11 Meaningful Pieces In Catherine’s Jewellery Collection That Belonged To Queen Elizabeth II
By Emily Chan
6 December 2023
Tumblr media
First worn by the Princess of Wales in June at the wedding of Crown Prince Hussein of Jordan and Princess Rajwa Al Saif in Amman, Jordan, the Greville chandelier earrings were seen on Queen Elizabeth II throughout her reign.
The dazzling diamond earrings made by Cartier were a wedding gift to Her late Majesty from her parents – the Queen Mother had inherited them from Dame Margaret Helen Greville, a British socialite, in 1918.
Catherine was most recently seen wearing the jewels at a Diplomatic Corps reception at Buckingham Palace.
Tumblr media
On Remembrance Sunday this year, Catherine debuted a pair of diamond and pearl leaf earrings that were previously seen on the Queen during a visit to Nigeria back in 2003.
Some experts believe that the earrings may have been detachable pieces from the brooch featuring the same design.
Tumblr media
Commissioned by King George VI, Queen Elizabeth II’s Festoon necklace features 105 loose diamonds that her father inherited when he ascended the throne.
Featuring three strands, the monarch wore the piece on numerous occasions throughout her life, from attending state banquets to posing for official portraits.
The Princess of Wales paid tribute to Her late Majesty by wearing the piece for the official Coronation photograph when King Charles III officially assumed the throne on 6 May.
Tumblr media
The Princess of Wales wore Queen Elizabeth II’s three-strand pearl necklace – an item Her Majesty was famous for – during a Buckingham Palace lunch for the governors-general of the Commonwealth nations prior to the monarch’s funeral in September 2022.
Tumblr media
The then Princess Elizabeth received this jaw-dropping diamond necklace by Cartier from the Nizam of Hyderabad as a wedding gift in 1947.
Featuring a rose motif, the royal picked the necklace herself, along with a matching floral tiara.
The Princess of Wales first wore the statement piece at a gala for the National Portrait Gallery in 2014, before rewearing it at a Buckingham Palace reception for the Diplomatic Corps in 2019.
Tumblr media
Queen Elizabeth II was first photographed wearing these diamond and pearl earrings during her Silver Jubilee celebrations – marking 25 years on the throne – in 1977.
Catherine has sported the earrings a number of times in the past, including after Prince Louis’ birth in 2018 and while visiting Commonwealth troops ahead of the Queen’s funeral.
Tumblr media
Queen Elizabeth II commissioned royal jeweller Garrard to create this four-strand pearl and diamond choker, using pearls sourced from Japan in the early 1980s.
Princess Diana was loaned the piece for a state banquet in honour of Queen Beatrix of the Netherlands in 1982, while the current Princess of Wales has worn the necklace on several occasions, including for Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip’s 70th wedding anniversary in 2017 and Her Majesty’s funeral in 2022.
Tumblr media
The Princess of Wales debuted Queen Elizabeth II’s emerald and diamond earrings during an evening reception in Jamaica in 2022, along with a matching bracelet.
Both pieces are from Her late Majesty’s emerald tassel suite, which the monarch first wore at a state dinner held for Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan of the United Arab Emirates at London’s Claridge’s Hotel in 1989.
Tumblr media
First worn by Queen Elizabeth II during the 1990s, the Princess of Wales has borrowed Her late Majesty’s diamond and pearl leaf brooch a number of times over the years, including on a visit commemorating the Battle of Passchendaele in Belgium in 2017.
Catherine wore the piece in tribute to the monarch while attending her funeral procession at Westminster Hall in September 2022.
Tumblr media
The sapphire and diamond earrings
The Princess of Wales borrowed Queen Elizabeth’s sapphire and diamond earrings for a visit to Edinburgh in 2021.
The sapphire earrings are part of a suite of sapphire and diamond jewellery by Asprey, which Her late Majesty added to her collection during the late 1970s.
The Bahrain pearl drop earrings
Featuring two pearls gifted to Her late Majesty by the Hakim of Bahrain as a wedding present, these diamond and pearl drop earrings were also worn by Princess Diana in the 1980s.
The Princess of Wales was first spotted wearing the earrings at a Remembrance Day service in 2016, before going on to wear them for Trooping the Colour in 2019 and Queen Elizabeth II’s funeral in 2022.

