the long way to a small, angry planet - becky chambers
my playlist
final thoughts:
YESSSSSS
if you like sci-fi and found family. please fucking read this book. it was so fun and full of heart and love, with an ensemble crew and found family dynamic that takes what firefly did and fucking ran with it. im gonna be thinking about this book for a really long time to come.
loved how this author wrote a multi-species crew, loved the world building (galaxy building?) and seriously the naturalness of the crew interacting, occasional friction, external conflict and how they react to it, etc.... fucking sublime. my very favorite scenes were often post-stressful-thing where they talk to each other afterwards, because all the characters have slightly different communication styles and just absolutely incredibly telegraphed voices and it was just so perfect. (i loved all the characters but kizzy was my favorite.)
the stops they make along the way, the trouble they get into, the joy and the grief, all feel so honest to the setting and the characters. really i dont know what im going to do having finished this one lol i want more!!
EDIT: JUST DISCOVERED THERE ARE MORE. they all look to center on characters other than the ones you get to know on the wayfarer, the main ship in this book, but theyre all set in the same universe and im going to eat these books up 100%

Pride Month Book Recommendation: The House in the Cerulean Sea by T.J. Klune The House in the Cerulean Sea by T.J. Klune is a heartwarming contemporary queer fantasy novel. The story follows forty-year old Linus Baker, a Case Worker in the Department in Charge Of Magical Youth, responsible for overseeing the well-being of magical children in government-sanctioned orphanages. His assumptions about the world he lives in and the system he works for get tested when he is tasked with visiting the mysterious Marsyas Island Orphanage, where six magical children reside who have been deemed “dangerous” by the authorities. His department wants him to assess the children in this last resort home and their charming but mysterious and secretive caretaker Arthur Paranassus, and decide its future. The story is set in a world where magical beings and non-magical humans coexist, though as the story progresses, the nature of that coexistence becomes increasingly suspect. Magical and non-magical people live largely segregated lives, with magical orphans in particular being heavily monitored well into adulthood by a fearful and prejudiced human majoritarian state. What makes the otherwise by-the-book character of Linus stand out is his capacity for radical empathy for those who are different and vulnerable, and it is precisely this radical empathy that is offered as the antidote to hatred and prejudice. The true strength of this beautifully crafted story of finding belonging in an unlikely place, however, is in its insistence that it is not enough to have empathy alone. For love, empathy and acceptance to be meaningful, one has to stand up for those values and for the people who are targeted by the hate and prejudice in their absence. #pridemonth #pridemonthbooks #pridemonth2021 #pride #bookyoursummer #bookstagram #bookrecommendations #bookstagrammer #booklover #booklove #bookpride #bookreview #thehouseintheceruleansea #tjklune #book #fantasy #queerfantasy #bestbooks #queerlit #diversityinbooks #pridemonth🌈 https://www.instagram.com/p/CQFCXnrjGZe/?utm_medium=tumblr

Annie On My Mind was written by Nancy Garden.  It was published in 1982 and has never been out of print. The story follows Liza though her discovering herself and falling in love with her friend Annie.
I really am at a loss for words on this one.  It was something I just really felt I could relate to in a lot of ways.  If only I had found this book when I was younger.  I do wish it had more, I don’t know, substance.  I could have read another hundred pages of this.
4/5 stars; book is #ownvoices (Garden was a lesbian) and does contain homophobia but not more than necessary to tell the story

“You knew?”  “Oh my God. Yeah, of course I knew. You are twenty years old and you have never had a boyfriend.”  “That has nothing to do with my sexuality. Some people never date boys or people from other genders but are still attracted to them. There are lesbians who date boys before understanding the roles that heteronormativity tries to force them into.”

Pride Month Book Tag
@thebookworminme @PrideBooks @BibliophileRT @bookbloggershub #freemomhugs #LGBT+ #LGBTQIA #pridemonth #happypridemonth #pridemonthbooks
Happy Pride Month! While looking for a book tag that would be appropriate for Pride Month, I found a great book tag on Cody Levi’s blog The Bookworm in Me. Since participating in the Book Riot Read Harder Challenges, I have read more books with LGBT+ characters or by LGBT+ authors. So I am proud of expanding my horizons in this way. No regrets. Everyone is welcome to participate in the book…

How can I make you go read a book? This is a question I am constantly asking myself, because some books are so good you just HAVE to share. The First Sister by @lindenalewis is one of those books, I want to stalk people in the bookstore and drop it into their carts, or just jump up and down and scream, “HEY! IM NOT A WEIRDO YOU JUST NEED TO READ THIS!” *spoiler alert, I am a weirdo* This space opera features multiple POVs, all kinds of representation, and has a very Handmaid’s Tale in space feel. I’m so in love, I’ve already preordered the sequel. And BONUS! It’s on sale today in the Amazon B2G1 50% off sale (check my stories for the link.) If you read it, and I desperately want you to, please come back and talk to me about it!!! #tattooedbibliophile #ilovebooks #booknerd #bookworm #bookaholic #bookmail #bookish #bookstagram #bookworm #booklover #books #bibliophile #bookaddict #bookstagrammer #bookaholic #booklove #bookphotography #igreads #reader #bookblogger #instabooks #readersofinstagram #bookobsessed #bookdragon #tbr #rainbowbooks #thefirstsister #lgbtqiabooks #pridemonthbooks https://www.instagram.com/p/CQbZYImrEtb/?utm_medium=tumblr

