The heroes chose to accept this bargain, and scratched their session. In doing so they jumpstarted the reality in which the twenty-four figures of legend would together be created - and I as well - and then sent back in time to take our places in history. Though I was delivered well before history even began, before the dawning of life on their planet. This time around, I would oversee its development, and thus fulfill the mother's promise of an aggressive, ruthlessly prepared group of heroes. One that would not rest until victory was secured.

It sounds like Scratch's changes weren't really about combat ability at all. Instead, he was more concerned with ensuring the trolls were psychologically prepared to face the game. We don't really know what made the pre-Alternians so bad at Sgrub, but Scratch solved any and all such problems by replacing them with a group of belligerent power-gamers who sought to conquer the universe they made. Thanks, Doc!

Also – this might be a little pedantic, but did the post-Scratch session really count as a victory? I mean, when your frog is terminal, your universe is sealed off, and your species is almost extinct, can you really say you won?

The pre-Alternians might have grounds to sue, is what I’m trying to say.

The young twenty-four would again be scattered in two groups, twelve modern contemporaries, and twelve ancients. But in addition to losing their memories of everything that had happened before the scratch, there was another catch for the failed heroes. In the new reality, they would not serve as the heroes. They would mature to become the ancestors of the twelve they formerly regarded as theirs, and this twelve would be chosen for glory.

I speculated that the kids might change Guardians after the reboot - but for some reason, I never even considered that a Guardian could become a Player. If this is how a Scratch actually works...

This... this changes everything. This is Act 6's hidden twist - the fact that we're not going to be getting our kids at all. Homestuck's new heroes, the next session's champions, are Joan Egbert, Roxy Lalonde, Dale Strider, and...

Jesus christ, everything fits. He's a child with Grandpa’s mannerisms because they’re time-duplicates, and it's looking increasingly likely that memories can bleed between the two. He recognizes Jade as his 'grandmother' because in his timeline, Jade arrived before he did, and became the new matriarch of the Harley family. He knows about Earth culture because he grew up on another Earth. His access to the bunny's endgame weapons... is still a little confusing, actually, but this fits literally everything else. I am absolutely, 100% confident that this is the answer to Homestuck's most maddening riddle.

I can't fucking believe what I'm reading. Literally every prediction I have about Homestuck's future is going to have to change.

Meenah's use of Roxy as a coercive surrogate is a reenactment of her mentor Scratch performing the same trick on Rose with the Tumor. understanding that the Matriorb and the Tumor aren't just thematic and visual mirrors of each other but in fact serve the very same function in Rose and Roxy's mirrored arcs, though, we can identify another way in which Meenah becomes a symbolic player in the Lalonde family trauma; Meenah's also perpetuating a trick that Scratch once pulled on her!

Meenah having rejected motherhood early on in her Beforan life, when Scratch made sure her session was unwinnable and thus forced a reset, he was essentially setting up an elaborate scam ensuring that her quest leads up to this moment where she's forced to hatch a big troll egg. but where Rose hatching the Tumor was a "suicide mission" intended primarily to ensure her own destruction (with twin Dave coming along as collateral), Meenah sets the bomb off with the aim of ensuring her whole team's rebirth - setting up her new life post-scratch, she's forced to symbolically take on the role of mother to all trollkind (a burden which will only be lifted from her millennia later, with her death and the passing of the Tumor-in-Matriorb-form over to Kanaya).

while we can ascribe Meenah's late arrival to the dream bubbles to the temporal whims of the Furthest Ring, or even to the obscure motivations of the Horrorterrors responsible for them, having made the connection between Tumor and Matriorb it also brings to mind the immense spans of time it can take for troll genes to make their way through the incestuous slurry and finally be born, millennia after their ancestors have died. in fact the chronology of Dave and Rose's ascension even seems to hint at this same concept in action; while the pair presumably ascend instantaneously on their slabs the moment the bomb goes off, Aradia waits for some time at the pre-existing Sun for them to actually emerge from its surface, still engulfed in the flames that destroyed them. the Green Sun/incestuous slurry is like the Furthest Ring itself - they are mediums without a conventional flow of time, entry into which is not necessarily a reliable indicator of when you'll get out.

