Old Games New Reviews #70 – Jak and Daxter: The Precursor Legacy HD (PS3, photo courtesy of ripten). Jak and Daxter is the perfect snapshot of a company (Naughty Dog) expanding and making greater the formula of their somewhat linear Crash Bandicoot series. It’s homage to those Banjoo and Conker Rare games on the N64, which themselves were homage to Mario 64, which, like J&D, is one of the greatest 3D polygon games I’ve still ever played. True, Nintendo were still running circles around this type of fare on the GameCube around its initial release time, but nobody wanted that system for some reason haha. What’s most important is that I played this game in 2012 or 2013…10+ years after it came out…and it was still fresh and fun. A simple premise of grabbing orbs, as old as grabbing coins and rings and rupees themselves, can make a great game if done right. The gameplay and mechanics are a love letter if not love child for all those games (namely Mario 64 and Ocarina of Time if not Sunshine and Twilight Princess). The bright and colorful graphics pull in young and old alike but it’s the puzzles that will keep even the older gamers a little entranced and asking themselves “I can’t believe this kiddie game has sucked me in”. And that’s the beauty of Jak and Daxter Precursor Legacy in a nutshell…a game with no ambitions other than to entertain and give enjoyment, much like when "video games" came of age in the days of Atari and later on the NES…before everything had to be a technical marvel and feel “realistic”.
