Patreons I Support

Between the impending Twitter collapse, the growth of unethical AI applications in creative spaces, and [gestures broadly at the world], I’m trying to more regularly uplift the art and artists I admire—and in this case, materially support. 

Many folks are familiar with Patreon. If you’re not, Patreon is a membership platform that allows creatives to earn a monthly income and deliver rewards to their subscribers. Ko-fi, Buy Me a Coffee, and Memberful are similar alternatives. 

A lot of Patreon creators offer tangible perks but personally, even if they didn’t, I would still patronize them! Below are the Patreons I currently back:

Kelly Turnbull

I’ve been a fan of Kelly Turnbull’s work for over a decade, starting with her webcomic Manly Guys Doing Manly Things and then everything I’ve seen from her since. Turnbull is an animation director, cartoonist, and remarkable storyteller. I’m not familiar with most of the media she makes fan comics for and I still adore all of it; her capacity to convey complex character relationships is a masterclass in dialogue writing and visual narrative. If I ran a major animation studio I would give her an absurd amount of money and tell her to do literally whatever she wanted, that is how strongly I feel about her work.  

Marlowe Lune’s Merry Blackbird Postcard Society

Marlowe Lune is an illustrator of very trans historical and fantasy subjects. Their art style is stunning, unique, and thoughtfully researched, and subscribing to their Patreon comes with the perk of regular postcards of their prints. My partner and I have a lot of Lune’s art up around our house, and though we cannot put up anymore lest our abode just become a Marlowe Lune tribute gallery, I remain subscribed because I’m a big fan of what they do and the postcards make great gifts.

I read the webcomic What Happens Next earlier this year and immediately went and subscribed to graves’ Patreon because it’s that fucking brilliant. It's an ingenious exploration of queer victim culture and (absence of) accountability and true crime and so much more. One of the main characters is a trans guy who was an accomplice to a murder but won’t delete his My Little Pony tumblr. There’s actually no explanation I can give of WHN that will convey how remarkable it is so you should just go read it. This comic is really special and I’m really looking forward to seeing where graves goes with it and what he creates in the future. 

Possum Creek Games

If you’re a fan of even one Possum Creek Games title (I am a fan of many) or indie tabletop roleplaying games writ large, supporting the Possum Creek Games Patreon is some of the best money you could possibly spend. It gets you access to the wonderful community that is the PCG discord, some behind the scenes stuff, first looks/early access to games, and some really thoughtful more academic-type writing about ttrpgs and storytelling from their Editorial Director, Jay Dragon. Possum Creek is a strong positive force in the indie ttrpg scene and I really appreciate their generative, nuanced, and people-first approach to everything. 

Snake Discovery

Snake Discovery is an educational reptile YouTube channel (and now zoo). There are a lot of deeply unethical animal content creators and so I appreciate that the people behind the channel, Ed and Emily, are thoughtful, transparent, and very specific about standards of care. I really love reptiles but do not presently have one or plan to have one in my care any time soon, so I enjoy living vicariously through the dozens of videos of baby snakes they share each year.  

There are other wonderful creators out there whose work I greatly admire but unfortunately I cannot support infinite Patreons. If you love an artist’s work and you have the means, I strongly encourage you to find a way to regularly support what they do, whether that’s via Patreon or some other means.

Wolfstar: a tired tired old man. He was very worried about his reputation, so he hid his relationship with his mate Reia. Reia: a former kittypet. She's very sweet but not afraid to kick someone's ass to protect her babies. Possumcreek: The oldest daughter of wolf and reia. She's very determined to raise her status in the clan, as everyone just knows her as the kittypet's daughter. Fawnpaw: possum's little sister. She's a quiet and clumsy medicine cat apprentice who's content with her life.

