saphs song prompt challenge

ring in the new year with me and a silly challenge. any fandom, any genre. only rule is that you must use the song to inspire the fic. multi chap, one shot all are welcome. do as many or as little as you want, on time or not! doesnt matter to me. most fall into the angst/hurt comfort genre because that's what i write best but i threw in some other more happy ones

The tears of Mummers House: An experiment with time (Or, Why I usually don't post WIPs)

Right now, I am posting a fic called The tears of Mummers House. It’s only 3500 words total, but it’s divided into 21 chapters. I started posting it on September 24, and I’ll post one chapter a day for 20 days; there will be two chapters on the last day, October 13. 

Why on earth, you might ask, would I do this? 

Why I usually don’t post WIPs

So, I have posted at least two multi-chap WIPs before, in fandoms other than Carry On. The reception to those stories was lovely and warm, but I felt such intense guilt and anxiety over leaving readers hanging while I was struggling to draft chapters. I did eventually finish both - in the case of one story, literally five years after I’d posted the first chapter. YIKES.

Fun writing lesson for me: It is very difficult to create when you are weighed down by guilt, anxiety, and reader expectations.

So, I switched to my current method instead. I tend to draft and edit a complete piece, and then I post it all in one go. I like it a lot better this way, for a lot of reasons: 

01 My stories are often meant to be read like a film, not a TV show.

When I write a story, I usually intend it to be read in one go, like a film, with a complete beginning, middle, and end. I like the emotional satisfaction of reading a complete story. 

(But I’m also a hypocrite who will torture myself by re-reading old WIPs that I know will never get finished. Incidentally, if you ever watched Witch Hunter Robin, you should read The Disappearing Life by tripping fruit if you want to be tortured too). 

There are some writers who are very good at writing satisfying, chaptered instalments of  a longer work (LalaZee, Dickens). I am not very good at it (at least, not right now. I'd love to work on this more in the future!).

02 You can see how the conflict is set up and resolved (instead of just being stuck at the set up). 

It is sometimes very difficult for me to get reader’s responses out of my head if I am reading comments while also drafting. (I mean, I have enough difficulty responding to comments on finished stories while also drafting new things. I’m working on it!). 

With one of my longer fics especially, I would sometimes find myself frustrated at reader’s (negative) reactions to things unfolding in the moment, and I wanted to say, “It’s part of the story! This conflict is going to be resolved! This is a necessary step in the narrative!” 

But there’s no gracious way to yell back on the internet. ;)

03 It puts helpful boundaries around my vision of the story. 

This is connected to the second point. I don’t know what it is about the other fandoms that I write in, but I would sometimes get comments like, “They should do this! They should communicate like this! What if this happened instead? Why is it like that?” and I would want to be like, Shhhh, I’ve got this. I know where I’m going. 

Even if you don’t agree with the comments, it takes a certain amount of energy to wrestle with them and put them aside when you actually sit down to write.

I’ve cut out that struggle by basically maintaining my vision of how the work will go, and then releasing it into the world in its complete form.

This makes reader comments more delightful, and (if I’m very lucky) fuel for future fics. :) 

The tears of Mummers House: An experiment with time

“The tears of Mummers House” is a bit different from the other WIPs that I’ve posted before. For one thing, it’s complete. The only editing I do now is day-to-day copy editing to catch embarrassing mistakes before I post a daily chapter (and sometimes even then, I miss things). 

I thought it would be interesting, with this story, to turn my current method (posting a complete story) on its head. To play with delay, with deferral, with denial - which can be so frustrating in the moment, but so satisfying in the end (and now, here's me, struggling not to make a joke about orgasm denial, which is a great kink trope, just *chef's kiss*).

Thewesterndoor said (when I was originally brainstorming this), “It’s like the beginning of Carry On, when Simon is waiting for Baz," and I was like YES.

I love the beginning of Carry On, which reminds me a lot of The Third Man (also an amazing exercise in delay and in pay off). It takes bottle to not have Baz show up until page 152, and I am living for it. 

I want people to feel that frustration, that impatience, that delicious agony: Where’s Baz? Where's Simon? What's going on? What will happen next?

Influences on how “The tears of Mummers House” handles time 

I mentioned in the author’s note to this fic that I adore Dracula Daily. I love the real-time unfolding of that story, the digestible chunks, the cross-talk and delays with the post. 

