On Isolation, Solitude, and facing loneliness, a photo essay
Portra400 | Loners in Hong Kong | taken in 2017 - 2019
Isolation and solitude are very different concepts. While isolation could be in form of restriction act by authorities as punishment, or by external force which in our case this long standing pandemic, solitude on the other hand is more an inward feeling and could be a choice that one embraces. Learning how to practice solitude could help us coupe with extreme situations including what we are experiencing, an enforced isolation and loneliness in a very long period of time.
Nowadays people take mediation as an antidote against our materialistic world. With overexposure of information and thanks to our advancement in technology we realise what promises to connect us is actually doing the opposite, leaving us in with emptiness and loneliness, and that is the way we are heading towards.
Reading is one my favourite escape that requires being solitude, the ultimate way to practice voyage when travelling becomes hazardous to health. It is how one could possibly stand out among others when everyone is getting information through internet or social media. And good thing is, time used to be limited in our modern world but becomes relative abundant when there is a pandemic.
A café with one seaters might against economical norms. When I was in Shanghai, my good friend took me to one of my favourite café in the world and they serve nothing more than coffee with a regular taste. The only difference they made was to put a nose level monitoring device on wall that beeped whenever the interior noise level exceed certain Decibels. They promised their customers a measurable level of silence.
In architecture, we tend to design to encourage communication among users of the space and in other words making elimination of loneliness as architects' ultimate goal. Openness is one of the long lasting trends in office and school design to promote collaboration, idea exchange and team work. We were taught to believe an open plan with communal tables promotes efficiency and is far better than space of one’s own. If one wants to make a private call there is always a soundproof phone booths in the corner of an open office.
The grand invention of 'learning from home' is one of the biggest challenge to parents in pandemic. Zoom meetings at 8:30am with teachers and pile of emails on homework promote not just bonding but also anxiety. Good thing is, I finally have more understanding on the school curriculum. While critical thinking and collaboration with others becomes essential survival skills in future when most of the jobs are not even been emerged, I begin to wonder the importance of teaching our children about the art of solitude, especially when isolation and loneliness are being promised.

The fair is a really interesting collection of the loudest design possible. I’ve stared at this image for a while trying to pick out what message to get out of it—obviously fish is being sold, but my mind jumps from each piece wildly before registering what to order. Obviously I went for the deep fried Oreo at the next stall. • Orange County Fair • Kodak Portra 400 • • • • #ocfair #orangecountyfair #fairfood #kodak #portra400 #shootfilm #orangecounty #deepfried #fairgrounds (at Orange County, California) https://www.instagram.com/p/Ch6Gb_oLl6W/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Lower Queen Anne. Despite the rebranding it “Uptown” possibly by the developers to make the neighborhood sound more appealing, I have not yet met anyone who refers to Lower Queen Anne as the Uptown (even as the signs suggest it). #invisiblehour #Minolta #Apex #105 #APZ #35mm #film #filmphotography #istillshootfilm #filmsnotdead #filmisnotdead #portra400 #kodak #capitolhill206 #lqa #lowerqueenanne #timestamp (at Lower Queen Anne, Seattle)

Mon premier réflexe argentique: Le ZENIT EM

[8/30] “Memphis All-Stars” — I spent a good chunk of time this summer in Memphis getting my life right with my “cousins”. Each one of these individuals brought so much life and inspiration to me at a time when I wanted to be far away from the hustle of the Valley. The amount of love, openness, camaraderie and encouragement I experienced day-to-day gave me deeper assurance that my own vision for community is not only possible, but that I already had everyone and everything I need to live out his vision. . From the booming sounds of @artistiklounge, to the Toozdy gatherings of the minds, to attending film premieres at the @thecltv in Orange Mound, to reminiscing about family with @cydeyes, to geeking out over Avengers: Endgame — Memphis was one of the places I needed to be this summer. So much soul. So much heart. So many good memories. So much Memphis. I love you all, cousins and I will be back again soon. #feelslikesummer19 . Shot on #Portra400 #35mmfilm #nikon. April 2019. . P.S. — If you are in our around Memphis this weekend, pull up to @creativeworks.co everso if the Spirit compels you. A day no different than today. I went out this day because it had been raining off and on, and I was hoping for more rain and less sun, but had to find shelter (from the sun bc I avoid it as much as possible🤦♂️) under this palm when I noticed this angle. I just got lucky with that sunburst ✨ #portra400 (at Sherman Heights, San Diego) https://www.instagram.com/p/Bxr9fKUnvMy/?igshid=y2vggvc0dguh

I always hesitate for a split second before stopping the car to take a picture -thinking if it’s worth it.. and most of the times it’s not. But I’d still much rather take the picture and throw it away later than regret not stopping for one. I have a couple of those from the last trip. My goal for the future is to miss as few shots as possible. Shoot first, think later! ✌🏼#leicam6 #35mm #filmphotography #kodak #portra400

One of my favourite things to do when travelling is to simply observe. When you don't fully understand the languages being spoken around you, I feel like you are more tuned into reading people's expressions, feelings, moods. You're somehow less distracted. This little girl was amazing to watch. She couldn't possibly be expected to understand the concept of how old her surroundings were, but she was intent on exploring. Her way. We could learn a lot from this girl. 😎 .
