Maximising Your Laser Results: Preparation, Aftercare, and Realistic Expectations
Hello again! If you’ve been following along, you’ll know that LBHR is one of the most popular treatments for managing excessive hair growth caused by PCOS. But as we dive deeper into this process, it’s important to recognise that booking your consultation is only the first step. Preparation, aftercare, and understanding how to maintain your results are key, especially since, for many of us with PCOS, the typical six sessions recommended for most people will not be enough (Liew, 2002).
Preparation for LBHR: Setting Yourself Up for Success
Avoiding Prolonged/Excessive Sun Exposure: One of the most important pre-session steps is to avoid direct sun exposure. Tanned skin can increase the risk of burns or pigmentation changes due to the laser (Alamri et al., 2023).
Shaving Before Treatment: Make sure to shave the treatment area a day before your session—this allows the laser to effectively target the root of the hair follicle without the hair shaft getting in the way (Mustafa & Jaafar, 2015).
Avoid Waxing or Plucking: It’s crucial not to remove the hair from the root (like with waxing or plucking) before your laser sessions, as the laser needs the follicle intact to adequately target the melanin within the hair follicle.
Check Medications and Skincare Products: Some medications or topical skincare products, known as ‘photosensitisers,’ can increase your skin’s sensitivity to the laser. Always inform your clinician about your prescriptions and skincare routine, even if it seems minor (Kerstein et al., 2014).
Aftercare: Protecting Your Skin for Optimal Healing
Cool Down: During your session, cooling methods like a cold air attachment or cooling gel may be used to soothe the skin. At home, continue to keep the area cool—use ice packs or aloe vera gel to relieve any redness or irritation. This is particularly important for darker skin tones, as clinical endpoints (like redness and swelling) may appear later (Vaidya et al., 2023).
Moisturise Regularly: Keep the treated area moisturised using a thick, emollient-type moisturiser to help protect the skin from excessive water loss. Avoid any products with ingredients like retinol or AHAs/BHAs for 2-3 days post-treatment, as these can irritate the more sensitive, lasered skin (Vaidya et al., 2023).
Avoid Sun Exposure: Just like before your treatment, protecting your skin from the sun afterward is essential. Use a broad-spectrum SPF 50+ to prevent hyperpigmentation (Hamzavi et al., 2020).
Gentle Cleansing: Stick to mild cleansers, and avoid hot showers, saunas, or strenuous workouts that cause sweating for at least 24-36 hours post-treatment. Sweating can trap moisture in swollen hair follicles, potentially leading to rashes or infections (Arsiwala & Majid, 2019).
Maintaining Results and Understanding the Process
While LBHR offers long-term reduction in hair growth, it’s important to remember that this journey is a process—it’s not an instant fix. For those with PCOS, the typically recommended six sessions are often not enough, and you’ll likely need additional treatments to see significant changes. Here’s why:
Hormonal Impact: With PCOS, fluctuating hormone levels continuously stimulate hair growth, which means more than six sessions are often necessary to achieve lasting results. Each session weakens the hair follicles further, which is why consistency is key. Remember, if you’re waxing between sessions, you’re removing the root that the laser targets, so it’s best to stick with shaving.
Regular Treatments: Consistent treatments, spaced every 4-6 weeks, are essential for targeting hair during its active growth phase. While this may feel frequent at first, patience and consistency are what lead to noticeable results. You’ll likely notice slower hair growth, and the hair that does return will be thinner and sparser. In my experience treating patients with PCOS, most clients start seeing these effects around the 6-7 session mark, with hair shedding naturally after it weakens.
Maximising My Results: What Else Should I Do?
Stay on Top of Hormonal Management: Since PCOS is closely linked to hormone imbalances, working with a healthcare provider to manage your hormones—whether through medication or lifestyle changes—can enhance the effectiveness of your laser treatments. For me personally, hormonal management became much more controllable after I was prescribed Metformin by a specialist. While I can’t recommend specific treatments, I strongly encourage seeing a medical professional to keep your PCOS under control.
Choosing the Right Clinic/Clinician: Not all lasers are created equal. Ensure you select a clinic with advanced technology and experience in treating individuals with PCOS, especially across diverse skin tones. You may have heard that darker hair on lighter skin achieves quicker results, but modern laser modalities can effectively treat all skin types. Regardless of your skin tone, as long as you have dark hair, there’s a suitable laser for you.
LBHR is a powerful tool for managing PCOS-related hair growth, but achieving the best results requires thoughtful preparation, diligent aftercare, and realistic expectations. With consistency and proper support, this journey can lead to significant, long-lasting results. Don’t hesitate to consult with your healthcare provider to tailor your treatment plan, and always be patient with the process. By following these guidelines, you’ll be well on your way to maintaining and maximising your results

The shocking truth about the best keto food plan for weight loss
Although losing weight can be difficult, with the appropriate strategy, it can become much simpler. Among these strategies, the ketogenic (keto) diet has become incredibly popular in recent years. To put your body into a state of ketosis, you must eat high-fat, moderate-protein, and low-carbohydrate foods. This promotes weight loss by encouraging your body to use fat as fuel instead of carbohydrates. We'll talk about the surprising advice on how to lose weight with the best keto diet plan in this blog post.

Make a Meal Plan in Advance
Meal preparation is one of the most important components of any diet. It keeps you from making rash eating decisions that might not be keto-friendly. When following the ketogenic diet, you must be sure to eat enough meals that are low in carbohydrates, moderate in protein, and high in healthy fats. You can make sure you're meeting these criteria and remaining on track by planning your meals in advance.
Concentrate on Good Fats
Although the keto diet emphasizes a lot of fat, not all fats are created equal. Pick wholesome sources of fat, including avocados, olive oil, almonds, and seeds. These fats are vital to keep you feeling full for a longer period of time and to offer essential nutrients. You can maintain good skin, hair, and nails by eating healthy fats.
