I finished up my episode poster series for Season 1 of Severance... and here it is! I'll wrap up my Season 2 designs this weekend after the finale drops tomorrow night. This was a really fun project to focus on in my spare time over the last 7 weeks and I hope fellow fans of the show like the results. I'll be adding/restocking prints of all 19 episode designs to my shop on Saturday (after I design the poster for Cold Harbor) so stay tuned.

Is there a specific reason you think Fields is the source of anxiety about Burt going to hell? When Burt tells the story, Burt indicates it's himself that is certain.

Hi there! I'm not so sure what to do with the source of anxiety phrasing/angle, personally that's not what I'm concerned about. If anything, Burt seemed more at ease than Fields at all times and Irving was giving major atheist vibes so of course he didn't care imo.

The basics of that scene to me are: show Fields is a terrible husband, really uncomfortable married couple to have dinner with (especially when you're attracted to one of them), show that Burt is lying and hiding something about his Lumon past and add to the lore of religion and Lumon, specifically religion as propaganda for Lumon.

So okay here's what I have: I do, it's in text, Fields seems to be more of a radical religious man than Burt and for them it seems to be as much of Burt going to hell as it is about Burt's innie going to heaven (with Fields).

Fields is clearly judgemental and self-righteous (think about what kind of person would be convinced they're going to heaven) and smirks when Burt says he was a scoundrel during his teenage years, in a tone that feels quite ashamed and Fields only reinforces that shame with the smirk and the "to say the least" attitude. When Irving says "so the plan was for Burt's innie to go to heaven" (Turturro's eyes shift from one to another, the question is directed at the couple, not individually), Burt says "yes" and once again Fields, quite more cheerfully and determinated than Burt, goes "with me". And of course he's bitter as hell because accordingly to his interpretation (which btw seems to be inaccurate within his Lutheran church according to a post I read on theology), Burt's innie is already in heaven. With Irving's innie. Oops, talk about a backfire.

Do I also think Burt is convinced he's going to hell? Sure, why not! But we just have to agree it's quite a different thing when your husband – the person you're the closest with, the person you allegedly chose to share your entire life with, the person who knows your story better than anyone else – is convinced of the same. Personally that's one of the most subtle toxic things I can think of in a marriage. It would matter even if Burt was an atheist, imho.

All in all, I dare say Burt sounds almost casual about the whole religious conversation? You can see in Burt's body language too, contrived and ashamed with Fields, open and smiling with Irving, extra supported by that last scene where he literally says he wants to meet Irving again without Fields.

A point that was brought up because of that post of mine that was meant to be a funny post and nothing else btw: Burt is lying, including about the severance sermon and why he decided to sever. Yes, I believe this to be partially true. Learning he was at Lumon before severance was public (which then undermines the lie about him learning about severance during the sermon) opens a whole new can of worms about his character so we must all thread carefully and add our assumptions to the conspiracy board on post-it notes and *, not permanent markers.

Considering the info we have (which is just a few crumbs really), I dare say that IF Burt's severance idea was HIS OWN plan and maybe an attempt to return to Lumon to spy on them, a lot like Irving, and he knew about severance before it became public, it was HIS idea to conveniently take Fields to that severance sermon because he knew that the whole soul talk would interest a man who's convinced his partner is going to hell and then pretend they made the decision as a couple. Even if all this is true, even if Burt had this mastermind plan and it was his initiative, it does not change the fact that Fields thinks his husband is such a wicked piece of trash he's doomed to suffer for eternity. And he eats and drinks his wine while saying this. That is fucked up! That is not love! So that's basically my issue with Fields, not about deeming one of them "guilty" and the other "innocent".

Now more than ever I am looking forward to that scene with Irv, Burt and the bestest boy around aka Radar because honestly I have no idea where that will go. Do I want old man yaoi having spy sex in church? When don't I want that? But we'll see.
