RISE OF RED: A TALE OF HEADS AND HEARTS
(Descendants: Rise of Red Fanfiction/Re-imagining)
Tumblr media
Chapter 7
Soon both girls were dressed and they waited around till Faye came knocking. "Oh wow, you girls look great," she said, smiling at them. "Thank you," Chloe said cordially. She was dressed in an icy blue mini dress over transparent leggings and her sparkly boots. She'd left her hair to tumble down her shoulders and wore lip gloss from a tube she'd tucked into her pocket from earlier. Red was dressed much simpler in a red tank top and black cargo pants, her hair pulled back into a ponytail and her new sunglasses balanced on her nose. "Dinner time round here is a big deal," Faye explained as they left the room and started walking towards the elevators. "Before it used to be simple and casual, but then some of the royals started dressing as if it was a gala. Now we have an unofficial dress code." "Sounds stupid," Red commented, stuffing her hands into her trousers pockets. "No it doesn't. Dressing up is fun," Chloe argued. "Would you rather be in a T-shirt and jeans?" "Yeah, probably. Then I wouldn't be worried about getting food on it while I eat." Chloe scoffed. "Who ever heard of a Princess without table manners." "A Princess?" Faye looked at Red curiosly. "She meant that metaphorically." They were on the ground floor now, about to walk out the door. There were a bunch of girls, walking round, talking and giggling, and outside there were even more. Chloe kept her eyes peeled for her mum, looking intently at the Jewel building. The girls coming out of Jewel were dressed in dresses similar to her own, stylish and sparkly. Some even wore heels and fancy jewelry, with fluffed up hair and light touches of makeup. The girls from Fairy Dust were still very put together but not as glitzy, and the Cauldron girls seemed to go for drama and intrigue with their outfits rather than just looking pretty. They followed Faye and joined what seemed to be a sea of people walking towards the dining hall. The boys were coming from their dorms and added to the crowd. Red looked at them through her glasses. Which one of these boys could be her father?
Would she recognise him by any chance? Maybe she had his hair or his skin tone or the shape of his nose? Soon they were inside the dining hall, which was huge, the size of a whole ballroom, with round tables and chairs arranged restaurant style and long buffet tables at the far end holding platters of food for the students to dish out from.
The hall was gradually filling up and there was already a line at the buffet tables. The noise of hundreds of students gathered together was deafening. "Ooh, I see them," Faye said, her voice raised slightly. She walked determinedly, eyes fixed on a particular table as the girls trailed behind her. On getting to the table, both Chloe and Red choked on air. "Hey guys," Faye greeted the two girls seated at the table already. "These are my new friends Scarlett and Cate. Meet Ella and Iracebeth, you two." She directed the last sentence to Red and Chloe, who were both trying to get over themselves and the fact that their mothers were sitting right in front of them. "Hi, I'm Ella," the first girl said, with a gorgeous smile. Her brown skin glowed and her soft honey blonde curls framed her pretty face perfectly. "I'm Iracebeth...but just call me Bridget," the other girl said. Her skin was tanned and she had a scattering of freckles across her nose and cheeks, which went well with her bright, blood-red waves of hair that flowed down her back. Just like Red, she had the eyes of the Wonderlandian Royal family; a deep reddish-brown, but hers were more vivid in colour, the redness of her irises clear and vibrant, making Mirana's eyes seem almost dead and cold in comparison.
“Hi,” Red said, shocked at the friendly, inviting tone of her mother’s voice.
“Care for a cookie?” Iracebeth offered, pushing forward a container filled with prettily decorated cookies. “I made them myself; a Wonderlandian recipe.”
“Glitter cookies.” Red kicked herself for blurting that out, but she was beside herself with surprise when she noticed the unique crust and patterns in the decoration.
The Queen of Hearts hated glitter cookies. So much so that she had banned them from the kingdom entirely. Whenever Red was craving one, she either had to do whatever crazy thing the Cheshire Cat asked for as an incentive, or sneak into the kitchen in the dead of night and make a batch in the dark- which never turned out well.
Iracebeth’s eyes widened, as did her smile. “How did you know? Are you from Wonderland?”
“Uh, no. But I have an…um..aunt that’s half Wonderlandian. She makes them for us all the time.”
“That’s amazing!”
“You know, Iracebeth here is a Princess of Wonderland,” Faye said, taking a cookie.
“That’s hardly important, though,” Iracebeth countered, rolling her eyes playfully.
