"I have a great [Vladimir] Putin story for you. I introduced Putin to Barney, my little Scottish terrier, and Putin dissed him. This is the stage where Putin looked like he was in Lethal Force 2; he had the black body shirt on. It kind of hurt my feelings, but I didn't let him know. So a year later we're at his dacha in Moscow. This is before he had discarded his wife of many years, Lyudmilla, for a water gymnast who was like 30 years younger than he is. And he said, 'Would you like to meet my dog?' I said yes. I'd forgotten about the Barney diss. And out bounds this huge Russian hound, loping across the birch-lined yard, and Putin looked at me and said 'Bigger, stronger, and faster than Barney.'
I told that to Canadian Prime Minister [Stephen] Harper. You may think he's kind of a droll guy, but he's not. He said, 'At least he only showed you his dog.' At any rate, the guy's got a huge chip on his shoulder. 'My dog's bigger than your dog' -- please.
And so you've got to ask why. The demise of the Soviet Union, in Putin's mind, diminished Russia in the eyes of history. What you're watching [in Ukraine] is him trying to reinstate Russian glory -- not Stalinist glory but Russian glory. And he's lost his balance. The guy needs to be stopped,, and the United States needs to hang with [Volodymyr] Zelensky no matter how tough it gets, because if we can't support a young democracy under attack by an autocrat, then we have a problem as a nation knowing what we're all about."
-- Former President George W. Bush, during an interview by David M. Rubenstein, September 19, 2023.

A Destruction of Mesopotamian History: The 2003 Looting of Iraq’s National Museum
Tumblr media
'Bush is criminal' mural in Al-Rashid hotel in Baghdad, commissioned by famous artist Layla Al Attar (ليلى العطار) in 1991.
Regardless of efforts to protect the museums and libraries of Iraq from being looted & destroyed, U.S. military successfully assigned men to chip away this mural of former President Bush on the floor of the Al Rashid Hotel. For days during the uprisings that occured subsequent to the first Gulf War, of 13 museums containing artefacts that ranged back to the dates of the mespotamian age, 9 were completely looted. Many of these stolen artefacts were discovered to being sold on the international black market.
Archaeologists in the United States consider the National Museum of Antiquities, thoroughly sacked, to be among the 10 most important museums in the world.
Examples of stolen artefacts:
a 4,300-year-old bronze mask of an Akkadian king - featured in most books of ancient art history
a small limestone statuette of a prince, circa 3300 B.C.
jewellry from the royal tombs of Ur dating to 2500 B.C.
a solid gold harp from the Sumerian era
a series of small ivories dating to the eighth century B.C.
second-century B.C. Parthian sculptures from Hatra
a collection of around 80,000 cuneiform tablets that contain examples of the some of the world’s earliest writing
To make matters worse, the Bush administration and his military presented this tragedy (their 'extensive looting' of the three major Iraqi cultural institutions in Baghdad) as a spontaneous, unforseeable operation. Where have we heard similar rhetoric? Their whole premise for the 2003 war on discovering so-called 'weapons of mass destruction.' It’s amazing how the US media perpetuates matters to desperately suggest that their actions are consistently justifiable, as after all, they are the ‘Land of the Free’ and the rest of us are in dire need of their support. This self-imposed moral obligation to establishing 'peace' and 'freedom' in Middle Eastern regimes falls nothing short of Western imperialism. Yet, what distinguishes this era of colonialism - more commonly understood under the definition of "neo-colonialism" - is that this intention is left somewhat vague, in other words, disguised. There is no direct claim that they are 'superior,' yet it is heavily implied through their rhetoric and the actions they’ve committed in destroying regimes that are seen as a threat to the hold that they (the White House) have globally.
The Bush administration’s claim that this looting was not 'foreseeable,' is an excuse rooted in cowardice. They had every right to suspect it - the uprisings in the first Gulf War saw looting from nine of the 13 regional museums. The Iraqi National Museum was included in the Pentagon's 'No Strike List' prior to the war. This was a massive loss for not just the Iraqi people, but for the world, for this museum contained artefacts dating back thousands of years.
Such tragedy informs - or rather, reminds - us of one thing: America's priorities have always remained the same. This example of 2003 simply reinforces it. They are driven by the classic imperial policy: divide and conquer. The only thing we can rest assured in is the tragic fact that the West will simply never change. This very geopolitical divide between the ‘West’ and ‘East’ is rooted in the mere desire to contain the power and resources of the East - we’ve seen it with the British in India, Iraq, Egypt; the Italians in Libiya; the French in Lebanon and Syria… the list goes on. What was once considered the hub of knowledge for the world became nothing but a place for power-hungry monarchs to quite simply, divide and conquer.