yeah i see it. in eridan's case, you can shift the view to something like kanaya bestowing wizardry upon him and also taking it away.

could be wrong since this is off the top of my head, but wizard stuff has ties to said women underestimating their own abilities and depending on an outside source to lend them their powers or being forced to take upon those powers to carry out the outside source's bidding. those outside powers tend to be LE or the outer gods.

as for puppets, im not entirely sure why puppets/robots were chosen as metaphors for the oppressors? maybe something about being willing to act as puppets for LE. probably more about the type of influence those characters have (or attempt to) on others. lil cal was literally a puppet but managed to entice people willing to listen and/or were vulnerable enough to. same w doc scratch actually.

i wouldnt say its a dichotomy exactly, but they're def themes that attach to femininity and masculinity and to each other. nice ask.

Soo, uhh, what's the story on how kankri got his sign and all? As an ancestor lover, I'm curious about what happened to kankri's ancestor. Was it one of feferi's first instances of being a cruel empress? (idk if that's what I should say, but oh well) Does kankri have a vague idea of what happened (if something bad did happen) like how karkat had an idea of what happend to the sufferer/signless?

the symbol came from the same place - the irons that bound the signless hand, but how it came to be is a pretty different story.

im trying to think bout it from the classpect angle - like how in canon the signless was post scratch kankri, so his abilities as a seer of blood allowed him to get glimpses from his pre scratch life, which inspired him to try and change things for the better. but in the au, its karkat who's in the role of the signless, and he aint no seer, hes a knight, he protects with his aspect and protects his aspect. i think the blood powers would carry some memories as well, maybe not so clear like how it was for kankri, but karkat would get the vague feeling of this is wrong.

i think hed see what feferi as empress was trying to do, and would be like "wait a fucking minute she just tries to treat lower classes like some kind of animals that have to be under care of highbloods" and hed be PISSED bc hed rather die than have some highblood asshole coddle him his whole life just bc of his blood mutation.

so hed be like "actually fuck you and fuck the monarchy" and hed start preaching bout the better world where all the blood castes have a say in how their society works (like how it was on tb!beforus) and karkats really good at getting people to follow him. so thats how the movement against the empress would start, and when the news about the revolution would reach feferi she would be pissed then, bc she wants a better life for them and this is how theyre repaying her, by wanting to overthrow her?? and it spirals from here into karkats execution and feferi becoming more and more paranoid

as for if kankri knows how things went, well he does! he gets visions of his past and future selves through dreams, some are nice, but most of the time theyre terryfying (so he just,, stops sleeping). its a mix between his time on beforus and how society was like there, some of karkats memories as the signless get into it too as they're kinda bound by blood ie. the ancestry stuff, and also he gets some visions of the post-game on earth c! those are his favourite. im thinking hard bout everyones aspects, i also liked the idea of kankri being able to "sense" past and future relationships between ppl (for example he can vaguely tell when ppl have history between them and if its positive or not, or he just gets one look at roxy and porrim and goes "yeah theyre gonna be insufferably in love"), its all a work in progress tho!

An actual summary of Homestuck Act 6's intermissions

by someone who’s a page away from Collide

Let’s do this lightning-round style.

After breaking through the fourth wall on the ship and getting the Gift of Gab (lol), John and Jade prepare for a three-year-long voyage to meet up with the gang, with Davesprite, Nannasprite, and a variety of other faces in tow. They write a letter for the crew.

The Monarch (previously the Mendicant) and the firefly buddy (I've forgotten their name) plead for the Vagabond's life. She takes him to the trolls and kid's rendezvous spot.

The trolls finally meet up with Dave and Rose, who have indeed reached God Tier. Half-dead Sollux and GT Aradia show up as well. They plan to host a "funeral" for Sollux, who is just sort of watching in disgust.

After Karkat's bucket-human-troll-sloppy-fueled breakdown from John's letter, the Vagabond, and the firefly show up, and the gang sets off through the Furthest Ring.

Intermission 2

Hussie, who was taking care of Spades Slick after he fucking killed the world by shooting Snowman, is shot dead by Lord English. I'm sure he'll show up later though. They always do.