Don't eat processed foods.
Processed foods might have hidden sugars and are frequently high in carbs. When possible, choose whole, unprocessed foods. Fresh fruits, vegetables, meats, and dairy items are included in this. You'll be able to maintain a low carbohydrate intake, which is necessary for entering the ketosis state, by avoiding processed foods.
Maintain Macros Records
When on a ketogenic diet, keeping track of your macronutrients is crucial. Aim to consume the recommended amount of protein and fat while adhering to your daily carbohydrate allowance. Your body will continue to burn fat for fuel as a result of this, assisting you in maintaining your ketosis condition.
Consume A Lot of Water
It's crucial to stay hydrated when on a ketogenic diet. Water consumption can aid in weight loss and may lessen the symptoms of the keto flu. The keto flu is a typical side effect of the diet and can result in symptoms including exhaustion, nausea, and headaches.
Take into account a periodic fasting
When you intermittently fast, you only eat during a certain window of time. Some people discover combining the ketogenic diet with intermittent fasting can help them lose weight. Your body will reach a state of ketosis more quickly if you limit the amount you eat.
In conclusion, adopting a ketogenic diet can help you lose weight. You can reach your weight loss objectives by pre-planning your meals, emphasizing healthy fats, avoiding processed foods, measuring your macronutrients, consuming lots of water, and thinking about intermittent fasting. Never forget that it's always better to seek medical advice before beginning any new diet or workout regimen.

(requested by anonymous; I needed a name, and for the service Neji-Pan does our community, it only seemed fair. Look up their Pixiv if you want more fem!Doc content, and you won’t be disappointed [NSFW warning here - not for the Arknights side, necessarily].)
“Doctor,” Dr. Kal’tsit entered her office with a knock. “You’re due for a check-up.”
“Ah, yes. I’ll be right over to the medical bay, I just need to finish this first.” Her hood was down, exposing the long scar of Originum which ran across her left cheek.
Her physician shook her head. “The room is already booked, and considering your condition, any delay is unacceptable.”
“Hmm...Understood.” The Doctor saved her work and followed Kal’tsit to her office. “Are these check-ups normally conducted in your office, Dr. Kal’tsit?”
“Yours are of special concern to me; should one of the other medics find your test results, they may do something...rash.”
The patient cocked her head. “Rash, Dr-”
“Call me Kal, if you would.” She reached into her desk and extracted a small, empty syringe. “If you don’t wish to extend the same courtesy, I can continue to use your title.”
“...No, I would prefer you call me Neji.”
Kal’tsit nodded. “Neji, before I take a blood sample, I do have a few questions I need you to answer. These may seem unusual, but they’re important for monitoring your mental state and prolonged recovery.”
“I’ll answer any question you have...although,” Neji thought aloud, “I do have a few myself.”
“After the examination, perhaps. Firstly, have you noticed any additional crystal growth?”
The patient shook her head. “No, the pre-existing crystals are the only ones present.”
“Any unusual aches or pains?” Her eyes narrowed as the Doctor was hesitant to answer. “Any at all?”
“Yes...but I believe they may be the result of ill-fitting clothing more than anything else.”
Kal’tsit blinked. “Where.”
“My...my chest and shoulders, particularly after my workouts.” She sighed. “I’ve asked Orchid for advice, but I need measurements for her, and asking for someone to help take them is rather embarrassing.”
“I see. Seeing as I need to conduct a physical exam of you regardless, I’m willing to do that for you.”
Neji’s eye lit up. “Thank you, Kal.”
“...I haven’t heard you say my name like that in some time.” The doctor closed her eyes and sighed. “The rest should be self-evident. Lets begin the physical portion.”
“Very well. Um, to what extent do I need to strip for this?”
If anyone who knew Kal’tsit well had been in the room, they might have noticed the subtle change in her expression; unfortunately, the only person who had held that position had just asked the question. “You can keep your underwear on...for now.”
“Hmm?” The Doctor had already removed her jacket and was working on the T-shirt beneath it. “Did you say something, Kal?”
“No, please, continue.” She dabbed the corner of her mouth with a tissue as Neji finished preparing for the examination, going so far as to fold her clothing...Kal’tsit had always loved her fixation on order.
The physician rolled her desk chair forward, held down on a lever at the bottom until it became a flat bed for her patient to lay on, and patted the top. “Lay down on this, please.”
“Your chair is rather remarkable,” Neji observed as she followed Kal’tsit’s instruction. “Perfect for your line of work.”
“You had a hand in designing it, actually. Where should we start...Do you remember anything from before your recovery from Chernobog?”
Her patient sighed. “Some, yes. Random information, nothing I have found useful yet. It raised a question about our previous relationship, however.”
“Oh?” Kal’tsit was doing her best to ignore the tragic incapability of the Doctor’s bra to perform its designated functions and conduct a facsimile of an exam. “You can ask it, certainly.”
“Was our marriage legally binding?”
She stepped back from the chair-turned-hospital-bed. “You...you remember?”
“I have clear memories of the two of us wearing white and holding hands in front of Pramanix in something that looked like ceremonial garb...that was a marriage ceremony, correct?”
“It...it was.” Kal’tsit sat on her desk. “Neji, I’m sorry for what I was about to do.”
The Doctor sat up, kicking the lever to return the chair to its original form. “Honey, do you want to know something funny?”
“Honey?”
“A term of endearment - I don’t remember the old ones.” She stood up and wrapped Kal’tsit in an embrace. “Why did you keep quiet for so long?”
“I...I was scared.”
Neji chuckled, which created a new distraction for Kal’tsit to deal with. “Oh, Kal, you should never be scared of me. If I was willing to marry you once, I’m willing to do it again to make sure it takes.”
