Aromantic Headcanons

Here’s a handful of characters that I eventually want to write fanfics exploring my aromantic headcanons for.

Ezekiel Jones - The Librarians Ezekiel is easily my favorite character on the show, which considering there’s also Cassandra who is canonically wlw that just goes to show what an impressive scene-stealing thief Ezekiel is. All his best moments on the show are platonic - connecting with Cassandra over feeling untrustworthy, showing the lengths Ezekiel will go through in the time loop episode to keep his friends alive, the episode with the alternate time lines where everyone was in love with Eve except for Ezekiel who’d cared for her as the mother figure he’d desperately needed as a teenager... Basically, Ezekiel is aromantic and I . The closest the show ever gets to a love story for him is a rather uncomfortable episode where a love potion (which they acknowledge is more of an obsession potion) affects everyone but Ezekiel. Textually they say it’s because Ezekiel already cares about the person who made the potion, but all Ezekiel has to say on the matter is that he felt compassion for her when she was humiliated on a reality tv show. (Which, compassion can be seen as a rather powerful type of love, so in that light the episode isn’t as bad as it otherwise could’ve been.)

Phryne Fisher - Miss Fisher’s Murder Mysteries Phryne Fisher is a Lady Detective in Australia who’d been a nurse during WW1. The show itself is fiercely feminist and incredibly well written and I’m extremely excited that it’s getting a follow up movie next year. Phryne herself is something of a thrill seeker, a big believer in justice and that the law isn’t always right, and beds whomever she pleases without needing a romantic entanglement to go with it. Which, her being sexually active is never once treated as shameful. Phryne does eventually wind up in a romantic relationship - third season - but that’s only after she and Jack developed a friendship and working relationship built on trust and mutual respect first. (Jack clearly develops feelings for Phryne before she does for him and he never expects, or assumes, that she’s obligated to return his feelings.) Because Jack’s basically the only character Phryne shows romantic interest in - platonic, sexual, and alterous attractions abound, but Jack’s the only real romantic interest she has during the show - I headcanon Phryne as being demi-romantic or grayromantic.

Eliot Spencer - Leverage I headcanon Eliot as being aromantic allosexual. He has a lot of sexual conquests mentioned throughout the show, is a charming flirt, and certainly knows how to be romantic when the occasion calls for it - or when Hardison and Nate are being inept and need help - but he never seems particularly interested in being in a romantic relationship himself. He did nearly get married once, but he was apparently more invested in being a good soldier than a good fiance and that ended his relationship with her. Ultimately his most important relationships in the show are with his teammates. He’d sacrifice anything, and everything, for their well being and I tend to headcanon that while Parker/Hardison are together romantically (which is canon) they’re also Parker/Eliot/Hardison QPR wise. He’s definitely not involved with them romantically, and probably not sexually either, but there’s an intimacy and mutual emotional support going on between the three of them that even with Sophie and Nate retired together its easy to imagine Parker, Eliot, and Hardison living out the rest of their lives together well beyond the end of the show. (I mean, the three of them even run a pub/micro-brewery together.)

Velvet Crowe - Tales of Berseria I view Velvet as being an aro lesbian. In the prologue, her three strongest relationships are with her little brother, her father-figure brother-in-law, and her best friend (another girl) whom she wants to always live near. She teases her little brother about having a crush but can’t conceptualize the idea of having a love interest for herself. She’s just so relatably aro in the prologue. The rest of the game she shows zero romantic interest in anyone, though she sort of becomes a parental replacement to an abused child she sort of... kidnaps early on in the game. She winds up in a sort of co-parenting situation over the kid with another female character and honestly the lesbian subtext writes itself as easily as the aromantic subtext.

