My dear prince Gyeseong with his soft eyes and and pure heart. Love him. He is a prince, but he should be born as a princess. The great thing is that his mother understands his personality and tries to help him find a happier life. Gyeseong is very smart, sensitive, brave and selfless.

I’m crying.
I just love the Queen so much. She had to burn down Gyeseong’s secret place in order to protect them. But she also gave the gift of the painting as their true self and gave her mother’s hairpin that she would have given to her daughter. She may not fully understand it but Gyeseong is her child no matter what face he’s (she’s? not sure exactly how to properly gender in the context of a saeguk). She gave her full love and acceptance.
This whole plot was totally not what I expected but I love it. It’s also stressing me out since it’s only ep 3 and Gyeseong is still in a dangerous situation. There’s still 13 episodes to go and there’s still the issue of the Grand Prince and god knows what else they come up with.
Love how everything is out in the open between the Queen and the Queen Dowager. They know what the other wants.
I was worried that Lady Shin had betrayed the Queen but it looks like they had anticipated that and gave up the information about the whereabouts of the Grand Prince to protect Gyeseong. Honestly I love their relationship.

Grand Prince Seongnam and The Queen
This is just my guess and what I feel. I could be completely off. Hahaha.
Anyhow, in the first few eps of Under The Queen’s Umbrella, I felt sorry for Grand Prince Seongnam. It felt as if, Grand Prince Seongnam sees his mother’s kindness and love through her actions for other people.
He sees it when he sees the Queen doing everything in her power to treat the Crown Prince. He sees it when the Queen burns Grand Prince Gyeseong secret but Gyeseong isn’t mad at her. He sees it on how she protects the Crown Princess and the Grand heir. But none of this directed to him. He only sees his mother deep love and kindness for the people around him. He knows his mother is a good person. But towards him? I’m sure it must feel a little cold.
I’m certain Seongnam resents a little bit that he wasn’t at the palace with his brothers since birth. And from the way he was left alone in general, I think he wasn’t showered with love and affection by the Queen. Not because she didn’t love him. I think she was afraid and most of all, probably embarassed with herself.
Personally, since Grand Prince Seongnam was just taken away from her at birth, I think it’s a sore point.
She lost her son. And she couldn’t get him back. She probably just cried and wailed. But she had no real power against the Queen Dowager.
It was the Crown Prince who brought Grand Prince Seongnam back.
I think when he returned, I think the Queen was afraid. I think to her, she couldn’t face her boy. She probably felt like she failed him. Of course she loved him deeply but I think she must have been disappointed in herself for not being able to have Seongnam by her side.
I felt like when he returned, she just made sure he was safe and let him do what he liked. I think she dared not force him to love her or acknowledge her because how could she if she failed him so badly. I think she dared not scold him too much. I think she dared not mother him too much because she failed him all these years.
But I think Seongnam is probably a sore point in her life. Not Seognam’s fault. She probably wished she could have done better. She probably wished she could have defended her baby better and be by his side instead of letting them take him away.
This has a lot of potential and I just hope the writer’s don’t screw it up. Yea.

Episode 4 of Under the Queen's Umbrella
A mother's love and making difficult choices were big themes in episode 3 and 4.
I love that Queen Hwaryeong told Prince Simso that she'll keep his galavanting with her sons a secret from his mother since he enjoyed himself so much that day.
It's very clear to us the audience that Hwaryeong loves her children with all of her heart and every choice she makes is for their safety.
For instance Prince Seongnam/Kang is clearly and understandably mad/sad/upset that he didn't get to be raised by Hwaryeong for the first ten years of his life. He also doesn't know the reason as to why he specifically had to live outside of the palace unlike his brothers. So to him it just feels like she doesn't care about him and to an extension - his brothers.
She clearly has her reasons for not telling him why yet, we'll soon find out why I'm sure, so for now there's that very big piece of friction/hurt/sadness between them two.
I do like though that Seongnam gets to understand his mother better through his brothers. Prince Gyeseong saying that the reason him and Hwaryeong were out together alone is a secret and him being visibly calm and happy even though his secret hideout was burnt down.
And Seongnam learning that Hwaryeong sent Crown Prince (what is his name? I can't seem to find it) to go see him after she got caught crying on her secret trips to see him.
Seongnam knows/sees/hears evidence of her love for her sons and him but he can't reconcile his hurt and confusion and feelings of abandonment.
It's fine though because I'm sure that when he finds out the reason as to why he was taken away. He'll finally get to understand her better and then they'll improve their relationship.
Queen Hwaryeong and Prince Seongnam are very similar.
Also the daughter of the minister of war is adorable and I'm excited for her and Seongnam's love to blossom! She and Hwaryeong are also quite similar, to me at least.
I can already imagine the things mother-in-law and daughter-in-law could get up to! 🤣🥰
Hwaryeong and Crown Prince break my heart because these two love and understand worry about each other so much!
His face when she said that she wasn't tired while staying up to read the medical books and then those looks of love and sadness that they gave each other during the mother and sons family meal made me emotional!
They both understand the pressure that the other is under and he feels like he's failing her but like it's very clear that she doesn't care about any of it. She just wants him to get better and stay alive!
The mother and sons dinner was so sweet! They all genuinely get along and love each other so much!! 🥰🥰🥰 That's my family!!!
Also not to get all conspiracy theorist but we all saw that 5 ducks playing together and the blood on the one of the ducklings, at the end of the episode. It's clearly sayingg that one of the sons will get hurt or die. But I kind of feel like it won't be the Crown Prince. We all expect it to be him since he's so I'll but what if they pull the rug from under our feet and it ends up being Prince Muan or last born Prince Ilyoung instead?
All of them are in danger just by virtue of being her sons so what if one of them dies. It would be a interesting plot twist!
I want them all to survive but I don't know how kind this show will be to us.
Also was Prince Seongnam taken away because his father isn't the King? The old queen said that she still has a son left - and didn't Seongnam grow up in the village that the old queen moved to? Maybe Hwaryeong had a thing or was bethroed to one of her sons before she was put into the crown princess selection process.
These are all just wild theories so don't take any of this to heart!
I'm just here to have fun and suffer along with the Hwaryeong and her sons.
I love her and her sons so much.

