One thing I absolutely respect about Matthew Broderick is that the man does not seem to take himself too seriously at all. After playing such an iconic role as Ferris Bueller I could easily see him becoming conceited. But no, he let the tables turn and played Principal Burr and he allowed himself to be the butt of the joke in his cameo as himself in Only Murders in the Building. That I can respect.

Hi K! I saw this TikTok yesterday (https://www.tiktok.com/t/ZT21XXxV3/) and I kind of just wanted your take on the situation.

I’ve tried to briefly read what I could about the situation between Oscar and Alpine but you might be aware of more? I’m just wondering things like… was it mainly an Oscar decision? Do you think/know what was the catalyst for the move to McLaren was? How might it have affected Oscar when he first started f1 in 2023? Do you think it had an effect on Lando/Oscar getting to know each other early on for maybe the good or bad? I didn’t become an Oscar, landoscar, McLaren fan until 2024 so it’s all about out of reach for me. I would just love your opinion on things!

i'd love to discuss it more though!!! i kind of cover this in my oscar primer but i'm happy to delve into the alpine situation specifically. also i always like pointing to this article from when everything went down because i feel it summarizes the contract stuff pretty well! 

anyway, to begin with—oscar joined the rsa in 2020 because eurocup winners are automatically offered an academy spot, which means alpine never specifically "scouted" him (not that it matters for anything but just some context i guess). this is also when he met mark, who proved to be a fairly important main character in the contractual proceedings.

some background on alpine as a team is that... THEY'RE A JOKE!!! sorry. the problem with alpine actually is that renault has a sizable government stake in it which kind of restricts its vision / effectiveness / seriousness as a formula 1 outfit. honestly the problem with the french ladder itself is that it's WAY centralized in a way few other countries' are, which is why french drivers are kind of all Like That with one another (childhood sponsor trauma/ffsa drama. but that's neither here nor there). anyway in the case of oscar and many other juniors, alpine proved to be such a resounding failure at properly promoting them into actual f1 seats because it treats itself like a frontrunner while managing itself like and having the admin resources of an f4 team... hence the crb's involvement!

the main problem at the time was ceo laurent rossi, who joined alpine in 2021 with its branding overhaul and was like You Know What? Who Needs A TP! EYE can do all that!!!!!!! when he, in fact, could not do all that (ok exaggerating but they were running a "multi-pronged" leadership structure with him + multiple directors which is like... Fine if you HAVE A TEAM PRINCIPAL and then split the technical directors, like mclaren are doing under andrea. but they were just doing anything man. and it was kind of understood that rossi was pulling all the strings). also worth noting that he was the ceo of the alpine sportscar brand overall too and not just the f1 team lol. he would eventually appoint otmar to be the tp, but i will say that like he was 99% running things still and otmar was just his public-facing fall guy handling all of the media scrutiny and acting like the villain in the story. like yes he was the one calling out oscar on netflix and stuff but he had very little power in the grand of scheme of things.

anyway at the time, the director of the alpine academy was mia sharizman, who LOVED oscar lol and gassed him up in comparison to all the other juniors. he was a big part of the early academy overhaul in the first place, which is why they were able to create a generally robust testing program by the time rossi came into place, which i will say helped oscar massively in preparing for his time in f1. but he was already fired by the time crbgate happened sooo... rossi didn't really care about the academy at all, and his narrow-sighted business instincts heavily waylaid its potential and progress, and all of his poor decisions are also basically what directly ousted (THEE) prost from the outfit and turned him on alpine.

