have i talked about youtuber!jarra au on here before?
au where jarra contacts her family at 14 and finds out just how very adored she is and after getting to know them for a while she decides to make a youtube channel under her legal betan name (jarra tell feren, because she won't be jarra tell morrath for another few years and she doesn't want to use her legal earth name for privacy reasons)
the videos she makes are just general things about life on earth, and it doesn't really occur to her to clarify that she herself has Immune Syndrome because it's just such an integral part of her that everyone around her already knows
but her first video ends up going viral in beta sector - because of course it does, she's a daughter of the noble Tell clan of Zeus - and it eventually becomes obvious from the comments that the people in her audience just kinda? assumed that she was norm-born? she had mentioned at one point in her video that her father was the commanding officer of the earth solar arrays, so people just assumed she visited earth often to spend time with her dad in his off hours. it doesn't help that she often records her videos in one of the military accommodation domes for solar array workers (again, for privacy reasons).
so she decides to see how long she can keep this up, while taking advantage of her newfound fame to teach people about what earth is really like.
she starts off pretty tame, just showing videos about popular earth tourist attractions like mount everest, pompeii, stonehenge, etc. and then eventually she starts branching out into things like the discrimination faced by people with immune syndrome, the corruption of hospital earth, etc.
over time, she starts to notice that she's gathering a following from other sectors as well, and starts including videos about betan culture to help destigmatize beta sector as well, which gains her even more popularity with her betan audience.
by the time she enters universty asgard for history, she's got a huge audience, and most of her classmates (as well as playdon) are either her subscribers, or at least know of her, so no one even thinks to be suspicious of her cover story.
eventually, after solar 5 crashes into new york main, jarra naturally becomes the star of the story, not just because she's a famous internet personality, but also because 2 of the people she had to help save were her own parents.
it's at that point that her secret comes out.
naturally, there are people who are upset about her deception. but at this point she's been an internet celebrity for several years and she's so well-beloved by her audience and has done so much work towards destigmatizing handicapped folks that the reaction isn't nearly as negative as she'd always worried about.

25thcenturyrpffan asked wallamcranesarchnemesis:
Are you doing yuletide this year or are you too busy? IDK how you feel about historical rpf, but I don't know anyone else who cares at all about like. anyone from the 22nd century, much less all my favorite anti-war activists (Eowyn Riggsby is so underrated!) and I'd love to coordinate nominations if you want
(also, do you have a favorite 22nd century activist?)
wallamcranesarchnemesis:
hi, thanks for the ask!
i've personally never been into rpf, although in past years i've usually participated in the Defenders big bang event
this year i unfortunately won't have any time to participate in any fandom events though. i'm an archaeologist on one of the Earth teams (please don't ask which one) and what with so many of the off-world archaeology teams preparing to go on the Fortuna expedition, things have been understandably very hectic at work. my team leader has had me picking up a lot of extra responsibilities, so i'll likely be very inactive on here for the forseeable future
as for 22nd century activists - sorry, that's not really my area of expertise 😅 i tend to hyperfixate more on the mid twentieth century, with the space race and all that.
in case you hadn't already guessed from my url...the 22nd century is a bit of a sore subject for me.
my inbox is always open for a good infodump though if you wanted to tell me more about your favourites!

This is about 50% hypothetical, but would any Earth Girl/HIVE mind fans out there be interested in a Big Bang style writing challenge?

Can I do your ask game again? 👀 I'm curious about Stardancer or Metacognition!!
Of course! I love getting asks! (Send another ask if you want me to continue this, or if you'd like to hear some more about Metacognition)
So, for Stardancer, the idea is basically that Betha meets Jarra before she meets Drago. Let's say that some Military scientists want to find out if the Handicapped could become workers on the Earth solar arrays. To that end, they set up a program where solar array workers come to science classes as specialist lecturers teaching about the Earth solar arrays and the work they do. Betha is one of these workers, and the science class she comes to happens to be Jarra's.
Her bullying science teacher doesn't like someone else barging into her classroom, and she certainly isn't going to change her teaching style for them, Military or not. So she singles out Jarra and starts being horrible and cruel, at which point Betha steps in, says that she's reporting the science teacher. They get into an argument, which Betha wins, and then Betha starts her lesson. The kids are all actually listening to her, mostly because they're a little in awe of her defeating their science teacher, but eventually Jarra raises her hand to ask a question.
Snippet time!
I looked at the class of students that I was telling about my job. They all seemed very attentive, excited even, though I had a feeling most of them were far more excited about the fact that I had threatened to report their bully of a teacher than the actual information. Then one of them, the defiant girl that had been singled out at the beginning of class, raised her hand. I came to a stopping point, paused, and pointed. "What's your question?" I asked, trying to come off as friendly.
"Why do we need to learn this if we can't leave Earth?" she said, a little bitter but not overly confrontational.
"Because the Military want even stupid apes like you to learn—"
"Shut up," I said. She shut up.
I turned back to the class. "To answer your question, we're not entirely sure that going into Earth orbit will trigger your immune system problem. It might, but the Military aren't actually sure yet."
I paused. The entire class seemed in awe at the prospect, but none of them moreso than the girl that had asked the question. She was looking at me like I was Adonis, and she was Major Kerr. "Strictly speaking, I'm not supposed to tell you the exact purpose behind this lesson, but..." The children all looked up at me pleadingly. "...I have a feeling some of you have already worked it out for yourselves. We'd like to find out if Earth orbit is safe for you, and possibly recruit some of you once you're older if it is, and that's easiest if you all have a base level of knowledge about us solar array workers."
****
After the class period ended, the girl—Jarra Reeath, based on a seating chart I had belatedly noticed at the front of the room—cornered me.
"Do you think I could be a solar array worker?" she demanded desperately.
Well, that was a loaded question. The best thing I knew to do with those was tell the truth. "Maybe," I said. "Even assuming it's safe for you to be in Earth orbit, it takes a lot of work. You need to be physically able, reasonably intelligent, and have a good amount of scientific knowledge." Jarra looked determined to overcome each of those obstacles, until the last one. Then, her face fell.
"I hate science," she said.
"It doesn't have to be your favorite subject to work on a solar array. But... I have a feeling you could be very good at science, with the right teacher."
Jarra looked towards the door. "She always says I'm stupid."
I snorted. "That woman is obviously a terrible teacher. I've not even met her for a day and I can see that." I paused. "Can I ask you for something?"
"What?"
"Prove her wrong for me, okay?" Then, I hesitated. Almost without thinking, I added, "And call me if you have any more questions," then gave her my mail address.