“You are?” Kal’tsit pulled back just enough to look her in the eye. “But you don’t remember anything about that time-”
“I remember you brushing my hair and humming songs I never learned the names of, but I asked for ‘the slow one that starts on C minor’ and you would hum it for me. I remember taking you to a Lungmen restaurant and accidentally ordering a bowl of ramen too spicy for either of us to eat, so we asked to take it to-go and gave it to a homeless Infected girl...who, if I remember correctly, later became one of our Operators, but who she is or where she is now I couldn’t tell you. I remember a conversation on a beach where you said you could never love anyone else. I remember being struck by a small chunk of Originum which fell from the sky, and you crying as you and Nearl tended to me. The look on your face was heart-breaking...But most importantly, I remember this sensation of holding you to my chest, of feeling your cheeks warm as you tried to think about anything else but how much you wanted to give me a thorough ‘exam,’ of waiting for just the right moment to-”
At that point, she licked her neck and pressed even closer, lifting her wife by the thighs and after a well-placed kick laid down with her on the “impulse” chair, as Neji had called it when designing it. Kal’tsit’s ears began twitching as she reached one hand for the Doctor’s head to scratch behind her drooping Cautus ears and settled the other below her waist, lost to the world as euphoria and memories entangled themselves in an intoxicating fog over her mind…
Any pretense of medical necessity was thrown out the window, but the next hour could still be considered a physical exam. This was repeated several times throughout the day, in a number of private locations, and by the next day, it was clear that the fire had been completely rekindled. Their co-workers, for the most part, were thankful that the sexual tension that they’d emitted for some time now could finally be released healthily. It did make company meetings a little awkward sometimes, but that was a fair price to pay - and, for some of the Operators, made for a good distraction, as watching one trying to ignore the other’s wandering hands during a brief was far more engaging than the presentations themselves...

Several reasons why you’re dealing with skin issues during lockdown
I think I can say with some conviction that every single person I know has seen some kind of skin issue occur during lockdown. And don’t get me started on those of us who have to deal with skin complaints on the regular.
As a regular subscriber to the Time Of The Month Hormonal Breakout Club, I’m used to dealing with temperamental skin. But a couple of weeks before lockdown, things got different. Just a month before lockdown I was loving the effect that my Dermatica subscription prescription was having on my skin. That every other night, with a night or two of Paula’s Choice Skin Perfecting 2% BHA Liquid Exfoliant, and my skin was looking good. It felt so smooth. But then it didn’t. I noticed a rash on my neck, jaw line and cheeks. The only time I’d seen something similar in the past was when I had gone overboard with a Glycolic Acid Toner. Tons of tiny little bumps came up. My skin didn’t feel irritated at all, which made things even more weird. In a Carrie Bradshaw tone, I asked myself: “what has changed in my life recently?”
#1 You’re stressed; your skin’s stressed Whew, life is really throwing everything at us right now. Turn on the TV and it’s all about the latest Covid-19 related ‘numbers’; scroll through Twitter and it’s a war zone of everyone telling everyone else what a piece of shit human they are. Scroll through Instagram and you’re likely to come across a still taken from a video of George Floyd being murdered by a Minneapolis police officer that comes with no trigger warning.
It’s a lot.
And it keeps coming, in waves. For me, it comes in the form of tension, all along my jaw, and it lasts for days, ending up in the form of the most intense, painful headaches. When I finally get out of bed, I feel drunk. I haven’t been drinking, but I wish that I had. Instead it’s like my body has been through so much, it needs another 10 hours of sleep to get all the chemicals back in order.
Every time our eyes see something triggering, our body goes into flight or fight mode, readying us to get away. It’s your body trying to protect you, and, due to current events, it’s going through this function several times a day. Each and every time this happens, the chemicals/hormones within you get stirred up, but as there is no actual reason for you to ‘take flight’, so that energy/adrenalin gets reabsorbed, creating tension and confusion in the body. The result? Equally confused skin. What can you do? Protect your energy when you can. No-one’s telling you to go bury yourself under the duvet until 2021, but the odd day under there, spent with your favourite books and no phone, will do you the world of good.Social media is not going ANYWHERE, so please, for your spirit, delete your account for a day, or just turn your phone off. Failing that, try some breathing techniques to bring yourself back into the here and now, because that’s all there is.
#2 You’re dehydrated I know, you probably thought that by being indoors more often you’d easily slam it when it came to staying hydrated, right? Instead, that pint glass you filled up this morning is probably still sitting there, because you’re taking it for granted that you’ll get it done. I mean, what else is there to do during lockdown… While there’s much push and pull on whether drinking more water is good for your skin, the fact is, you need to hydrate your body, period. As your skin is the body’s largest organ, it only makes sense that it’s gonna need hydrating too, but actually, it’s at the bottom of the list when it comes to how your body distributes the water. Your brain and blood get first dibs on the water you ingest, so if you’re sticking with one litre a day, it’s highly likely that your skin could be looking dull and lacklustre. Speaking from personal experience, I can literally feel when I’m dehydrated; it often starts with a headache, and my skin will feel almost papery dry, and I get minimum 2.5 litres per day. Whether you believe in the whole’ 4 litres a day for glowing skin’ thing or not, I’m pretty sure that if you try and drink even 300ml per hour while you’re awake (that’s a Coke can!) you’ll be sufficiently hydrated. I’m not telling you to go drink crazy amounts - just enough to make you go pee more frequently. What can you do? Whatever your water intake is currently, tell yourself you’re going to increase it by 50%. Then measure out that water into how ever many glasses that is, or into a large jug, and keep it on display. Every time you get up to do anything - like go to the fridge - drink a glass. Speaking of pee…
#3 You’re blocked up, down there… Let’s talk shit. No, but really; the amount of articles I’ve read talking about ‘Lockdown Skin’ and ‘How Quarantine Affects Your Skin,’ and no-one is talking about poo. So let me do it for them. If you are now sitting down for prolonged periods of time, more than ever, your digestion is gonna take a hit. But really it should be taking a… Gosh sorry, let me focus. With our commutes to and from work gone, and no more morning drop-offs and evening pickups for the kids, and definitely no extra trips to the shops, the cinema or any activity that you’d usually do, we are definitely moving less. Add to that the fact that the only place we’re visiting on the regular is likely to be the fridge for another snack, and we’re more than likely adding way more sugar or junk food than usual to our diet. On a good, pre-Corona day, you could probably put away a Five Guys meal no problem; but during lockdown, when you’re ordering simply because you don’t have any desire to do ANYMORE WASHING UP, and your poor digestion starts to slow down. On a ‘regular’ day, digestion is no quick thing - especially if you eat meat, it can take hours - but if we’re just sitting there, theres nothing to get things up and moving. So we slow down, we start to feel sluggish, then we realise, we haven’t had a bowel movement for five days, and it’s easy to understand why your skin’s looking angry. What can you do? Set a timer for yourself; if you’re now working from home, like the vast majority of us, it’s vital to take regular breaks. Set a timer for an hour or 45 minutes, then reward yourself by getting up, stretching, moving around, walking, drinking some water. Spend at least 5-10 minutes away from your work environment, then get back to it. Throw a couple of workouts or long walks in, and you’ll be in a better position to get things moving down there.