sorry this is getting so long but i do feel like you have to go back quite a bit to understand the failings in oscar's time at alpine LOL. anyway the REAL kicker of the story actually begins with esteban ocon: in 2021, rossi offered him a THREE-YEAR CONTRACT EXTENSION?! it was literally a kneejerk "oh we have a french driver who's doing okay this year so let's sign him FOREVER" reaction and it would also unknowingly be the nail in the coffin of his time in f1. like to be clear, mia nurtured visions of buliding a robust renault junior program for years and years, and then they signed esteban and FERNANDO, but laurent (renault puppet) was like hmmm well we've got a french guy so let's make sure we hold onto him forever. hehe :P for the image :3c

so that's basically where the problem lies in 2022. oscar—surprise surprise—wins f2 as a rookie, leaving him with nothing to do that year, since neither esteban nor fernando can be replaced, guanyu gets the only open seat left, and he isn't about to go to indycar to get forgotten, which means his only option is to be alpine's reserve driver and do a lot of testing with them to get the feel of an f1 car. the thing is, though...... someone (i assume mark) also manages to negotiate that oscar be allowed to join mclaren's pool of reserve drivers alongside alpine's, just to give him a maximum number of opportunities during his sabbatical. alpine, being Oh So Magnanimous And Open-hearted, are like ok? whatever. what's the worst that can happen

so at this time fernando had a one-year contract extension for 2022, and would ostensibly be parting ways with the team in 2023 for oscar to take his place. the problem is, though, that alpine are like ermmm... but Fernando is Good. but we can't get rid of esteban >__< so what if we just stick oscar at williams for a few years and then maybe we can give him a seat in like 2025???? which is like. WHO IS GOING TO BE WAITING AROUND FOR AN ALPINE SEAT!!! YOU AREN'T PRE-FLOPPAGE MERCEDES. you aren't even POST-FLOPPAGE mercedes. My God. 

basically alpine really wanted to have their cake and eat it too. they were like, well fernando is good NOW but he's also kind of old, so let's give him a 1+1 and kind of hold him on a tight leash in case his performance suddenly falls of a cliff. of course, because laurent has an ego the size of france, he was like surely fernando will be begging to stay with us because who else will have him?! not like the man is a world champion who has standards.

but then seb retired and fernando saw the opportunity and immediately jumped ship to aston. LOL.

back to oscar for a moment: basically he had a contract as a 2022 reserve driver and they were working on writing a contract for his potential 2023 seat, which at the time was presumably going to be the williams seat (replacing goatifi). the catalyst for oscar, or really mostly mark who handled all of this, was that they were constantly ghosting him and missing deadlines and basically dicking him around. they had this one director of legal affairs who was essentially alpine's ENTIRE LEGAL DEPARTMENT and was under huge pressure from both sides as she tried to handle the situation with 0 support or documents being given to her from alpine. here's the bit from the article that explains exactly why oscar never had an actual seat in place, and why the crb unanimously ruled in oscar's favor:

This reserve deal was lodged with the CRB on March 14th, but did not feature any extension beyond December 31st for a potential race seat with Alpine. Piastri received this contract through his lawyers on March 15th, with Mercer stating that this was "an emergency measure" with the season starting just four days later, and no reserve driver agreement in place. Without a contract in place, Piastri could not be granted a super licence for his reserve position, which Mercer was aware of. With no other option, she was forced into treating the Terms Sheet of November 2021 as a binding contract, adding the words "legally binding Heads of Terms" to the document.

the actual catalyst came in may 2022, when alpine finally proposed (as i previously mentioned) the plan to be at williams for 2 years until he could join them in 2025. to be clear, again, there was never A williams contract, just a proposal/plan to get him one. mark was basically like well Fuck That?! so he immediately got into conversation with mclaren/seidl/whoever, and they signed a driving agreement for oscar with mclaren, with the understanding that he'd be a reserve driver but had a clause to be promoted if they bought out ricciardo's contract. yay! this is what the crb upheld as "valid and binding" in comparison to alpine's farce of a document. 