It's been about a year in between the intermissions. While Rose explains what the Scratch did, Karkat attempts to explain the troll love quadrants to Dave. They draw dicks, fight, Dave wins by a mile through the suplex

Meanwhile, John, Jade and friends play the Ghostbusters II MMORPG, which is hilarious that that is even a thing in the first place. Jaspersprite sings a birthday song for him, Jade gets dogmad, which causes John to black out.

After getting harrassed by an eepy Roxy, John encounters Meenah (the best character!!!!!) for the first time. He takes a trident from her and wakes back up.

In a dream bubble, Terezi meets Aranea (second best character!!!!), who offers her to heal her sight. In another dream bubble, Hussie proposes to Vriska with a ring. Because of course he does.

Intermission 3 (and some other stuff)

Aranea invites Jake to Meenah's dream bubble, where she finds quite a lot of fighting happening. After telling a story of the Condensce, Jake embarrasses himself by attempting to wallop Meenah. He wakes up after getting whacked, but Brain Ghost Dirk sticks around.

After a "quick" game of Meenah Quest, we get a glimpse of what John and Jade are up to; watching Con Air baybee!!!! Except John has a big freakout over hating the movie, hating Davesprite, and passes out. What a guy.

PM and Noir are locked in chase before they enter a bubble of Jack's own massacre of the Battlefield, before John awakens and fights him. Rose shows up for a brief second and John uses his cool-ass windy powers as well.

After the battle, John wanders into a desert, finds a ring, and finds Tavros (wHO DESPERATELY WANTS THE RING,) and Vriska. She shares her plan to find a treasure that'll defeat Lord English.

After another game of Meenah Quest (where she unsuccessfully gets no one on her team), we go back to the meteor, where Rose drinks and forgets her date with Kanaya (best couple. fight me) and then falls down the stairs. They warned her, dog.

John wakes up with the ring, soyjaks, and the intermission ends.

Intermission 5 (CALIBORN TOOK uP THE LAST SPOT)

Dave and Karkat intervene Terezi, who is a massive wreck because of her degrading romance with Gamzee and letting Aranea heal her eyesight.

John, Vriska, Aranea, Meenah and Aradia find a big green cave in a dream bubble, where they also find a juju. It's the Homestuck House! John sticks his hand in it, his arm appears throughout multiple points in the comic, and then voops out of reality completely. He has an INTENSE STAREDOWN with Caliborn and wakes up on LOMAX, Jake's planet.

Vriska comes back (thanks to John's time shenanigans), plans out everything to come and verbally abuses her ghost self, Dave and Dirk have a feelings jam, dead pre-retcon Terezi and Ghost Vriska rejoice in facing the end, and everybody just about gets ready to

Collide.

This has been by far one of the most bonkers pieces of fiction I have ever read, and nothing gets me more excited than to see all of it come together and wrap all of it up, I hope. Also Caliborn and Calliope are one of the best "Jekyll/Hyde" characters I've seen in a long while!

Whatever lies on the other side of that hyperlink, I sure hope it'll be good.

see i agree that ectobiology is simple but ive tried explaining it to irl non-homestuck friends before and ppl will get genuinely stumped at the question "if two people combine their dna and a new person comes out, what is that new person to them?" i had one friend who seemed to grok what Reproduction was and i thought, okay, maybe i can move onto the slightly more complex stuff. and then she got hung up for 20 minutes on stable time loops. maybe people just dont want to put in the effort for hs

on some level i think it's pretty easy to understand why "two people's DNA combined in a lab = their child" is not necessarily an instantaneously intuitive line of thinking for everyone in the world like i'm sure there are countless works of science fiction that take a completely different approach. but the thing is and i made a post kind of angling at this just the other day that WITHIN THE INTERNAL LOGIC OF HOMESTUCK there has never been any question as to that being how it works. even if these people somehow got through the comic blinking for every single page of the initial ectobiology sequence do they just think it's just random jokes without meaning when dave refers to rose as his sister or roxy as his mother... but like i said before you still find people who try to gripe that "being mixed from the same slime as a lab doesn't make you brother and sister" so there are evidently some readers who do grasp the mechanics of what's going on but just refuse to accept the actual story that is being told to them. nightmare world

given how widespread misunderstanding about the scratch is i think i do just have to concede that there must have been some aspects of it that were poorly explained. obviously if you actually get what a paradox clone is it's pretty easy to grasp the scratch at least as it relates to ectobiology but i absolutely agree that if i were to make a poll like "does the scratch a) erase the old timeline and replace it with a new one b) create two independent timelines" the results would be skewed disastrously in favour of the incorrect options...

