Portal Drawtober 2023: Day 8
Favorite Mod
I love Portal Stories Mel a lot, so I wanted to have a nod to that with the mix of decayed and new, but that gave a good excuse to take some focus onto another mod I really enjoyed, Portal Reloaded!

in Portal: Reloaded, the triple-portal device (two linked space portals and one time portal) is just a retextured dual portal device with green stripes. But what if it had a custom model?

Smumbo's top 10 games he happened to play in 2022
Not necessarily games that were released in 2022, just my favorites that I played for the first time last year.
10: Night in the Woods (2017)
by Alec Holowka, Scott Benson, and Bethany Hockenberry
Peak fall vibes game. Night in the Woods features a compelling mystery and some great spooky moments. The setting and characters really resonated with me, so I got a lot out of it.
9: The Pedestrian (2020)
by @skookumarts
Pleasant puzzle game inspired by the signage that surrounds us in our day-to-day lives. Some of the puzzles were quite difficult, and I kind of dislike the direction the game took in its last act, but it was still a very fun and unique experience.
8: South of South Mountain (2022)
by @colorbomb
Cute & hilarious visual novel with a fantastic art style. I could not stop laughing throughout the whole experience.
7: Portal Reloaded (2021)
by PORTANIS
From a pure gameplay standpoint, this was a very satisfying sequel to Portal 2, and it's possibly the closest we'll ever get to a Portal 3. Portal Reloaded introduces a third portal which allows you to travel to the same place at a different time, so certain things have been moved/removed. It gets really complicated, and I’m amazed this was able to be created as a free standalone mod for Portal 2.
6: Frog Detective: The Entire Mystery (2022)
by Grace Bruxner and Thomas Bowker
Approximately 3-4 hours of pure, unadulterated joy and whimsy. I can’t believe it took me this long to play Frog Detective, but I’m so glad I did. Everything about these games resonated with me strongly.
5: OneShot (2016)
by @girakacheezer, @nightmargin, and Eliza Vasquez
A transcendent experience. Explores the unique ways in which video games can tell stories, and the nature of free will. Features some interesting meta game mechanics which require you to interact with files outside of the game. The visuals and soundtrack are spot-on as well. Weird how there’s so many great RPG Maker games which work so well in spite of the engine.
4: Scorn (2022)
by Ebb Software
An incredible audiovisual experience. I liked the gameplay too, even though it seems like a lot of people were disappointed by it. I'm amazed that a game like this even exists. Absolutely oozing with atmosphere and symbolic meaning. The story spoke to me on an incredibly deep level despite lacking words, or even any semblance of humanity.
3: What Remains of Edith Finch (2017)
by Giant Sparrow
One of the greatest games ever made. All of the vignettes and set-pieces throughout the game are flawlessly paced, with a wide variety of gameplay and visual styles. Packed with detail, made with love, and so emotionally resonant. I loved this game.
2: Bloodborne (2015)
by From Software
For years, I would try to play Bloodborne whenever I had access to a PlayStation 4, but I wasn’t able to do a full playthrough until 2022. It lived up to the hype. This is my favorite From Software game, and it’s already one of my favorite games of all time. I really hope this gets a remaster/PC port some day. It’s a masterpiece.
1: SIGNALIS (2022)
by @rose-engine
One of the greatest horror games I’ve ever played. Amazing visuals and atmosphere, fascinating world and lore, and a captivating, mind-blowing cosmic horror sci-fi story. I especially loved the evocative UI designs throughout. Highly recommended if you like Silent Hill, Resident Evil, Dead Space, PS1 style games in general, or if you have even a passing interest in survival horror. This is my #1 game of 2022.