finally back to fernando, the reason this all went to the crb in the first place is that alpine NEVER intended to immediately promote oscar and were simply blindsided by seb's retirement and fernando's subsequent "betrayal." because they suddenly had a seat open, they were quick to scramble together an announcement for oscar's seat, without any consideration for the fact that he might have been shopping around for a better offer after being held in limbo by them for so long. like not only did they want to ship him off to williams—who weren't even particularly receptive to the idea of being an incubator for other teams' academies anymore—they'd already stuck him in the reserve role for all of 2022!!! after winning f3 and f2 as a rookie back-to-back! and they would only ever continue to not learn with the rest of their drivers!!! (e.g. doohan... not that doohan is anywhere near the same level of fumble/expected ceiling as oscar but still. so embarrassing to see their juniors just walking around the paddock being sky/f1 media puppets)

sorry this is SO LONG. 

your other questions. re: how it effected oscar coming into 2023, i do think that overall, having so much testing experience with an f1 car and being around an f1 outfit was fairly helpful, although i wouldn't overstate the impact his testing had on him either—he was running with a different team and using a car from different regs. i don't think it necessarily negatively impacted him, though; sure, people entertained the narrative that he had a TON of pressure on him from taking ricciardo's seat, but i honestly don't feel that mclaren ever created that kind of environment for him, and i think his expectations as a rookie were laid out pretty clearly from the get-go. oscar was probably just eager to prove himself, focus on driving, and move on from the drama of alpine.

i'd also say that his early relationship with lando was probably similar LOL :') i don't think lando really had any particular thoughts on the situation or about oscar himself other than like "well good riddance for you mate" and then they probably just forgot about it. there was a lot of misinformation at the time about oscar's situation with alpine, but he strikes me as a very "well /i/ know the truth so who cares" kind of guy.

Daybreak review

I finished watching Daybreak yesterday. It's a Netflix show. Only had one season before it was canceled. Amazing show. This review has no major spoilers, despite me wanting so badly to be specific about what I loved about it. I don't want to spoil anything just in case anyone wants to watch it.

It's a post-apocalyptic comedy show. It's about a teenage boy named Josh who is searching for his girlfriend, Sam, after the end of the world. The adults had turned into zombies, and teenage street gangs rule the city.

Matthew Broderick is in it. I loved him in Ferris Bueller's Day Off. It was nice to see him here. He was hilarious in this show. He plays Principal Burr, the funniest character in Daybreak.

The main characters are Josh, Angelica, and Wesley. The fourth one is a guy named Eli. He's in the white shirt in the picture I posted. Josh in red. Wesley is the Black boy. Angelica is the girl.

Josh wants to find his girlfriend. Wesley is a ronin-obsessed guy who wants to redeem himself. Angelica is a mischievous little girl. Eli is an annoying guy who lives in the mall Josh, Wesley, and Angelica end up staying at. There's another character too, an adult named Ms. Crumble. Her bond with Angelica is the best thing about this show. It was nice seeing them grow closer over the course of the show. There are other great bonds in Daybreak too.

Anyway.

The first two episodes were somewhat lame. I remember being a bit bored while watching them. Episode three was better. I started to (slightly) enjoy the show then. Episode three was when the characters started to bond with each other and stop being such selfish jerks. That's definitely what made me begin liking the show. The characters caring about each other.

Anyway, episode four was amazing. There was a big heroic moment. Funny moments too, like when two certain characters were fighting. One of them got something hot thrown into eyes, and he casually shouted something like "Ow. My eyes. That really hurt." It was hilarious because in real life, someone would be screaming in agony or yelling out a bunch of curse words if their eyes were in that much pain. Earlier in the episode, the same character casually said hi to him after unmasking himself. It was supposed to be a big revealing moment, but this character's casualness made the scene so hilarious.

Episode four really shows some great character depth, too. That's when the characters really start getting interesting. In this episode, the heroes in this show start to become fun to watch, and so do the villains.

After episode four, each episode is amazing and well-written. This show was so unpredictable, but in a good way that makes sense. You never knew what would happen, unless you've been paying attention or are a smart person. Like, one character was going to use maggots to deal with another one's infected wound. I knew what the maggots were going to do before the show even revealed it.

Every episode is unique in some way and you never know what's going to go down. And they use certain situations for humor in interesting ways. Like when some characters were temporarily deaf in the last episode. There was a drawn-out scene in the mall, and it was pretty funny how it went.