#4 Your skin’s not getting the air it’s used to It’s not just movement that we’re missing out on by no more commuting to work - it’s fresh air too. I think one of the biggest ‘little things’ that many of us have realised we take for granted, is pure, unadulterated, no-time-limits fresh air. Feeling the sun on your face, getting that vitamin D, and just being able to breathe in gulps of air, can have a huge effect on our skin, but also our mood. Also, think about what else happens when we’re out and about; all those tiny human interactions, like saying hi to a barista or chatting to someone in the supermarket, can add up to us just feeling better about our day. The air indoors has also changed; at the start of lockdown many of us were having the central heating on all day here in the UK, because it was so cold. That’s a skin dehydrator all by itself. Now that the weather’s warmed up a lot, we’re now struggling with another form of dehydration! What can you do? Now that lockdown measures have eased, take advantage of your time outside. Maximise that fresh air and go for a run, grab a skipping rope or play a ball game with your new-found ‘friend bubble’. All at the correct social distance, obviously - don’t be a dick.

All the Cliches
When I started writing this post in my head, I was going to title it something like Out of Hibernation, yet make it known that I wasn’t planning to bore you with a 1,300 word soliloquy comparing myself to a Bleeding Heart (which is apparently a Spring perennial and, you know, we’re all about cliches here) blooming through the last remnants of Winter frost.
Then I thought, no, do I really need an intro to tell everyone I’m back on my bullshit after a few steps forward and another step back?
Then I realized...isn’t running really just the epitome of a giant cliche?
TL;DR I had a big accomplishment in the fall and thought the momentum would carry over super easily into the Spring.  I ignored some symptoms, realized I was anemic, felt really sad, and now I’m starting to feel like myself again.  aka, the simple, common, cliched journey of every.single.runner.
Even though this experience is the embodiment of what it means to be an endurance athlete, why do we act surprised every single time?  Leading up to Philadelphia, after my year of mystery illness [which, it turns out, had another plot twist.  Remember how I was having a massive immune system reaction and pretty terrible quality of life?  Well, after we found mold in the house the problem went 90% away.  The remaining 10% was still driving me crazy.  Long story short, the installation of a whole-home water filter has returned me to a fully functioning human being.  Hello, my name is Anna and I’m just your local canary in the coal mine] I vowed I would do a better job about just letting life go with the flow and not try to fight the current every step of the way.  I guess I got too big for my britches because - lo and behold - I found myself avoiding what I pretty much knew all along.
After Philadelphia, I took 2 weeks off and really enjoyed my down time.  The highlight was a day trip to French Lick, where Dave and I hit the casino (I won $25), ate all the sweets, shopped, split an amazing kobe beef burger, got day drunk, and took the scenic drive home.  The next day I started running again and, much to my surprise, felt way better than I normally do after two weeks of zero exercise.  This felt like a big win.
Tumblr media
December turned out to be extra crazy, then at the end of January I co-hosted a women’s running retreat, BAnna Camp.  Any fatigue I was feeling during December and January I just chalked up to stress and the typical things you do when you’re in that awkward in-between period from one race to another:  less sleep, less healthy food, less fitness.
Tumblr media
^have to make sure this post never dies
The first day I was in Austin, Becki and I did a workout together.  It was my first “real” workout back (other than some fartleks and strides), and it wasn’t even supposed to be hard:  3 x 7 min @ 6:00 pace.  I STRUGGLED.  I couldn’t breathe, my quads were heavy, and the paces felt much more difficult than they seemed like they should.  But, there were plenty of excuses:  it’s windy, we were running a net uphill, I was dehydrated from travel, I was stressed about the upcoming camp, etc. etc.  Midway through that workout I had a very distinct thought of oh shit, this feels very anemic right now.  That night I texted my friend who would be joining us later in the week and asked her to bring some iron pills, since I had forgotten my supplement.
The following week my workout didn’t feel great, but again, it was easy to make excuses.  I was on a treadmill.  I was still catching up on sleep from camp.  Maybe I’m more out of shape than I thought.
Longer efforts didn’t feel great, but I was getting them done.  My paces felt quick, but, winter training never feels amazing.  Plus, it seemed like every workout I did was into a strong wind, so how can you really judge pace and effort?