The posting schedule for “Tears” is also inspired by Dear John by wendymarlowe, an incredible Sherlock fic that also played out in real time. I only found the story afterwards in its completed form, and not as a WIP but it must've been SO COOL to follow along with it when it was live.

One of the most amazing video game experiences I’ve had in the past few years is a game called The Longing. You play as a lonely Shade, waiting 400 days in real time for a sleeping king to wake. Playing this during the pandemic was a fucking mind trip (in a good way). 20 days doesn’t seem quite as bad as 400. 

I cannot contain my excitement

I said in some of my responses to comments that this is an exercise in delay, in denial, and in self-restraint for me as well. I want so badly to just post it all at once, but I also want to see this experiment play out. I love mystery stories but I don’t usually write them, so I am excited to dole out this particular mystery, bit by bit. 

I think there is something very cool about the fact that this story is changing day by day, and that my own author’s notes will eventually have to change. That depending on when you jump in, you might have a completely different reading experience from someone else. And that at the end, when it’s all posted, it’ll become a different beast again. These are things that are true of any WIP, but it’s fun to be playing with that dynamic consciously and deliberately. 

Some of the chapters are so short (as short as some of the chapters in Carry On), and so stark and spare that they are more like poetry. So some days will definitely be more frustrating than others.

But I hope the end result is worth it. I hope that this story gives you something to meditate on,  to look forward to - to dream about.

Dubai 7s Australia’s women and South Africa’s men back up their gold medals from last season, while New Zealand and the USA also make the podium. Blitzboks beat Ireland 21-5 in final on Saturday for seventh triumph in nine years.

Just give them the Emirates Invitational Trophy to keep forever. Or rename the Emirates Dubai 7s “The Blitzboks Invitational”.

South Africa won the World Sevens Series title in Dubai on Saturday night. Of course, they did. It was the fourth time in a row they have won the Middle East’s rugby festival, and the seventh time in nine years.

The last game, against first-time Dubai finalists Ireland, was more or less over before it had even begun.

Shilton van Wyk scored with the first play of the game. He added a second four minutes later, and by half-time, the champions were 21-0 up, with captain Siviwe Soyizwapi claiming an intercept score.

“The game of sevens is a game of no excuses,” Soyizwapi said.

“The level we are playing at this season, all the teams are tough to play against.

“They are stepping up, and there are no easy game. We mentioned that and made sure we were in the right mental space each game that we played.

Van Wyk was the player of the match in the final for his two-try salvo. “We came out there with a plan, and we executed it, like the coaches ask of us,” Van Wyk said.

Note: Too long ago @sonichkkaaascreams snowed into my inbox with the idea of the Shelby!boys x Milf and I do still have an idea for a multi!part series in the back of my mind, I didn't want to keep her waiting so here is John. I also thought of something in regards to Michael, Tommy and Arthur.

You lived not too far where John and Martha used to live during the war. She had only been so young and you had pitied her with three young children and husband  away. So you helped out from time to time, especially when her last pregnancy grew difficult. 

So when you see her second, Johnny, who had been named after his father, with bloody knees after playing in the streets you sat him down on your kitchen table, cleaned him up and even offered to stitch his trousers.

During that time, he played with your children. Even though you were a good five years older than Martha, your children were of an age. 

You send him home once you’re done only to have him come by a few days later explaining that the baby was hurting and that they didn’t know what to do “because Aunt Pol’s out”

You found a house in chaos, with the youngest baby teething and screaming the house down. The other two children were as sleep deprived as their father, who really did try, despite the circles under his eyes and the desperation in his voice. 

You pitied her widower, just as you had pitied Martha, with four young children who either did not know or did not remember him and no idea how to really care about them. 

So you help, and once the baby is soothed with cold cloths to chew on and a massage to the gums (not whisky like his father suggested!) you give John the same offer you had given Martha, that your door was open any time. 

It’s slow at first, but then John Shelby shows up at your door more often, whether it be because a child was ill, or him not knowing how to do Katie’s hair and needing your help

In exchange he offers to help in any way he can, though in the most clumsy way possible - “With the heavy lifting…and stuff..and if anyone’s ever bothering you, I can take care of it.”

You grow to like him because, despite everything he has something so many people had lost - lightheartedness

He doesn’t mind crawling around on the floor pretending to be a horse with children, both yours and his, and doesn't mind playing the fool to make them - and you - laugh. 