Sometimes big text on the screen is used as dialogue, like when Turbo "speaks". I thought that was pretty cool.

The foreshadowing is great. I never saw foreshadowing used so well before watching this show. And it's got cool references to other scenes. Like, one character would mention something, and then the next episode would show it happening. The show does this with minor stuff, too. For example, Sam mentions learning something from her teacher, Ms. Crumble. The episode after that has a flashback showing Sam learning that piece of info. I loved that.

The music is great. There are plenty of heartwarming, sweet moments. There are hilarious ones, too. A lot of them. But the best thing about Daybreak is the characterization. The characters in this show are amazing, interesting, and have depth. Wonderful character development, too. Great dialogue. And the flashbacks are all necessary. They matter to the show's present timeline, and the flashbacks were put to good use.

There are some cool bonds in this show, with the best one being the one between Angelica and Ms. Crumble.

I had a theory on who Baron Triumph was while watching the show, and the character I believed was him actually turned out to be him. It was so satisfying. That character was one of the best things about this show, too.

Also, Daybreak is not a zombie show. There are zombies in it, but they don't feature too much. The show is mainly about the teenage gangs.

I don't like fourth wall breaking, so I hate that this show has a lot of it. And if this wasn't a comedy, I probably would've loved it more. Because I love serious fiction. I don't like wacky comedies all that much. Regardless, Daybreak is an amazing comedy show with heart. Like that Japanese film Love Exposure. My favorite movie. Daybreak is probably the best comedy TV show I've watched, actually. The characters and the writing make this show so wonderful.

I recommend people watch this show.

Interesting characters. Excellent character development. Unpredictability. Great music. Heartwarming scenes. Hilarious humor. Good writing in general. Smart characters. Fantastic foreshadowing.

I'm rating Daybreak four out of five stars.

Princess Luna slitted her eyes and laid her ears back as she asked in a tone too mild to be safe for any that her anger was directed to, “Chest lineament and a day off at half pay for a colt with pneumonia? Rent up twenty bits put you at a hardship? Impre Sario was that rude to you both?”

Both Foamy and Clarice nodded. “That's right, Your Highness.”

Suddenly Celestia broke out in a chuckle as she commented, “That explains why he hasn't put on any ballets except The Singing Swan, The Dance of the Sweet Peach Breezy and the Awakening of the Dragon! They are all not only Public Domain, they are widely used as recital pieces for ballet schools! Every dancer knows them!”

Luna, however, was boring in on a different issue entirely! “Foamy, I got your request and gave Impre a benefice for two weeks off at full pay and for up to ten thousand gold in horsepital expenses with an extention if needed. Both were cashed at EQNB with signatures that matched the sample cards.

“Clarice, I have been paying top scale by benefice, which, like Foamy's were all signed to match the sample cards, as required when cashing Royal Benefices.”

Foamy snorted, “Afraid not, Your Highness. Impre always gave us pay packets with coins. None of the troupe, stage hands, set builders or painters, ever saw a benefice. Frankly, we don't trust EQNB at all. We do all of our banking here at Ponyville Trust and Loan. With Grumpy Goat on the Board of Directors, we know that it is dead honest!”

Princess Twilight snickered, “Dead Honest about perfectly describes Grumpeter! Good choice for banking too! All of the Principality banking is done there at PTL. PTL's got over ten times more in liquid assets than EQNB. That's why this Principality is so prosperous.”

Kin added to the mix a bit by offering, “What Foamy and Clarice just told you guys is spot on.”

Foamy and Clarice were not to be deterred from their initial goal, “Now that that's covered, about these dances! Kin, if you can do to us what you did to them,” she pointed at AJ, Rarity and Pinkie, “it would really help us to score these dances. We want to learn to choreograph them properly.

“We really like Princess Twilight's suggestion. It will let us add these dynamite dances to the show without having to work up a new main stage dance and sets. We only need to hang backrop and wings curtains that I know that we already have.”

