Work in Progress: Public Art Project- The Update!

Yesterday, I finally got down to my public art project I started three years ago. I can't believe it's been that long. My friend Jamie has been bugging me about updating it and I even got some not-so-nice complaints about it looking unfinished. I am amazed that the sealant I put on it in 2017 actually kept the design pretty much intact.

Ben and I started early and just figured we would start and see how far we got- I didn't really want to paint over anything, so I left my BJR Orbs as they were, and created a border around each one. I didn't want to lose any of the splatter or the drips that I worked so hard on years ago. Plus, it's a part of my signature style and the layering of textures and paint really makes me happy and I think it adds character to the power box. It's a huge box and it took FOREVER the first time. Yesterday though, we got a lot done. We painted solid colors on the side to get rid of the white and primer. After sanding some parts, we added white and actually got to the black lines. Once the black lines on my rainbow taffy ribbon and portals are done, I will add the white highlights.

It was so hot yesterday and I totally got a sunburn. We got hungry and I got hangry, so we called it quits around four o'clock. I am so proud of us for getting so much done. I plan on going tomorrow and busting out the rest of the black so we can seal it this week.

I haven’t really made any art since I got home two weeks ago- so it was nice to be surrounded by supplies and emerged in creativity! I'll post final pics of the finished box when I am all done. I didn't edit this photos either- I wanted to make sure you guys saw the box as is. I like the minimal feel of my first design, but seeing those big color accents make me really happy. Super BJR art party fun box vibes.

Heads up: long post. This little piece I got from Anastasia Alexandrin @aalexandrin at the Dogwood Arts Festival yesterday has an amazing story behind it. Saturday night I had a dream. It was highly symbolic. I dreamt I was watching the rain out of a window, and it began to turn into a mixture of rain and snow as the temperature grew colder--until finally, it was snowing in large clumps. I went outside the door of my home to see snowdrifts and rooftops burdened with thick layers of snow. I saw a mockingbird fly by to my right and turned to see it. Then an owl swooped down to catch some prey and landed on a powerbox nearby, seemingly injured. A crow came to harass the owl (as they're mortal enemies) and I shooed the crow away. The owl swept across my path and landed closer to me on my right. I suddenly noticed I had a special glove on. I bent down gently to the ground and tapped my leather-covered arm, beckoning the owl to jump on. It did. I then proceeded to go inside gently and with great calm to give the injured owl food and salve for its feet. I then woke up. Flash forward: My husband and I are at the arts festival yesterday and what do I see in a booth I passed? Owls! I felt the need to purchase a print and ended up talking to the artist about getting into festivals, galleries, and how to start off as an artist. It was a deeply motivational and empowering conversation. As I left the festival, I felt an even larger drive and sense of determination in opening up my online art shop. In the meantime, this print will sit on my desk as a reminder of what I am: an artist. I will always be an artist, regardless of my day job. I will continue to strive to be an artist, regardless of my situation. And I will always carry that with me, no matter how stressful life gets. #spiritual #art #artist #mondaymotivation #spiritanimal

As part of my final project, through my unhostable, a perceived volatile and powerful box, which in fact renders no harm to the plant, animal or human life, I want to reveal, or explore the relations between ethics, power and space, inspired by Derrida’s week 7 reading. Particularly those three words stood out to me, simply because of how I feel towards my unhostable. I feel powerless compared to it, I feel as if its permanent presence in my no place ruins the ambience of this setting, it strips it of natural innocence, as the box to me symbolises human intervention.

This unhostable I have chosen, is simply hit or miss, I run the risk of completely missing the brief of this assignment, however, I did not feel drawn to any other object in my place, and something about the harmless presence of the box made me ponder the thought of whether or not it is in fact harmless.

That brings me to my new and hopefully improved proposal for this assignment. Upon realising the cold and hard truth, that this powerbox has no reason to be removed, it is, in fact, a permanent resident of my no place. My installation will revolve around this fact, and enhance the idea of coexistence between the man-made and natural worlds. Instead of fighting against my unhostable, in which I have no viable reason to fight against other than something as insignificant as how I feel towards it, I hope to promote and explore a relationship between humans and my unhostable, challenging people to do something one would think is absurd, to nurture this powerbox as if it was as gentle and innocent as a plant, or as any other part of the natural world. Simply, my assignment will consist of a cleaning station in which participants rub, polish, clean and dust the powerbox as an effort to build a positive relationship between the most inanimate and unusual unhostable and the people involved. I hope to renegotiate the issue of crossing the boundaries between inanimate and living beings.

The second part of the installation will be a planting workshop, where participants will plant seeds for low maintenance flowers around the perimeter of the powerbox. They will be watered and as I’m aware that perhaps maintaining these seeds is somewhat unrealistic, this part of the assignment is more about the act rather than the result.

This is all in effort to integrate both worlds of natural and man-made together, helping them collide with the understanding that both inanimate and alive beings have a place in the vast environment of our planet, I hope to promote a slight feeling of peacefulness within a community, and challenge the way I felt towards my unhostable, completely converting those feelings of annoyance and powerlessness to ones in hope of coexistence between two important sectors of our environment and our arts, the living and the non-living.