Sora - Kingdom Hearts I know canonically it’s Sora/Kairi. But we see so little of her and her personality can change entirely based on the game. (KH1 and KH2 were at least recognizably the same character but KH3 Kairi’s personality seemed to have disappeared entirely. She was The MacGuffin and Designated Damsel in Distress and that was about it.) So it’s a lot easier for me to understand where Sora/Riku shippers are coming from than it is for me to figureout how Sora/Kairi works. But, honestly? Sora’s motivations are all about his platonic feelings. The love he feels for his friends that connects their hearts together. So my headcanon for Sora is that he’s aromantic and misunderstanding what his feelings for Kairi are. Ideally I’d like to write a story about the three of them - Sora/Kairi/Riku - being in a QPR together and being badass Keyblade Masters. But I’m a little burnt out on their arc after the mess that was KH3. So I’m more likely to write more about my aromantic Ienzo headcanon (minor Kingdom Hearts character) than delve into what’s happening with those three.

Colette Brunel - Tales of Symphonia I’ve already written one story exploring my aroace headcanon for Colette, but I want to go back and expand on that further. Maybe a story about Colette discussing her aromanticism with her grandmother, whom I headcanon as demi-romantic, or maybe Colette mending fences with Sheena, whom she had a falling out with in the previous story. While Colette is the canon love interest for Lloyd - the main character of the game - the two of them have what feels like more of a sibling relationship and the game has a bit of a ‘choose your own adventure’ thing going on that allows scenes to change based on who Lloyd’s got the highest ‘relationship values’ with. (I like pairing him with Zelos, so...) So the canon relationship doesn’t really mean a whole lot when you’re playing and any romance seen in the game is lowkey enough that most of it can be interpreted platonically. Of course, i can always veer away from canon entirely and finally write that Jurassic Park fusion that’s been lingering in the back of my head where Colette and Lloyd are paleontologists and QPPs, Zelos is a weird chaostition, and the velociraptors are probably actually utahraptors.

Aziraphale and Crowley - Good Omens While I enjoy reading romantic pairings about these two, I personally see them as having an ongoing QPR. Life post-apocalypse being more of them respecting each other’s boundaries, living apart because they need the space but spending their days together because they make each other happy, and just generally making all their important decisions together. And maybe co-parenting Warlock some more because that’s the kid they’ve actually been god-parenting for all those years. (I like the idea of Warlock and Adam deciding they’re brothers now too.)

