across the United States over the years but for various reasons, I didn’t hit it off with them. Covid-19 and a failing long-term relationship made me bored and lonely and I guess I was looking for connection. Three and a half years later we’ve gone from friends to lovers, emails at the weekend to emails every day, writing to phone calls, phone calls to visits and now we’re getting married. Talk about an evolution!
Eric: I hadn't been in a relationship in a very, very long time. I mean, except for an 8-month blip, the whole of twenty years I spent "thuggin' it," as the guys without a partner would often say. Not to say that I wasn't looking... For nearly twenty years I had been looking for some sort of companionship. The sort of time I had, I think, was a deterrence for most women. And, so, after a few years I all but quit. That was to be the standard until I left prison...that is until 2021 where I made a friend, named Laura, who is the better half of this little project. Obviously, she didn't fall out of the sky. I plastered my face on Write a Prisoner for the third (fourth...fifth?) time. I still wasn't looking for someone, but was threatened by my sister-in-law (thanks Petra) on pain of death to join the site. Fast forward a few months (and some weak interactions with some people) later, I received a small card, from England, at my door. It was the first and only piece of written contact I had received, which caught my interest. It showed a level of care and effort, which was not the norm. The card was from a woman named Laura. It was cool. I still wasn't looking for anyone. Moreover, she made it frequently clear that she was already in a long-term relationship. We've been in a relationship together for two years and two months... It is a wonderful and fulfilling relationship.
What is Write A Prisoner?
Laura: It’s a website for incarcerated people to exchange letters with non-incarcerated people.
Eric: I think it is a professional site. There are a lot of other places that sell dreams for incarcerated individual's cash. It is a very positive outlet for both sides though. While there will always be a healthy scepticism (understandably) with utilizing services such as these, it should be understood that not all inside are their mistakes, nor are they undeserving of more pro social interactions. It is all about careful vetting (on both sides!), and reading the signs.
Laura: For sure. After learning some lessons from my previous experiences, I had a very clear criteria to hopefully lead me to the type of person I wanted to write to. Eric made a shortlist, which got shorter and shorter until it was just him.
What was your first impression of each other?
Eric: My first impression of Laura? Honest, warm, and funny. I also saw her as a definite type-A personality. My best friend thought she was a guy because of her penmanship. It was all in how she wrote, she was open about her life, openly cared about my opinion and what I had to say, and her sense of humor was right alongside mine.
Laura: To be clear, my handwriting is very neat; not scruffy! Based on his profile, I thought Eric was direct, open and had a good sense of humour. He wasn’t afraid to laugh at himself, which is something that I’m not very good at. Having had the opportunity to actually write to him I found that he was secure and confident, respectful and easy to talk to.
Why have you decided to co-write a blog?
Eric: As I said, I’m currently in my 24th year of my sentence. That sort of time is literally a lifetime, and more often than not, incarcerated individuals do not record their journey. I am also guilty of this--concentrating on navigating less than ideal circumstances and not using the opportunity to mark both the good times and the bad. So, now, with twenty-some-odd years behind me, events in my life are remembered by me and sometimes only fuzzily so. These holes have become that much more glaring since meeting Laura. Out of that spins this little project to openly catalog parts of us.
Laura: That’s very sweet. I feel bad now. Why am I doing this? I’m doing it to shut Eric up. He’s always telling me that my talent for writing is wasted. Now, I’m writing something he can get off my case. In addition to that, it’s never lost on me that Eric is living in an extremely volatile environment. I want to do my best to create a positive and forward-looking space for my partner in any way that I can. If we can do something together, that will help distract him from his living situation, then I’m for it.
Eric: There is a sneaky, ulterior point to this project. In a time of drama and sensationalism, we would like to highlight the point that these sorts of relationships do indeed work. Not without its difficulties, but they do--and well.
Laura: I completely agree with you. There is a huge stigma about relationships when one person is incarcerated, made worse by a number of TV shows, Instagram lives and TikTok videos. It’s not only the incarcerated individual who is judged! I’ve seen some vile hate towards non incarcerated individuals who are guilty of nothing more than loving someone. It’s important to us both that we show that like unhealthy relationships can exist outside of prison, healthy ones can flourish within them.
Eric: As much as we all like to believe, when we are in love, that our relationships exist in a vacuum, they don't. Our relationships become rooted in all the things we with which we find ourselves adjacent. We are all in conversation with everything in our world, so are our relationships. Those thing around us change and then inform our relationship. I truly believe the more aware we become of all that connective tissue, the better we can become at managing our relationships. That is why Laura and I will be examining subjects such as justice, time, distance, race, family, friendships, etc. through the prism of our relationship and relationships in general. Have I missed anything, heart?
Laura: We definitely want to use our real-life experiences to raise awareness of real-world issues, but we want to have fun too. This is our opportunity to share, memorialise and reflect on our funny moments, the hard moments, the sad moments. That might help someone else that’s in this position, or help give insight into something that might sound crazy to others.
That concludes our introductory post. If you’ve made it this far, thanks for reading. We appreciate you. We’re keen to hear your views and answer questions. Comment below or email us at [email protected] for a chance for your question/thought/opinion to be featured on our blog.
We’ll be putting out content by the end of every month. February’s blog post will cover communication and how we navigate this in our relationship.

And....Here We Go!
When I was finally over Covid, I decided to take a trip to visit my dad. While I was there, I was looking for ways to give back to the community and make a difference. I stumbled upon a nonprofit organization that was looking for volunteers to help with their mission to reform the prison system. As part of their work, he had me create a website with a diary area where inmates could write and try…

Prison wife/prison husband: a prison wife/husband is a prison inmate who is bound to another inmate [by choice or by force] and acts as their wife/husband in return for protection/safety (whether thats from other prisoners OR from the dominant inmate in the "relationship"). They're often expected to carry out "wife-like duties", such as cleaning their cell, being available for sex, bringing them things, buying them stuff, and, in some more severe cases, even going as far as helping cover for any crimes committed while in prison, putting money in their account, participating in crimes with them while in prison, etc. The prison wife/husband is expected to be loyal and subservient in order to stay in the dominant partner's good graces.

Hello, I’m a down to earth guy from the era of real talk. I stick to my story so that you can talk me up with confidence. I am a gentleman looking for beauty to compliment my handsomeness. I like compliments. It’s third on my list of love languages. My first love language is quality time then it’s physical touch. I am more than my looks; I’m intelligent and I enjoy building things, especially new friendships #penpal #penpalsearch #penpalwanted #writeaprisoner  #letter #sendmail #inmate #inmatelove #positivevibes #trendingreels #friends #newfriends #lovebehindbars  #penpal #mwi #prisonbrides #prisonlove #prisonpenpal #usa #loveafterlockup #fyp #viral #inmate #prisonwife #prisonlife

Let This Sink In
So where do I start? The last 5 years have been hard, very hard. I was looking for something to immerse myself in, so that maybe everything would not be so difficult. Maybe, I would finally have something to occupy my time and my mind to make the pain stop. What pain you ask? Let me just tell you. In May of 2017 my husband and I found out that my father had melanoma. He had taken immunotherapy…