Īt formal occasions, such as banquets, the Princess normally wore jewellery lent to her by the Queen, who owned more than 300 items of jewellery. She also had a vast collection of gold accessories which often went unnoticed and became understated by the media. Most of the jewellery dates from the 19th and 20th centuries. Her jewellery was a mix of precious stones and costume pieces, which she sourced from London's Butler & Wilson, often reported by the media as being "priceless" jewels, which the Princess found amusing. Most of her jewels were either presents from foreign royalty, on loan from Elizabeth II, wedding presents, purchased by Diana herself, or heirlooms belonging to the Spencer family. These were separate from the coronation and state regalia of the Crown Jewels. in June 1997ĭiana, Princess of Wales, the first wife of Prince Charles (now Charles III), and mother of Prince William and Prince Harry, owned a collection of jewels, both as a member of the British royal family and as a private individual. Princess Diana’s Saudi Sapphire Suite
This isn’t about tiaras but I thought it was a good follow up to my last ask since I’ve seen so much conflicting information about this set of jewels.  This is the most accurate and up to date information that I have found but as I said a lot of people say a lot of different things about this set and unless the palace were to come out with definitive information, we’re all just guessing.
The suite was given to Princess Diana in 1981 on the occasion of her marriage by Crown Prince Fahd of Saudi Arabia.  It was made by Asprey.
Tumblr media
Necklace and Earrings - This is the easiest part of the suite because it has never been claimed that Diana altered them in any way.  The diamond necklace could be used to hold other pendants like the Prince of Wales Feathers Brooch.
Tumblr media
Watch - This is the complicated part.  It all starts with Leslie Field writing in The Queen’s Jewels in 1987 that Princess Diana used the watch to create a pair of earrings and the sapphire choker/headband.  Later research by members of RJWMB proved this to be false when they found pictures of Diana wearing the bracelet and the watch in 1996.
Tumblr media
Bracelet - The bracelet is sometimes also said to have been remodeled but as you can see in the picture above that’s not true.  It’s also written that the choker/headband is just the bracelet on a velvet band but you can see here that Diana wore the headband and the bracelet together in Japan in 1986.
Tumblr media
Ring - I haven’t found any pictures of her wearing the ring as a ring but I believe that she used it as the center of the famous choker/headband on at least one occasion.  Beth from RJWMB suggests that the ring was used to replace the large watchface of the sapphire watch to turn in into a bracelet and I agree.  You can see from the 1996 picture above that the watchface is missing and one of the sapphire sections is larger than the others.
Only sort of part of the Saudi Suite
Sapphire Choker/Headband - Now we have another piece that causes a lot of confusion.  Thanks to Franck from RJWMB we know that the famous choker/headband was not made from the Saudi Suite’s watch but instead is was made from a watch given to Diana from a Sheikha of the United Arab Emirates.  The original watch was a Lady Kalla from Vacheron Constantin.  Also notice that the bracelet has only two rows of diamonds while the choker/headband has three like the UAE watch.
Tumblr media
Diana had the watch band remodeled to hold a pear shaped sapphire of unknown origin and wore the new piece on blue velvet as a choker and across her forehead.  The reason I say that it’s sort of part of the Saudi Suite is because on one occasion she wore the ring as the centerpiece (below right and closeup) and the backing is beaded instead of velvet.
Tumblr media
Not part of the Saudi Suite
Queen Mother’s Sapphire Brooch - The Queen Mother gave Diana an enormous sapphire brooch as a wedding present.  Diana had the brooch placed as the centerpiece of a seven strand pearl necklace.  While researching this post I came across a few gossip magazine articles claiming that the diamonds used in the Duchess of Sussex’s engagement ring were taken from the brooch.  I’ll eat my right shoe if that is true because it doesn’t make sense to take diamonds from a piece like this.  Plus Diana reportedly received 300 loose diamonds as a wedding gift from the King Khalid of Saudi Arabia so there would be no need to dismantle this beautiful brooch just to get two diamonds.
Tumblr media
Sapphire Earrings - These are just Diana’s earrings that are often said to be part of the Saudi Suite or said to be made from the watch of the suite but she had even more sapphire earrings.  If the Duchess of Cambridge’s earrings are made from any of these it would be bottom half of the last pair but like I said earlier I’m not convinced that’s true.
Tumblr media
Diana had even more sapphires like these sapphire and diamond bracelets, the gold butterfly set, and the Oman Sapphire Suite.   I hope that was clear but if you have any questions feel free to ask me.