What color was the last swimsuit you wore? I only have a black one. Is your dream job attainable? I mean define “dream job.” I’d ideally be a meerkat biologist if I was willing to live in Africa and could handle even mild heat, but I can’t/won’t do either of those, so it’s not obtainable to me. I’d also love to be a paleontologist if I could travel and handle heat once more, but again, I can’t. My only *attainable* dream job is being a photographer, which I am aiming for. I’d LIKE to focus on nature/wildlife photography, but that’s unlikely to be able to support me, so. Do you have to go to school or work tomorrow? N/A Have you slept for longer than usual today? Yes, but only because of my nightmares. I tend to take at least two (though sometimes one) hour-long naps during the day because if I wake up once during the night, as I usually do, I’m fucked because I’m very likely to have an intense nightmare. It seems like the medicine I’m on wears off with consciousness, I guess. I only allow myself to sleep an hour at daytime because my mother has noticed if I have a nightmare, it’s usually no earlier than one hour into sleep. Even then I still have them occasionally. Have you ever taken classes for a musical instrument? Recorder in elementary school was necessary for whatever stupid reason, and then I played the flute for years. Out of school, I took guitar lessons for a while. I got semi-decent (at best I could do the intro to “Crazy Train” at normal speed, I think), but it didn’t last because it was annoying/time-consuming to build up the calluses that make playing painless, I was really bad at overthinking where my fingers were, and I just wasn’t invested quite enough. I’ll tell you, it gave me mad respect for guitarists, that shit isn’t easy by any means. Have you ever been on vacation with someone other than your family? Yes, though it was brief. I was a kid (okay, pre-teen, w/e) still in my separation anxiety from Mom phase and it was literally because of me we had to go home. I still feel shitty about it, though no one seemed upset at me. How old do you think you’ll be when you move out on your own? Who the fuck even knows anymore. Do you have a job? If so, where do you work? If not, do you want one? No; N/A; yes ultimately but no at the current moment because I have to keep watch over Mom. If you wear make-up, which brand of foundation/powder do you use? Oh, a hand-written poem would wreck me, yeesh. Or a drawing. But any would be very sweet. Do you remember why you made the last mistake you did? I don’t know the most recent mistake, but probably because I’m just in general a terrified person who second-guesses or overanalyzes everything. Did you check how many calories the last thing you ate had? Yes. I’m back on my calorie-counting obsession again. Are your nails long or short? Short, always. I can’t keep them long. I normally delete this question because the answer should be so obvious, but I feel like just pointing it out that no one fucking knows who they’re gonna kiss next. It’s a dangerous mindset. Do you actually think there will be a zombie apocolypse? Personally, no. I do think it’s scientifically possible, we already see this in insects, but I just don’t imagine it happening to humans before we’re our own downfall. No, that shit is terrifying. Are you really ticklish? YES don’t fucking touch me. How do you decide what you're going to eat each day? I just follow what I’m craving that day. How are you similar to your siblings? Different? Compared to Ashley and Nicole at least, I can’t think of any real similarities off the top of my head. They’re intelligent, motivated, outgoing, successful, yada yada, then there’s me. What's your favorite type of non-fiction literature? Autobiographies by people I’m actually interested in. Do you believe in souls? Soulmates? Souls, absolutely. Soulmates, no. It’s fairytale ideation to think your soul has a perfect match with another, hate to break it to ya. Favorite soundtrack? BITCH don’t make me choose between Shadow of the Colossus and Silent Hill 2. Fucking masterpieces. Pianos or guitars? *shrugs* Depends on the music and my mood. Did an animal ever bite you? Does taking pictures of roadkill count???? lmao probably Do you think it would be a good idea to post photos of negative moments as well as positive? Well… I guess it depends. Like ngl, the pictures some people share of them having panic attacks to just show how fucking real they are definitely touch you, as do those depicting poverty, etc., BUT I really do think there are limits and also differences in motivations. I very genuinely think some of the RP stories I’ve taken part in are novel-worthy, yes. I wanted to make them books when I was younger, but now I no longer do mainly because there are areas that are just way too fucking dark that I don’t wanna put out there but play massive parts in the stories, so like… Do you regularly watch the news? I have dandruff AND a dry scalp. It’s a wonderful mix. Have you ever gone through a phase of crushing on EVERYONE? Definitely not. Do you have any clothes with spikes/studs on them? I have a spiked choker, and I might still have gloves with studs? Can you remember what you last clapped for? My mom’s birthday! :’) Have you ever given a pet to someone else? Yes, with cats; we had to do that quite often when I was a kid because we had so many cats, none which we could afford to fix. Then we’ve done it with two dogs we just couldn’t handle. Oh yeah, I gave my iguana away too because he was too high maintenance for me, but also because he DESPERATELY needed a much bigger terrarium, which we couldn’t afford. I absolutely could not watch him in that tiny tank. I miss him a LOT, but he went to a wonderful home! The lady who adopted him sent me pictures upon pictures months after taking him in. Do you know anyone named Walter? No. What's your least favorite ice-cream flavor? Strawberry is fucking disgusting. And that’s coming from someone whose favorite fruit is strawberries. What's your least favorite song by your favorite artist? I’m not sure. There’s a handful that just don’t grab my attention that I don’t even remember them. What was the last good news you heard? I can FINALLY talk to my psychiatrist tomorrow. Who’s your favorite singer of all time? Probably Freddie Mercury. What airline do you fly most? Idk, I don’t really pay attention. I haven’t flown very often though anyway. Do you have a dog that is destructive? I don’t have a dog. What’s one TV series you’ve seen every episode of? Meerkat Manor is the most obvious, ha ha. Maaaaany times. Assuming you have Facebook, who last left you a wallpost? Probably my friend Sammi. Assuming you have hair, how are you wearing it today? It’s too short for me to “wear” it any particular way. It’s just… there lmao. Assuming you're not homeless, what kind of living arrangements do you have? I live with my mom in a house she’s renting. Have you or have you ever considered messing around with the same sex? I’m bisexual so you can guess I’m not opposed to it. Are you particular about any brands of food you will or will not eat? Are there any restaurants you refuse to go to? Brands, no. I don’t eat Chick-fil-a because they’re run by fucking homophobic bigots that monetarily support conversion therapy and other anti-LGBT projects. I’m not giving you any fucking money. What was the most current dream you can remember about? Do you generally dream every night, or hardly at all? It was actually last night, when I dreamed about accidentally running into Jason where I last knew he worked, and he was really hostile. If I don’t take my medicine, I always have nightmares when I sleep.