Under the Queen's Umbrella: Thoughts on episodes 9-10 (spoilers!)
Another unwanted post with crappy screen grabs. Spoiler alert! I think I have to separate this post by issue / arc to keep it somewhat organized.
================================================
Queen Hwaryeong & the King vs. the Dowager:
We see the aftermath of the iconic cuckoo pint gift/threat. The Queen shows the King proof that the Dowager was behind the assassination attempt on Grand Prince Seongnam, and the Dowager supposedly poisons herself with the plant the Queen gave her to force a kind of stalemate on the issue. Again, the acting between the two ladies is ridiculously good.
I never expected to like the King, but I started to admire him this week. He believed the Queen right away, and lightly told her off about the plant thing, not because she could have killed his mother but because it delayed bringing the Dowager to face justice even more. Their dynamic is so intriguing I'd love to know more especially since they've given us another flashback of Hwaryeong as Crown Princess.
Let's talk about that flashback and the rumor about Seongnam's parentage. If the rumor is what gives the Dowager whatever power over the Queen then should we think that there must be some truth to it? (Was it just me or did they pay attention to the baby's birthmark?) Or does it have something to do with conceiving during the time of mourning? I need more details!
Here's a theory, though I'm probably wrong. What if the Dowager hired someone to take advantage of the young Crown Princess while her husband was in mourning and inaccessible? And that incident resulted in the conception of Seongnam? After rewatching ep 9, I was so intrigued that the King's first reaction was to stop the rumors to protect his wife rather than interrogate her. So that tells us that he knows the truth. Either Seongnam really is his kid but conceived at the wrong time, or he found out what happened and decided to recognize Seongnam as his own. This would also explain the Queen's motivation to set up the women's shelter by the time she was pregnant with Grand Prince Muan. And my gosh that shelter and that flashback! (I'm not one for slapping scenes but I admit the justice is satisfying)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I still enjoy the chess motif. I love that no matter how brilliant Hwaryeong is, she still makes less than ideal decisions and reveals more than I care for tbh. I love how she finds a way to get her enemies to stab each other in the back (and front lol). She knows that the Hwangs are nowhere near as shrewd as the Dowager, who would never put all of her eggs in the same basket (I love that about the Dowager btw).
I also like her silent teamwork with the King, who's been making subtle but effective moves to keep the contest fair and delay a rebellion at the same time (!) He has to maintain the illusion of being helpless but when he takes a step it always seems to count.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Meanwhile the Queen is steering Minister Yoon to her side. This makes me even more curious about that request that the deposed Queen Yoon will make that Hwaryeong won't be able to refuse. My guess is that it has to do with getting revenge on the Dowager and the King.
The Contest:
We've all known from the get-go that Seongnam, Bogeom, and Uiseong would be the final three so no surprise there. We all knew Uiseong is a murderous a-hole and I enjoyed him being told off by the King. His choice to prioritize the contest over keeping the peace should have been grounds for disqualification, not to mention the assassination attempt against GP Gyeseong.
I like the bond building between Seongnam and Bogeom, especially when the latter refused to use the intel his mother gave him. I swear Consort Tae has much to learn from her son, she's going to get him killed if she keeps this up. I have a feeling that if Bogeom becomes Crown Prince, then he would most likely end up dead. I'm afraid Uiseong might kill him while Seongnam and the Queen (who would have to give up her title) are indisposed. All the more likely if it turns out that Uiseong has no relation to the King or if he goes against the Dowager.
I never cared for the romantic storylines, but I see why they are necessary here. Cheongha comes off a little stalkery and desperate at the moment but I see how she can be an asset to the Queen's cause once they officially meet. She's resourceful and bold, two characteristics the Queen definitely values. As for Muan and Cho-wol, the fated-from-the-womb cliché wasn't my thing but at least it gave us some insight into the women's shelter. I'm not interested in how it will end happily for them, but I did enjoy this scene (Hwaryeong's face lol).
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I'm just glad Ilyoung and Hodong are okay, tbh. Let the babies have their food trip and everything will be fine.
Motherhood:
The show has such a nuanced depiction of motherhood. Instead of rose-colored glasses, we get a kaleidoscope. We have Hwaryeong who represents the modern ideal despite all her flaws. But we're also presented with other perspectives that are realistic and relatable. This week shed more light on the relationship between Consort Ko and Prince Simso. His early signs of intelligence fueled her (projected) ambitions, which in turn have led her to push her son to vie for a position that he never wanted and neglect his overall well-being. It's all too real y'all.
Despite her actions and corrosive words towards him, not even the Queen doubts Consort Ko's love for Simso. But it only goes to show that maternal love can manifest in different and potentially harmful ways. It's something that the Queen herself has to control, even if her nagging comes from a place of worry for her children's lives. I love everything about the whole drinking / magic cup scene, which also tells me that Muan and Cho-wol are endgame because the Queen will eventually allow it.
I know we won't be stanning Consort Ko anytime soon but I wouldn't wish death upon someone who knows how to right her wrongs. Woo Jeong-won's acting was amazing this week, btw. She really made the most of her screen time. You know it's good writing when you can sympathize with a character who's done some detestable things. (I've been trying to gif this scene but I don't know the best way to cut it because it says so much with no dialogue!?!)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I get that her helping Gyeseong was thanks to Hwaryeong saving Simso but you gotta admit it felt so good to see Consort Hwang demoted!
TLDR: It's still really good. Can't wait til Saturday to know more about the Prince Seongnam situation.