In early February, I had my first race of the season which was a 5 miler in downtown Indy.  I had told Dave I was going to hold 5:30 pace for as long as I could and see what happened.  My first mile was 5:54, and Dave said he could hear me breathing before he could see me.  I was 3rd that day in just under 30:00.  Again, there were plenty of excuses.  It was windy.  We had celebrated Valentine’s Day the night before, so maybe steak, lobster, buttered mashed potatoes, and wine wasn’t the best pre-race meal?
During my sulking about the race I had an aha moment.  In December, prior to realizing we had an issue with our water, I was trying to figure out what was still causing skin rashes and GI issues.  The only thing I was taking every day was ferrous sulfate, which is an iron supplement that is gentle on your stomach but has some suspect ingredients (food colorings, sorbate, etc.).  I decided to switch my supplement (one that had worked for me for YEARS) to something that seemed “cleaner”:  ionic iron.  While I was wracking my brain trying to figure out what could be wrong, it occurred to me to check my iron dosage.
I was taking ~10% of my normal ferrous sulfate dosage, and honestly don’t even know how absorbable ionic iron even is.  That day I made the switch back to ferrous sulfate, but knew that if my iron/ferritin was low, it would take about 6 weeks before I felt a difference.
If at this point you’re reading along and thinking to yourself, it’s not expensive to just go and get a blood test to find out whether your iron is low - you are absolutely correct.  I should have just scheduled an appointment to take a blood test and find out.  But, I’m stubborn.
Two weeks after my 5 mile race I flew to Atlanta for the Road to Gold, an 8 mile race on the 2020 Olympic Trials course.  This is a whole other post in and of itself, but I will say that the hype is real.  That course is going to be hard.
While the experience was great, my time was not.  My goal had been to run 5:45 pace through the first 4 miles and then pick up the pace.  While I did go through the first 4 miles in 22:50, just under my goal, I went through the next 4 miles in 24:20ish, and again felt as though I couldn’t breathe.  I finally conceded it was time for a blood test.
Tumblr media
The results were pretty much exactly what I thought they would be:  low ferritin, high CO2 in my blood, and borderline-low Vitamin D.  After weeks of agonizing over whether I was out of shape I finally had an answer (albeit one I should have just figured out sooner).  So, I upped my iron supplement and looked ahead.
Nowhere to go but up, right?
In the following weeks I paid better attention to meal timing (i.e., if I was having a steak for dinner I wasn’t pairing it with red wine or other iron-inhibiting foods).  I cut out my second cup of coffee in the afternoon so that my body could have a better chance at iron absorption.  I focused more on sleep.  I got back on nutrient tracking to make sure I was getting everything I needed from my diet.
and it paid off
6 weeks after my miserable 5 mile race where I could barely run faster than 5:58 pace for 5 miles, I ran 1:16:37 in the Carmel half marathon on a less-than-ideal day with rain and wind.
During race week I cut out all caffeine and red wine to hopefully give my body the extra boost it needed to absorb iron.  I meal prepped early in the week so that I had nutrient-rich options readily available.  I said no to a couple work-related opportunities that popped up in favor of less stress, and I gave myself my best chance to succeed.
In truth, sometimes setting yourself up for success is scary.  What if you do everything possible and you don’t succeed?  I have seen so many talented athletes give up because they went all in and it didn’t immediately pay off.  But, that’s probably another post for another day, too.
Come race day we had 15 mph winds, pouring rain, and puddles on the course.  It will sound sarcastic when I say this, but that truly is my favorite racing weather.  Going into the race my A goal (not accounting for weather) was 75 min, B goal 76 min, and C goal 77 min.  My plan was to run the first 10 at 5:45 effort, then see how fast I could go the last 5k.
Starting off, I was very pleased to find myself in a pack of men and through the first mile around 5:40.  I NEVER trust my GPS, so all splits I give will be those from the course.  I went through 4 miles in 22:50 - the exact same time I went through 4 miles in Atlanta, only this time I felt so much better.  I went through 6.55 (again, as marked on the course, not my GPS) in 37:26 and felt like I really had a chance at sub 75 still.  Through 10 miles I was right at 58 min.  I felt strong for the first time in a long time.
Tumblr media
Around mile 11 I started to get tired, and just focused on getting through 0.5 miles at a time.  T last couple miles were definitely the toughest, as they were mostly uphill/into the wind.  76:38 is my fourth fastest half [74:03, Houston, PERFECT weather; 75:20, ‘17 US championships, goal race full taper, 75:59, Columbus half, 4 weeks out from Philly], and this gives me a lot of encouragement considering some sub-par months of training.
Now that I am feeling the effects of higher ferritin, I’m beginning to wonder if I wasn’t a little bit low during my Philly build up.  I have had some of my best long runs and workouts the past couple weeks - ones that would have blown away what I did leading up to Philly.  It also makes sense, given how I felt the last half of my Philly race, that my ferritin may have been low.  Moving forward, I’m going to schedule blood work much more regularly so that I don’t have preventable problems like this occur.  Definitely kicking myself, but, as with all failures in life it was a great opportunity to learn and grow.
My next race is in 6 weeks and I’ll be at the 25k championships in Grand Rapids.  I’m looking forward to seeing what another 6 weeks of quality training and (hopefully) warmer weather can do for my fitness!

all of the evil asks (but only if you have the time!!) for wing because he's my favorite son
Good news, nonnie! I am recovering from a twenty-one hour journey yesterday, which leaves me too dead to do adulting but just awake enough to dedicate 46 acres of my mind to Wing Fanchu. (And really, which is the more wholesome task, anyway?)
1. What does their bedroom look like?
I’ll do his pre-H.I.V.E. bedroom, since we’re all familiar with the cells. Tan walls, a large window with a dark pull-down shade, and a large, low bed with a white comforter. Some posters of tricky martial arts positions. A neatly-rolled yoga mat in the corner, and space on the floor to use it.
2. Do they have any daily rituals?
Meditation, for 15-30 minutes every morning, assuming Otto has not set a new harebrained scheme in motion.