Kate Middleton Wears Full Military Gear as She Visits Armed Forces Training Academy | PEOPLE.com
Kate Middleton is thanking the troops. In honor of the UK's Armed Forces Day on Saturday, the Duchess of Cambridge shared pictures from her visit to the Pirbright Training Academy last November.
During her day at the academy, the royal mom of three, 40, spent time with the 101 Operational Sustainment Brigade at Abingdon Airfield to learn about how new recruits and serving personnel are trained.
The princess also wore full armor while taking part in some of the training exercises.
Kate made time to talk to personnel to learn more about their time in the British Army.
Kate posted a touching tribute alongside the photos on social media. Today, on Armed Forces Day, William and she would like to pay tribute to the brave men and women, past and present, serving in all armed forces, at sea, on land and in the air, here in the UK and around the world, she wrote.
She continued by thanking them for their families' sacrifice to keep them safe.
Kate promised to continue visiting the armed forces with visits to the Navy and Air Force and said she looked forward to learning more about the Royal Navy and Royal Air Force UK in due course before signing off with a simple C for Catherine.
Meanwhile, Kate and her Prince William, 40, recently viewed a special piece of artwork — their first official joint portrait.
The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge were on hand for the painted portrait's unveiling during a visit to their namesake county of Cambridgeshire. The couple received the titles of Duke and Duchess of Cambridge from Queen Elizabeth on their wedding day in April 2011.
William and Kate stopped by the University of Cambridge's Fitzwilliam Museum in the heart of Cambridge, where they viewed the painted artwork as it was revealed to the public for the first time. The piece was commissioned in 2021 by the Cambridgeshire Royal Portrait Fund, which is held by the Cambridge Community Foundation, as a gift to Cambridgeshire. It was painted by award-winning British portrait artist Jamie Coreth.
In the portrait, Kate wears her metallic emerald dress by The Vampire's Wife, which she wore during the couple's visit to Dublin in March 2020. William is seen in a dark suit and a blue tie.
In the painting, Kate also wears sentimental accessories. The Duchess of Cambridge is wearing pearl and diamond earrings, that belonged to her late mother-in-law, Princess Diana. Collingwood jewellers gave Diana the stunning pieces as a wedding present, and they are now part of Kate's collection.
The Duchess of Cambridge wore another piece from Princess Diana's jewelry collection: her three-strand pearl bracelet, which Diana famously wore with her "Elvis" outfit.
Following their viewing of the piece, Kate and Prince William met with project supporters, including the artist. They also met with Lady Sibyl Marshall, the late Sir Michael Marshall's wife, who proposed the idea for the portrait in the first place.

Hello again! I’m glad that people seem to have liked the submission on Diana’s jewellery. There are a couple more things I’d like to mention, including a mistake that is getting on my nervese: The mistake I made: the King Khalid necklace was not a gift to her but rather to HM when she visited in 1979. HM loaned it to Diana theee years later. The King Faisal necklace was also given to The Queen, not Diana’s, on a visit in the 1960’s. Again, the Queen loaned it to Diana. The final outcome was however the same, returned to vault (possibly earlier than death, these seem to have temporary loans- but I may be mistaken). As an interesting mention about how generous Middle Eastern royals have been with UK royals, The Sultan of Oman gave Diana a parure when they visited in 1986.
1. The Princess of Wales brooch. Not a very interesting piece. Diana wore it on few occassions while she was TPoW. Camilla has also worn it. The first time reactions were quite (read very) negative however so she hasn’t used it very often. Interestingly Camilla owns another prince of wales feather motif brooch called the “Ladies of Northern Wales brooch”. The design is almost identical to the original one, except the feathers are made not only of diamond but also of emerald (the original is all diamond with a teardrop emerald). It’s very blingy! 2. The original sapphire suite also included a ring and a watch. The center stone in the ring was a glorious Burmese sapphire quite a bit larger than the one in her ring. She had it made into a sapphire and diamond chocker on felt using the stones from the watch as well. The smaller sapphires in that suite were more than once refashioned into pieces- typically earrings- only to be taken apart again. 3. The art deco emerald chocker. There seems to be some confusion about its provenance. Originally it was said it was considered part of the Cambridge Emeralds, then the story changed to include Dunbar somehow but now apparently ppl are resolute they are from the Ladies of India. Whatever. Interesting tidbit: chockers became a thing for British royal women with Queen Alexandra. Its said she took to wearing them because she had a small on her neck she wanted to cover. I’ve read in more than one place the “small scar” was actually a biger one resulting from her trying to cut her own throat! 4. I wrote about a Spencer pearl teardrop and diamond necklace. It belonged to earl Spencer, not to her. Earl Spencer gave her the three strand pearl chocker (and later in life the Cartier watch). Also, the teardrop “ruby”, “emerald” and “diamond” teardrop earrings she wore when she was first married were not real diamonds but a diamanté stud with interchangeable drops. She only wore two pairs of real emerald earrings: the large studs in a ballerina setting (part of the “mystery” demi parure) and a drop pear shaped pair she got from Charles at the same time as the bracelet. Ok, that’s it. Sorry again about the mistake!
