Plague Ponies — Masterpost

Plague Ponies is my go at an MLP Infection AU! inspired by the wave of new MLP horror content on TikTok. All PP posts will be tagged as Plague Ponies, and general non-au fanart will be tagged as pony posting.

Plague Ponies will be a little bit of a slow-burn, focusing on character interactions when the stakes are much higher than they were during most of the show.

This is a grimdark, so things will get a little grim, a little dark. The standard blood, death, gore, body horror, and toxic situationships. There will be doomed yuri, corruption arcs, redemption arcs, regression arcs, and lots of angst.

What I will NOT be including in this series:

• Sexual/birth horror (rape, necrophilia, infant death, infant mutilation, graphic depictions of abortion, forced pregnancy)

• Mental illness diagnoses in character profiles (and no “insanity meters” or uses of common mlp grimdark “classics” such as Cupcakes-esque Pinkimina, crazy Twilight, Little Miss Rarity, etc.)

While I love dark, psychological horror, I want to treat these characters with integrity and not rely on shock value. I love the infection aus I’ve been seeing, but too many of them veer into being distasteful for the sake of nostalgia or something. I personally think we’ve grown past that phase of the fandom.

The first half of Plague Ponies will be focusing on Ponyville, taking place shortly after season 4, episode 7 (Bats!), focusing on the Mane Six and various background characters shown throughout the show. I created this wanting to explore character personalities, but everything is based on my own interpretation of the characters, so it may be a little different from someone else’s vision of the show.

While I will feature some characters from later seasons in the show, I didn’t really watch it regularly after season 4, so later editions to the Ponyverse may not show up. Sorry Tirek.

As I upload I’ll edit this post and link the “episodes” so it’s all in one place.

But it made me think that fem characters aren’t really a thing in bl. I’ve watched SCOY but apart from that is there any bl works that have a fem main character that isnt a “joke” and has a love interest?

Negl I'm absolutely desperate for more fem (main) characters in BL but sadly, you're right, there aren't many main characters who fit the description. There aren't even many side characters who fit the description (and even fewer fem side characters who aren't primarily there for comedic relief).

Like, I loved Green in 2Together. I wish the story had treated him better and I still follow Gun Korawit on ig hoping he'll get more roles soon because he's so lovely (the same goes for Bruce Sirikorn who I just adore and who finally FINALLY got a lovely side role in Step by Step).

It always makes me really sad when I browse the comment section of MDL or the hellscape that is x (or even reddit) and people are just so dismissive and cruel when it comes to fem BL characters or even actors - calling them annoying or unattractive. They want their "ukes" not to be too manly (whatever that even means) but never in a confident or unapologetic or flirty way. And let's not even go into what they think of fem characters who don't fit the stereotypical "bottom" cliché...

That being said, there's probably a spectrum here for what makes a BL character fem. Some people might include characters like Yai in Big Dragon or Pete in Love By Chance (or Fluke Natouch in pretty much every single one of his BL roles - most of which I actually disagree with lmao) but let me give you a few examples of feminine main characters in (Thai - because that's most of what I watch) BL that I'm really vibing with:

PP Krit as Oh-aew in I Told Sunset About You & I Promised You the Moon. Because if you're not at least a little bit in love with Oh-aew then I don't even know. 🥰

Tootsies and the Fake and its series prequel Diary of Tootsies - this is more a queer comedy than BL but I absolutely adore it. Very funny, very cute and heartwarming too. 💜

James Supamongkon as Uea in Bed Friend - if you like your fem characters confident and sexy (with an incredibly upsetting backstory - be warned) then this series is for you.

Pak Naphat as Namnuea in Wedding Plan - Nuea is the softest, thirstiest, cutest boy. This Mame series is often overlooked because it isn't as dramatic as her usual stuff but I liked it a lot when I watched it.

Earth Katsamonnat as Seeiw in My Only 12% - because Seeiw in the latter half of the series is the most confident we've seen Earth since Until We Meet Again (but personally I'm still waiting for the day when I can see Earth play someone in overknees and a cute skirt 🥰)

Turbo Chanokchon as Anda in Love Stage!! (the Thai remake) - so what if I needed to lie down for a bit when Anda wore that wedding dress and wig etc. That's a completely normal reaction. (Turbo also had a small side role in Nitiman and he looked so elegant and confident there that he totally stole each scene he was in).

Fluke Natouch as Krit in Make a Wish - this one never had an international release but if you can track it down with fansubs then it's a cute little watch and Fluke looks amazing in it. This series also has Pon Thanapon (Jeff in Pit Babe) in a side role and that's always a plus.

Tor Atagorn as Nail in For Him is simply GORGEOUS! The series is still ongoing and recently lost some of its steam but Nail's styling remains meticulous!

may's candid and personal take on fandom

On a more candid note, I’d like to talk more about my experience as a writer in fandom. I spent a long time thinking about this (a better part of the last six months, on and off) as I am usually trying to keep my opinions to myself due to events that are long ago now.

I really need you all to be kinder to writers.

