Sneak Peek at Chapter 11 of Hearts on the Mend

Nothing particularly spoilery here but for those who were interested in Sokka's future duties:

Lunches, to Sokka’s chagrin, were now to be spent with Princess Azula. The Princess would then brief him on his afternoon’s duties, which Sokka discovered would primarily be spent entertaining guests of the royal family with a few exceptions.

One day he read poetry with a handful of noble ladies whose mates had business with the Fire Lord. Sokka made many mistakes during his recitations which led to some giggles hidden behind delicate fingers, but most of the group seemed enthralled at his interpretations when he spoke of the symbolism behind the prose. It was a little grating, and he was certain they thought his words were the novel musings of a foreigner, but he could stomach it for just a few hours in an afternoon.

Another day he helped wrangle a visiting merchant’s hyperactive brood in the gardens. Sokka wasn’t one to brag about his way with kids but he certainly thought he could handle it well enough. By the end of the evening he was more than a little bushed, enough that he slept way past the start of the next day’s yoga practice, but he didn’t regret the hours he spent running around after squealing toddlers as they chased brightly colored umbrella peahens across the great lawns.

One evening Sokka held a silent vigil with a grieving widower whose mate, a captain in the Fire Nation’s Navy, had passed away during a tropical storm just days from his next shore leave. That had been a hard one for Sokka but he felt a strange companionship for the Omega man left alone save for his lost mate’s accolades and promised stipend.

Here's the thing. Sokka gets swept up in the euphoria of a war won, but Zuko is drowning in his new responsibilities and there's just a mismatch of.. What they want for the future. Zuko very much thinks Sokka has not really thought about this, and that he doesn't understand what a marriage to him means. He is the Fire Lord. Sokka would be the prince consort, with all kinds of responsibilities of his own.. Sokka would have the same lack of freedom Zuko is now once again experiencing, and Zuko doesn't think Sokka deserves that, especially because Sokka might end up resenting him :' )

i do feel like you all deserve to know what i had planned for my Zuko Amongst the Dragons sequel fic that I'm just not going to get around to. Here's my rough outline so you can at least know what the characters get up to.

Ten years later

Zuko is Fire Lord now, he and Iroh recently agreed he was ready and Iroh did retire to BSS

Sokka was ambassador but now is Prince Consort and really just helps Zuko manage the stress and responsibilities

Zuko talks when he has to but is overall kind of exhausted of the human shit- he has to pretend to be normal in front of others

Can truly be himself around Sokka and Druk and Izumi

They kind of have a thing with Sukki, that’s where Izumi came from

Izumi and Druk are siblings lmao

Azula is… around. She stayed with the dragons a couple years but now she Gets Zuko more and they have a basis for their relationship

She has apologized to Sokka for what she did to him and he’s… mostly cool with her but still has nightmares and tends to avoid her

Also Sokka does have heart issues because of what Azula did to him

Sokka and Zuko are totally able to help each other with their trauma but ALSO if they have to be away from each other they are a MESS

Katara is chief, she and Aang are married. They have a baby. Sokka doesn’t see them a lot because Katara doesn’t like to come to the FN and Sokka doesn’t love to go to the SWT so

Toph hangs out a lot but she’s gotten kind of busy in Republic City

— the thing that delays their wedding the longest is sokka trying to figure out what his official title is. prince/ king consort is so long and clunky, and like… fire lord zuko and lord sokka kinda sounds like a stutter…. and king sokka was rejected by every member of their friend group… and “that guy sokka” was vetoed by the council so they just are Stumped

— — hakoda really wants him to go by chief sokka of the fire nation but only to make zuko’s cabinet members angry

— theyre one of those couples that have like 1000 inside jokes that they will never explain to anyone else, so they’ll be in the middle of a party & sokka will just nonchalantly say something like “oh didn’t you hear? ive decided to remove my kneecaps,” and zuko laugh so hard he’ll snort champagne through his nose as everyone else just stares

— every time zuko gets a paper cut sokka fully acts like its an assassination attempt 

— sokka braids zukos hair once it gets long enough since sokka used to braid katara’s hair, so hes like amazing at it

— sokka goes grey first and finds his first one in his early thirties, which horrifies him. zuko has no mercy. he turns to him while cuddling and holds his face all sweet then just

— when izumi has iroh ii they are the most over involved grandpas ever. when iroh starts showing a real passion in sailing, sokka bawls his eyes out he’s so happy. iroh does ballet when he’s younger and zuko sets up little stages for him to perform for the staff in the courtyard.

Fictober 2022 Day 31

Prompt: 7 - "Check that again, are you sure?"