3. Do they exercise, and if so, what do they do? How often?
Wing certainly would, even if he didn’t have to. Martial arts, running, swimming, pull-ups, all those things. Probably every day. Maybe many times a day. Can you get paid to be strong?
4. What would they do if they needed to make dinner but the kitchen was busy?
Wait patiently, acting as though he wasn’t hungry at all.
5. Cleanliness habits (personal, workspace, etc.)
Very neat, but some of that comes from being someone who doesn’t take much stock in an excess of personal possessions. That said, Wing is very good about grooming his long hair, and keeping his notebooks in order, and so on. He makes his bed every morning, too, cuz his mama raised him right.
6. Eating habits and sample daily menu
Generally lots of vegetables—he enjoys treats but isn’t swayed by food just because it looks fancy. That said, he isn’t a picky eater, either. Whatever is on the lunch menu, he doesn’t mind.
Breakfast: raisin bran and yogurt, or avocado toast
Mid-morning snack: crushed nuts and dried fruit
Lunch: veggie wrap (i.e. tortilla with hummus, bell peppers, salad, tomatoes, cucumber, and cheese)
Mid-afternoon snack: peanut butter and celery
Dinner: Roasted mushrooms, onions, and broccoli with rice and a tofu burger
7. Favorite way to waste time and feelings surrounding wasting time
Wing isn’t really a time-waster. If he has a few extra moments, he might meditate or sleep. When he can’t focus, he tends to get up and do something else and try again later.
8. Favorite indulgence and feelings surrounding indulging
As a disciplined person, Wing doesn’t give much thought to indulgence, but he is generally good about restarting his routines after breaking them. Biggest example would be taking a day off from his workout routine.
9. Makeup?
“I am pleased you admire my high cheekbones, Shelby, but I see no reason to do something so frivolous as contour them.”
11. Intellectual pursuits?
Wing occasionally might read a book on strategy or martial arts, but he prefers the practical application in the gym.
12. Favorite book genre?
Non-fiction. He has little to no use for fantasies and make-believe.
13. Sexual Orientation? And, regardless of own orientation, thoughts on sexual orientation in general?
Pansexual. Generally accepting of queer identities, but also considers them to be a very private matter and so can feel uncomfortable when people bring it up.
14. Physical abnormalities? (Both visible and not, including injuries/disabilities, long-term illnesses, food-intolerances, etc.)
Allergy to strawberries and a bad knee from an accident that will probably need to be replaced later.
15. Biggest and smallest short term goal?
Biggest: get out of H.I.V.E. alive
Smallest: beat Shelby at literally any competition
16. Biggest and smallest long term goal?
Biggest: keep one (1) otto malpense from getting beaten up, burned, assaulted, kidnapped, brainwashed, bullied, bruised, cut, crushed, killed, maimed, and/or otherwise damaged
Smallest: visit his mom’s grave annually
17. Preferred mode of dress and rituals surrounding dress
Simple, non-dramatic garb. I have always imagined that Wing would be his best self in business casual sweaters. He is also very particular about the shoes that he wears, but I don’t know enough about shoes to comment.
18. Favorite beverage?
Water.
19. What do they think about before falling asleep at night?
He doesn’t.
20. Childhood illnesses? Any interesting stories behind them?
Nothing much worse than the common cold, but he still has fond memories of his mom stopping in to check on him and give him soup, and his dad checking in on him before bed.
21. Turn-ons? Turn-offs?
Turn-ons: Sarcasm, which makes living with Otto and Shelby nigh unbearable.
Turn-offs: people who use the word “like” as a filler too much.
22. Given a blank piece of paper, a pencil, and nothing to do, what would happen?
He would set them neatly to the side and then put his head down and take on his chainsaw persona.
23. How organized are they? How does this organization/disorganization manifest in their everyday life?
Wing is very neat, but not entirely organized. In particular, he isn’t always good at keeping track of assignments for school, so he has gotten marked down a few times for not paying attention to dates and times, much to his disappointment.
24. Is there one subject of study that they excel at? Or do they even care about intellectual pursuits at all?
Wing has a modest success with almost all of his classes, but he is really good at strategy. If pressed, he could be a one-man armada. (That said, it isn’t like he considers intellectual things like math his beloved.)
25. How do they see themselves 5 years from today?
I don’t think Wing knows, but he would certainly hope to be partnering with one of his friends from school. If not, perhaps finding his place after going through his mother’s belongings.
26. Do they have any plans for the future? Any contingency plans if things don’t work out?
No, in part because H.I.V.E. doesn’t exactly cater to someone with his particular ethical framework. Wing wouldn’t want to exploit people for money, fame, or love, but he would find it just as tasteless to contract with a government to expose these deeds. Wing would feel most satisfied in a career where he has a personal connection—for example, running security in Laura’s tech company, or working as Otto’s personal bodyguard. Until Wing can get some life experience away from the island, he won’t have a clear idea of where he belongs.
27. What is their biggest regret?
Losing Otto to H.O.P.E. and allowing him to be brainwashed and taken advantage of in the worst of ways.
28. Who do they see as their best friend? Their worst enemy?
Best friend is Otto, obviously. Though their friendship was kind of manufactured by their close proximity, Wing finds Otto to be inspiring, trustworthy, and relatable.
Wing disdains all people he considers dishonorable, but he particularly loathes people who abuse their authority, like Dekker.
29. Reaction to sudden extrapersonal disaster (e.g. The house is on fire! What do they do?)
Action! If there are people and pets involved, then he saves them! If there is critical information that is needed, he makes that a second priority! He gets people to safety, calls for help, and continues to risk life and limb to make sure the people he cares about are okay.