#049 Changing Your Codename

While your codename is undoubtedly an intrinsic part of your image, changing it is actually not all that hard to do. If you’re not trying to completely reinvent yourself by faking your death, moving, getting a new costume and starting over as a brand new person, changing your name is as simple as just letting people know that you’re the same hero, just with a new name. Call a press conference, disseminate a press release, post it on twitter, take out an ad in a newspaper that’s just a silhouette with the words “Who is the new mysterious Hydrosassin??” and then on the next page there’s a nigh identical ad except the silhouette is replaced by a full color picture of you with the words “Oh it’s just this guy!” Basically, changing your codename is easy peasy lemon squeezey. But why would a superhero ever want to change their highly recognizable codename? Well, there a dozens of reasons! And we’ve compiled a bunch of them just special for you!

Reasons You Might Want (or need) to Change Your Codename:

It’s been a while since anybody’s written a news article about you.

Another superhero started using your codename and everybody likes them better so they get to keep it!

Your new costume has different colors so you need to change the color in your codename to properly reflect this change.

The evolution of language has resulted in your codename now having unfortunate implications (This is why that detective who bursts into flames doesn’t go by “Flaming Dick” anymore).

You’ve received a cease and desist from a major corporation.

You discovered that you’re actually allergic to the animal you’ve named yourself after.

Somebody else owns the website domain name associated with your codename and it’s not a website you want people thinking you’re affiliated with.

You were recently cured of your colorblindness and realized that your costume was a different color than you thought it was.

It sounds inappropriate when said in certain accents.

The version of you that appears in sitcoms and cartoons is an absolute buffoon and you want to distance yourself from that.

You are addicted to holding press conferences.

You realized your codename implied that you had powers that you don’t actually have.

Your codename was way too long, especially for people to call out when they were in immediate danger so people would invariably call some other hero.

It tested poorly with focus groups for reasons they “couldn’t quite put their finger on.”

You lost the trademark.

It didn’t fit on your vanity license plate (and you can’t just take the vowels and spaces out of “Mister Boater”).

It was hard for songwriters to find rhymes for when they wrote songs about your bravery and heroism.

Your name was used as the title of a movie that wasn’t about you at all (not even a little bit!) but people still kept asking you about it.

You weren’t doing anything else today so why not.

It was too easy for songwriters and comedians to find rhymes for your name and they kept making mean rhyming songs and jokes.

A new AI helper was developed and it has the same name as you and now every time somebody calls your name dozens of devices come to life and say “How can I help you today?” and it is annoying.

You accidentally got your codename tattooed on your arm during a drunken night out and now, in order to prevent people from realizing who you are, you need to either change your codename or get the tattoo removed and removing tattoos is painful and expensive!

A terrorist organization started calling themselves by your name.

You lost a bet.

Some other guy bested you in combat and stole your name!

The actor who you were hoping would play you in the movie adaption of your life would only sign on if they got to choose a new, cooler, codename for you.

The toy company that you’ve licensed your image to for action figure purposes is forcing you to incorporate accessories and special features from your toys into your name. (That’s how Kung Fu Grip Star Breacher with Spring-Loaded-Missile-Launching Action! got his name, exclamation mark and all.)

You suffered severe head trauma and actually forgot what your old codename was and then when someone reminded you what it was, you thought it sounded stupid (and weren’t wrong!)

The animal you named yourself after went extinct.

You survived a traumatic incident and changed your name to show that the event had changed you.

You accidentally infiltrated an alien government and you had to change your codename to reflect your new rank as High Chancellor of the Blorp Emirates.

