Notes: My original collective financial help project had two goals: actually have those in need be helped by people that had the pockets to do it, instead of other people locked in crisis who wanted to help because they knew, but whose aid also cost them and fed the loop. 

The other goal was to completely eradicate the baring of trauma that happens on every one of those financial help posts to, telling one’s identity, one’s living situation, to actually get people to donate. So I started by just putting people’s Paylinks without any explanations and calling it a day.

But today, I realized that you can help people, without betraying their intimacy, and still give a very short (and anonymous) blurb on why they need the money. And it doesn’t have to involve their trauma, it doesn’t have to surveil their lives, it just states what they need. And probably raises the possibility that the people targeted will dig in their pockets and throw that lettuce.

Animation Night 179: Unicorn Wars

Hey everyone! Real brief blurb tonight because I talked about Alberto Vázquez last week - tonight I'm going to be re-running Unicorn Wars since last week it was way too late for people to attend!

Unicorn Wars could be roughly described as Apocalypse Now with teddy bears. We encounter a world in which a militaristic country of teddies is locked in a revanchist forever-war against the unicorns who now occupy the Magic Forest. It is a conflict in part religious in nature: the bears are convinced that whoever drinks the blood of the last unicorn will enter into a transcendant state of being.

Our story concerns a fresh batch of recruits, sent on a mission that none of them know is sacrificial. Led by a sergeant who has no idea what he's in for and a reserved priest, they set out with grenades and bows and arrows to find out what became of a lost unit.

Our main characters are a pair of brothers, Azulín and Gordi, or Bluey and Tubby as the English sub renders it. Both of them are deeply screwed up by their parents separation and their mothers' death; Azulín in particular, who took more after their father, has a determination to prove himself at whatever cost, and a contemptuous, bullying relationship to his brother.

But we also encountere the rest of the doomed bears and there are some real characters. The bear culture is a fascinating blend of cute fluffy signifiers and militaristic ones, joined into one nihilistically eugenic competition for status. There's a real fascination in the animation with the physicality of the bears' bodies, the way they squish around, messy scenes of eating, and of course a great deal of gore. You see quite a bit of teddybear pp.

Naturally the mission goes south fast. A lurid trip on colourful bugs brings the first casualties - a fantastic blast of psychedelia - but the teddies are also completely unprepared for fighting the unicorns. Or their willingness to murder each other. In the end, Azulín and Gordi are the only survivors, surviving off the land - and then things really take a turn.

Of the unicorns, we learn much less. One unicorn, María, is something of a deuteragonist - desperately searching for her missing sibling, she finds an old church, where the apes of the forest worship a strange, morphing fleshy entity. We do not immediately see what becomes of this - but María ends up falling afoul of the two surviving bears. Azulín attacks Maria while Gordi can only watch; Azulín hits María multiple times but is ultimately pierced by a young unicorn and cast into the river, leaving María alone with Gordi. (In contrast, in the original short, the Gordi analogue kills the Azulín analogue after they kill a unicorn.)

Azulín, horribly injured, washes up back at the main teddybear base, where the military higherups attempt to make a figurehead of him - completely failing to anticipate his capacity to turn their own forces against them and stage a coup. Where the previous command was simply using the war as a way to stay in power, vengeful Azulín is a true zealot and mobilises the full teddybear army against the unicorns. Meanwhile, Gordi has managed to forge an unlikely friendship with the unicorn María who he has nursed back to health after Bluey's attack.

Vázquez is no stranger to blending cute imagery and extremely dark themes. In contrast to Psiconautas, which felt like a story of the forlorn hope of escape against the bleakness of the world, Unicorn Wars seems more bleak and nihilistic. You know none of this is going to end well; the ending pushes it into a direction of alchemical synthesis, and we'll talk about it when we get there in the film.

Unicorn Wars generally looks amazing, vividly coloured and elegantly blending 2D and 3D animation. And well, there's a reason for that: like I Lost My Body, which shared many of the same animators, this is an all-Blender production, using Grease Pencil for 2D animation, and a very inventive process for the unicorns where the 3D render is converted to a 2D grease pencil drawing which can be further edited by the anmiators. The result is that the unicorns get the sense of life that comes from the slightly imperfections 2D animation, and yet the precise perspective of 3D animation. It's a fantastic showcase of what Blender's 2D-in-3D can enable, and it honestly just makes me really happy to see from a tech-art perspective.

In short, Unicorn Wars is an intense, bleak and also very funny film, I loved it. If you have a reasonable threshold for gore, I hope you'll come to see it with me!

I hate to come here and ask for shit (especially as often as this) but things are looking really dire, I’m still unemployed. I might possibly start working in about a month, if everything goes well—but until then I have no income and I’m stacking expenses

It’s been really tough to pay for groceries & necessities every day, I have $4 left in my bank account and I’m ~850 in credit card debt. I’m using credit to pay for all of my therapy, my medication, & my phone bills so the number only goes up 😵‍💫

I watched the film again today because of a discussion in @bootleg317 ‘s channel server, so without further ado here’s my

ABCs of Death rankings

No particular order in each category I wrote each blurb as I watched :) spoilers ahead

Loved

G (drowning is such a horrific way to go, you may disagree but this is a horror short to me. We know how it’s going to end from the beginning and we can only watch, we don’t know why he’s doing this and we can’t help. All we know is a surfer has chosen to end his life the way he loved to spend it, his surfboard sticking out of the water as his headstone. Beautiful)

H (nazis get the bullet even ones that make my pp hard RAHHHHHH LETS GO INGERLAND)

I (the cultural context of this one is incredibly important and it is undeniably horror, a very real horror. It is unfortunate that it requires some background research to truly understand but I say that the not because I know many people won’t do it. Raw in its purest form. The violence against women it’s meant to touch on is given a blind eye, you can’t look away now and that is the point. I actually thoroughly enjoy its place sandwiched between two ridiculous shorts.)

