EDIT: How do we show appreciation to the volunteers? For me reading these deep dives on OTW issues u guys apparently it's been said multiple times that one of their objective statements is to have paid staff for ao3 and there's a surplus of donations they haven't used up or the other community solutions that needs to address. For those more financially literate feel free to analyze, snipe me or add to the discussion etc. linked here by deepa. They’re cool and these yearly analysis they did aint no joke.

This is the week of unseen gems! My goode friends on Twitter (see credits below) shared this lovely interview of Matthew for Vogue in 2021, with a gorgeous photograph by Paul Wetherell.

Here are all the quotes for those who need a translation:

Interviewer:

If you haven't heard, otw (in other words ao3) have forced a volunteer to resign because they had "from the river to the sea, Palestine will be free" as their status on messaging platfrom slack, which otw use for communications.

They were denying that Israel is an apartheid settler state or that the genocide in Gaza is even happening.

This is unforgivable in my opinion, and I have sent a message to otw through their official contact form here, and I suggest you do the same. Below you'll see my message as well, in case you want to copy and paste, or just use it as a template of sorts.

I urge you also not to donate to otw anymore, unless the zionist volunteers and members of otw are removed from their positions and banned from otw.

"I am disgusted and enraged about the treatment of otw volunteer bjorn due to their pro-Palestine message status on slack, and even more so about the fact that zionists are allowed to run free amongst otw/ao3 volunteers, claiming that what Israel is doing in Gaza is not genocide, and claiming that Israel is not an apartheid settler state. As a person who has donated to the otw many times i wish I could revoke my money. But also as a donor I as well as many others demand the otw to resign fully, ban all zionist volunteers, have a written apology to bjorn and all users repudiating zionist actions in Gaza, donate to the Red Crescent to support Palestine, and reinstate bjorn as volunteer. Well, you can! And it's simple! (* Note: it only works for comments written after you turn this on.)

Go to your Preferences:

There's a checkbox labelled "Turn off copies of your own comments". This is selected by default. If you deselect it (and save your preferences) then you receive an email for every comment you leave.

But I don't want to get my inbox flooded by Ao3!

Understandable! Luckily, most email clients allow you to set up rules for incoming mail depending on their sender and contents. For instance (using Gmail), I've made it so that these emails skip the inbox, are marked as read, and moved to a label I call my "Comment Collection".

The result? A complete, organised and fully-searchable repository of any comments you leave from this point onwards! Search by fic name, author, date, that one sentence you vividly remember leaving!

I've set up other rules, too, like starring emails that are replies to my comments - I'm always excited to receive them!

I love this system, and I think it's motivated me to leave more comments. I hope that others find it useful too. Happy commenting!

Is it silly for men to dress well?

WORLD: For many of your roles you slip into a classic suit. The characters you portray are often set in a historical time - how can elegant men's wardrobe become more modern.

Matthew Goode: The nice thing about suits is that they give you a different attitude. When I wear a suit with a white tie and tailcoat, my upper body automatically straightens and I move differently. It makes me feel like I'm in an old portrait in the National Gallery in London, which is very useful for developing my characters. Today's youth have become brave. Timothée Chalamet, for example, wears a suit without a shirt underneath and with a bare upper body on the red carpet. I always think, "My God, that's brave, especially in March." Still, I wouldn't predict the end of the classic suit just yet. Goode: During awards season, this can happen for seven days at a time. But I'm a father of three, and when I'm not working I spend most of my time as a glorified taxi operator or dog walker. So I dress more practically during the week.

WORLD: What does a practically dressed Matthew Goode look like?

Goode: I look like I'm ready for all seasons because I live in England. If I know it's going to be windy, rainy and stormy, I would probably wear ski gear (laughs). Otherwise, I'm a fan of corduroy pants and a nice tweed jacket. I was born in the country, I remain a country bumpkin at heart.

WORLD: Do you wear shorts in summer?

Goode: I'm actually wearing one right now because I had a meniscus repair and because of the huge splint I haven't been able to wear long pants for the past few months.

WORLD: What makes a good suit for you?

Goode: I pay particular attention to the quality of the fabric – and the cut. Suits I bought 20 years ago look boxy. Today they are more tailored to the body. Or I play with the lining of the jacket and the underside of the collar, perhaps with a bolder color. It's the way my wife - she's an interior designer - would design the house: nice, conservative colors and then pops of color through pillows. So my socks could be flashy, but everything else could be reserved. A good tailor can then see how the suit can make even more use of the body shape, for example with shoulder pads it looks like I've been to the gym.

WORLD: A tie with a suit – still mandatory today or already dispensable?

Goode: I still need to build up the confidence to wear scarves and bandanas the way Gilchrist does. Until then, I'll happily put on a tie.
