Macaroni and Cheese Bread Bowl

So! While I was sick and not really cooking, I ended up talking to my mother about having a nice, baked mac n cheese, like we used to make when I was a kid. We both missed it (it had been based on her mother’s recipe that she enjoyed as a child and had wanted to pass on to me) and decided “Well, why not mac some cheese?”

During the time we were planning our special macked cheese, she ended up finding this cool round bread in our Walmart’s bakery and as soon as I saw it I had the most brilliant idea.

“What if we make that baked mac n cheese, and serve it in a bread bowl?”

She loved the idea, and the plan was finalized.

Ingredients: -1 box wheat elbow macaroni (this was an accident, but we rolled with it since she’s diabetic and I was sick, we figured using the healthier noodles might be a good idea) -1 block colby cheese -A generous amount of lactose-free milk (I am, rather ironically, lactose intolerant) -Salt and Pepper to taste -(Optional) Grated Parmesan and Romano (can be mixed in, used on top to aid the crust, or both!)

Instructions: -Preheat oven at 350F -Boil the pasta, drain the water -Stir in the ingredience -Cook a bit, but don’t fully finish it on the stovetop -At some point, hollow out your round bread loaf (probably best done while the noodles are boiling) -Pour your cheesed mac into the hollow bread -On a preferably cast iron pan, bake until a nice golden brown crust has formed -Enjoy!

Opinions? Overall, it was pretty decent. I thought we could have used a few more cheeses, maybe some mozzarella and/or feta. She liked it alright the way it was, but couldn’t eat too much because her blood sugar. It actually took a few weeks to finish it off, during which time I saw the movie “Killer Klowns From Outer Space” for the first time. Weird movie, but better than I expected. We’ll probably be making this again in the future, with an updated recipe. I’ll post an update if/when that happens!

experiment report: bagged cheese base

a few weeks back i mentioned offhand to my family that i missed the nacho cheese we used to get when i was a kid (the brand we got changed their recipe and starting charging more for less)

they brought home bagged cheese sauce. 2 pounds of cheese in a plastic bag. i decided to try using it to make mac n cheese.

i got my noodles boiled and strained, poured some cheese in my pan and got to work. the flavor? bland with a weird subtaste. needed lots of salt. still no good. i ended up adding some parmesan and romano. it ended up edible, but i couldn’t bring myself to finish it. i fed the rest to my mother. (she said it was good, but a bit salty)

would i make it again? possibly, if i really wanted mac n cheese with minimum effort. and was also in the mood for united states public school food.

if i had to rate it, maybe 3.5/10

James: So James would absolutely ADORE tomato pasta with chorizo through it, especially his Mothers. It's the only thing he will eat with tomatoes in it, he hates anything else, for example, tomato soup, tomato ketchup etc etc..

Sirius: Growing up rich Sirius' family would give him nothing but the best to eat (when they actually did feed him at least) so anytime they were having pasta for dinner it wouldn't be something like penne pasta or spaghetti, it would be squid ink pasta. Obviously, it's quite ironic cause squid ink pasta is black and it's the black family. Regulus HATED it, like really hated it, whenever they had it for dinner he would sneak his share of it onto Sirius' plate, Sirius doesn't like to admit that he loves it, like he can't eat any other type of pasta cause his taste is already used to squid ink.

Peter: Peter LOVES food, but he is a very picky eater, meaning the only Pasta he'll eat is plain, it can't be overcooked and it can't be overcooked or else he'll get the ick and just not eat it. he doesn't have it with sauce, or seasoning. Just. Plain. Pasta.

Remus: Remus doesn't eat pasta anymore but his all-time favorite is the pasta his Mother used to make for him. It always took him back to before he was bit and when he'd be sitting at the kitchen table watching his mother walk around the kitchen like she had been for what felt like a million times trying to make sure everything was cooked properly. After Remus got bit his Mother started to drift away but she still made the pasta just the way Remus loved. When she died, Remus stopped eating pasta cause the memories of his Mother hurt too much.