I have been here since sometime around May 2020 and I think it is telling that the fandom circles around the same problems again and again and nothing ever changes.

Interaction is really low and I am not the first writer to lament this, nor will I be the last one but maybe I have this naïve hope that if enough people read the same thing again and again, it will finally stick. I know I haven’t put out content on a regular basis for a long time now but while it is not directly related to the level of interactions these works get, that rhythm will for sure not improve if interaction stays as low as it is. It can be really disheartening to know you have over a thousand followers and the reblogs/comments on your works do not even exceed 50.

Obviously, the way tiktok and fast paced social media work have influenced how we interact with things on all kinds of platforms. But I really need you all to understand that a like on tumblr does not count the way it does on Instagram or maybe even tiktok. That is a bookmark at best. Do I mind if you serial like an entire series of mine? Of course not, I am happy to see that someone is actively reading something of mind and enjoying it. But please have the courtesy to maybe comment on the masterlist or the most recent part.

Fandom is taking and giving and I think it is unfair that it is somehow is expected of writers to pump out story after story without having to give them something (comments, asks, reblogs) for it. And when someone complains about it, suddenly we are deemed as ungrateful to the few that actually read our stuff.  

Back in lockdown, there was more of a balance for obvious reasons. But now that I see that writers cannot post as much due to real life or maybe other reasons, it is like the number of notes has diminished across the board. Writers in fandom are people who are not (and cannot be) paid for their works. (Side note: If you accept fanfiction commissions or money for fanfiction, I will find you quicker than the mouse mafia because you will not ruin this for us.) On one hand, the expectation seems to be that writers should update ever single week without fail. On the other hand, it seems too big an ask of readers to actually comment/reblog the things that they read.

(Waiting for a new chapter for weeks, months, hell, even years, was never unusual in fandom spaces and I need this to be more common knowledge.)

Then again, the negativity in fandom has really fucking increased. It comes and goes in wavesand I will not pretend to be affected because I was so inactive this last year. (This is simply a side note but it is something that I think needs more attention: The way I see poc creators treated is despicable and while I do not write for PP characters anymore because of all the drama, people really need to reflect how they see Pedro Pascal as a human being instead of a sex object.)

For me, personally, I have noticed that if I get genuinely angry at something happening on tumblr, it is time for me to log off and really focus on real life and I think it is something that we all should take to heart. Sadly, the more time passes, the more I am convinced that this fandom might not even be worth it anymore and I genuinely understand many creators who decide to leave permanently. It often feels like people are just there to create drama or to vague or that important and serious posts about how we should treat each other and the actors we admire are simply ignored in favour of the “I don’t like drama.” line. Which, like, one is drama and one is not. (Spoiler alert: Discussions on fandom inclusion and racism within fandom are not drama.)

Anyway, Readers need to be more mindful of the power they have over writers and if you want to complain that so many creators have deactivated or become inactive, I would like to ask that you reflect on when was the last time that you commented on someone’s fic.

[Week 3] Digital Community: Tumblr Case Study

These days, the development of digital technology is becoming more and more explosive. They are widespread and popular everywhere, making anyone of any age want to become "more digital". 

With the rapid development of digital technology, a series of social networking platforms have appeared to help people connect, share, or serve various personal purposes such as Facebook, Instagram, X (Twitter), TikTok, etc.. Among the social networking platforms that many people are interested in, Tumblr impresses with its differences.

What is Tumblr? What makes Tumblr unique?

"Tumblr is whatever you want it to be."

Tumblr is a microblogging and social networking platform founded in 2007 by David Karp. This is an interesting platform to develop an online community where users can create personal blogs or microblogs and post content in many different formats like posts, videos, images, GIFs, or even music without the length limit of the post. Through many years of development, Tumblr has had up to 519 million Tumblr Blogs by 2024 and hundreds of billions of posts on it.

Tumblr not only attracts users with its ability to support multimedia through posts, but it also attracts users with many unique features that not every platform has

Absolute privacy

Just using one email, users can create many different blog pages. Different from other platforms like Facebook, these block pages can be given any name depending on the user. It can be a name, nickname, or anonymous. Tumblr provides a high level of anonymity and allows users complete freedom to share without providing any information.

Moreover, when in "safe mode", Tumblr allows users to set up their accounts to only display valid accounts (not minors), allowing users to choose the content considered safe or sensitive content.

Interaction

Tumblr allows everyone to see public posts without having to log in. At the same time, Tumblr allows users to follow other accounts without requiring a mutual connection, promoting a non-reciprocal social network. In particular, online status is not provided to others. Therefore, this is a great feature for "stalkers" who want to search for anyone's information.

Users who log in to their accounts can like, follow, or repost content on their blogs. At the same time, users also can add or delete blogs they follow, as well as block others from accessing their blogs.

Hashtags space

Tumblr provides a large space dedicated to hashtags, facilitating the discovery of content with similar topics, and making it easier for users to search. At the same time, users' self-created hashtags can also make them have a unique impression.

Tumblr - a potential online brand community

According to Mousavi, Roper, and Keeling (2017), an online brand community (OBC) provides an opportunity for people to transform their identities through active participation in communities and the adoption of shared norms and values.