Science discovered a new species that you thought was super cool so you renamed yourself after it.

You lost one of your numerous extra appendages and you didn’t want to sound like a liar by still calling yourself Twelve-Armed Lady.

That username was already taken on Twitter and you weren’t about to call yourself Supah Warriah-2.

You suffered another freak lab accident and your mutant form changed dramatically so you decided to come up with a new name for it.

Your old one was too long to neatly write on “hello my name is” tags at superhero single mixers which are almost definitely a thing.

The first three letters of your codename were a bad word so every time you’d get a high score in a video game you’d be setting a bad example for the kids.

John Travolta mispronounced your name at an award show and you were too embarrassed to correct him so that’s your name now.

The ghosts of your ancestors came to you in a dream and told you that you were bringing great shame upon your family by going around with a doofy name like “Super Sprinkler,” or “Professor Paleontologist.”

Your name was too easy to spell and therefore easily googled and therefore everybody kept seeing that embarrassing video of you trying to arrest a fire hydrant you were 98% sure was an evil shapeshifter in disguise. (And it was an evil shapeshifter, it just didn’t reveal itself until after the cameras stopped filming!)

Every time somebody spoke your name out loud dogs vomited and you didn’t really know why that was but figured you were better off just changing your name.

You named yourself after the magical word that either powers you up or depowers you depending on what state you’re in so every time you introduced yourself to someone while in superhero mode you were instantly transformed back into a ten-year-old boy.

You’d just woken up from a coma and didn’t realize the name “Oprah” was already taken.

The person who was using the codename you really wanted died so now it’s just up for grabs!!!

You discovered a long lost super powered sibling and you were so overcome with a desire to be close with them that you guys went out and got new matching codenames.

Someone pointed out that your name spelled backwards read “All hail Satan Satan is great and he’s my best friend whom I love with all my heart” something which, somehow, you had never noticed before.

You got a fortune cookie that read “Hey! You should totally change your name! Erm, I mean. A great change will help you go far. Yeah, you get it. Lucky numbers: 8, 1004, -2, π.”

The “Director of Brand Reinvigoration Nation” that you hired off of Craigslist suggested a lot of stuff and “change your name and nothing else” was the easiest. (Other things included “star in a music video about soap,” and “create a third identity that is a villain.”)

A sick child used their wish to get you to change your name to something of their choosing.

You graduated from sidekick-hood and took on a new superhero moniker of your own.

You’re being blackmailed by a podium company into having numerous press conferences using their product as a form of free advertising.

You recently acquired a boat and needed to amend your name to add “captain.”

You recently completed your PhD and needed to amend your name to add “doctor.”

You came up with the name Brain Star before you started coming up with costume ideas and you understood that you couldn’t go around wearing a big “BS” on your chest.

The seasons change every four months! I change my name once in a ten year career and all of a sudden I have to explain myself???

Somebody bought you a gift card to a newspaper’s advertising department (a terrible gift by the way) and you don’t really know what else to do with it.

Your old name in sign language was a lewd gesture.

The name you originally wanted to use was deemed “way too cool for you” by your mentor but you just saved the world from alien werewolves from Jupiter’s moon so you felt that you’ve earned it now.

You didn’t like the way your picture turned out on your superhero team’s ID card and you figured if they were printing a new card for you anyway you may as well also change your name.

Someone triple dared you to change it.

An trans-dimensional imp placed a curse on you that made you speak entirely in song and at first you thought it was annoying but now you’re totally into it and so you’re really leaning into it and adding “:The Musical!” to the end of your name.

Thanks to the word of the day toilet paper your friend bought you (also a terrible gift) you’ve learned a bunch of cool new words that you want to incorporate into your codename.

You decided to take up a fallen hero’s legacy by taking on their name.

You’re a reformed supervillain who wanted to take on a new more heroic sounding name. (Killslaughter the Death Bringer is really more of a villain name.)

Somebody took you aside and gently explained to you why your codename was actually offensive to a group of people.

You met a version of yourself from an alternate reality and they had a way cooler name so you just adopted that.