30. Reaction to sudden intrapersonal disaster (eg close family member suddenly dies)
Well. It can be hard to tell, at first—Wing isn’t an entirely expressive guy. But, unsurprisingly, his pain has to come out in other ways. Lashing out, making rash decisions, losing motivation… all of these things are his way of not-coping with disaster because he struggles to express his emotions in a healthy way. (Many thanks to his dad for making him respond this way.)
31. Most prized possession?
His mom’s yin/yang necklace, although that is a gimme.
32. Thoughts on material possessions in general?
Not particularly concerned. Though Wing is not immune from sentiment, as in the case of his mom’s necklace, Wing’s strongest responses are for people and situations, not lifeless objects. It isn’t true to say that you could just pick Wing up and drop him anywhere, because of the social loss, but you could certainly burn his house down and he would be able to move on.
33. Concept of home and family?
Wing makes very deep bonds with the people who are emotionally open with him and who he spends a lot of time working and playing with. His mother (and father, to some extent) gave him that familial care when he was very young, but after Xiu Mei’s death and Cypher’s withdrawal from his home life, Lao became that staple of home love, a bond made strong by commitment and involvement. The same occurred when Wing came to H.I.V.E., and found a small home group in Otto, Laura, Shelby, Franz, and Nigel, who formed reciprocal relationships and made him feel like he belonged through the time they spent together.
34. Thoughts on privacy? (Are they a private person, or are they prone to ‘TMI’?)
Super private. He doesn’t mind sharing personal things with his nosy friends, but the rest of the school? If he had his way they wouldn’t know his eye color, much less the status of his feelings or relationships.
35. What activities do they enjoy, but consider to be a waste of time?
Puzzles, parkour, and frisbee.
36. What makes them feel guilty?
The times he has let down his friends, either by wrong action or inaction. Not taking care of himself. Lying by omission about his thoughts and feelings that he is not confident enough to share with people he respects. Leaving behind Lao, who might not know where he is.
37. Are they more analytical or more emotional in their decision-making?
Analytical, but with emotional motivations. Wing will bide his time bemoaning the loss of his best pal, very emotional and sad, and then assess the situation and jump into a helicopter when the time is right to save that pasty best friend’s ass.
38. Would they consider themselves a Type A or Type B personality?
Type B, which is not a usual thing for Alphas, let me tell you.
39. What recharges them when they’re feeling drained?
Sleep, meditation, working out, snuggling, listening to his friends have brilliant ideas (but only if he has been drained by hard and/or boring intellectual work), sleep.
40. Would you say that they have a superiority-complex? Inferiority-complex? Neither?
Maybe a slight inferiority complex that doesn’t show. In the wake of Xiu Mei’s death, Cypher made his son feel completely unimportant. Lao did the important work of rebuilding Wing’s self-esteem, but that sense of abandonment and unimportance can return in dark moments.
41. How misanthropic are they?
Not very. True facts, Wing could probably work for Greenpeace or a humanitarian aid society after school and feel very fulfilled defending ordinary people from corrupt militias and other dangerous things.
(Side note, Laura and Nigel would be my other contenders for humanitarian/charitable work, but Laura needs a greater intellectual challenge and Nigel would probably get overwhelmed and get back into evil botany.)
42. Hobbies?
Martial arts, sand art, yoga
43. How far did they get in formal education? What are their views on formal education vs self-education?
Wing received the best education his parents could get him as a young boy, but after his mother’s death he didn’t feel involved or interested, and his only interest became the passion for martial arts that he received from his mentor Lao. He quite admires self-education when it is done well, because it demonstrates high motivation and a deep passion for a subject of study.
44. Religion?
None, but he respects those who have one.
45. Superstitions or views on the occult?
Nothing major, but he does sometimes get the impression that his mother might be looking out for him, or reappearing in his life in small ways. Maybe in the way a flower blooms, maybe in hearing a familiar laugh. Or just good things happening.
46. Do they express their thoughts through words or deeds?
Usually deeds, because it is easier for Wing to step up to the plate and help his friends in whatever way they need to be helped without their asking. But nor is Wing embarrassed to admit it when he cares about people, and when he says those things, he means them.
47. If they were to fall in love, who (or what) is their ideal?
Brilliant smile. Someone he can enjoy a little competition with, but always in a friendly way. Someone who balances his quiet nature and composure with eagerness and ambition. Soft. Enjoys snuggling. Someone he can be honest with, but also someone he doesn’t completely understand. Someone who makes him laugh. Someone who makes an effort to understand him, even when it is hard. Hard worker. Talented. Smart. Someone who doesn’t allow him to take himself seriously. Someone who meshes with his friends, or bare minimum won’t take those friends away from him.
48. How do they express love?
In the dramatic ways, like risking his life. Also in mundane ways, like kissing on top of the head, or running errands on a busy day, or making sure that the beloved who fell asleep doing homework gets all the way into bed with a warm blanket.
49. If this person were to get into a fist fight, what is their fighting style like?
… at this point, I am going to defer to the master and tell you to just re-read the books. Like damn what do you want me to SAY.
50. Is this person afraid of dying? Why or why not?
No, but he would prefer not to. He doesn’t lose sleep over the inevitable, though.

LOADING PRE-ENROLMENT ASSESSMENT RESULTS...
the applicant is JEO HAJOON, aged TWENTY-FOUR, hailing from a family of FIRE. a RECURVE BOW was selected for his assessments. mental assessment shows that he has an aptitude for INTELLIGENCE. applicant has passed all other elemental and physical assessments and is deemed suitable for training at the academy.
WELCOME, INTELLIGENCE SPECIALIST. PLEASE FIND YOUR DORM IN WEST WING ROOM 2B.
Living in a family that hails the elements of Air and Nature, the lads temperamental being was labelled as uncontrollable and too much for his adoptive parents and siblings as the lad gets in trouble for blatantly saying his opinions out loud, almost classifying him as one who has anger issues. Might be elemental generalization. Ha Joon wanted to tear himself away from the shadow of his older sisters, the thirst of always proving himself was always there. Every achievement he received was always topped by something his sisters did. “Fire descendants are great’ this ‘Fire elements are respected’ that. Where was that for the past 17 years of his life.
