Potato Towers! #potatoes #potato #potatoplant #shirelandfarm #homestead
This year, I'm trying out potato towers. I used a couple of pieces of cattle fencing and filled it with hay and grass from the field.

An update on my experimental mini potato towers: 🥔 https://mindyourdirt.com/2019/06/14/the-poor-mans-potato-tower/ 🥔 Well, the towers seemed to actually reduce the size and output of the crop! Nothing grew in the towers themselves and it appears that it wasted the energy pushing more stem. The one plant I left alone in the ground made the larger potatoes seen here. As my pumpkins are now requiring more room, I harvested early to give them just that. So small potatoes are on the menu. Still not bad all things considered. Next time I'm solely planting directly in the ground. 🥔 🥔 🥔 🥔 #MindYourDirt #organicgardening #cityboyfarmer #urbanfarmer #homestead #homesteading #potato #potatotower #diy (at San Diego, California) https://www.instagram.com/p/B0UjXLagng0/?igshid=1w1t6otigy3ee

This was our first experience with the @airpotusa potato towers. Unfortunately the actual potatoes were destroyed during the hurricane but we still managed to get something from the sweet potatoes. Harvesting surely is most of the fun with these pots. #growninhaiti #airpotusa #potatotower #sweetpotatoes #harvest #organic #nogmos #nopesticides #noherbicides #haiti #ayiti #kids #community

Minkymoomoo is not feeling herself today - she has a temp but she’s also cold - the poor darling - she’s having a snooze - but I don’t think she wanted her Pokémon socks on!! 😂😂😂 so today we are chilling - wrapped in blankets - I m planning my planting for this year - so damn excited - to grow potato’s in a tower AND in pots lined with carrier bags - so I can lift out the potato plant - grab a few potato’s for dinner and then pop the plant back in the pot without damaging the roots !! Plus you get to use those crappy plastic shopping bags for something useful - @jax_lifestyle_xx it’s getting exciting!! Also looking at growing #microgreens too - these plants are so damn good for you and everyone can grow them.. #poorlygirl #babygirl #toddlerlife #blankets #plans #gardenplans #growingplans #microgreens #potatotower #growyourownfood #growyourown #healthyfood #healthylifestyle

Potatoes - #mustknowmonday - Did you know that growing #potatoes in #containers can make #gardening accessible for the small space #gardener? These #plants can be grown in a deep pot, #potatotower, garbage can, storage bin or even a burlap bag. When you grow a #potato #plant in a #container, harvesting is much easier too. Just remember that whatever type of container you choose, make sure there is room to build up the soil as the #spuds grow. 🥔

Potato Tower Tumble
We've had a lot of fun with our potato towers and hope we've inspired friends to try their own. The next step is to tumble those towers and reap the bounty.  We want you there with us.
Join us at the Tabor Living Lab, 5441 SE Belmont, Sunday August 3rd. 12:00-3:00 for an afternoon of kids activities, wildcrafted medicinal tea tastings, produce munchings, and of course, potatoes!
Tumblr media
What's a Potato Tower? Potato towers allow folks to grow food above ground, eliminating the need for digging, and reducing the chance of leaving small potatoes behind. Left behind potatoes often cause diseases for future crops.
Gift Shop: There are a few things we still need in order to make the Tabor Living Lab a functioning educational space. This event will also have a gift shop with crafts, starts, and produce for sale if you wish to support our cause.

I have a big garden - but I don’t want to be digging it all up! So I ve decided to grow potato’s in bags and try out making a tower - which I m rather excited about !! @jax_lifestyle_xx !! The potato’s seem to grow better in a straw and peat potato tower - as they like the acidic soil and the air flow. Rather than a wooden box.. but it’s all trial and error. I m also going to be using bags for life - we have a million of the bloody things!! Also going to be starting my sweet potato shoots off this week - it ll take about 6 weeks to get little plants going - but well worth it only having to use 1 sweet potato as the mother!! I can’t wait to get this gardening party started!!! Sprouting seeds soon too!! Eeekkk!! Oh and bought my red onion bulbs too!! I tried from seed last year and the red ones came to nothing and only 1 white one grew. #howdoesyourgardengrow #onions #potatotower #straw #peat #growmorelesswaste #bagsforlife #lesswaste

Many hands, light work
Yesterday was a great example of how many hands make light work!
The Permaculture Research Institute of Saskatchewan held its second Permablitz of 2014. There were about 20 volunteers and as you can see from the before and after photos, a lot can be accomplished in 6 hours!
“What is permaculture?” you ask? Well, permaculture is a design system that combines food production, water conservation, soil health and other design techniques with the goal of enriching human well-being and ecological health. In essence, permaculture design is intended to sustainably meet the needs of both humans and nature. It is also guided by three main ethics: earth care, people care, and share the surplus.
And so, a “permablitz” is simply another word for a permaculture work bee. Not only is it a fun way to spend time outdoors, but in just a few hours, you help transform a yard into an ecosystem that provides both food and beauty. You also gain practical knowledge and skills that can be transferred to your own home and garden. Nice thing is, permablitzes are free to attend and no specific skill sets are required. Everyone is put to work and encouraged to get their hands dirty! And if you want a permablitz in your yard, you just need need to help out at three other permablitzes - easy as that!
I was really fortunate to be part of a great design team with Michelle and Mark. We met with the homeowners (Jon and Heather) last fall, measured their yard, and asked them a series of questions to get a good understanding of what they envisioned for their front yard. Over the winter, we came up with a design that we then refined with Jon and Heather’s input. Once we were all happy with it, Jon and Heather obtained all the materials we would need, while Michelle, Mark and I recruited volunteers and found people who we could borrow some of the necessary supplies and tools from.
We accomplished a lot at Jon and Heather's permablitz. Our fabulous group of volunteers:
Dug an extensive swale system to manage and conserve water onsite (and, at the same time, guide it away from the house).
Rebuilt a herb spiral, which will provide an efficient use of growing space, optimize water use, and beautifully display many edible plants.
Prepared new and existing garden beds by adding compost, manure, and compost extract.
Provided good energy and positivity that was enjoyed by all!
We also had the pleasure of touring a group of enthusiastic Wild about Saskatoon attendees around the site at the end of the day.
Below is a sketch of the design, including a few before, during and after photos:

I also had the opportunity to be on a design team with Joanne and Michelle for another permablitz that took place on May 4. In one day, our group of permablitz volunteers built a potato tower, strawberry tower, a number of wicking containers, and a three-barrel rainwater storage system. We also made a batch of compost extract and prepared their small garden bed for the season.
The results of Val and Kaitlyn’s permablitz were just as inspiring!
