Society needs a 2.5D animated Hadestown. I've seen it twice on Broadway and the feeling of being there can only be captured on film by whatever style of animation Prince of Egypt and Treasure Planet were in.

Prisoner of a forbidden love
Tumblr media
It was the last day of Hans's sentence, and every hammer strike in the stables echoed like an unrelenting reminder of the inevitable. He felt the weight of an imminent farewell rise before him, as unavoidable as fate itself, and with every nail he drove in, it seemed he was also closing a chapter that had been as long as it was painful. The return to the Southern Isles awaited him at dawn, where his family, indifferent or full of pity, would welcome a son whose shadow had grown larger than his achievements. However, it was not the judgment of his lineage that tormented him; what truly troubled him was the impending farewell to Queen Elsa, whose kindness had been an unnoticed balm that kept him afloat during those long years of atonement.
The day had passed with the monotonous certainty of routine, and in every pause, Hans searched for Elsa, yearning for a moment to express what had rooted itself in his chest like an unconfessed secret. First, he saw her in the audience chamber, busy with a council of ministers; the air was thick with formalities, preventing him from approaching. Later, in the gardens, the breeze carried a fresh fragrance that almost made the pain of waiting bearable. However, a maid arrived with news of an incident in the city, and Elsa hurried away, leaving him with a barely formed greeting on his lips. Finally, in the portrait hall, as night settled over the castle, a messenger interrupted him, bursting in with the urgency of a message requiring the queen's immediate attention.
Twilight fell like a silent cloak, and as the moon ascended majestically over the mountains, Hans felt time slipping through his fingers. Gripped by sudden determination, he slipped through the dark corridors, guided only by the fervent beating of his own heart. When he reached the royal office, the guards blocked his way, their firm expressions and hushed voices denying him passage.
“It’s not possible to interrupt Her Majesty at this hour,” one of them murmured, though Hans's gaze shone with an intensity that belied any resignation.
“I must see her,” he insisted, his voice heavy with urgency, surprising even himself. “It’s not a whim; it’s a necessity.”
“You heard him. Get out now, or you’ll spend your last night in Arendelle sleeping in prison,” the other guard shot back.
Hans turned away but, in a swift motion, tried to slip between the two sturdy guards, though they caught him in an instant. The commotion in the hallway quickly reached Elsa's ears, and from within, she ordered in a firm voice for them to let him pass. The guards reluctantly released the prince, and he straightened his clothing as best he could before grasping the door handle. When he crossed the threshold, he found her behind her desk, the warm light of a lamp caressing her pale face, giving her an ethereal glow. The silence between them felt tangible, like a frozen mist that chilled the air and froze the words in his throat.
“Your Majesty…” Hans began, the formal title stinging his lips, erecting a barrier between them. “I... would not have dared to interrupt you if it weren't for a need I have long kept silent. I know I don’t deserve your forgiveness or the honor of these words, but... if I leave tomorrow without telling you how I feel, I... fear I will carry this weight forever.”
Elsa watched him with an impenetrable expression; her blue gaze was an unexplored ocean that revealed not the slightest emotion. When she finally exhaled a sigh, the sound was almost imperceptible but seemed to shatter the air into a thousand fragments of uncertainty.
“And what is it that prevents you from leaving in peace?” she asked, her voice cloaked in the calm that was so characteristic of her.
Hans took a step forward, as if in that gesture he sought to shorten the distance between them not only in space but also in time and circumstance.
“I love you, Elsa.” The words emerged with an unusual vulnerability, his voice barely a whisper, seemingly meant more for himself than for her. “I have loved you for months, since the moment I realized the magnitude of your strength and grace. You have shown unwavering kindness, even to someone like me who deserves nothing but scorn. If I must leave at dawn, I want you to know that I leave my heart here, even if you never return the feeling.”
Silence settled over them again, but this time it was different, charged with a palpable tension, as if the world had held its breath. Elsa slowly rose from her seat. She took a step toward him, and in her eyes shone something different, a warm glow that contrasted with the icy serenity that always surrounded her.
“Hans…” she said, and her voice, for the first time, sounded almost broken. “What I feel for you goes beyond what I had allowed myself to admit. You have changed; I see that, and I won’t deny that my heart has changed too.”
Hope ignited in Hans's eyes, and he took another step forward, almost brushing against Elsa’s hands.