☀️ I GOT A TEXT ☀️ For all my Love Island stans, no I don’t have a hot date on a beach in Spain, but, arguably even better, I’ve finally gotten the go ahead to book a vaccine appointment!! I’m so excited to finally have some peace of mind and to feel like I can more confidently enjoy the easing of our lockdown 😍 I have to say, I’m a little nervous - I’ve never NOT had a panic attack when getting a jab 💀 - but I’m lucky to have the opportunity and will be getting it done asap!! Has anyone else had the vaccine? Do you have any advice or encouragement?! Anything to calm my anxiety would be much appreciated 🙊 ☀️☀️☀️ In other news, today is apparently the last day of our mini-heatwave (hopefully it’ll start up again later next week!), so of course I had to take advantage of it and get some summer shots!! I used my @illumicrate copy of A Dark and Hollow Star by @paper.ashley and I seriously can’t wait to give this one a read!! @anaisthebibliophile’s recent post and love of the characters really got me hyped up to read it - and I know my girls never wrong - so it’s definitely near the top of my list!!! ☀️☀️☀️ QOTD: Have you read any LGBTQ books for #pridemonth this month? What’s been your favourite so far?! ☀️☀️☀️ AOTD: Unfortunately, working through my KU library has completely derailed my planned reading for this month, but I still have a couple weeks and wanna get some read before the end of the month!! I’ll definitely be taking notes on your recommendations below to get the perfect reading order 🤩 ☀️☀️☀️ • • • #lgbtq #lgbtqbooks #summerreads #junereads #junetbr #pridemonthbooks #lgbtreadinglist #blblclub2001 #blblclub2021 #bestlifebooklife #tbpfeatures #mybookfeatures #mybookfeature #thebookieshub #bookworms #bookworm #readersunite #readersunited #readersofinstagram #readersofig #bookwormsofinstagram #bookwormsofig #reading #readingcorner #readingcommunity #bookstagram #bookstagrammer #bookstagramfeature #bookstagramcommunity https://www.instagram.com/p/CQMNK2mLj-v/?utm_medium=tumblr

Werbung // vom. Bloggerportal erhalten. I'm a supporter. #loveislovelove, #loveisloveisloveisloveislove, #loveislove💕, #loveislove🌈💕, #loveislove🌈❤️, #blacklivesmatter❤️ #blacklivesmattergermany, #blacklivesmatter✊🏾, #pridemonthsaree, #pridemonthbooks, #pridemonth_artcall, #pridemonthedits, #pridemonthedit, #blmlosangeles, #blm❤️, #blm✊🏽✊🏾✊🏿, #blmlondon, #spreadlove, #lovewhatyoudo, #lovecats, #lovepuppies, #love, #bookaholic, #bookseries, #bookreviewer, #bookobsessed, #bookblogger https://www.instagram.com/p/CBksFgtAI5V/?igshid=zkjupl9c726k

detransition, baby - torrey peters
final thoughts:
ill be real, this one is really hard for me to process and produce words about. it was incredible, and reading it really hit home that i need to read more books with trans protagonists, but past that its just too many emotions to fully express here. just going to put down a few things that i really loved about this book, without dredging up too many of my own feelings (esp since im writing this at work lmaooo).
i loved all three of the main characters in the book. they each felt so raw and real throughout. each of them being so different, and watching them try to figure each other out was so overwhelmingly emotional i could barely look away. i dont know. this is definitely a book im going to come back to again and find entirely new things to love about it, yknow? see it with fresh eyes and new life experience and whatnot. especially considering my own conceptualization of potential trans parenthood is still very much in its infancy (im WAY too young to be delving into that yet), i can definitely see myself coming at this book differently in five to ten years.

Don’t you think we need more books with ace rep? Then you should check out THAW by Elyse Springer, an #ownvoices contemporary f/f romance with a biromantic asexual MC. . Please, tell me about good books that have a MC on the ace spectrum because I’ve only read a few. . #BBSJuneChallenge — Underrated LGBTQIAP+ books #TheBookBoundSociety #pridemonthbooks #ownvociesrepost

Okay I just gotta put this book out there for the millionth time: This book is phenomenal. It helped me so much in a time where I was so unsure. This book was kinda the first lesbian story I had ever read and it was absolutely astounding. It helped me come to terms with a lot of stuff involving my sexuality and had held a special place in my heart since I first read it. This. Book. Is. So. Important. The more I read it, the more amazed I am by it. My obsession has grown way too much and I am so in love with this book.

I binge read Ice Massacre in a couple days.  I’m a slow reader, so this is quite the feat.  I LOVED THIS BOOK.  I have no excuse about why I haven’t read the second book Ice Crypt...well, yes, I do.  It’s a trilogy and the third book is still upcoming.  These characters are easy to love, hate, pity, and fear.  These mermaids are not the sweet creatures we’ve been handed for ages.  These mermaids are beast-mode badasses, a force to be reckoned with.  The book is violent, gory, glorious.  After generations of sending 18 year old boys to kill as many mermaids as possible while trying to resist mermaid allure, the islanders decide to send girls instead.  They didn’t expect the lesbians.
5/5 would recommend, content warnings: violence in a fantasy setting, violence in a war setting, gore, death of multiple characters