Fandom: Avatar: The Last Airbender

Note: AU where Zuko joins the gang early and is not the Blue Spirit. Also, Zuko goes by Li and is not known to be a fire bender.

Sokka looked over the bounty posting. He saw a good couple for the Gaang minus Li who was new enough that the Fire Nation didn't know that he was a member. Though one poster caught the non-bender's attention. 

The poster depicted a masked figure that as the name implied looked like a spirit. Their reward was almost as much as Aang's was. Though there was no information about them at all.

"The Blue Spirit?" Sokka questioned. Katara and Li shot him a confused look. Aang jumped up in excitement. 

"Ooo, I know them they saved me once," Aang said. Li snorted. This earned the swordsmen a look from everyone. 

"Check that again, are you sure?" Li asked in humor. Aang pointed.

"I'm serious they did," Aang said.

"That's impossible," Li responded.

"Why's that?" Katara asked

"The Blue Spirit is a character from a Fire Nation play," Li said. Aang frowned and then jumped up.

"Maybe someone from the Fire Nation wants to help us but is hiding their identity behind the mask," Aang said

"I doubt it," Li said. "It's likely someone from the colonies mocking the Fire Nation." 

"How would that be mocking the Fire Nation?" Katara asked

"Cause, the Blue Spirit or as he's called in the play the Dark Water Spirit is the villain in Love Amongst the Dragons. He cursed the Dragon Emperor to become mortal. The Dragon Emperor managed to break the curse and defeat the Dark Water Spirit but the spirit managed to escape." Li explained. Realizing that he had been ranting he cut himself off before he could say more. "The mocking comes from the idea that no one can actually catch the Dark Water Spirit."

"How do you know this?" Sokka asked suspiciously. Li claimed to be from the colonies but Sokka had a sneaking suspicion that it was a lie. Li blushed and rubbed his neck destroying all the intimidation that his scars gave him in one go. He really was just an awkward dork.

"I...uh...saw the play in the colonies before I left," Li said awkwardly. Aang fell.

"Aw, I had hoped that they could be a fire bender so they could teach me," Aang said. Li looked at the poster.

"Sorry, Aang even if they were from the Fire Nation they wouldn't be a fire bender. It's considered a disgrace for a bender to use any weapons." Li said.

"That's stupid," Katara said.

"It's considered an admission of weakness. That they aren't strong enough to be able to defend themself with their bending." Li explained. 

"That's stupid." Sokka huffed. Li shrugged.

"That's just how the Fire Nation is," Li said.

"We can change it," Aang said

"How?" Li asked. "The next in line is Princess Azula and she will follow in the Fire Lord's footsteps. If not her then the Dragon of the West who would probably end the war but won't change the structure of the Fire Nation. If Princes Kiyi were to become Fire Lord, Fire Lord Consort Ursa would become regent, tho I doubt will change anything." 

"There has to be someone else that is willing to change the Fire Nation," Katara said. Li shrugged.

"Maybe a distant cousin or relative that is willing to do anything to get the throne," Li said.

"Why do we even need the royal family? We could find a nice member of the Fire Nation and put them on the throne?" Katara asked.

"You'll spark a civil war," Li said simply. "Let's get moving." He turned around and began to walk away.

Sokka and the rest of the gaang looked at each other. Sokka shrugged and they all followed the elder teen.

“Nothing,” he says, because his people aren’t ridiculous. “You’d just be my husband.” 

“We can propose that at the next meeting,” he says, bending his neck even further down like that’ll hide his smile. “We can start having people address you as His Royal Husband.” 

Zuko’s joking, but that’s be better, honestly.

ok i was just listening to @littlespoonsokka's zukka mitski playlist so like. all of those. but especially first love/late spring. nour has a post somewhere in drafts about how it's a tbr zukka song and like.... “please hurry leave me i can't breathe please don't say you love me”. yeah.

zuko: zukka! for me the simplest way to explain why i find the ship so compelling is that they have similar struggles (their relationships with masculinity, feelings of inadequacy compared to their prodigy younger sister, etc) and interests (swords, literature, general nerdiness, etc) that they can bond over, and yet have opposing flaws (sokka's perfectionism vs zuko's impulsivity, sokka's pessimism vs zuko's almost naïve idealism, sokka's emotional repression vs zuko's oversharing tendencies, etc) that they can help each other improve with.

sokka: also zukka of course, but sukka invented bi4bi relationships and yuekka is thee epic romance of atla.

zuko: zvtara, because 1. their relationship is more compelling to me if i read them as siblings, 2. they're so similar in ways i think would not be conducive to a healthy relationship, and 3. zuko gay. & maik0, because imo their romance is super compelling precisely because they're both gay and not good for each other, and how their relationship therefore showcases the fire nation's repressive nature and mai and zuko's responses to it.

