You should tell us about the weird codependent relationship between the god of kobolds and tiamat.

So, in D&D, the god of kobolds is Kurtulmak. And Kurtulmak has a whole bag of chips on his shoulder. Originally, it was just against the gnomes, because gnomes and kobolds were set up as traditional enemies. But when 3e decided to lean into the idea that kobolds were wannabe dragons, Kurtulmak also developed something of a fixation on Tiamat.

I fleshed that out.

In my Prehistoric Game, The World Lost to Time, the relationship between Kurtulmak and Tiamat is similar to the relationship between Cthulhu and Azathoth in Derleth's interpretation of the Cthulhu Mythos. Kurtulmak is the high priest and evangelist for Tiamat among humanoids, but she barely notices him.

The Kobold Empire is the major power in Gondwana, the southern continental mass. It's a theocratic dictatorship, with the Emperor being seen as a living embodiment of Kurtulmak. Kurtulmak desperately wants to impress Tiamat and prove that he's just as much a dragon as any of her biological children. The worship of other gods is tolerated by non-kobold citizens, but kobolds may only worship Kurtulmak and Tiamat. Heresy is punishable by death.

Incidentally, the name of the current Kobold Emperor was Kojark X. Kojark was to kobolds like Henry to the English monarchy or Louis to the French, one of several names with a long historical lineage. And that was a reference to my first big boss, Kojark the Kobold King, who had a cool wizard tower and delusions of grandeur. That Kojark thought that that made him a legitimate world power when he was just a little weirdo. A powerful weirdo, but still.

So my players leaned right into this religious fascist paranoid setting. Partially because they wanted to RP the witch hunt mentality of immediately-post 9/11 America in a safer way, and also because they were a bunch of teenage boys, some of whom legitimately hated each other but I was the best DM they knew. So a major part of the first act of that campaign was an inquisitor of Tiamat played by one person sniffing around a decadent noble played by another person, whose character secretly worshiped the weird BDSM goddess from Book of Vile Darkness. The decadent tried to kill the inquisitor and failed, then the inquisitor brought him up on heresy charges and he was executed, and everyone agreed that was a fun way to end that character and that player brought in a new one. Who was a samurai who was growing ever more feral from a curse, who eventually killed the inquisitor when he (the samurai) was mind controlled by slaadi sorcerers. And that was a good ending for that character as well.

And now one of the players in that game? Is running his own game about zealous fascist kobolds, whose leadership is trying desperately to prevent the rank and file from learning that they can turn into true dragons.

I am excited to share a little piece of my bachelor's degree final art project! I created a visual identification concept art document for a multi-platform puzzle video game called URNFIELD! It's designed as an experience mainly for mobile devices and inspired by bronze and early iron age burial rites that occured in the areas of modern day Poland and Central Europe. It combines puzzles with learning about the artifacts and burial practices of these prehistoric times :-))

for the record my official paleontologist review of Paleo Pines is

it's gorgeous

it's so cute

it's super fun

it takes too long to get into it, the start is just... slow. too slow.

it needs more tutorials/explanations of things in the game, I had to look up waaaaay too much stuff online just to understand certain things

I am once again begging game devs to hire me as a "taxon balancer" because why did we need four dromaeosaurs and not a single alvarezsaur or small running ornithopod/neornithischian thing? why are there no sauropodomorphs at all when plenty would be smaller than the ornithischians and theropods??? why is Wuerhosaurus in the Game at all when it's just Stegosaurus but Later???

I can accept Postosuchus and Desmatosuchus being there (barely, like I love Triassic Weirdos but like... idk, don't call everything a dinosaur then) but Dimetrodon????? Permia isn't even one of the seasons!!! come on!!!

a farming/ranching game without romance??? I don't have to have a pansexual crisis??? hooray!

how dare the number of dinosaurs you can keep happy on your ranch be finite based on dreamstones and not space

I *love* the flavor system and it took me way too long to figure out that favorite treats are based on each individual animal's specific favorite secondary flavor

I want more dinosaurs and more regions

you should be able to befriend animals without necessarily bringing them home (and yes, I know, you can send them to the wilds, but they look so OFFENDED, like... why can't I just make friends)

I'm addicted to this game, send help, I am hopelessly behind on Fossil Novembirb posts and I want to turn in a grant proposal this week

I'm glad I waited till after my big conference to play because of the aforementioned addiction

Meig's Official Paleontologist Review of Amber Isle

This game is so accessible. I tend to use cheaters/trainers a lot in most video games because I'm a Busy Adult Without Countless Hours To Spend Grinding In Video Games - but I don't need them in Amber Isle. They also don't exist for Amber Isle, but still - I'm not wishing I had them the whole time. It's especially "ADHD time blindness" friendly

THE CHARACTERS ARE SO CUTE HOLY FUCK they all have such interesting and unique personalities and they are just so precious. I must protect Kipper at all costs.

Yes, you're a shopkeeper, but you don't have to be a raging capitalist. In fact, in many ways, it's better for the game to undercharge people / pay more for things they sell you / give lots of gifts in order to bump up your friendship with the community; it's very easy to get money in the game and you really don't need to be stingy or go for huge profits in order to win

I LOVE THAT THEY ARE CALLED "PALEOFOLK". Not a single character is called a dinosaur that isn't a dinosaur, unlike other paleo games *cough paleo pines cough*. And because they aren't limiting themselves to the Mesozoic, there's a nice interesting variety of prehistoric critters for the characters.

It's so much fun that your character is also a Paleofolk and that there's so many options. I wish we could wear pants, but other than that...

The taxon balancing needs a *wee* bit of work. Since they can do the Paleozoic and Cenozoic, it's ironically too dinosaur-heavy; and those dinosaurs are a little biased and don't include anything more derived than Archaeopteryx, which is... a mistake. I recognize the devs had a challenge in picking the right charismatic fauna, but still. Honestly, this problem is easily solved: just add more paleofolk!

That said it is so nice to have a game with Maiasaura :3

The world is beautiful and so much fun to explore

The calendar is way too long. WAY too long. Has anyone actually gotten to year 2? Because I haven't. Also it's windy too much. The weather should be more varied.

I would love for info about different objects to come up when you're going through them so it's easier to make sure the items you're displaying are balanced and so you know what to recommend for different customer requests

The main quest is a little short, so it would be nice for more content to be added to it in the future. I'd also love to be able to have more adventures and activities when hanging out with paleofolk

Once again, a game without romance. Hooray! No pansexual crises!
