I've been thinking about the world of pacific rim post canon, and the ideas I've seen thrown around over the years about Newt and Hermann having trouble finding work after the breach is closed.

Given the world is still reeling after 12 years of kaiju ravaging it causing earth to become a dystopia with humanitarian crises' plaguing it. So I'm gonna figure when the PPDC open up about everything to the press and the world, the fact that we as humans practically terraformed the earth for the precursors to take over is gonna come out, which I imagine people aren't gonna be to happy with the insinuation that we are partially to blame.

Because of this I can see Newt and Hermann urging people that we need to change our ways fast, create a climate agreement, stop large scale pollution and greenhouse gases, ect. which obviously a large amount of people will NOT be happy with this given how many people in real life don't listen to scientists because of greed and their own political bias and how it effects scifi media with the "ignored expert" trope.

I imagine it would be worse putting the blame where it truly belongs like corporations, capitalism, ect. (with addition of years of pollution and radiation from the PPDC and jaegers itself adding to the problem) it wouldn't just be public opinion that would turn on the scientists (maybe even other members of the PPDC). Not to mention if the press and news outlets trying to keep things "positive" and "light" for the public I can see Newt and Hermann growing more and more frustrated that no one is taking things seriously now that the breach is closed and that no one is listening that earth are likely not in the clear yet. (I'm thinking like these scenes from don't look up) causing some politicians, people, and corporations to try and discredit them despite their efforts helping saving the world.

among us makes a huge comeback in 2034 and precursor!newt is forced to play it to maintain his Cool Nerd persona. he keeps getting assigned impostor every single time though and he's furious about it

I had the most bizarre conversation with a Guillermo del Toro fan who claimed that Pacific Rim never fully revealed the Precursors' motives because, and I quote, "I don't think the ravings of a somewhat unreliable character after trying an untested procedure are meant to be interpreted as absolute fact."

Friend... if you think Newt was ever meant to be read as "somewhat unreliable" or "raving" when he said that the Precursors were hostile colonizers, that says more about your own prejudices than any sort of authorial intent. Especially since, ya know, we have words from both Guillermo del Toro and Travis Beacham confirming that Newt was correct?

But yeah sure cling to the idea that we were never meant to read the guys modeled after French aristocracy and Catholic clergy as actual villains in a film directed by Guillermo del Toro.

I know a lot of people explain Newt's behavior in PRU with "oh well the Precursors are possessing him," but thing is???? I can't even believe the Precursors would act like that. *Gestures over to the Precursor bishop* He would not say that!!!

all those newt with the parka posts in the domestication tag are giving SUCH a good vibe. if you feel like it, could you write something for domestication!newt with hermann's parka?

Alrighty. "I thought you would like to have this." The parka is old, frayed and worn. It's covered in patches, the color is faded, and the lining looks like it's been replaced several times. But it's warm and soft and smells like Hermann, so he takes it. He holds it up to his face, buries his cheek in the soft fur. It feels familiar and safe. Memories rise to the surface, of Hermann and him, when he was still whole and human and good. A warm cup of tea in Anchorage, the two of them complaining about the cold. Climbing onto the Shatterdome roof to look at the stars. Hermann trying not to laugh at one of his jokes. Hermann holding him after that first, terrifying Drift, the one that tore open his mind and let Them come crawling in.

"Thank you." He says. He hopes that Hermann understands, somehow, that he's not just talking about the parka. He's been given another reminder, that what Hermann says is true, and they really had been friends. That he really does care about Newt. And somewhere inside him, a few more broken pieces fit back together.

Watching pacrim2 and seein they made newt evil i was like nah this is way ooc for him. My man would never

listened to the directors commentary and got really upset that they cgi'ed out his tears in this scene but then i remembered i can draw so i made it real 💥 imagine how cool it could have been if newt had been crying and then when the precursors take back control he still has the tear tracks but hes immediately stopped crying and any remnants of being distressed are completely wiped from his face and he smiles. #horrific do you see my vision newmann nation