P (I understand why people would skip this one, truly I do so no hard feelings to anyone who doesn’t like it. It’s part of a genre of shorts in this film which I would describe as “the real horror is being a woman” which honestly has so much to pull from. A mother’s love knows no bounds.)

S (s is for SO FUCKING GOOD, the contrast between the campy outlaw action film and the true reality at the end? beautifully executed)

T (an amazing short by an amazing animator, he utilizes his medium so well. I can’t say much without totally spoiling it but another good juxtaposition between fear and reality. The gore and body horror was amazing, we need a little green in our red)

X (it was so wonderful to see so many aspects of the lived experiences of fat women explored, people can pretend that it doesn’t happen but it’s all very real and it damages you down to your very soul. To be treated like a zoo animal that no one wants to look at but everyone wants to sneer and gawk at. So full but so empty. I understand her completely.)

Z (ok listen I know lol but this reminds me of how people describe Tokyo gore police which I’ve yet to watch, the political metaphor done with over the top surrealist horny is amazing. By far my favorite of the Japanese shorts.)

A (better than I remembered, really really interesting concept, lackluster execution)

D (I actually really liked the execution of this one and its twist was very heart wrenching, horrific for this man? Yes horror? No)

Y (the 80s feel was super intriguing, it’s metaphor is clear and executed really interestingly. I get the sense maybe the director was discussing their own experience through art but not in an inaccessible way. Honestly nothing bsd to say! I think the only thing keeping from the top category was the goofy kill. This isn’t a bad category just not my absolute favorite :))

B (boring, scaring a kid is a dick move but I don’t think they deserved to die for that)

F (refused to watch this one all the way through again, but I respect that it’s unapologetically Japanese lol)

L (I honestly struggled to come up with something to say for this one or where to even place it? I guess I’m a little desensitized. It’s an enjoyable watch for what it is and as usual I love the Japanese freak and the little surreal details that were lingered on. Plus 1000 aura)

V (I think this director should have saved this and maybe made a full movie, really interesting concepts all around and a clearly high ass budget)

i've been trying to take notes for game reviews (i feel like the least i can do for games i really love is leave them nice reviews on steam. i dunno. and i guess unhinge my fuckin jaw about them publicly because someday I'll get someone to play them. I've already got people to play falsehoods of pp. let's keep the ball rolling)

i think it's difficult, though, with my brain the way it is and overthinking. like how does one leave a review that is adequate, you know??? adequately expressing the affection??

but after doing the think thonk and trying to boil down why i like these particular games so much (lies of p, the thaumaturge, withering rooms -- to be specific), i think what i love most about all these games is that 1. they all have pretty succinct base experiences, and 2. they all feel very much like labors of love. they feel like games that the developers wanted to make.

and then, with these three games but also most of my other favorite games: resonance, on a personal level. this is a thing that a lot of developers aim for but understandably not every game is going to resonate with every person. like, assassin's creed 3 is my favorite assassin's creed game for narrative reasons (iykyk).

by "succinct base experiences," i mean in the sense that, for these games it feels to me like the developers(*) really considered what they wanted to make, and why. they not only crafted a clear question (a Major Dramatic Question, as in writing), but a game that answers that question, and the design of the game goes into responding to that question. i feel like arguably the thaumaturge is the most "meandering" of the three games, but in turn it bolsters its core themes of pokemon/polish history and culture/SHITTY DADS... or is he? (the thaumaturge tangent here is me trying to say that a lot of the openness of the game is 1. optional, but also 2. again, is helping to answer the core question/experience, imo. like, you don't have to go around finding all the clothes articles to unlock new clothes colors, but hell yeah do i want to read those historical blurbs and get new fashion)

Obviously Levi is number one but ALSOOOO Gojo is a close second. Which surprised me bc I always liked him but I wasnt like HORRIBLY DISGUSTINGLY down bad for him until s2 started tbh. Before that I've always been a Nanami Stan but he was too hard for me to draw and I never wrote anything for him bc he just sounded like Levi when I tried fhdjdfjfjsjdjf

Also I had the biggest obsession for Kogami from psycho pass (I mean I did before YEARS ago but it came back full force the entire time I was in Japan this year. A new psycho pass movie released at the time and bestie was deep in her pp era so ndfjfjdjdjfjf

Another one I don't talk about as much is Kuroo from haikyuu he was my MAN just before the Levi train smacked me in the face LOL I wrote SOOO many little Kuroo x reader blurbs but I just never posted them rahhhh

I think those are the main ones I'd actively think about fairly recently!! Ofc I could go into my whole mystic messenger era but I was a whore for most of the men and jaehee in that game so sdnckdjsjfjdnsnfnfn