Hello again :) Thank you for coming back. Don’t be worried about the mistake at all. We all do it, even about topics we know a lot about. I forgot Haakon was heir to the throne once!
I really appreciate you sharing this info. I’m not a jewellery person myself but lots of my followers are big fans and I know they will appreciate some additional information about some of their favourite jewels. I think it’s wonderful that you wanted to share and that you enjoy learning about it. It’s always lovely to see someone with passion and knowledge about a topic :)

Kate Middleton wore a pair of Princess Diana's diamond and pearl drop earrings to Archie's christening.
Tumblr media
Meghan Markle and Prince Harry's son was christened on Saturday. Middleton wore the same pair of earrings that Princess Diana wore to Harry's christening in 1984.
Pearl drop earrings
Tumblr media
To debut her third royal baby to the world, Middleton wore pearl drop earrings belonging to the queen. Middleton has worn them several times, including on a 2016 royal tour to Holland. Queen Elizabeth last wore them for her Diamond Jubilee celebrations in 2012, acccording to People.
Middleton's red dress also paid homage to what Princess Diana wore after having Prince Harry.
Engagement ring
Tumblr media
Princess Diana's engagement ring is one of the most recognizable rings in the world. A 12-carat sapphire surrounded by 14 diamonds, it was just another piece in Garrard's catalogue that any member of the public could buy until Lady Diana Spencer picked it as her engagement ring and made it famous, according to InStyle. Prince William proposed to Middleton with it in 2010 and she's continued to wear it since then.
Sapphire earrings
Tumblr media
The sapphires in these earrings are believed to have come from the strap of a watch given to Princess Diana as a wedding present from the Crown Prince of Saudi Arabia, according to the Daily Mail. The Princess wore them as studs, and Middleton reinvented them with a drop-down style.
Cambridge Lover's Knot tiara
Tumblr media
This pearl Cambridge Lover's Knot tiara was given to Princess Diana as a wedding present from the Queen. The crown consists of 19 arches and contains 38 drop-shaped pearls suspended from pretzel-like twists known as lover's knot bows, according to People. While the Duchess of Cambridge doesn't wear tiaras all that often, she donned the crown at a diplomatic reception at Buckingham Palace in 2016.
Pearl bracelet
Tumblr media
Jewelry designer Nigel Milne created the three-strand pearl bracelet in 1988. Princess Diana wore it with her iconic "Elvis" dress and at the Birthright Ball, both in 1989.
Milne said he was "delighted" to see the Duchess of Cambridge making it her own.
"The Princess of Wales was the most wonderful inspiration for us jewelers in that she wore her jewelry with such style and panache," he wrote on his website.

Bridal Jewellery Trends Inspired by Prince Harry and Meghan Markle
The Meghan Markle-effect isn’t just a flash-in-the-pan but a global phenomenon that’s shaping everything from dresses and cakes to jewellery and headpieces.
The traditional vision of a princess bride, akin to Grace Kelly, Princess Diana and Catherine Middleton, the Duchess of Cambridge, helps to fuel wedding conversations like nothing else.
Now is the time for jewellers to capitalise on these oh-so-important royal conversations and sell their find diamond pieces in the context Meghan’s awe-inspiring big day.
WATCH! The #IJL2018 Royal Wedding Special from Kensington Palace!
youtube
For retailers and designer brands, we’ve rounded up the top bridal trends of 2018/2019 inspired by the royal couple. Although some trends have blossomed since Prince Harry popped the question, others are likely to continue to flourish as royal wedding fever takes hold of the next six months.