After four years of war and hardship, it felt so good to laugh again

John, in turn, starts to like you because you don’t judge him for his mistakes but also because you’ve taken away his fear of failing when it came to his children. 

The rest just happens, really. 

One night, John brought liquor and while the children are asleep you get drunk in the kitchen. After half a bottle he insists on teaching you a dance he learnt as a boy when on the road. 

It is chaotic and wild, more twirling and jumping than actual steps, and it ended up with you both crashing to the ground trying to stifle your drunken laughter to not wake the children. 

You’re not doing all too well and so he silences you with other means

For a while, you were worried that things would change, but in fact nothing did, nothing except the fact that John couldn’t seem to be able to keep his hands to himself whenever even the slightest opportunity struck. 

After all, there wasn’t much time with that many children running around, but whatever time they had, he wanted to make good use of

And, of course, you didn’t mind in the slightest

The concept of this blog... well... it's basically a mix of everything.

Part of it is whatever catches my interest, whether it be nature, food, quotes, clothing, culture, jewelry... you name it. And if there is anything important to share, I'll make sure to post it as well.

Another part of it is related to part of my name: artsandanimation. Music, artworks, fanfictions, animations... anything related to art in general. Being in the arts is my favorite hobby, and I'm always intrigued by what everyone comes up with. I actually have some artworks I made myself (more on that later).

The last part is fandom-related. Currently, my obsession is Animator vs. Animation, but I'm multi-fandom. I am floating from place to place, to see what I can find, because I definitely have a habit of either joining or rejoining fandoms late in the game and missing all the fun taking place. Overall, I live under a rock.

In regards to posts, they'll vary from art to screenshots to reblogs and thoughts (but mostly reblogs).

For any artworks I create, they'll be under the tag link crystalangel artworks (don't ask me how I thought of the first part of the tag, it just randomly came up).

As time passes, it'll mostly be Animator vs. Animation-related (at this point, I might consider creating a masterpost for this particular series), but there will be additional creations as well. Despite me being a self-taught amateur artist at best, I hope you are able to find a little enjoyment in them.

I’ve been so invested in your incall furnishing thing and haven’t heard an update. Have you finished escorting and camming honestly I’ve stopped because of COVID😫

I've bought this so far for the new place:

I've also picked out bar stools and bedroom furniture but it's out of stock.

I'm still working on going back to escorting...and stripping occasionally during slow seasons. I don't plan to return to camming...online sex work isn't for me.

A little back story: I consistently made a lot of money escorting as a big fish in a small pond on the east coast. I randomly decided to move to Colorado without touring there first etc. Really dumb. Moved here and got a nice condo. Slowly realized the money was no where near as good as in my old city. Invested money into building my brand (pro photos and website) instead of using the money to move back or tour other cities. I also became bad at managing my money because I had a mindset of just buying whatever I wanted because "I would make back that money tomorrow" 🙃

Anyways, I ended up pouring my savings into a 2 week tour multi-city tour back in my old state. It flopped! Some ladies might remember when that Chicago cop sued BP for allowing Visa card payments etc. The ads I paid for never went up and I wasn't able to post new ones...it was just a disaster. I expected to make $23k but only made $3k. Horrible.

The final nail on the coffin was a bicycle accident not long after that left me injured for 3 months. I eventually lost my beautiful condo, almost everything I owned and became homeless for 6 months. I was able to board my pets thank god.

I got a vanilla job (my current vanilla job...but this was PT back then) and that enabled me to go back to my old city for 5 days and make $5k...which got me a shitty room in a house.

I quit my vanilla job...eager to put this homelessness in the past etc.

Eventually I started stripping and escorting part time in Colorado but the money still sucked and I had no incall.

I had some health issues (staph infections, weight gain and issues with my period). I decided to go back to my vanilla job. I got a FT job there and was promoted for the first time. Held that position for 3 years before getting promoted a second time last fall. I make very good money for a job not requiring a college degree etc.

Unfortunately, I have a love hate relationship with my vanilla job and it's absolutely soul sucking. I want to move back to the east coast and transition back to escorting full time.

My life revolves around my vanilla job and I usually don't have much energy to focus on my business (fssw) goals - ie eating super healthy and exercising to get back in shape. I have been making some progress in this area and have lost 10 lbs but I have a tight deadline and really need to focus more.

My issues with my period are improving. My cycle has gone from being heavy 17 days long to moderately heavy for 11 days in the last 3 months.