honestly i would say there are hanging questions about this even by the end of the comic, in the sense that a hard difference is never really drawn between a "retcon" (which is explicitly compared in function to the scratch) and conventional time travel. and obv the important point here is that there IS no meaningful difference between a "timeline" and a "continuity" and that therefore the distinction is not important but again this was evidently not made clear enough to readers who continue to claim "the pre-retcon version of" x character was "forgotten about"... which is probably fundamentally the same philosophical reason people struggle to grapple with the scratch (and by extension ectobiology). like the "two different people can be the same character" thing is just such an enduring sticking point

More than likely she will wrap her arms around you and lift you off of the ground so that you do not have to stand up anymore. ✦ Roxy's Green Room has been customized for you so that there are plenty of chairs and a sick purple and green racecar bed for you to lay down on. The lights can also dim in the room so that you can lie down and rest without any of the bright lights on you. ✦ Whenever you start to get headaches or aches on your body, Roxy is fast to produce an ice pack to hold to your head and she will massage any spots that ache on you. Sometimes she offers you to pet her hair and tells you to close your eyes while she takes care of you. ✦ Roxy has loads of snacks in her room stashed away for you as well. Lots of salty foods and sweet foods so that your body has a nice balance of foods to keep your head from hurting too much. ✦ Roxy had to practice on lots of S.T.A.F.F bots (rest in pieces to the multiple bots that got their heads crushed or scratched up) to ensure she did not hurt you with her claws, but she learned how to give you head massages to help ease some of your pain during the day. ✦ "We don't have to do anything today. I am more than happy laying in bed with you and just existing with you. You make me so happy. Here, you lay in bed and I will use a cold face roller on you. How does that sound?" ✦ You do not really have to worry about walking around, Roxy will carry you on her back or she will let you drive around in her racing cart (or she will drive you around). Monty gets extremely confused and sometimes will chase the car around (it seems playful but you can never be too sure). ✦ Roxy tries to do yoga and meditation with you to help you self-medicate for your fatigue. She also uses her internal database to come up with all sorts of methods to help take care of you. Roxy likes to argue that her kisses are the best kind of medication for you and you alone.

Right, so Jane's a Prospit dreamer - and Jake must be the same, since she saw him there earlier. No surprises there.

UU: the place yoU visited was called prospit. it is where i have woken Up every time i have gone to sleep for most of my life.

But this is a big surprise.

UranianUmbra is a Player, and I can't figure out what session they could possibly fit into. Their grey text initially made me wonder if they were the pre-Scratch Signless - but Kid Signless wouldn't need to type in grey, would he? On a peaceful Alternia, he'd have no reason to fear culling, and could happily type in red.

What other sessions are available, then? Jane's, maybe? A fifth interloper to this reset session would certainly be an interesting twist - but it doesn't gel with the rules of the Scratch as they've been presented, and I don't think it fits the narrative.

I guess the only other possibility is that UU is in a fifth session, completely distinct from the four we're aware of.

UU: my prospit is an alternate version from yoUrs, in a completely different session qUite far afield of yoUr reality. UU: if we are ever to meet in person, it is Unlikely to be while playing oUr respective games!

And yes, that does appear to be the case.

...well, I suppose UU could just be bullshitting us, but I don't think that's the case. Bringing a fifth session into the mix is just too juicy to be a mere cover story. I'm pretty sure I believe it - and I have three main theories about what kind of session they're a part of.

Namely:

UU is part of the session which created Alternia’s universe.

UU is starting a session inside the kids' new universe.

UU's session is both of those things at once.