Bridal Jewellery Trends 2018/2019
Trilogy Rings
Ever since Meghan flashed her three-diamond engagement ring, trilogies have been big news in the fine jewellery sphere. Meghan’s ring is set with a three carat cushion-cut centre stone, flanked by two smaller round-cut diamonds gifted to Prince Harry by Princess Diana.
Unsurprisingly, Meghan’s ring has encouraged brides-to-be to see trilogy rings in a new light, but perhaps the more exciting development is the fancy-cut centre solitaire, which may inspire a whole host of emerald, radiant, marquise, pear, oval and cushion cut designs, set alongside two ‘safer’ round brilliant cuts.
A post shared by Kensington Palace (@kensingtonroyal) on Dec 21, 2017 at 3:59am PST
Plus, the heirloom quality of Harry’s bespoke engagement ring design is likely to remind future couples that sentimental stones and jewellery pieces can be repurposed for a new era. You can read more about this on Professional Jeweller.
Return of the Classics
Royal weddings speak of tradition and grandeur, which is why so many classic silhouettes have sped back into fashion in recent months. Think nipped-in waists inspired by 1950s wedding dresses, lace, long veils that skim the floor, lengthy trains and, of course, classic jewellery pieces like diamond stud earrings, tennis bracelets, pearl strands and solitaire pendants.
A post shared by Claudia Bradby Jewellery (@claudiabradby) on May 15, 2018 at 1:54am PDT
Claudia Bradby of IJL 2018 exhibitor Claudia Bradby Jewellery is attending the big day and shared this image of her pearl choices on Instagram!
Champagne Shades
Although Meghan is expected to wear white, the current trend for champagne, pale peach, pink and lilac wedding dresses from the likes of Alice Temperley and Vera Wang should spur excitement among jewellers. Champagne diamonds, pastel shades of soft yellow, hints of pink and soft beige-brown diamonds could signal more adventurous fine and bridal jewellery options heading into autumn. Watch this space!
Statement Earrings
With royal etiquette typically demanding longer sleeves, higher necklaces and a more modest approach to dressing, statement earrings really have chance to shine. As the summer wedding season approaches, retailers from international fashion brands to bespoke designer-makers may see renewed fervour for their tear-drop, chandelier and sleeper earrings that hint at a bold personality behind a demure dress.
youtube
The Contemporary Bride
The fluff of taffeta and lace is contrasted with the elegance of bridal minimalism – think columns of silk skimming the floor without the usual beading, ruffles or sequins. Meghan Markle is expected to veer into this territory, unlike her sister-in-law Catherine, which means equally minimal jewellery is order of the day. Delicate diamond line necklaces, bezel-set diamond bracelets and simple pearls are likely to shine.
Heavenly Headpieces
Whenever a royal wedding approaches, thoughts turn to tiaras. Although it is unclear whether Meghan will wear a borrowed tiara from a member of the royal family, it is presumed that she will wear some kind of hair adornment. Catherine Middleton wore the Queen’s Cartier Halo Scroll Tiara for her wedding, so perhaps Meghan will follow in her footsteps?
Something Blue
From Catherine Middleton’s blue sapphire to Princess Eugenie’s padparadscha sapphire – coloured gemstones are having a bridal moment. With the tradition for ‘something blue’, subtle cornflower blue sapphire pendants, stud earrings and hair pins are likely to make an appearance on aisles up-and-down the country. The ongoing obsession with pink diamonds at auction is also likely to make pink sapphire designs a coveted wedding day treat for brides.
Advertising your most traditional bridal designs in a host of bespoke colourways will no doubt spur the creativity in customers.
youtube
Bountiful Bows
Bows are big news in bridal… and they have been for decades. But what makes them new for 2018 is their sheer scale, with swathes of fabric at the base of the back, the waistline and neckline on couture wedding dresses (look to Viktor & Rolf, Lela Rose, Caroline Herrera and Reem Acra for inspiration).
In jewellery, Meghan may hint at this overarching trend with diamond-set bows by the likes of Garrard, or Queen Victoria’s trio of bow brooches that now belong to the queen.
With predictions flying across every air wave, it’s clear the world is counting down to discover what Meghan and her bridesmaids will wear on May 19. With the wedding expected to kick-off on Saturday at 12pm, the test for jewellers, manufacturers and brands will be how quick they can react, and how accurate their estimates of the market really were.