Pinkie, to call attention, made a metalic BURR by doing a bust shimmy in her coin decorated dancing bra, and stated flatly, “We need Red and Sweet Lawn in on this. I'll bet that they could do backdrops that will really make the dancers stand out! Candy might have some good ideas too! You guys have seen her genius at costume design! I'd lay money on her fixing up something in these dances that would work for pegassi!”

That was when Twilight's mirror sounded a warbling tone!

“What is it, Captain Ranbow Dash?”

“We have some lard butt who claims to be from Canterlot Castle and in charge of the gala! He set off alarms trying to open the locked stage doors! While we were speaking to friends recently, I had occasion to look at Foamy's signature card at EQNB. It is a right handed signature. The problem is simple. Foamy is LEFT handed. The Royal Benefice that was cashed for her sick foal Barrel Racer's horsepitalization matched the card. She did not get the money. Luna has verified that by Bridge of Dream.

“If you do not cooperate in your arrest, our Joint Order is for you to be slain where you stand. All clear? No need to like it. Just cooperate or die.”

Foamy, overhearing the conversation was dropjawed! “Kill Impe! I know that he's a jerk, but death?”

Luna smiled but there appeared to be literal fire in her eyes! “Foamy, dear, what he did to you was only the tiniest tip of a very big iceberg. We won't know until the Royal Intelligence Service report is done, but it appears that he was hijacking around a half to two thirds of the ENTIRE Royal Ballet budget. There may be more besides. He did many fundraising events.”

Princeton Middle School principal supportive of request

A gender-neutral locker room for LGBTQ+ (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer) students may be in the works at the Princeton Middle School.

Two eighth grade students – Indie and Jules – rolled out their request for a gender-neutral locker room with five bathroom stalls and five showers before the Princeton Public Schools Board of Education meeting Feb. 21.

“Transgender and non-binary teens face a greater risk of sexual assault in schools that prevent them from using bathrooms or locker rooms consistent with their gender identity,” Indie said.

Jules, who participated in the presentation, said Princeton Middle School students who were interviewed anonymously favored a gender-neutral locker room. Students’ comments were included in the presentation.

One of the anonymous students said the middle school prides itself on being accepting and inclusive of all types of students, but many students do not feel comfortable changing in the two gender-specific locker rooms at the school.

“I think that (a gender-neutral locker room) would be an important step in the right direction to make students feel more comfortable at Princeton Middle School,” the anonymous student said.

“I personally identify as genderqueer and I know this would make me feel more comfortable being in this school. It would make me feel more welcome here as a student,” the anonymous interviewee said.

When another unnamed student was asked about the benefits of a gender-neutral locker room, the student replied that all students should have the same facilities and the right to take a shower.

The gender-neutral bathrooms, which is where many gender-nonconforming people change, do not have a shower, the anonymous student said.

“There is a chance that when you go to change (in the gender-neutral bathroom), someone will be using the bathroom. It is especially uncomfortable if you are wet and drippy and cold and in your bathing suit,” the student said.

Indie suggested converting the women’s team room into a gender-neutral locker room.

“The plan would be to have five bathroom stalls and five showers,” Indie said. “It might be possible for the school district to apply for a grant to make the locker room handicapped accessible.”

School board president Dafna Kendal praised the students for their presentation. When she asked about the reaction from Princeton Middle School Principal Jason Burr, guidance counselor Sharon DiSebastian said Burr was supportive of the request.

School board members Betsy Baglio, Deborah Bronfeld and Jean Durbin thanked the students for bringing the issue to the school board’s attention.

“I appreciate your advocacy. You are solution-oriented. You are already thinking about grants. This is a great first step,” Baglio said.

Bronfeld said she is excited for the school board to take the next step.

Kendal said the proposal should be sent to the school board’s Operations Committee, which is co-chaired by school board members Brian McDonald and Susan Kanter.