You found a drawing you’d made as a child of yourself as a superhero complete with a codename you’d come up with and even though “Sir Gumball Man VII” is a stupid name you felt you owed it to your younger self to follow through on your dreams.

You misunderstood the public’s call for more transparency in superhero operations and changed your name to “Transparent Man/Woman/Person.”

People keep asking you if you were bitten by a radioactive version of the animal you’re named after. And you weren’t. The name comes from something else. You also can’t “do anything that [insert animal] can.” That Petey Parkour guy really ruined animal-themed names for everybody.

You wanted to change it to reflect the tips we featured in our post about codenames.

Binge Watching FRIENDS...

Just finished binge watching friends and as much nostalgia it brought me I couldn’t help but have this nagging thought about how different it wouldn't be in todays group of early 20s group of kids in NYC. So I made a list:

2. JOEY Tribbiani would be something like Martin Santiago since there was basically no representation of the racial diversity of NYC in the original FRIENDS I think there should be in a modern day one.

3. PHOEBE wouldn’t change much other than actually making her commit to the stereotype vegan, anti-government, anti-corporation, hippie because that’s still funny and quite a few people pin millennials as that.

4. Rachel should go into a male dominated field of occupation. In FRIENDS, Rachel gets independence from her parents’ money by getting the odd job here and there until she makes it into the Fashion industry which is something she loved and knew how to do. While this may be true in some circumstances its also quite sexist. We see this with the other main cast females as well. Monica is a chef where that is a male dominated industry, cooking and things related to it is always referred to Monica as “hosting” or “being a good hostess” which is a 1950s ways of looking at it in my pov. Phoebe is a masseuse which is considered a female occupation and isn’t taken seriously. You actually have to get a college degree for that ya know. So yeah Rachel should strive to become a businesswoman or a lawyer or something in computer sciences. Besides nerdy girls can be hot as fuck.

5. As much as I love Chandler Bing the way he is (mostly because I see so much of myself in this sarcastic anxiety prone goof) they really should have written him as gay or bisexual. I understand at that time it was okay to laugh about the thought of someone being homosexual without actually being it but if FRIENDS were potraying a bunch of todays 20 years olds then Chandler should be bisexual. Not only because bisexuality doesn’t get enough exposure but because it can still be used as comedy just more of a “mocking the bi-phobes” then a laughing at the gays. (Ross: So you’re dating a girl now? You’re not gay? Chandler: Nope, still Bisexual. That’s kinda what it means.)

6. I’m thinking Monica would be a biracial kid and her and Ross are step siblings that never really knew the difference between them until they were older. It would also make sense with why she is obsessed with being a good hostess. The white kids don’t fully accept her cause she’s not white the black kids aren’t fully accepting because she doesn’t talk or behave like them. Which feeds into her “please like me” hostess obsession.

7. Ross would still be a white young insecure asshole because unfortunately we still have those today but in this one the ending definitely won’t be in his happily ever after that he didn’t freaking deserve but Rachel’s. You know what, she should have left. 8. Most of their jobs would be cyber related somehow like Chandler uses Tumblr and posts sarcastic comments at celebrities who sometimes surprisingly message him back. If the newer Joey character stayed an actor then he'd take a lot of photos and be on social media a lot for his “followers” using his friends life events to help his feed. Phoebe wouldn’t like technology until Ross somehow gets her addicted to Candy Crush or WOW. They all Skype or FT at work instead of meeting at that Cafe so that would nix the Gunther character.

9. To live in NYC it would make a lot more sense if all of them lived together in that one huge 2 bedroom apartment than for any of them to live independently on their own without struggling. Ross is a Paleontologist who worked at a museum/college and was also a divorcee who most likely had to pay child support. He could not have afford that nice of an apartment that was outfitted for him on the show. That’s laughable. The same with Phoebe. She had her own apartment of which she shared sometimes with others, yes but most times she lived their on her own with a masseuse’s salary. No wonder she complained about money a lot. In a 2018 FRIENDS she should ask for more free food or at least give comedic shots of her finding ways to get money like modeling for a nude portrait on a college campus or recording weird sounds for studios.
