Part of why The Woman (2011) feels so fucked up is because everything about how it's filmed and staged reminds you of The Wonder Years or a similar "It was the last summer of high school and it changed us all" style of sunset and nostalgia drenched dramatic comedy; but it's a movie about a Nice Family that traps a feral woman and imprisons her in the cellar and it features horrific forms of assault along with child abuse and spousal abuse. At any moment you expect to hear Daniel Stern's voice-over like, "I didn't know it back then, but watching my dad shove a bowl of oatmeal to a naked and filthy chained up woman was one of those moments that brought us closer together." The soundtrack, the color palette, it's got to be on purpose.
