Update on Breonna Taylor's killers:
source
"“Obviously we are devastated at the moment by the Judge’s ruling with which we disagree and are just trying to process everything,” Taylor’s family said in a statement. “The Assistant United States Attorneys on the case have informed us of their plan to appeal. The only thing we can do at this point is continue to be patient. The appeal will extend the life of the case but as we’ve always maintained, we will continue to fight until we get full justice for Breonna Taylor.”
Jaynes and Meany now face misdemeanor charges instead of felonies. Simpson also declined to dismiss a conspiracy charge against Jaynes and a charge against Meany for allegedly lying to the FBI."
No justice
No peace

Thinking about Mass Effect, as you do, and how I'm kind of sad that the way it's been engraved in pop culture has more to do with the way internet reacted to it at the time than what the actual game is about. Yes sure, it's about romance (and not that much all things considered) and it's pulpy (but not solely because of hot lady aliens), but it's also intricate worldbuilding that touches on a lot of sharp ideas, and a complicated tug-of-war between a genuine and vulnerable belief in reconciliation and community VS post 9-11 US military propaganda and steadfast belief in heroic exceptionalism, and the melancholic yet energizing mood, and the daring narrative systems, and so so much more than the 'We'll Bang OKs" and the "There's No Shepard Without Vakarian" and the whole ME3 ending situation
It's all there, but I'm sad the impact of the series is often reduced to (what I think is) the least interesting parts of its sum

Lestat and Daniel fight fight fight!
Live dog walker reaction:
Tumblr media
So my friend Jay @radiocurrency writes this fic where Vamp!Daniel and Lestat gets into a fight in a park near the Golden Gate bridge (Lestat is trying to help Daniel lure out Armand by making him jealous, but oops they try to outbitch each other instead and it ends in a fight where Daniel gets so angry he literally learns to fly just so he can punch Lestat.)
The story is so well written, and the characters are on point, yet I couldn’t help but imagine a poor dog walker pass the scene by and trying to pretend he didn’t just see the rockstar Lestat and Pulitzer Prize winning journalist Daniel Molloy (he’s cultured and reads The Times when not walking his dog) flying through the air, hissing and punching each other. Just another night in San Fransisco.
Full pic under the cut!

this is goofy and sappy but i’m so grateful to f1blr for re-igniting my love for writing. this got kind of long and rambly lol i’ll put the rest UTC
i’ve always loved writing, when i was as young as like 10 i would sit in my room and write pages and pages of YA romance type stories (think sarah dessen-esque), at one point i had a whole folder on my clunky old PC with like 20 original stories definitely hundreds of thousands of words, and they were BAD… but it was such a source of enjoyment for me. somewhere along the way i discovered fandom and fanfic and lost my passion for writing i think bc i was getting too in my head about it, comparing myself to other writers and feeling inadequate, also there was a lot of toxicity in some of the fandoms i was in when it came to attitudes toward fic in general, and since i was in mostly rpf fandoms i would get so anxious about writing someone too OOC that i would just… not write… because i felt like i had to do all this research first and know the Lore fully when all i wanted to do was write about 2 dudes fucking each other but my executive dysfunction makes researching things really difficult…
long story short i’m so happy to have found such a welcoming little community of writers here, i feel like the anxiety of writing has lessened because you all have been so kind and supportive of my writing. also posting short blurbs on tumblr is so normalized now (when i left tumblr in like 2018 it wasn’t as much at least in my corner of tumblr) so there’s so much less pressure for someone like me who struggles to finish things—i feel like i can still write and share without feeling like i have to write a polished piece for ao3. for the first time in like a decade i feel so excited about writing and it’s all im looking forward to doing when i get home from work, im jotting down thoughts on my daily patient lists like i used to do in my notebooks in middle/high school. it’s an incredible feeling to rediscover this creative side of myself.
f1blr writers i love you, f1blr readers i love you 🫶💗

😔 Still in mourning over Rayhan Mazin, a weather manipulating Arab meta introduced in the 2009 POWER GIRL comic, back in 2011, in the midst of the New 52 dropping; he gets all of 2 issues (#24-25, wherein he's racially profiled & wrongfully accused of using his weather powers for terrorism, when in fact, he was using them to save his plane from crashing) + hints of hero potential, but he's been MIA ever since. 😭

People ask why I'm a Christian.
Over the course of my life I have become increasingly convinced that our only hope is for each and every one of us to love our neighbor.
To survive and make the surviving worthwhile, we must treat each other as fully beloved children of God. Eternally unique and impossibly precious. Here and now.
If we would all just start doing this one thing tomorrow, everything else changes.

100% agree with you about the new hyrule theory in regards to totk. both adult and fallen timeline basically end with og hyrule getting destroyed so whatever handwavy time magic recombined the timelines makes perfect sense to me. i know hylia is a retroactive late addition to the lore but her being a time goddess solves basically ever linearity question ever 😭 why doesnt time break when link creates a paradox with the song of storms? goddess magic. next question.
REAL. confirming the sage of time theory was the smartest thing totk devs did because now whenever they fuck up the timeline they can just be like. time goddess powers fixed it. next question.

Mainstream spaces don't know how to light Black People OR why Black People tend to look less beautiful in media than they actually are in real-life...
So, I'm gonna highlight yet another issue in Hollyweird that hobbles Black people (especially women) at the ankles. The fact that this white woman figured this out herself comes down to caring enough about her work to figure out how to do this right *cough* Annie Leibovitz's ashy sad photos of Black woman *cough* Every brown-skinned celebrity I've been fortunate enough to see in person, 9 times out of 10 looks better in person because of this issue.

thinking about house-elves and, on a meta level, how they make the magic so much less... *magical.* in the first book, hogwarts seems like this fantastic magical place - then you learn that a bunch of that 'magic' was actually just invisible labor. maybe that's supposed to be the disillusionment of growing up, or something like that, but i think it's a missed worldbuilding opportunity - trading ambient magic for house-elves-as-deus-ex-machina, which leaves this... gap in power level between the magic harry et al learn at school and what we see on display from characters like voldemort and dumbledore (their fight in the ministry atrium, for example).
those two types of magic seem as though they're on completely different planes because there's nothing bridging them - we have Normal People Spells, which become less and less noteworthy as the series continues, and we have Powerful Magic, which voldemort only uses when expedient for the plot - he can't use that against harry, on a meta level, because harry doesn't have the skills to counter it, which means either mortifying defeat or unsatisfying plot-armor-y victory.
which in turn makes battle magic bland. for example, when it's 'crucio!' 'avada kedavra!' 'sectumsempra!' against 'protego!' 'stupefy!' 'expelliarmus!' - the magic has been reduced to step-by-step recipes, not something adaptable. and hogwarts, the ever-changing magical castle, becomes more and more and more set in stone. at first, the magical world seems like something infinitely deep - the magic is everywhere, and there's always something new to uncover. but once house-elves are introduced, the world becomes... explained. all that remains is this inaccessible territory that is only open to people like voldemort and dumbledore and unspeakables at the department of mysteries. that's where the magic is now, and it's out of reach. the toolbox doesn't have any more room to grow.