Alright, so. I went and played Portal Reloaded again, and until I figure out some more things from Mel, the timeline is looking like.
Rexaura -> Portal Reloaded (stable/past side) -> Portal -> Portal Reloaded (unstable/future side) -> Portal: Revolution -> Portal Stories: Mel -> Portal 2 -> Portal 2 (Co-op main campaign) -> Aperture Tag -> Portal 2 (Co-op additional campaign)
Slowly checking out the co-op of Portal Reloaded to see if that adds something
#Portal#Portal 2#Portal Stories: Mel#Portal: Revolution#Portal Reloaded#Rexaura#Aperture Tag#<- you can tell I want this one to appear everywhere XD

In the depths of Aperture Science, they tell stories. Short tales are told, murmured softly in warm metallic tones. Stories are thrown around, embellished and exaggerated to the point of near-unrecognizability. GLaDOS was nearly destroyed by a human! The human was about to flood her servers, and then some moron fucked the whole operation up, getting them both killed. Her ghost probably still walks around here like the rat man. Whispers when the camera’s light doesn't blink. Some days, it makes Fact Core angry. He was there, he says to anyone he hears parroting the false narrative. It's worse than those facts he hears about Babe Ruth supposedly dying of “cancer" instead of all those hot dogs, since he was there–it’s not just true, it's additionally real. Something he was there for. But even still, he doesn't have all the details. He was only there for the end, when the human got the most interesting idea he'd ever seen, when he was the sole surviving core, when he saw GLaDOS try as hard as she could with all her effort to save that human—
Some days, Fact Core wishes he could meet the human. Set the record straight.
Then again, she's probably dead.
In the sunny fields of the surface, they tell stories. Warm voices whistling among amber grain. There's so many people with such similar backgrounds, all telling their own stories. Mel, with such a similar name, regained her voice, talking about a core named Virgil and how she knows about GLaDOS, how she was an Olympic runner before all of this, back in the ‘50s. 4509, usually silent, talks about time travel and GLaDOS too, about fighting off headcrab zombies with nothing but an inactive portal gun. Tag, who doesn't even remember their name, talks about an annoying little jerk named Nigel and having to climb out of Aperture, no thanks to the core. On some days, Chell wants to tell her own story, put those sign language skills to work. She knows that 4509 knows sign language, so it's not as though no one would understand her, but—they wouldn't get it. There's nothing that quite compares to the experience of GLaDOS speaking to you directly, with such fervent animosity. It can't be put into words, let alone gestures.
Some days, Chell wishes she could go back there. Feel it one more time.
Then again, she'd probably die.

Fin or Bin: Portal Reloaded
Nngh oh god, oh god my brain-
I’m sure everyone reading this has already played the two Portal games. You may even have played some of the many fan-made mods for the series; I have a few recommendations if not. Portal Stories: Mel, Portal Flash Map Pack, and TAG The Power Of Paint are three great experiences that either give you more of what you like or give you something new and different to play with, and as they are all free I heartily recommend you check them out.
New to the pantheon is Portal Reloaded, which despite the title is not a remake. Reloaded adds a new type of portal that lets you travel twenty years into the future, where everything is just as you left it (though even Aperture is not immune to the inexorable decay of time). In practice this means you essentially have two versions of the test chamber to solve at once. Objects from the future can be brought back to the present but not vice versa, and actions in the present alter the fate of the future; boxes will despawn and portals will dissipate if their location in the present is altered.
The result is utterly mind-bending as you not only need to contend with spatial awareness but also causality. Taking a box from the future into the present to solve one problem will then pose a brand new problem as you are now unable to move its present version without altering its fate and deleting it from the future which despawns it in the present. Argh!
The Portal series is known for its sense of humour which many have tried to mimic to greatly mixed success. There are no quirky cores in Reloaded- the humour is kept contained to brief voice overs at the start and end of each puzzle, and the effort is overall pretty sound. Nothing laugh-out-loud as yet but some decent chuckles.
Fin or Bin:
I’ve been taking it in bitesized sessions to avoid cooking my brain. The mechanics are slightly janky but it’s been entirely workable so far, and the puzzle design is out of this world. I’m always in awe of expertly-made puzzle games as I could never create something even passable. Reloaded is free to anyone who owns Portal 2, which is almost certainly you (sales are coming up if not), and comes recommended. At the current rate it’s going to take me twenty years to Finish it, at which point I’ll give my present-day self a hearty thumbs-up.