While I’m really enjoying Under the Queen’s Umbrella, it’s a little bit of an the tonal shifts are a bit of an adjustment. On the one hand, it is what the drama is described as: The Queen is supposed to act with grace and dignity but she’s also trying rein in her rowdy, troublemaker sons into decent Princes. And it is that. Her running around, nagging them, trying to get them to show up on time, to behave etc.
What the drama neglected to add that the Queen was not just trying to rein in her trouble making sons. She was really doing everything she can to not only protect her own life but the lives of her 5 sons and, while they haven’t mentioned it, the life of her grandson (and since the Crown Princess is pregnant, probably her life and the life of her unborn child). This puts a decidedly different spin on the whole show.
First of all, I’m really loving how this show is focusing on the scheming and plotting of the women. Men have really little to do with it. It’s the Queen Dowager, the Queen and the Concubines (in particular the one with the eldest son of the king whose whole vibe is whining I should be the Crown Prince).
I love that the big bad behind it all is the grandma. Who totally poisoned the first Crown Prince and was likely behind the killing of his bothers once they left the palace. I’m not clear on how one was apparently allowed to live though? I’m 100% convinced that the “making a king” book she has is just some random, but vaguely believable, BS she made up and has now distributed to select concubines to have them on her side.
I love the Queen, who is highly intelligent and loves her sons fiercely even as she wants to throttle them. She personally read through all the textbooks and made study notes for her sons. I do think that Evil Grandma has underestimated her. I also love her relationship with her lady’s maid. I’m not sure who was the one who saw her with the deposed queen, but I hope that doesn’t go badly for her.
As for the sons, my favourite so far is the second eldest, Seongnam. I cheered when he told Prince Whiny that if he was to ever become king, Seongnam would personally make sure that his kingdom lay in ruins. That is not an idle threat. Out of all the Grand Princes, Seongnam seems to be the best suited to be Crown Prince. He does have an air of mystery surrounding him but he’s intelligent, and level headed. He’s clearly close to his brothers, in particular the Crown Prince who has asked him to be his cohort. Seongnam knows something is going on and it’s further cemented by what his mother says (or doesn’t say). Seongnam will do everything in his power to protect them.
I will admit, I was convinced that the big mystery with Gyeseong was that he had a gay lover. There was little other reason for the Queen and Lady Shin to have that extreme of a reaction. He may not have a lover, but he is gay, trans, or a cross dresser. And now that one concubine knows he is in an extremely precarious situation, even more so that before. I honestly don’t know how the Queen will protect him now. It’s only the second episode too!
As for the other two sons, I dislike Muan. The youngest one is mostly just a kid but I like him.