Wolfstar - A serious and proud tom. Wolfstar’s reputation means everything to him, he believes that his reputation is tied directly to that of his clan so he will do anything to keep it pristine. He loves Reia but his he felt like he couldn’t afford to compromise the reputation he built up for himself. He is a decisive and diplomatic leader, he gets things done swiftly and efficiently he isn’t above using veiled threats to discourage other clans from messing with his, even in times of peace, he has to make sure. He will never let anyone know that he just feels that he doesn’t have the strength to deal with many more battles, he wants to live out his remaining life/lives in peace, 14/10

Reia - A gentle and courageous she-cat. As long as you don’t mess with her kits, Reia is a very sweet and friendly cat, and is often viewed as a motherly figure but many cats in the clan even if they aren’t actually her children. StarClan help anyone who dares harm her babies, she will come at them like a warrior of LionClan and leave them with several scars to remember her by, despite her kittypet past and her sweet nature she is an extremely efficient and skilful fighter when she needs to be, 14/10

Possumcreek - A determined and proud she-cat. Possumcreek loves her mother, but she’s ashamed of the fact that half of her is kittypet, and she is determined to prove herself as the daughter of a leader rather than that of a kittypet. She has worked hard all her life to try and elevate her reputation and status, and she takes any kind of criticism hard, and she works all the harder to remove any kind of “flaw” that she believes she has. She will often try and get the leadership of as many patrols as she can to prove herself in the eyes of her clanmates, 15/10

Fawnpaw- An introverted and kind she-cat. Fawnpaw tries her best to be a good apprentice, whenever she gets a little clumsy she gets flustered, leaving her prone to getting clumsier so her mentor will encourage her to do short breathing exercises when she’s flustered to help her calm down. Fawnpaw has always wanted to be a medicine cat and she feels so lucky to be able to be one. Unlike her sister she isn’t ashamed of her kittypet heritage, and she loves both her parents dearly, life is going pretty well for her right now,14/10

Crabheart: wolfstar's father. I said wolfstar was old, well he's really, really old, but refuses to retire. he mentored possumcreek. Sootstar: Bluefern's mom and the former leader. she went to the dark forest for accidentally killing someone and proceeding to go down a dark path. Froststar: Bluefern's father. He's in starclan. Yellowpaw: Bluefern's brother who died of sickness when they were apprentices. (Felt like doing some oldies/ghosts, know you didn't finish my last one yet, sorry)

Crabheart - A determined and serious tom. Crabheart’s clanmates have mixed feelings about whether they should admire or be frustrated with the old warrior, Crabheart will always stick by what he has said or done, and any attempt to convince him otherwise only serves to strengthen his resolve. Crabheart is very set in his ways, he believes things should be a certain way, and he has a very predictable routine. Crabheart will always give his honest opinion, and he will never sugarcoat it, he doesn’t believe that dancing around anyone’s feelings benefits anyone, the truth is all that matters, and whenever Crabheart has an opinion about something, everyone will very soon know what it is, 15/10

Sootstar- A proud and serious she-cat. Sootstar can never admit her own faults or mistakes and is always quick to pass blame onto anything that isn’t herself, often the other clans, she certainly knows how to stir up tension. Sootstar believes that a clan should be organised and disciplined, and so she takes great care in making sure her apprentices are trained to the highest standard, and she won’t hesitate to delay warrior ceremonies until apprentices are up to her standard. Whenever Sootstar lies she only lets it grow, she doesn’t know how to stop, especially if it’s to cover her own tracks, she will do anything to uphold her reputation as a fierce yet disciplined leader, 14/10

Froststar- An intelligent and wise tom. Froststar is greatly admired by all, and is still talked of with the highest respect by those that knew him while he was alive. Froststar never jumps to conclusions, he always takes in all the facts he can before making any kind of decision, he doesn’t like getting things wrong and causing unnecessary hardship because of it. Froststar was regarded as wise even before he joined StarClan, he always knows exactly what to do and always puts emotions aside so he can approach problems with a calm and level head, making him a great negotiator and peace keeper,14/10

Yellowpaw - An introverted and optimistic tom. When Yellowpaw was alive, he always believed that things will get better, and always seemed to find some kind of good in the world, he retains that attitude in StarClan in spite of his tragic death. Yellowpaw gets nervous talking to cats that aren’t his close friends or kin, and is very prone to being shy, often unable to speak even if he wants to due to nerves, but he never shut up around Bluepaw, the two of them got on like a tree on fire, and he misses her every day, 14/10
