Hickory is my favorite Trolls character, not because of his canon (all he did was flirt with Poppy, have a scene with the Smooth Jazz troll, and then have a liar revealed moment. Every other second he was vibing) but because of the grip he has on fans. I think I've seen about a dozen characters shipped with him, and I can see every single one of them as being canon.

This started as a perspective/anatomy practice (it-- it was procrastination--I am procrastinating my life rn) and then evolved because, as said before, this au will not leave my head (i’m sure it’s just a passing fancy lol). So here’s a few more things.

This was Henry’s first big controversial moment in his career, his ‘iconic moment in pop culture’. From his outfit (the first one Basil was in charge of styling/designing for him) to his pose and the fact his fly is just intentionally fully open (he knew who his fans were and what they wanted), this all cemented his provocative reputation. Also it was the 70s, people were looking for anything to call controversy. After that performance, Basil became Henry’s main stylist (despite just wanting to paint a portrait of him lmao).

Henry, despite claiming to be (and certainly trying to present as) punk rock star, always had more of a natural proclivity to the rock star part. No one considers him punk, even with how much star power he has. Him being the second son to a lord and also rich just confirmed he wasn't for everyone who was actually punk.  At most, he’d pull shit like the above and then people would kind of see why he thought himself punk. He even had to learn how to do a London accent because he naturally speaks in RP, aka he sounds like a rich man. 

tldr: Henry is a complete poser.

The outfit used references from this one picture of the Sex Pistols and these two Vivienne Westwood pieces. All referenced images and my reasonings for choosing them (because I like to yap and yall can’t stop me) will be under the cut.

The Sex Pistols were one of the 'faces' of 70s punk (go listen to some of their music---it's good!) and their style felt like something Henry would imitate. I wish I could tell you more about them, but admittedly, I just started listening to them last year. (i, like henry, am a poser, i'm so sorry/lh). Anyways that top was fun to draw!

These are the two references by Vivienne Westwood (Dress [right], Shirt [left]). I took the ruffled part of Dress to add to the top Henry wears because, keeping with the idea that Henry is being dressed/styled by Basil, Basil probably leaned into Romantic influences, while trying to match the punk vibes Henry wanted. The little leg strap in Shirt became the weird edgy straps Henry has on his wrists. On my end, that was just for vibes lol.

something I've been thinking about lately. i do think it's incredibly telling that almost 80 percent of the conversations around 'gatekeeping' and 'posers' and shit end up just becoming vitriolic hatred of 'alt girls' like i hate shit spotify playlists and dollskill fake leather edge and tiktok recommendations as much as the next person but this is a very big attitude coming from a website full of people who spent their formative middle school years shopping at hot topic for multi-colored skinny jeans while listening to like. falling in reverse or 21p unironically (this is a self-own btw). first of all teenagers having shit taste isn't killing punk music. but also why is the object of your hatred always boil down to a woman faking it? as if it isn't the single oldest stereotype in heavy music? like am i insane for thinking this is an issue

Had a good convo with a none punk friend (very communist tho) who 1. Listened to me ranting about the tik tok girlies who think Hobie and Eddie were written for them and 2. About how punk culture is fighting a war against becoming capitalismed by these trends because we’re being decently repped in modern media and people are taking Punk culture and abusing it for their own gain

This friend let me rant about how kids talk about how folks deserve kindness then turn around and call cops on unhoused folk asking for a glass of water on a hot day

And they just turn to me and say

“Dude, I have mad respect for punks, because that’s something that really doesn’t want to gatekeep but has needed to gatekeep to protect the good it does, like ur some of the only valid people who Need to gatekeep and you desperately try not to”

Which led to me ranting about how these posers infect pits and punch people unprompted because that’s what they think pits “are”

This is endlessly frustrating and infuriating and I know I’m not the only one who feels this

Punk isn't a fashion. Punk isn't an aesthetic. Punk isn't a style. Punk is about making really terrible music, having a surface-level understanding of communist theory, never washing your hair and constantly saying that everyone else who calls themselves punk isn't really punk.

I think I just met some posers :(( Im at a sleepover and it's awesome, but you were supposed come as goth/emo. Ofc I asked them what their fav music creators were, and one said ED SHEERAN. :((((

Then when we played music, one didnt know who SLIPKNOT was 😰 and they both didn't know Welcome to the Black Parade (ik not all ppl listen to MCR, but it's like the most basic one).....

They both only know TX2...and we're listening to TEETH rn 😭😭 the host claims to be goth/wants to be goth, but we played Katy Perry... I'm pretty sure she doesn't even know what goth music is, or that alt is a music based subculture... (Please recommend me some goth songs to play, I listen to scene/emo rock and want to help her)

Even though i listen to the same music as them and have traveled with crusties to watch crust shows multiple times..... Like not a single crustpunk has had a problem with me irl and ive met dozens of crustpunks

I dont think ppl should get blasted for looking like posers (educating them and encouraging them is how you get less posers) but istg im sometimes so tempted to start poser wars with some of them because they reek of insecurity when people come up with such reasons to call ppl posers. Are they a Poser or are they just a beginner? Are they a poser or do you just not like their jacket?

Youre a poser if you dont understand the base principles of punk and dont care for the music. Thats it. Someone having a meme patch is not reason enough to call then posers, and even if they are, COMMUNITY SUPPORT, RESPECTFULLY TEACH THEM BETTER.

With how prominent no true poser arguments are, every punk has been called a poser lol so the longer youre a punk the more desensitized you become to it but like leave the newbies alone guys shahshsh

I wholeheartedly agree with this post and the excerpt I am posting here is 100% accurate but fwiw as someone who likes both punk and The Ramones if someone claimed to be a punk and I asked what bands they liked and they said The Ramones and the Sex Pistols I would call them a poser.