zuko: god there are so many to choose from... i'm gonna go with katara for now. i love their relationships so so much. siblings, besties, the ultimate straight-girl-and-her-gbf (with the same taste in guys...) friendship.

sokka: i'm gonna go with katara for this one too! they are truly the best siblings ever, individually and as a set.

the position they sleep in

ok we're #LittleSpoonSokkaBigSpoonZuko truthers on this blog but beyond that, i think the way that sokka sleeps all sprawled out in “the puppetmaster” is so funny

a headcanon that is popular in the fandom but that i disagree with

how could i choose just one but:

zuko: that he's “the responsible one” whether that's in the gaang or in his relationship with sokka. like this isn't so much a headcanon as it is a complete misreading of his character but uuuugh it annoys me so much

sokka: that he becomes an ambassador to the fire nation... like there are so many things he would do that are not that. he should travel, go to university, become a pai sho master, invent new scientific fields, write poetry, and yes, he would help zuko (and katara) with their jobs leading nations. but often “ambassador sokka” is just a more polite sounding way of saying “prince consort sokka” which is. disgusting & racist

a crossover au i’d love to see them in

the first thing that comes to mind is this..... idk if “inside joke” is even the right term for it, it's too convoluted for that.. that an irl friend and i have about zuko & sokka as ryan & chad in high school musical 2. like their characters aren't even that similar but. it's a whole thing that this friend and i have spent several hours of our lives talking about.

Onto the event

Early morning, what a joke, Sokka was enjoying some sweet dreams, what about, he doesn't remember, but they were sweet. They had to be because being woken up by the Avatar's arrival trumpet was most certainly not. "Can they be any louder?"

"I don't know, probably... Want me to put in a request?" Katara asked from the Vanity where she sat applying the last touches to her ceremony makeup, she'll adorn herself with a few jewels the avatar sent her before she goes out to meet him.

"har har. No, what I want is for you to be able to choose whether or not to marry him... I mean it's weird to marry for politics right?" He fumbled out of bed and threw on his ceremony garb, carefully of course.

Bam! Katara let out a frustrated sigh and lifted her first from the Vanity shaking off the blunt pain "Sokka, it's not for politics, just so you know Aang and I have been corresponding since we were young, you were just too annoying to want to join in."

"corresponding? Just say you've known him for a long time and send letters and stuff" he patted her back "you sound like a stickler"

"hah, I guess... But I mean I am a princess"

"and a warrior! Be brash, be rude, have tude!"

"ohhh I have tude!"

"do you? Cuz I'm not hearing it!!"

Katara sighed "alright well, maybe not as much as you, but you are a prince as much as you're a warrior, you should hold yourself with more respect. Be nice, and quit taking naps! It's almost mid day!"

"ew less naps?" Yeah... It is a lot brighter than early morning.. eh, early enough to be gross.

"Princess, the Avatar requests you and Prince Sokka." Bato called from the other side. His official title was consort, but he was truthfully seen as equal to both Hakoda and Kya affection wise. There just wasn't any other title to give him.

"yes Bato, we'll be out in five minutes" Katara glared at Sokka "be good Aang will be your brother in law. Make merry and don't threaten him with your boomerang"

"yeah yeah, sure" absolutely not.

What do you see the male version of Fire Lady as? In Gladiator it’s always described as “Fire Lord Azula,” so what would Sokka be? Would there be a whole new title or do you see it as a situation like Britain and he’d be Prince Sokka?

I think I’ve talked about it here and there, his official title would most likely be Prince or Fire Consort or so. Sounds fancy enough, I hope! xD

... Though Azula would still call him Fire Lady to troll him. Just sayin’ xD

Four years after the passing of Sozin's Comet and the end of the war, Zuko's continuously bombarded with reminders that he needs to marry soon, and his advisors would rather he marry a foriegn royal. They claim it's in the interest of unity and diplomacy, but after the Siege of the North, it seems like the only royal family left is the Earth Kingdom, who happens to be the recipients of the largest portion of the Fire Nation's reparation. It's painfully clear they just want to lessen the "senseless" economic drain. But Zuko's stuck under their thumb, they've issue an ultimatum that they won't move forward with any other projects until there is a Fire Consort to "run the house". He'd long been resigned to the fact that love wouldn't be a factor in his marriage, but when it's revealed that prior to the Siege of the North Sokka married Yue, and became a prince himself, the Something More he'd kept buried for their whole friendship bubbles up into stupid hope.
