If you’re familiar with the VICE TV series “Dark Side of the Ring” covering some of the darker backstage stories in pro-wrestling history, VICE is making one for MMA. Not sure if it’s the same people (don’t believe so).
It premiers later tonight with the story of Kimbo Slice and an investigation into his death. Im curious about how the story will be framed, who they talked to, and what the ultimately fall on in terms of ‘blame’. I’ve been highly critical of the state of Texas myself since before the fight was made but we’ll see what comes up.
There’s a lot of stuff I’m disappointed didn’t show up on the show, but I get it. You only have to much of a budget, access, and so much time. And I don’t know who they tried to talk to and couldn’t get a hold of, ya know. Off the top of my head, would have loved to have seen Spencer Fisher on the show. Read his story if you’d like to know why. It’ll break your heart.
Would have loved to have seen stuff regarding the number of weight cutting deaths the sport has seen. PED use. Anything regarding the UFC lawsuit and the stories that came out of that (though the turnaround on that would probably be too much given when this is debuting). Just a whole bunch of things that would be worth exploring in this format.

Gerald Ford vs. Teddy Roosevelt, no holds barred MMA fight. Who wins?
Despite his portrayal as a clumsy oaf, Gerald Ford was almost certainly the best athlete to ever serve in the White House. He was a legendary college football player who won two national championships at the University of Michigan, and was MVP of the team in his senior year. Ford turned down contract offers from the Detroit Lions and the Green Bay Packers, but turned down a career in the NFL in order to attend law school. Ford was a avid skier until his 80s and continued swimming regularly for exercise into his 90s, and he would have had a notable size advantage over Theodore Roosevelt.
However, if someone genuinely knows what they are doing during a mixed martial arts fight, they are going to be very difficult to defeat -- even against an opponent who might be a superior athlete in every other sense. That has been a lesson learned throughout the growth of MMA as a mainstream sport dating back to Royce Gracie easily handling much bigger opponents in the early UFC with his Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. Or Rickson Gracie calmly controlling and systematically dominating literally everyone he fought in Japan, no matter who Pride FC threw at him.
Theodore Roosevelt would be giving up quite a bit of size and athletic ability against Gerald Ford, but TR was an early student of martial arts. As President -- in the White House itself -- Roosevelt kept active with wrestling (always the best foundation for a mixed martial artist) and boxing. And he was among the first Americans to actually train in jiu jitsu and judo, receiving lessons directly from the legendary Yamashita Yoshiaki. Because of that experience, I think Theodore Roosevelt probably would have given any of his fellow Presidents a rough day at the office if they had an MMA fight, no matter how big or strong or athletic his opponent might be.

Igor Vovchanchyn Highlights
By: Lewis
It's always kind of funny when people bring up Fedor being an undersized heavyweight. He was, but he wasn't a small man. He was like 6'0, 220-ish lbs. Not big by heavyweight standards, but not tiny.
You know who was tiny? Igor Vovchanchyn. A former kickboxer turned no holds barred/MMA fighter in 1995, Igor stood at only 5'8. By modern standards, I'm pretty sure Vovchanchyn is a welterweight. Maybe even a 155lber. But back in the mid to late 90s up to the early 2000s, he was the scariest puncher in the sport. This tiny Ukrainian man was knocking out guys who were coming into fights at over 300lbs. Sometimes, as many as 3 in a single night (IFC 1: Kombat in Kyiv - John Dixson, Paul Varelans, and Fred Floyd). Absolutely terrifying human being.
If you'd like to learn a bit more about the guy, check out this article from The Fight Site.

Jeff Molina is a rising star in the MMA world, but there's more to Jeff than just his skills in the octagon. 🥊 Did you know that Jeff is proudly bi? 🌈 Yep, he's breaking barriers and kicking butt, both inside and outside the ring. 💪 #MarchMadness

i have been thinking about (this post) since i posted it and i just feel compelled to say. she is a capable fighter, and definitely she can hold her own against a variety of opponents. however i also think there's like... there is this general vibe in most fighting-centric inspo posts about overpowering opponents. and i think that's not her thing at all. i mean sure if they're just markedly not up to scratch then of course she's got the upper hand in terms of overpowering someone but i mean. if you put her opposite a real sturdy, heavy hitter, there's no way she's winning in a direct contest of power and strength. she definitely leans more for unbalancing her opponents, whether that be in a literal physical sense or more psychological sense. i think, in a situation like in that set, it's not that she's stronger, it's that she had some sort of trick up her sleeve, you know? which also takes strength, she's not weak, it's just not what her fighting style centers on.