She reached into the container and pulled out a cookie, placing it in Red’s hand. “Here. Welcome to MA. It’s nice to have another red-head around.” "H-hi Ella," Chloe said, attempting to control the emotions welling up in her. Unlike her dad, who had albums full of memories of a pleasant childhood, her mum didn't even have a single picture from when she was younger, aside from the one her parents took together on their first date at a ball.
“Hello,” Ella said, her soft voice coated with a distinct French accent. “I love your hair. So pretty.”
I got it from you, Chloe wanted to say, but instead she said. “Thank you so much. Yours is pretty too, it’s so shiny.”
“And it smells like a freshly candied apple,” Iracebeth commented, taking a sip of water.
“What have I told you about smelling my hair?”
Iracebeth batted her lashes with a cheeky smile. “Well you can’t blame me, candied apples are my favourite.”
Red watched both girls as they bantered back and forth with their inside joke. Now she finally had an explanation as to why her mother had candy apples banned in Wonderland.
Chloe did too, realizing that her mother hadn’t exaggerated about her friendship with the Queen of Hearts.
“Don’t mind these two,” Faye cut in. “They’ve been attached at the hip since the very first day.”
“And ironically, our sisters have been too,” Iracebeth added.
“Sisters?” Red’s interest was piqued.
“Yeah; my sister and Ella’s twin step-sisters are best friends too.”
“That’s…interesting,” Chloe said.
“ À pic (Right on cue),” Ella muttered.
They all followed her line of vision, which ended on three girls heading towards the back of the dining hall.
Chloe tried not to let any shock show on her features as she caught sight of the younger versions of her step-aunts. Anastasia wore a frilly purple dress and her auburn hair fell down her shoulders in distressed ringlet curls. Drizella was in a green top and matching mini skirt, her chocolate coloured hair cut in a sleek bob.
In their middle stood Mirana, whose blood-red lipstick contrasted with her milky white skin giving her an even more striking look. She was also all dressed up, in a cream halter top and checkered pants in red and white.
They attracted lots of stares as they walked towards their table, and they seemed to revel in them, noses up in the air.
“Are you guys…um…close?” Chloe eventually asked, hoping her voice wouldn’t give away the fact that she already knew the answer to the question.
Ella and Iracebeth shared a looked and laughed like they knew something the others didn’t. But Chloe could see the pain that had seeped into her mother’s features.
“It’s…complicated,” Iracebeth said, and Red couldn’t help but notice the slight sadness in her voice, something she’d never heard before.
“Come on girls, let’s grab something from the buffet tables before it’s all gone,” Faye said.
But before they could get up numerous shrieks and screams broke out all over the dining hall.
“What’s happening?” Red asked, suddenly on alert.
The screams got louder with each passing second and there were several students on their feet as well.
“They must be back,” Iracebeth said, sinking a fork down into her plate.
“Who?” Chloe craned her neck, only to see a group of boys walking in, all wearing what looked like Knight’s armour, holding their helmets under their arms.
“The Knight Ball team. They travelled for an away match and they just got back,” Faye explained. “It’s a big deal.”
“They’re acting like they just slayed a Jabberwocky or something,” Red muttered.
“You know what those are?”
“Uh…my aunt told me,” Red avoided Iracebeth’s look, turning to face the front of the dining hall where the team were still receiving a warm welcome.
“That one over there,” Faye pointed at a tall, handsome boy with golden-brown hair who had a red band across the sleeve of his armour. “That’s King Arthur.”
“Like…sword in the stone, Excalibur Arthur?” Chloe asked, eyes widening.
Faye nodded. “Merlin wanted him to attend school for a few years before officially ascending the throne as King. He’s the captain of the team.”
“Oh, wow.”
“My cousin’s on the team too,” Faye said, beaming with pride. “Oh look, here he comes now.”
Sure enough, a long-legged boy with wavy, jet-black hair was jogging up to their table, a wide, flawless smile on his face.
Red turned back, only to see Iracebeth’s face flushing with colour.
“Hey, cuz. Hey, Ella,” the boy said once he got to their table, his voice supriingly deep. “Whew…let me catch my breath for a sec.”
He bent over, clutching his helmet before using one hand to lift his mop of hair, staring straight ahead of him with a smirk. “Hey, Ira-Bridget,” he said.
Alarm bells rang in Red’s head as her mother’s lip twitched with a smile she was obviously trying to hide. “Hey, Thornbush.”