As soon as Ha Joon turned 18, he went to Maruhan University, permanently moving from to East of Maruhan’s wall as he lived his life living up in the North. Ha Joon aka Slade took up Speech and Language Pathology as his college degree, a relatively unknown course as it was overshadowed by its OT’s and PT’s, being in the same field of Rehabilitation Sciences. There, he was able to aid fairies with troubled speech from their battles or accidents from training. In his four years in Maruhan University, the lad seemingly bulked up for having to workout in order to keep up with the stressful environment of being in a Medical related field. In his part time, he short learned how to use a Martin Jaguar, a kind of bow that fits the lad perfectly; allowing him to aim with accuracy.
While in M.U., Slade was able to adjust his personality, adapting from the pleasant attributes of his friends. He is someone you can quite label as a people pleaser as he can tweak his personality to the person he’s talking to. You can frequently hear them say to him “Oh wow, you really get me!” but it just might be his people pleasing personality and ability to mirror them as well, probably also because he’s a sweet talker ( self proclaimed ).
After a two year break after graduating Maruhan University, he tried his luck to enter in SEOHAE MAGIC ACADEMY, entering in as a Specialist for Intelligence. Sure, he is physically fit for combat. But, Slade’s motto has always been “Stable Under Pressure” thus having to not literally and figuratively stumble when it comes to having rash decisions; having the ability to make quick decisions in midst of time pressure. With this, he wanted offer his abilities in helping others plan their getaways if there would be any trouble, probably helping them to survive.

Rockets Championship Odds 3000 After Signing DeMarcus Cousins Does He Make Them a Better Bet? added to SmartSport on Trello
Smart Sport added the card Rockets Championship Odds 3000 After Signing DeMarcus Cousins Does He Make Them a Better Bet? to the Rockets Championship Odds +3000 After Signing DeMarcus Cousins – Does He Make Them a Better Bet? list in the SmartSport board at November 24, 2020 at 11:24AM Rockets Championship Odds +3000 After Signing DeMarcus Cousins – Does He Make Them a Better Bet? https://www.sportsbettingdime.com/news/nba/rockets-championship-odds-3000-after-signing-demarcus-cousins/ DeMarcus Cousins is joining the Houston Rockets on a one-year deal Cousins, one of the league’s premier scorers in his prime, has been hit hard by injuries over the last three years Does his addition make Houston a more viable championship contender? It wasn’t too long ago that DeMarcus Cousins was one of the NBA’s premier scorers. The 6-foot-10, 270 pound big man is just four years removed a 25/12/5 campaign, but a rash of injuries over the last few seasons have derailed his career. Now at age 30, the four-time all-star is joining Houston on a one-year deal, but his arrival isn’t making oddsmakers any more bullish on the Rockets’ title prospects. 2021 NBA Championship Odds Team Odds to Win Los Angeles Lakers +300 Los Angeles Clippers +550 Milwaukee Bucks +550 Boston Celtics +1300 Miami Heat +1500 Houston Rockets +3000 Odds taken Nov. 23rd at DraftKings. Houston remains a longshot in the 2021 NBA Championship odds, with a price tag of anywhere between +3000 to +3200 depending on which online sportsbook you visit. Those odds are right in line with where they’ve been all week, and longer than they were a week ago. 2021 NBA Eastern and Western Conference Odds Tracker Read More Don’t Call It a Comeback Cousins’ one-year deal is for the veteran’s minimum, the most the Rockets could afford to offer. He missed all of last season with a torn ACL, an injury he suffered after signing with the eventual champion LA Lakers. Breaking: DeMarcus Cousins has agreed to a one-year deal with the Rockets, per @espn_macmahon pic.twitter.com/uR77sX18HF — SportsCenter (@SportsCenter) November 23, 2020 His injury troubles started back in 2018 in New Orleans, when he ruptured his Achilles tendon, which cost him the second half of that season as well as most of 2019. When he did return in 2019, this time with Golden State, he fell victim to a torn quad, which kept him out of most of the Warriors’ playoff run. He’s reportedly back to full health, and impressed Houston enough during a recent workout to warrant a contract offer. It remains to be seen if he’ll ever recapture his pre-2018 form, but at the very least he should help the Rockets address a glaring need. Houston Desperate For Help Down Low Houston’s rebounding numbers in the second half of last season were downright embarassing. They had a rebounding percentage of 44.6, which extrapolated over a full season, would be the worst mark in over two decades. Tucker at center, and Cousins will be an instant upgrade over him. Boogie has averaged 10.9 rebounds a game over his career, and has multiple seasons with over 12 boards per contest on his resume. His presence on the court could help alleviate some of the offensive workload from James Harden and Russell Westbrook, that is of course if they’re still on the team. Fade the Rockets If oddsmakers aren’t all of a sudden bullish on Houston, you probably should’t be either. Neither Harden or Westbrook want to be there, and it’s doubtful the addition of Cousins changes that. James Harden, Russell Westbrook, DeMarcus Cousins and Christian Wood. I have no idea what’s gonna happen, or if they’ll ever play a minute together, but this could be fun. pic.twitter.com/mstq2mptf0 — Roosh (@RooshWilliams) November 23, 2020 The Harden to Brooklyn saga is reportedly cooling for now, but if you thought a happy James Harden was miserable to play with, imagine what a disgruntled one will be like. The Cousins signing improves the Rockets in the short term, but it pails in comparison to what the reigning champs have done. The LA Lakers have made significant moves in free agency to bolster an already strong roster. With a retooled Lakers team, plus a Clippers squad that features Kawhi and Paul George in the way, Houston will remain more of a pretender than a contender.