I'm also terrified of becoming homeless again if I leave my vanilla job so now I'm just overthinking every single thing to the point where it's hindering me.

Anyways, that's where I'm at but yeah I need to get back into escorting within the next 6-7 months if I'm going to move back to the east coast when my lease ends in 2022.

If you want to take a break from SW, just get a vanilla job and see how you like it. There's pros and cons to both sides.

HARTFORD WOLF PACK LOOK TO SPLIT WITH HERSHEY BEARS

By: Alex Thomas, Hartford Wolf Pack HERSHEY, PA – The Hartford Wolf Pack will look to earn a split on the road tonight as they visit the Hershey Bears for Game Two of the 2023 Atlantic Division Finals at the Giant Center in Hershey. Puck drop is set for 7:00 p.m., and coverage is available on both AHLTV and Mixlr. Tale of The Tape: The Wolf Pack and Bears met six times during the 2022-23 regular season, with the Bears taking four of the six meetings. Hershey posted a record of 4-2-0-0, while the Wolf Pack managed points in three games, going 2-3-0-1. The Wolf Pack posted a 1-2-0-0 record at the Giant Center, with their lone victory coming on November 20th by a final score of 4-2. The Bears won each of the final three meetings between the sides in the regular season. Hershey took a 2-1 regulation decision on November 25th, and a 1-0 shootout verdict on November 26th. Both of those games were in Hartford. They also claimed a 2-1 victory in Hershey on February 11th. The Bears extended their winning streak against Hartford to four games with a 3-2 overtime decision in Game One of this playoff series. The Wolf Pack opened the scoring with a powerplay goal 6:55 into the game, as Lauri Pajuniemi chipped home a rebound for his fourth goal of the postseason. Just 2:33 into the second period, Jonny Brodzinski fired his first goal of the playoffs by Hunter Shepard. Brodzinski was set up for a one-timer in the left-wing circle by Tanner Fritz, who collected his team-leading seventh assist. The goal was Hartford’s second powerplay tally of the night. They went 2-for-4 in the contest. The Bears responded just 2:52 into the third period, however, as Logan Day scored a powerplay goal of his own. 21. Could you ever quit writing? Do you ever wish you could? Why or why not?

I don't think so. Every time I write a multi-chapter fic, I reach a point about halfway through and then a second time at the second to last chapter, when I think that this is it. After this I will never write again. that's actually the reason why my second fic got so long, because I thought I would quit after that so I stuffed all my favourite tropes into that one fic. But then I come up with a new idea that I can't let go or someone in the comments is really sweet and says something about how they're looking forward to see what I write next and I want to keep writing for them. I guess sometimes I wish I could quit, because writing comes with so much stress and self-doubt that sometimes I wonder if it's worth it. But it is. It is 100% worth it, so I'll keep writing for as long as I can.

31. Write a short love letter to your readers.

To my dearest readers,

when I posted the first chapter to my first fic, I stayed up all night, checking my emails for notifications because I was so afraid that no one would like my fic. Nothing could have prepared me for the joy of receiving my first comments, of seeing that people are interested in the stories I tell. They say, you should only write for yourself and that's advice that I always try to follow. I start writing for myself, but as soon as I receive the first comment, I start writing for you, the readers. There are some fics that are just as much yours as they are mine, because the love you give them, influences the way I write. "To give without knowing" would have been about 4k long, if you hadn't told me you enjoyed it. "Birds still sing" would have never existed if it wasn't for one of you telling me you wanted to read a story like that.

Knowing that someone out there is smiling because of something I wrote, is such a precious feeling and I hope you all know that I have laughed and cried and jumped on my chair because of you. Every kudo gives me confidence and every comment means the absolute world to me, and so do all of you who never interacted with my fics, but read and enjoyed them still. Without you, I wouldn't have stayed in this fandom. You brighten my days and you keep me going.

Someone once told me in the comments that they philia-love me, and that's how I feel about all of you. If you read one of my fics and smiled, if you told a friend about it, if you stayed up all night reading, if you left a comment, I consider you my friend and I am so thankful for all of you.

Ironically, I am not good with words when writing letters. I feel like I am repeating myself or being too sappy. But the thing is, I could say that this is my love letter to you, but that would be untrue. I have already written love letters for you. Every single story that I wrote is a love letter. If you read and liked a fic of mine, then know that I wrote it for you. Every word I write in a story, is a love letter for you, loveliest readers.