“Boy, I love it when you distort my name, Red,” he said, standing upright and wiping sweat off his forehead, his eyes still fixed on Iracebeth.
Red’s head was swimming, thoughts popping out at a speed faster than she could reason them out.
“Hey, ball boy, meet Scarlett and Cate, new students. Girls, meet my cousin, Thorne.”
Suddenly the rushing wave of thoughts in Red’s head stopped and her heart skipped almost a few beats too many.
“Charmed, ladies,” Thorne said, taking turns to shake both their hands. “Welcome to our school.”
“Thanks,” Chloe said, returning his smile. “Good game?”
“Oh yeah, we crushed them as usual.” He looked directly at Iracebeth again. “Wish you could’ve seen it.”
Iracebeth tilted her head and opened her mouth to reply him, but before she could do that, she noticed a slim pair of pale fingers wrapped around Thorne’s armour-covered waist from behind.
“Im so proud of you, Thorney,” Mirana said in a purr-like tone, revealing herself from where she was standing behind him.
“Oh, thanks, Mirana,” he said politely, gently removing her hands from his waist.
Mirana gripped onto his hands with her own, giggling under her breath and tossing her perfectly coiffed electric white hair over her shoulder.
“You know, Arthur, Philip and Florian are all at our table. Why don’t you join us?”
“Nah, I think I’m just gonna grab a plate to-go and head up to my room.”
“Okay, well, there might be a party happening later behind Fairy Dust. You know you’re invited.”
“Yeah, thanks. But I’m really, really tired. I just came to say hi to my cousin and friends.”
“I see.” Mirana cast a side glance at the girls, offering them a general tight-lipped smile before facing Thorne again, dropping his hands from hers so she could move in closer to him. “Well, you should get some rest. And if you feel better in a few hours, you know where to find me.”
She stood on her tip-toes, circled her arms round his neck and planted a kiss on his cheek in one fluid motion before letting him go and walking away with a hair toss.
Thorne attempted to wipe off the print of Mirana’s kiss from his cheek but her lipstick refused to budge, leaving  very obvious proof of her action.
“Great,” he muttered to himself, rolling his eyes.
He looked sideways, only to see Iracebeth poking holes in the meat on her plate.
He was at her side before he could stop himself crouching down beside her.
“I didn’t know she was gonna do all that,” he started saying, his voice low.
“It’s no problem, Thorne. You’re free to do what you want,” she replied at the same volume.
Red watched them as they conversed, her breathing better regulated than it was before.
Her mum and…..her dad.
For the first time in all her life she had a clear image of who her father was.
Granted, she had never really given much thought to the concept of having a father when she was younger. It was just her, her mum, the Hatter and Maddox, and so she assumed it took just one person to make a child, until she noticed all the complete families in the kingdom and asked Maddox about it.
She had tried several times to imagine what he would have looked like or sounded like, but after a while, she abandoned the whole idea.
And now, here he was with her mother.
“But-“ Thorne argued.
“-It’s fine,” Iracebeth said. “Get something to eat and go rest. You’ve had a long day. We’ll talk another time, okay?”
Thorne got up as she sipped from her glass of water.
“I’ll leave you guys to enjoy your dinner now. I’m in dire need of some chicken and a shower. Goodnight.”
The girls chorused their goodbyes as he left their table.
“So, is Thorne your cousin from your mum or dad’s side?” Chloe asked Faye after they’d gotten their food and were seated back at the table again.
“Neither,” Faye said, using a knife and cutting up her food into bite-sized chunks.
“Oh?”
“His mother abandoned him in the forest, and Nanny, the head of my fairy school, adopted him. He basically grew up in the school around us, and when we did the exchange program, he followed Maleficent and I here.”
Chloe stopped chewing. “Maleficent is in this school too?” she asked, covering her mouth as she talked over the food in it.
Red scoffed. “Now look who’s got table manners.”
“Yes, Maleficent attends this school. You must’ve heard of the whole christening incident with Princess Aurora.”
“Yeah, I… heard of that.”
“No need to be worried,” Ella said. “She barely attends classes anyway; always off with that boyfriend of hers, Aidoneus…or is it Hades?. I don’t know, but I heard he’s Greek.”
“Not just Greek,” Iracebeth added. “A Greek god. And not just that he’s attractive. He’s an actual deity.”
“Like I said, Merlin accepts everyone.”
