I'm not a huge Pratchett fan, but part of the reason that quote works for me is specifically because it's not purely literal. Calling mercy and justice not just difficult but a lie emphasizes how difficult it is to make the not physical true. If you're getting pushback, it's because you're not just saying "nah, I don't like this," but that it's stupid and everybody should be able to see that it's stupid, with what sounds to me like the strong implication (cont'd)

Ah, okay. I think that’s precisely why I don’t like it. “Justice and mercy and all the rest are too hard” is how I feel when I’m depressed and drained. “Justice and mercy are things all of us who really give a damn are doing all the time, isn’t that kind of wonderful?” is how I feel when I have hope.

Which is why I don’t like Pratchett I think. The tone just makes me feel like he’s talking down to everyone all the time. I don’t think that’s the vibe most people get, but… that just explains pretty well why they like it and I’m ambivalent. If it doesn’t rub them that way why would they not like it?

People are going to like that quote whatever I say or do. That doesn’t matter.

The annoying thing is the people who think me not liking it means I don’t understand it and explaining over and over what a social construct is, completely polevaulting over my point, which is that goodness is as normal as evil is.

It’s the same thing that makes me not a huge fan of Vonnegut. It’s not that they’re not good writers or that their cynicism makes them bad people. They’re good people! They just have this weirdly relentless way of depicting anything honestly good about people like it requires massive effort, when most small good deeds… don’t?

My sister's being insufferable again...

Posted the evil-wizard shared in philosophy class post about resolving apparent philosophical paradoxi by coining specific language to discuss the crux of them succinctly, coining the terms tribbler, quonk, splornk, and glibbitytoop as examples to resolve thesius's ship and and lonely treefall paradoxes, you know, this image:

And she's like: "Here's an actual paradox. The pole in the barn."

Me: No, that's pretty resolvable wit the correct language.

She: Do you know what the pole in barn paradox is?

Me: Yes, I literally just watched a video about it before opening my mouth

She: Okay, then you should know the point of it is to show how... Unintuitive GR is rather than being unresolvable

Like, 'the point' of the paradox is not what you asked about, but also beside the fact of the discussion, and also proves the fukkin' point being had: The paradox would be a lot more easily explained with language explain that from the the barn watcher asceptic frame of reference, the pole vaulter is diffig, and the barn is shoroht. Asceptic means that the frame of reference sees two objects, one of which is apparently moving (diffig) and the other of which is apparently static (shoroht).

Diffig and Shoroht objects have with the same revelativistic properties express those properties in specific ways from each the other's frame of reference. The polevaulter sees the doors close at different times because she is diffig, while the barn watcher sees the polevaulter become compressed enough to fit between the doors as they close simultaniously because the barn is shoroht. Paradox resolved.

I point this out, and my sister's all like,

She: A paradox in physics is meant to showcase how unintuitive something is for the human mind

Me: In which case, you are using the word in a difference sense than what is being discussed and should be considered seporately as irrelevant to the philosophical paradoxi that this discussion is about.

Hello. I always wanted to ask how the boys keep their buffed body shape. Brian has gorgeous upper arms and John is so well build too. Do they visit the gym and train together? Do they have a gym corner at home?

Hi, anon! 👋

John is actually a pro-fighter (discipline: Muay Thai) and he's being doing MT since he was at least 7 years old. He has a lot of regiments geared towards gaining/losing weight (depending on what weight class he is in, ranging from Middleweight to Light Heavyweight), sparring and heavy sparring.

Brian did track and field (javelin + polevault), cross country, and fencing in HS. And being an ER nurse, he is often tasked to do some lifting (patients, equipment, etc) -- lot of times people don't expect much out of him because he doesn't look that "built." He doesn't run as much as he used to, but it's very helpful with his job.

with John, he trains at his uncle's gym when he's getting ready for a match but he does run with Brian because he's literally the only person to make that bearable... even though Brian's tough on him.

They do have a little gym in the basement -- a heavy punching bag, treadmill, a cable machine and I think some weights. It's pretty simple but it gets the job done.

i finally got my tenth villager in my new town, so here’s a little unorganized background on each of them:

my first villagers to move with me on the island were plucky and poncho, who are surprisingly very fitting friends! 

plucky to me has ‘lunch lady who tells you to grab a fruit and calls you baby’ vibes, and i love her! she’s very motherly and always naruto runs around poncho’s house for no particular reason. i love her light blue hair (headfeathers?) and think she’s very cute. she loves to flex her muumuu on a daily basis. if i decide to keep her, i’d love to make a little tiki bar to remind her of home, since she was originally a gamecube islander! overall: 8/10; plucky is my favorite chicken!