“Then I won’t leave,” he said fervently. “I will stay in Arendelle, under any condition you impose. If you allow me, I will remain by your side.”
Feeling the smile that barely bloomed on her face fade, Elsa averted her gaze, and an unfathomable sadness settled on her features. She stepped back, as if that closeness was a painful luxury she could not afford.
“It’s not that simple,” she whispered. “My people will never accept a bond between their queen and a prince who once conspired against her. Nor will my sister. No matter how much you have changed, the scars of your betrayal remain in the memory of many.”
“Let me try,” Hans pleaded, his voice heavy with sincere desperation. “I will show Anna and everyone that I am worthy of you. I will do anything you ask; I will serve the kingdom in the humblest of conditions, if that will allow me to be by your side.”
Elsa gently shook her head.
“I’m sorry,” she said, and her words were ice that penetrated to the bone. “As much as I love you too, I cannot risk the kingdom and my relationship with my sister. Not even for you.”
In that moment, Hans felt the world crumble. There were no tears in his eyes, but his chest burned with the pain of a doomed love. He stood still.
“Please, Elsa” he whispered, his voice fragile.
Elsa felt the ice in her heart threatening to break. She took a step in his direction and cupped his cheeks in her hands.
“I don’t wish to hurt you, Hans. But as much as I desire it,” she said, with a sadness in her tone that overflowed each word, “this is not a dream we can live.”
The words dissipated into the air, leaving them both in a silence heavy with what could never be said. And then, unable to hold back any longer, Elsa leaned in and placed a fleeting kiss on his lips, a frozen sigh of what could have been. When she pulled away, her eyes sparkled with a final unshed tear.
Hans remained motionless, the bitter comfort of the kiss still burning on his skin.
“I don’t want to leave you.”
Elsa looked at him with a sadness she could not hide, an expression that seemed to silently plead with him not to make this harder than it already was.
“I don’t want that either.” she said, her voice broken, as if with every syllable she were letting go of something precious. He felt those words sink deep into his being “But sometimes, the greatest act of love is letting someone go. What you desire… what I desire… will not change reality. Please, Hans, just go.”
Elsa's words were a sentence Hans could not revoke, no matter how much his heart resisted accepting it. He felt an invisible hand pushing him back, separating him from her even as his soul pleaded otherwise. He took an uncertain step toward the door, then another, each movement painful as if leaving a part of himself behind, as if the room itself were reclaiming him, refusing to let him go.
“We can try…” he stammered, turning his back on his own instinct but unable to contain the words. “We can fight together… for everything that now seems impossible.”
Elsa closed her eyes; her lips curved into a bitter smile, as if she heard a plea that in another world she could have answered.
“What would people think, Hans? Or my sister? I don’t want to lose her when I’ve just managed to get her back,” she replied, and the pain in her voice was so evident that Hans felt the air grow thick, suffocating. “And you… you have a future awaiting you in the Southern Isles; everything you have worked for these years will be overshadowed by this. If you truly love me, if you truly understand what this sacrifice means… then you will know you must go. Not because I wish it, but because it is what must be.”
Hans felt his heart break; each of Elsa’s words resonated in his chest like an icy blow he could not reject. His steps wavered as he left the room, his shoulders slumped as if carrying an impossible weight. And yet, he kept walking, even as he struggled against the helplessness filling him, as if he wanted to turn on his heels and cross the threshold once more, run to her, and take her away from the fate that kept her imprisoned.
But upon reaching the corridor, the guards, entirely indifferent to what had transpired in that room, closed the doors with a dry, final sound, as if sealing his fate with the weight of an irrevocable truth. Hans paused for a moment, feeling in his chest the fading echo of the kiss, the bitter certainty that he had lost more than he would ever be allowed to gain. And in that instant, he knew that while his body obeyed the logic of reason, his heart would always remain there, with her, a prisoner of a love that could not be but would never cease to exist.

🐾HAPPY 30th ANNIVERSARY TO THE LION KING!!!🐾
Tumblr media
This movie has been with me my entire life. It was the first film my parents took me to see in theaters. I used to play out the entire movie, word-for-word (even the songs), with my toys of the characters. I can still quote most of the movie, from beginning to end. I have seen the live Broadway version in person (and it was incredibly beautiful!). I was so pleased when it re-released in theaters in 3D, and had to go see it. I adore its sequel as well. The songs will forever live rent free in my brain.
Happy 30th to this amazing film that has touched so many hearts, including mine! 🥹