Dream last night -
President Bush was doing some sort of official visit or speech and afterwards he appeared outside on this sort of hilly lawn in the dusk. He talked to me about something then I said "what do you think about the war?"
He said "Israel-Palestine?" (Like. Of course what else would it be)
I said, "no, the war in Ukraine."
He was like, I don't know about that war. (Like, why should i? - implied)
I was a bit annoyed he didn't know about it as it is important.
He said, "well, there are 2 scenarios. Either the US and allies wants to win and drive the bad guys out, or we are looking for a way to end it, slowly withdraw so we don't have anything to do with it anymore."
I said, "well. The 2nd one probably. Because we can't get to putin. It is unlikely we can get that far. We won't want to go all the way. We can get to the leaders in Donetsk and Luhansk, but they're just putin's people he put in place. It takes too much effort to get to him."
He said, "you should go into foreign policy."
I was happy that I could get this boost from his recommendation and gain some connections rather than starting from the bottom and I could fulfill my dreams of going into foreign policy and affecting world events.

Afghanistan ~ Who's to Blame
The following is written by national, regional and state award-winning columnist and newspaper editor John Hourihan. On Sept. 11, 2001, terrorists attacked us. On Sept. 18, 2001, President Bush invaded Afghanistan. In 2002 the battle shifted to Iraq, under President Bush. Reconstruction began in Afghanistan. In 2003 Bush declared “Mission Accomplished.” In 2004 Karzai was elected president…

Check out Bush’s cat like reflexes. Impressive. He really dodged that shoe nicely! One of the few good things he did as president 😏

"SUCKING DEMOCRACY DRY" -- ONE OF THE GREAT POLEMIC PAINTINGS OF OUR TIME.
PIC(S) INFO: Part 2 of 2 -- Spotlight on what began as a convention exclusive, AlexRossArt.com and Mercury Comics present Alex Ross' Bush "Sucking Democracy Dry," originally used by "The Village Voice" in the fall of 2004. Artwork by the maestro, Alex Ross.
""So, what was the least subtle cover you ever did ?" Glad you asked! It's one that might also be the most subtle in an odd way.
Ah, Bush fatigue. Seems almost charming now. We'd been banging the drum on this endless beat of how much W sucked for what seemed like eternity, and the bludgeoning impact of weekly tabloid repetition was taking its toll on me, much less the overall readership. When there was a plan for yet another Bush-centric cover, I was actually at a loss. Particularly because this time around there wasn’t as solid of a story angle as we usually had, so it seemed more about feeding red meat to a base that was... probably doing okay in the protein department at that point.
So I decided to try something so ridiculously blunt and over-the-top it would cast a shadow over any similar tries for quite a while. It was the issue before Halloween. A plan came together. But in order for it really stick and not be shrugged off as just another political-cartoon grotesquerie it had to be rendered as beautifully as possible.
We had done one project before with Alex Ross, but this had a whole other layer of difficulty, since so many elements had to come together precisely. He delivered: The “hot” overhead lighting, the Bela-Lugosi-hand reference, the arc of Liberty's punctured neck, the fact that there are actually no visible fangs.
Subtle!"

What is Canadian Culture
February 7, 2024 During a lively discussion with friends, I asked: what is Canadian culture? After a surprising period of thoughtful quiet, someone suggested that Canada has musicians, authors, and artists who combine to define Canadian culture. But I said that many of these have made their career in the US. For example, Celine Dion, Joni Mitchell, and The Guess Who (Burton Cummings) have become…

I was a kid (granted a very curious one) when George W. Bush was president and I very clearly remember how everyone thought he was a menace to world peace, a fanatic conservative who started a period of war and ignorance. What do you think Green Day was ranting against in American Idiot. Even down here in Argentina we knew what a menace he was, we knew he invaded Afghanistan and Iraq, everyone knew he did it for the oil and to control the Middle East. While watching the news with my family we wondered, and this wasn't crazy thoughts but the logical thinking after watching a madman invade two countries in the span of mere years, if Venezuela and so the whole of South America was next.
Then when Obama came everyone forgot about it (even many people here) and yankees were all like "support the troops" without even thinking why there any troops to support in Iraq in the first place. Trump came, had a mediocre presidency, and then people were like oh Bush was better, unironically. The man who has the blood of millions of people on his hands, who invaded and ruined two countries that are still under war and chaos. It's insane.

The William J. Clinton Presidential Library
TRAVEL THERE – ANOTHER PRIMARILY PRESIDENTIAL DESTINATION If you follow my tags, you’ll find 19 posts about Primarily Presidential Destinations. I’ve got at least that many more on my wish list. The William J. Clinton Presidential Library was not on that list, but that’s only because I hadn’t really thought about it.