Tumblr fits perfectly with the concept of OBC. With incognito mode and no distinction between regular and verified accounts, all users on Tumblr are equal. They can share personal opinions and connect with people who share their ideals. Users can live true to themselves, comfortably and freely without fear of anyone's judgment. These features help users connect through common interests and personalities, and help them bond into a community. One of the typical examples is the strong growth of the LGBTQ+ community on Tumblr.

In conclusion, Tumblr is a unique social networking platform with special features, that help users interact, connect and post posts publicly or anonymously. The uniqueness of Tumblr has created an equal digital community where everyone can feel free to share and connect.

RTA 950 Topic Summary/Critical Reflection - Journal #2

In Week 8, we discussed the diverse ways that children engage with new media, including how they consume, create, and learn about media technologies and storytelling. As we’ve explored in class, kids in Canada today are engaging with new media in astounding, unprecedented ways. Their technological savvy and innate understanding of media cultures is a fascinating and rapidly-evolving topic, as is the way they learn through and about new media. Of course, strong critical analysis is required to best understand youth media engagement, which is explored in Week 8’s reading → 

In “New Media and Informal Learning” from The Routledge International Handbook of Children, Adolescents, and Media, Rebecca Herr Stephenson describes the relationship between new media and learning through three main frameworks: New Media Literacies, Genres of Participation, and Connected Learning. These frameworks have informed research studies in many disciplines and “...identify technical proficiencies and social practices conducive to successful learning with and through new media” (2021, pp. 467-468). There is a strong emphasis on classifying different types of participation, or literacies, and how they shape young people’s learning and identity-building in the digital age (469). There is also an emphasis on youth organizations and programs that aim to teach these participation skills and help youth navigate unequal educational landscapes (470). As we discussed in class, frameworks are an important method of forming a common consensus about how we talk about children’s media use. They are also critical to understanding how we need to combat barriers to access to ensure that all children develop an understanding of the technologies that will shape their lives. 

While the general Canadian curriculum includes mandatory media education, much of this learning happens outside of traditional classroom contexts. In fact, depending on resources and instructors, it’s arguable that many kids may learn more about new media from their daily Tiktok scroll than a media lesson in school. For this blog post, I want to take a brief look at how “...informal engagement with new media – even when that media is not designed with explicit educational goals in mind – can lead to substantial and valuable learning” (468).

A few weeks ago, I saw a viral tweet by someone whose younger cousin was protesting for Palestine on Roblox. Attached was a video from the server itself, where dozens of blocky avatars were adorned with flags and “Free Palestine” text boxes. At first, I was mostly amused. Roblox has always seemed like the Wild West of gaming to me, and the idea of such serious social discourse on the platform felt a bit silly.

As I scrolled through a series of similar tweets, however, I started to realize just how incredible this situation really was. Virtual activism has been a hot topic for some time now; I distinctly remember when victims of the Stoneman Douglas school shooting in Florida took to social media to launch a campaign against gun violence in the US, rocketing youth/online activism into the national dialogue. However, while a lot of online activism has happened on social media sites such as Instagram and Twitter, the Roblox protests may be one of the first times we’re seeing it unfold on a platform made entirely for kids.

With an average user age of twelve years-old, Roblox players’ engagement with social issues is an unprecedented look into the educational potential of youth-centered new media. Herr Stephenson writes that “Games are opportunities to connect socially, to explore and experiment, develop expertise, and learn to participate with and through media” (471). Activism on Roblox allows kids to learn about social issues that they otherwise may not have exposure to. It also teaches them about the vast potential of new media itself, such as the power of online activism and collective action through the Internet. Finally, this sort of engagement is a valuable form of identity-building for youth; kids’ exploration of social issues within platforms and communities they’re comfortable in allows them to more freely explore their identities and where they situate themselves in the world. It also helps them develop their own values and political stances, independent of their parents. While I explored a more structured, purposeful educational Roblox space for Week 8’s Padlet activity, it’s fascinating to see the different types of learning that comes from such a vibrant platform. I’m genuinely amazed at Roblox’s ability for all kinds of learning, both formal and informal, and how formative it likely is to kids growing up today. 

Of course, there are dangers to youth engagement with new media. While new media provide numerous opportunities for learning and growth, there are equally as many opportunities to learn hate and bigotry, as indicated by the rise of the Alt-Right pipeline.

However, as I explored in my previous blog post, succumbing to “moral panics” about kids’ exposure to media is ineffective and only limits children’s autonomy (Berriman 2022, p. 75). Henry Jenkins puts it best in Week 9’s reading, arguing that “Children and youth do know more about these new media environments than most parents and teachers. In fact, we do not need to protect them so much as engage them in critical dialogues that help them to articulate more fully their intuitive understandings of these experiences” (2009, p. 12). Nobody knows more about youth media cultures than youth themselves. Rather than panic about this evolving landscape, we need to focus on listening to youth perspectives and designing media education that respects their knowledge, agency, and the world they’re growing up in.