poncho is a bear that i never really considered to be anything special, but he’s growing on me HARD-- i think he’s one of the cutest jocks out there, and his blue coloring is so rich and nice to look at? he reminds me of one of my favorite animated shorts, bongo from fun and fancy free that i used to watch RELIGIOUSLY as a kid. poncho is always crafting diys, and i placed a barbell outside his house to honor that. poncho and plucky are very good friends, and he always works out in the plaza. another Poncho Specific Thing that he does is SITTING ON THINGS..... poncho sits on jeremiah’s swinging bench and all the stumps i forget to dig up all the time. overall: 9/10; love poncho!! i would love to have cheri in my town too if my ocd doesn’t act up.

my next three move ins were from the mystery islands! 

jeremiah was a villager i got on my second nmt and i talked to him, polevaulted around a bit pondering if i should take him, and finally ended up asking him to move in. i’m so glad i did!!! he’s so adorable, and compliments my player constantly. his house is so pretty, and i think his catchphrase is too cute (nee-deep!). i like jeremiah a lot, and he’s here to stay for now. :> overall: 10/10; excellent frog. 

merengue is next! when i found her, i audibly gasped because she’s too fucking cute. my irl friend and i both love merengue, and i’m glad she’s living on my island! she doesn’t seem that talkative and mostly keeps to herself, which is fine. i wish she’d open up a little more to me though! i think she’s one of the cutest villagers out there, and definitely my favorite rhino. overall: 9/10; merengue is adorable and i will refrain from eating her hair.

the last of the three is twiggy, who is a very sentimental villager to me. she was in my first ever animal crossing town when i was a kid, and she was one of my best friends along with buck, caroline, portia and kidd. twiggy was a no-brainer to pick up, and i gave her a little birdbath to decorate her house with. twiggy’s favorite activities are yoga and naruto running in the plaza with plucky. i hope twiggy will stay for a while on my island! overall: 9/10; love twiggy!!!!!!

my next villager i hate with a passion and i’m bitter that he forced his way into my town. klaus is an asshole who walks around with a donut every day and i can’t wait until this entitled asshole moves out. everything about him is stupid and pretentious!! overall: -15/10; hate klaus. he will be evicted!!!!

after klaus, i went islandhopping again to find a snooty or cranky villager. instead, i found THE BEST SHEEP IN THE GAME, MUFFY!!! i have ALWAYS wanted muffy even as a little kid, and i finally have her!! muffy’s favorite activities are sniffing red roses and losing items around town. i’ve already returned her book and purse to her ;; overall: 10/10; ADORE muffy.

i was on a call with my boyfriend when i found zell, and i had literally just said “i want either raymond, marshal or zell.” AND THERE ZELL WAS!!! zell lives next to a rock that is the money rock 99% of the time, and he’s usually always in his house. i think he and muffy are good friends, and bond over their goth solidarity. overall: 10/10; meeting zell was fate and he will stay for a long time.

yesterday night i found claudia, who perfectly fit my snooty criteria! i love her because she reminds me of the pink panther, and i love her twinkly eyes and beauty mark. i’m excited to see how she’ll fit the nevermind dynamic. overall: 9/10; claudia has so much potential!

and finally to cap things off, i just received bonbon for free off of r/acvillager from a very kind person. her house is ADORABLE and bonbon looks so good in new horizons. i’ve never had her, so i’m excited to see her interactions with twiggy and the gang! i’d really like to draw her as well. overall: ?/10; she’s on her way to nevermind!

Lucki’s Log - Day 2

My house is built! The pink roof looks excellent.

And today, I had a lot of business to worry about. I met with our new museum curator, Blathers, in his tent, and he told me I had to find FIFTEEN more new creatures to donate to the museum before it could be built. I mean, I understand you can’t have an empty museum, but that’s quite a bit isn’t it?

He also said that fossils counted, and that I could probably find some across the river. Which meant it was time to get really good at polevaulting...

After I built my vaulting pole, Mr. Nook and Timmy mentioned wanting to build a shop. So...there were even more materials to collect! Am I in over my head?

The more I ran around trying to collect things, however, the more my Nook miles racked up. I couldn’t do anything without my new Nook Phone buzzing! But...it turns out I can trade them for some pretty cool stuff, including tickets to other islands.

I spent so much time island hopping, meeting new people, and gathering supplies. Before I knew it, I not only had enough for Blathers’ museum and Timmy’s shop, but I had nearly every fruit planted on my island!

And! I even found some time to design something new. I made myself a cute dress and a snazzy new hat, along with some pink PJs.