“This is something the school board supports. It’s awkward enough to be in middle school in a bathing suit, and even worse if you are standing in the hallway (waiting to get into a gender-neutral bathroom),” Kendal said.

Kanter said the request for a gender-neutral locker room would be added to the Operations Committee’s agenda.

“We are looking forward to getting back to you. We might have a few further questions. We appreciate you coming to us,” Kanter said.

Who is the worst founding father? Round 2: Robert Livingston vs George Mason

Robert Robert Livingston (November 27, 1746 (Old Style November 16) – February 26, 1813) was an American lawyer, politician, and diplomat from New York, as well as a Founding Father of the United States. He was known as "The Chancellor" after the high New York state legal office he held for 25 years. He was a member of the Committee of Five that drafted the Declaration of Independence, along with Thomas Jefferson, Benjamin Franklin, John Adams, and Roger Sherman. Livingston administered the oath of office to George Washington when he assumed the presidency April 30, 1789. Livingston was also elected as a member of the American Philosophical Society in 1801.

Livingston, a member of a large and prominent family, was known for continually quarreling with his relatives.

In 1789, Livingston joined the Jeffersonian Republicans (later known as the Democratic-Republicans), forming an uneasy alliance with his previous rival George Clinton and Aaron Burr, then a political newcomer. Livingston opposed the Jay Treaty and other initiatives of the Federalist Party, founded and led by his former colleagues Alexander Hamilton and John Jay. He ran for governor of New York as a Democratic-Republican, unsuccessfully challenging incumbent governor John Jay in the 1798 election.

George Mason (December 11, 1725 [O.S. November 30, 1725] – October 7, 1792) was an American planter, politician, Founding Father, and delegate to the U.S. Constitutional Convention of 1787, one of three delegates present who refused to sign the Constitution. His writings, including substantial portions of the Fairfax Resolves of 1774, the Virginia Declaration of Rights of 1776, and his Objections to this Constitution of Government (1787) opposing ratification, have exercised a significant influence on American political thought and events. The Virginia Declaration of Rights, which Mason principally authored, served as a basis for the United States Bill of Rights, of which he has been deemed a father.

Mason prepared the first draft of the Virginia Declaration of Rights in 1776, and his words formed much of the text adopted by the final Revolutionary Virginia Convention. He also wrote a constitution for the state; Thomas Jefferson and others sought to have the convention adopt their ideas, but they found that Mason's version could not be stopped. During the American Revolutionary War, Mason was a member of the powerful House of Delegates of the Virginia General Assembly, but to the irritation of Washington and others, he refused to serve in the Continental Congress in Philadelphia, citing health and family commitments.

Mason routinely spoke out against slavery, even before America's independence. In 1773, he wrote that slavery was "that slow Poison, which is daily contaminating the Minds & Morals of our People. Every Gentlemen here is born a petty Tyrant." In 1774, he advocated ending the international slave trade.

However, Mason owned many slaves. In Fairfax County, only George Washington owned more, and Mason is not known to have freed any, even in his March 1773 will ultimately transcribed into the Fairfax County probate records in October 1792 (the original was then lost).

He doesn't mind it as much as he pretends to— Philip is a sweet boy, after all, and it gives Aaron the excuse he needs to see his former friend despite bridges being burned to a crisp. But when Aaron get's a phone call one stormy night, everything changes.

Day 30: Recovery + Hospital Bed + "What Have I Done?" — Hamilton · Jamilton—  After an attempt brought on by something Thomas said, he's left to pick up the pieces of a broken Hamilton.

Epilogue: The Sharpener.

The Prophet uses the term "and it came to pass" multiple times in the Chapters of the Book of Mormon to the point of monotony.

This was not for lack of words or terminology. The Mishnah "and it came to pass" has a Number of 584, החד‎ ‎ ‎, "a sharpener" which means each bit that is preceded by "and it came to pass" is like a gear that turns but cannot be turned the other way. There is no way to sin and repent and go forward, to the Atonement, which in this case at the sharpest means as the Prophet said:

In the Book of Mormon, 2 Nephi 1:5,7 states that the promised land will be a land of liberty and not a land of oppression if the inhabitants serve the Lord according to his commandments. 