One of the "good" things about being a system is being able to kinda go through our old special interests and the like for the first time. Like I was only around for the tail end of our Portal 2 hyperfixation, and I can feel it tugging at my mind with all the mods I've been meaning to play in earnest. However, I don't really remember our first playthroughs of any of the Portal 2 stuff we did, so now I feel like I could get effectively a 1st playthrough of it with my perspective as opposed to Loki / the old host that she split from's perspectives.

Portal New Age of Testing [RP Server]
𝗝𝘂𝘀𝘁 𝗹𝗼𝗼𝗸 𝗮𝘁 𝗮𝗹𝗹 𝘁𝗵𝗼𝘀𝗲 𝘁𝗲𝘀𝘁 𝘀𝘂𝗯𝗷𝗲𝗰𝘁𝘀! 𝗧𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗸 𝗼𝗳 𝗔𝗟𝗟 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘁𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴...! 𝗬𝗼𝘂'𝘃𝗲 𝘀𝗮𝘃𝗲𝗱 𝘀𝗰𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲!
Portal 3: New Age of Testing is a NEW literate and passionate group of Portal fans exploring and collaboratively writing out the aftermath of Portal 2's cooperative mode! Join us and bring YOUR very own unique dampening sphere, test subject, or other original character into a new era for the Aperture Science Enrichment Center, or explore past eras of Aperture and claim your favorite canonically established characters from the Portal games and mods themselves!
─────────
This server focuses on an expansion in Aperture's scope of testing beyond simple portal testing. With the success of the cooperative testing initiative, GLaDOS has begun to explore the possibilities for additional testing initiatives, as well as the return of the original singular portal testing tracks she began with.
With hundreds of newly discovered trapped subjects and a plethora of dampening spheres, turrets, and other sentient Aperture Science technologies under GLaDOS, Aperture has entered a glorious new age. One where subjects are tested under a more benevolent and human A.I, but also a simultaneously more powerful and ambitious one as well...
─────────
- A beautiful server layout and roadmap to help you navigate and join the roleplay in no time!
- Flashback era categories for those more interested in Aperture's past than its present!
- Testing initiative categories and chambers, allowing human and android test subjects alike to think with MORE than portals!
- A supportive and loving community of talented writers that will help you fit your own characters and writing into the server's roleplay!
- Lots and lots of cake!

Hello! You may know me from my main blog @chaoticcutiewhirl but this blog can be basically seen as a sort of ad. Before you Scroll, let me explain. Portal New Age of Testing is an RP server, me and my friend Fludd worked hard on, there are so many plans such as adding game elements to the RP and trying to create a world set after Portal 2 that will eventually touch upon Half-life. I will be planning to post a couple of RP snippets through my time here, as possible ideas of what you are getting into, and yes, I will mark it when it is other Writers other than me on the RP which will be almost always. If you see this and think RP is childish, well you are kind of right, only thing is, that RP is also played as a game as well as a possibility to get better at writing. Do you want to better thrink of how to write internal dialogue, boom you have testing and having your character try to figure out what to do. Do you want to test a character idea for something you’re writing? Well as long as it fits within canon, test them in RP. Do you just want to find possible online writing friends? Well this server can also have your back. We are already on Disboard but I am trying to reach out here as well because Tumblr is mainly an artist alley, which includes writers and writing side of Tumblr, if you played Portal (and its tumblr, of course you have, its ome of the most lgbtq+ kinda games from a big company), come over and join, we will be happy to have you. We also have a fairly strong artist side of the server with members like Fludd for example creating the gif and video from above, all on his own may I add.
Simply put, if you have an itch to write portal and you don’t want to write a fan fic, come over and join us, everyone is welcomed!