Today was so busy! But...so successful. And satisfying.

I'm going to poke at the Grimm knight =3

I think the general conceit for that one was either that the Knight would either spend their entire life being raised by the Troupe and eventually break their own limits and grow in a way that suited them (hence the adult form) to serve as a guardian/attendant

OR they’re raised by the Troupe to a certain point, and then they express the desire to return to Hallownest and save their sibling, so it’s an alternative start to the game (and probably an alternate end, because they’ve been permanently altered by being allowed into the Troupe and are no longer an ‘’’empty’’’ vessel, so becoming the next vessel is locked to them). I imagine they’d start from Dirtmouth as if the Troupe DLC was always active and just sort of weird people out a bit by happily wandering in and out of the tents to talk to uncle Grimm and his musician boyfriend and aunt Divine who probably teaches them combat techniques occasionally.

They can do new things like teleport and throw fireballs and use their staff to polevault. Maybe after a certain point Grimmchild comes along with them?

Anyway yeah they’d be pretty spooky in their own way, even more than usual, since with Grimm they were actually socialized and learned how to interact with other bugs but also like…it’s Grimm and he’s super extra and they, too, are super extra. They’d probably be a more active participant in conversations by body language/be able to communicate through sign language with limited success (depending on who knows sign language in hallownest).

How could you not love them?! Nicolas was far from the most physically fit racer in the history of the show, but he carried his own weight and his grandfather’s weight with ease without ever complaining. Nicolas had no subtlety and no social game in the airports and it was hilarious to watchĪt the end of the day though, they’re just a grandfather and grandson traveling around the world together who somehow defied everyone’s expectations and made it to the final leg. Then when they were trying to book a flight to Lithuania and Nicolas told the airline workers not to help the other teams when everyone was literally standing right there and overheard them which caused Hendekea to call him out and pretty much push him out of the way to get a better flight before him. There was the flight to Lithuania where Nicolas pissed off the airline worker which caused Ron to completely blow up on him for his behavior and Christina subtly trying to tell Nicolas to stop being a dick. You all know I love a good flight scrambler and Nicolas brought the drama to the airports with his terrible social game. I also enjoyed him when there were less teams and they were forced to show them more and it turned out that Donald was actually really funny! He deserved a bigger edit throughout the show and more lines. Don’s highlight of the season was definitely his performance in the polevault roadblock in the Netherlands he did in his underwear. Don was exhausted by the end of the season and pretty much tried to sleep or relax whenever possible while Nicolas worked his hardest to try to keep them alive (both literally and metaphorically). And with like five near eliminations throughout the race, they also served bottomgoddess realness which I always adoreĭonald was the grandfather who was also a potty mouth. Though they had one of the smaller edits throughout the season, I enjoyed them whenever they were shown. Nicolas & Donald were the comic relief team of the season, but they also brought the drama and some heart along the way. You expect the final three to include Lorena & Jason or Azaria & Hendekea, but instead this random old grandfather Donald crawled his way to the final three. The TAR 12 final three is legit one of the most random final threes ever, but that’s why I enjoy the season so much. I’m incredibly proud of what my sisterĪnd I accomplished, but we didn’t do it on our own.Nicolas & Donald are third boots who somehow snuck by all the way to the final three. The entire race was a humbling experience, and winning it even more so. She’s just one of those gals who REALLY deserves more than I can give. Add the fact that I have a girlfriend who I wish to make MORE than my girlfriend, so I’m fully aware that I need to be Stretch a dollar to pay my absurd New York rent and eat absurdly priced New York food. The salary is not exactly illustrious, and I’ve truly had to learn how far I can I’ve been humbled by working Off Broadway for two years now. Give me Rodgers and Hammerstein over “American Idol” any day.Īs far as the money going to my head… Not a chance. The show is a brilliant piece of work and I love singing the music. “The Fantasticks” is very dear to my heart – I got my equity card with it, it was my first New York gig, and it introduced me (through the late Bobby Oliver) to theĪmazing kindness my fellow actors can have for someone they’ve only worked with for a short while.

Try to remember the kind of December when you were watching the finale of the CBS reality series “The Amazing Race,” and thought one of its champions looked familiar: sure enough, Nick Spangler, who wasĪ winner of the show’s $1 million prize on Sunday night, is a star of the current Off-Broadway production of “The Fantasticks,” in which he plays Matt. 48. surgery: I had surgery on my femur bone when I was ten because they were turned inward which made my feet turn inward when I walked. It sounds like nothing but it’s really unflattering. I want to get lasik surgery in two years for my deteriorating eyesight.