We are not, apparently whet enough for that yet. Maybe someday soon. But we could start by rehearsing the principals and the laws we would like to say we believe in wholeheartedly enough to practice them.

So it came to pass means we Americans, according to the Prophet do eventually solidify and real human beings and practice as the President preached.

About passing, which is a process of whetting and cutting, the etymology states:

"The root שנן (shanan) speaks of repetition or the creation of distance between elements, often preceded by a breaking apart, and followed by a removal or even storage.

Verb שנן (shanan) means to sharpen, and sharpening is achieved by removing material by repeatedly stroking a blade against a whetstone. This verb is also used in the sense of sharpening a mind by repeating the same exercise. Noun שן (shen) means tooth. Noun שנינה (shenina) denotes a "sharp" word; a taunt.

Verb שנה (shana) means to change or create a difference — of one's mind, or one's clothes, and this mostly through repetition. Noun שנה (shana) means year.

Perhaps formally separate but obviously related, or else the very same verb שנה (shana) means to repeat or reoccur. Noun שנים (shenayim) or שתים (shetayim) is the common word for two or a pair. Adjective שני (sheni) or שנית (shenit) means second and noun משנה (misneh) means second, double, or copy. Noun שנאן (shin'an) is used as a superlative in figures of speech (i.e. expressions like double-down, super-double-good).

Noun שני (shani) denotes the color purple. This noun might formally derive from a third wholly separate verb of unclear meaning but obviously reminds of the many times a garment has to be dipped in dye to have its color changed.

Verb ישן (yashen) means to sleep, which seems to indicate that the ancients related one's daily activities to a forward stroke of one's mental blade against the whetstone of life, whereas sleep counted as the trailing stroke backward and removal of the burr. Adjective ישן (yashen) means sleeping or sleepy, and is obviously similar to its sibling noun ישן (yashen), which means old. Nouns שנה (shena), שנא (shena') and שנת (shenat) mean sleep.

Verb שנא (sane') is commonly translated with to hate but actually lacks the angry emotion that our English word conveys. It rather means to reject, create distance from and send away. Adjective שניא (sani') means hated (i.e. the hated wife), and noun שנאה (sin'a) means a hating or hatred, which comes down to a separating or a sending away."

We need to send the hatred away. Pray, send the hate away, and away may it stay.

Carmen Arlene Balthrop-Delaney (May 14, 1948 - September 5, 2021) soprano and arts advocate, was born in DC to John W. Balthrop, who was employed by the Department of Justice in the Printing Office, and Clementine E. Jordan Balthrop, a homemaker. She was the youngest and only girl of four children.

She heard the legendary opera singer Leontyne Price on the radio, sparking her interest in classical music. She graduated from the University of Maryland, College Park, and received a BSM in voice performance. She earned an MSM in Voice Performance from The Benjamin T. Rome School of Music at the Catholic University of America.

She won first prize in the New York Metropolitan Opera’s National Council Auditions, one of the most prestigious competitions in opera. She played the title role in Scott Joplin’s opera Treemonisha with the Houston Grand Opera. Her Metropolitan Opera debut came in 1977 in Mozart’s opera Die Zauberflöte as Pamina. She advocated for the arts when she testified before a Senate Appropriations subcommittee supporting President Jimmy Carter’s proposed budget for the National Endowment for the Arts. She left the hearing room with loud applause as a 15‐minute recess was called for her to sing to members of Congress and congressional staffers in the hall of the Capitol.

She began teaching applied voice at the University of Maryland School of Music. She taught movement for singers, opera repertory, and an advanced seminar in vocal pedagogy. She married Dorceal Duckens (1985). She married Patrick Delaney. She had two daughters.

She was inducted into the University of Maryland’s Hall of Fame. She was the coordinator of the voice and opera division of the School of Music at that institution.