Red raised her water glass to her lips and looked round the dining hall in the process, catching sight of Mirana whispering rapidly to Ella’s step-sisters, an angry look on her face.
That couldn’t be good.
She kept her eyes on them, frowning when they all stood up and starting making their way across to the table.
Ella noticed them too, the colour draining from her face and her jaw working as she ground her teeth.
“Ella!” Drizella called sharply once she was close enough, swishing her bob.
Ella didn’t reply, gripping the fork in her hand till her knuckles went pale.
“Ella!” Anastasia added, her voice shrill, making other students around them stop and stare.
“Or maybe we should call you Cinder-ella,” Drizella taunted.
This made Ella stand and walk up to them.
She lifted her head and answered gently. “Yes?”
“It seems all the dust you sweep must’ve clogged up your ears, huh, peasant?”
“Hey, it’s against school rules to use those sort of words on other students,” Faye spoke up, giving Anastasia a hard glare.
The girl rolled her hazel eyes. “And who’s gonna tell the wizard?”
“Maybe I will-“
“-and I’ll tell him everything I know about you and that voodoo boy,” Mirana cut in. “Back off, Faye!”
“It’s okay, Faye,” Ella said, giving her a small, grateful smile before turning back to her step-sisters. “What do you guys want?”
“The outfits we’re wearing for tonight’s party aren’t completely perfect yet. You need to go steam them,” Anastasia said, observing her nails.
“In fact, I think they got a little dirty when we were bringing them out. Have them washed, dried and then steam them,” Drizella added.
“B-but the laundry rooms close in…” she looked at a clock on the wall. “15 minutes!”
“Well, you better hurry up. We need those clothes for tonight. You wouldn’t want us to inform mother, would you?”
Ella gulped. Her step-mother gave her a clear warning each time they left home to come to school ; one word of complaint and she’d return to the house to spend her whole life as a maid for the three of them, locked up in the attic.
“I’ll get right on it,” she replied demurely, eyes downcast.
“Good. You’ll find the clothes on our beds.”
The twins looked triumphant as Ella picked up her purse and walked away, leaving the dining hall .
Mirana also had a smug look on her face as she went round to meet her sister.
She bent slowly and whispered directly in her ears. “I thought I told you already; if you get in the way of Thorne and I, your little friend gets it. And if you so much as think about helping her, I’ll personally send a letter to Lady Tremaine.”
With a smile, she stood upright and flipped her hair.
“Enjoy your meal, ladies,” she quipped, walking away.
None of the other girls heard what Mirana said to her sister, but the general mood of the table was dampened.
“I, uh, I think I’m full,” Iracebeth said, pushing her chair away from the table. “Must’ve been the cookies.”
She stood up and gathered her things.
“It was amazing meeting you two,” she said, smiling sweetly at Red and Chloe. “I’ll see you all tomorrow. Good night.”
Red and Chloe shared a look as she walked away.
“I’m going to get some more sauce,” Faye said, getting up and leaving as well.
“There’s something going on between my mum and her sister, and it’s not good,” Red said immediately Faye was out of earshot.
“So, you think she’s the one behind the prank?”
“I can’t say just yet. I mean, it could just be a regular sister quarrel, y’know? Not exactly worth scarring a girl so bad she becomes a tyrant.”
“Yeah, you’re right. We’ll observe their dynamic and get more information tomorrow.”
Red nodded, pursing her lips.
Tomorrow, the real work began.

OF THOSE CHESHIRE PROMPTIES
12: When the remarkable turns bizarre, reason turns rancid.
“The princess has returned!”
At first Lina had been excited when the call went out. Things in the Helio Imperium had been on a decline in Shabarra's distraction. Whatever was on his mind, surely having his niece around to step in as heir would bring back a level of stability to the place.
Mirana was indeed a remarkable woman – not a girl as she had believed when Shabarra spoke of his poor niece lost in a horrific mutiny. Lina hadn't seen the initial suspicion in the princess' eyes, no she had mistaken it for a trouble plaguing her mind. Why else would someone not be standing in awe of the very Slayer that saved the city from encroaching armies?
The princess' audiences with her uncle left a bitter taste in her mouth. Mirana blamed him openly for the deaths of her parents which he waved off with sympathy.
“Oh my poor dear,” he said. “It was so chaotic, you don't remember how I sounded the alarm?”
Mirana simply spat at his feet and stormed off. Lina had tried to weigh in her thoughts, but the princess merely barged past, hissing to keep away from her.
Every encounter between them was met with a hostility that Lina – in her ever fervent efforts to appear human – quickly learned to mirror. Perhaps word of her conquests against rivalling empires had reached the princess' ears. Maybe her fealty to whoever sat in the throne was offensive to her. It wasn't personal she had tried to tell her.
“You'll need to find out where your loyalties lie fast!” Mirana had said.
“My loyalty is to my people,” Lina responded.
Outside the castle walls, her people fawned and swooned over Mirana's return. For the first time in years Lina could walk among them as nothing more than a ghost.
“Perhaps we'll finally see peace!” Some gushed.
“I would give my life if it meant seeing the end of war!” Others cried.
Something stirred in her chest. A small ember that she thought she had snuffed out a long time ago. Insomnia had plagued her for as long as she could remember, but now it learned to speak and now it spoke too much. There's a chill in the air, it whispered, there's a flood coming fast rushing down tearing everything in its path and you remember how you never learned to swim?
During her nightly pacing, she recognised Kashurra's voice – then Mirana's.
“ - by Terrorblade?”
“Yes, as it stands the Nightsilver Woods are without their goddess.”
“And you think this will solve the problem?”
“I have to try. Why else would fate lead me back here?”
Kashurra didn't respond, and Mirana made a fatal mistake. She raised her voice.
“If Selemene is to be reinstated, then I have to take the throne! The Imperium's worship should be enough to-”
Lina hadn't heard the sound of her own nails scratching off the door frame until the two of them fell silent.
She should have known! The Nightsilver Woods! Selemene! This was a trap set up by that damned cult! And her people were in danger of falling victim to it! Well not if she had anything to say about it ...

Heart Sibling Headcanons;
Tumblr media
Quinlynn, Hardy/Hart, and Red/Róisín were born on the isle of the lost. When the barrier was brought down Quinlynn was 21, Hardy was 16 (almost 17), and Red was 10.
Hardy has been rumored to be an affair child: the rumors on who exactly cheated aren't really clearly and the Heart siblings aren't really sure there's any truth to it at all.
When asked why they look so different from one another, they always respond with one of two things: "Genetics are weird" or "Wonderland genetics".
Hardy is a part of Uma's crew, Quinlynn is a part of Harriet's crew, and Red is a bit of a loner but eventually joins the Badun Detective Agency.
Out of the three siblings, Red is the only one who didn't really mind working at her mother's salon. She hated having her as a teacher, though (they all did).
Hardy (along with the rest of the crew) ends up briefly working at Auradon Prep (because Uma asked him to and he's not saying no to Uma).
Hardy and Quinlynn both avoid getting trapped in Wonderland when their mother took control (when Red was twelve or so) but Red wasn't so lucky.
Hardy hated working at his mother's salon but would do it to keep the peace because he didn't want to deal with another fight.
Quinlynn gave her parents the hardest time, both when it came to working at the salon and at life in general.
Red is the only one who really yearns for her mother's love and approval still. Her siblings both gave up ages ago on that.
Quinlynn and Hardy are both protective of Red.
The three of them get along quite well. As well as siblings can, anyway.
Hart's full name is Prince Hartmann Hardison Hearts of Wonderland. He hates it and refuses to go by anything other than Hardy or Hart, even if it does cause a fight.
Quinlynn's full name is Princess Quinlynn Mirana Hearts of Wonderland. She is the only one who doesn't hate her actual first name.
Red's full name is Princess Róisín Evangeline Hearts of Wonderland. She also refuses to go by her actual name.
Quinlynn, Hardy, and Red all hold varying degrees of resentment towards their father for not protecting them, but none of them outright hate him (they claim to hate their mom, but well...she's their mom and they can't actually bring themselves to hate her).
Hardy taught Red how to do graffiti: Quinlynn pretends that she has no idea this has occurred but she's fully aware and pretends otherwise to keep up appearances as the 'stern older sister'.
Hardy spends as much time as he possibly can on the Lost Revenge without his mother storming over to get him.
Quinlynn became bitter and disillusioned with love because not only did Lil Yaz die before she could tell him how she felt but after she tried moving on with Cheekbones Stabbington, he died too. After losing them, she swore she'd never love again and she might just keep that promise. One might even call her depressed.
Hardy's weapon of choice is a pole axe, Quinlynn's weapon of choice is a Bardiche, and Red's is a flamingo croquet mallet (which her siblings made sure she knew how to use).