the absolute arhgggg I feel whenever someone tells Jarra to shut up is pain because she obviously loves what she does and she should be able to talk about it with her friends! Let the girl speakkkk. also random theory time,
so Jarra felt like a really young child in the first portal book when she made her decision to come to Asgard U. Now, Jarra did not seem like that in the two prequel books, she was an intelligent teenager with a decent emotional maturity. (Mostly thru avoidance but she was doing good)
then when book one starts Jarra is acting like she’s 10 or 11, she’s making rash decisions and her logic is faulty and angry. I… can’t knock this up to her being angry, Jarra gets plenty angry in the books and never reacts like this. I think it was her being devestated. Jarra struggle with emotions so when she found the dead body she was in shock, she set everything up but when she found out the details she was FURIOUS, like dangerously do, but she was also devastated because I mean who wouldn’t be. Anyways, from Jarras reaction when her parents died we know she reacts badly to devestation like really badly, like go into fugue state badly. But Jarra couldn’t do that because she had no fantasy land to go to then, so she made a subconscious different choice to instead age regress of some sort. I don’t really know if this is what Janet intended but it is what I got from that because of how Jarra acts in the prequels vs the first book but idk

Thought Fiddlestan was a purely comedic ship for a while but now I get it, I see the light. It’s about a man who nurtures and cares for others to the point of heartbreak meeting a man who doesn’t remember what it’s like for anyone to care about him. It’s about them being warm together around the absence of someone they both love. It’s about Fiddleford’s innate domesticity comforting a man whose deepest desire was to come home. It’s about falling in love with the same face again but in a new context that heals your past trauma. It’s about Stan’s unbridled affection finally validating someone who desperately needed the recognition. It’s also about very funny old man yaoi.

so i've been thinking a lot about names in beta sector recently
specifically, i've been thinking about how in earth flight when they were talking about jarra and fian's betrothal, it's mentioned that only descendants of tellon blaze can take on the tell clan prefix. it's why gemena kept her ray clan prefix, and why fian, riak, and persephone sr didn't have prefixes at all.
now we know that other clans don't have this kind of rule because during the drago tell dramis sequence, iirc the kar clan wanted to adopt dr mandanna into the clan and said that they could use whichever version of the clan prefix they would like
anyways, given how much status in beta sector is tied to one's clan and their clan's status, i can imagine that people who don't have clan prefixes would face discrimination, wouldn't they? even if they WERE still part of a clan? like for outlanders it's not so much of a big deal, since people tend to give a little more grace for them if they're clanless
but like. i'm specifically thinking of the honour children of tell clan members without the prefix.
before her honour ceremony, drago's younger sister Persephone would be Persephone Tell [mother's last name]. But when she goes through the honour ceremony and becomes Persephone Incarnate, does she get to keep her prefix? Become Persephone Tell Incarnate?
It depends on how strict the naming conventions of the honour child ceremony are, right? We know that they provide exceptions for gender - hence why Draco's honour child is named Dracia, and why Jarra had mentioned that if she had been born a boy she would have been named Jarrack. So would they also have an exception for betan clan prefixes?
On another note, I'm also thinking about triad marriages, and the children that come from them. Specifically this came from me thinking about one of my raven/jarra/dalmora aus. anyways, in beta sector, all three parents in a triad marriage are considered equally to be the parents of any children that result from the marriage, even if they aren't biologically related. so in this instance, if raven and dalmora have a child together, jarra would still legally be the child's mother just as much as dalmora is, and the child would therefore be in the tell clan. but because they wouldn't be a biological descendant of tellon blaze, they wouldn't be able to have the tell clan prefix. do the tell clan have any provisions for this kind of situation? this kind of situation would probably be rare so maybe they haven't had any reason to think of it yet. but i think one possible interesting idea would be that the child in question could have the Blaze clan prefix, while still being a member of the Tell clan, since they're sister clans.
i mean there's always the possibility that the child doesn't have a prefix at all, but we've seen how much discrimination the clanless face in beta sector (when drago heard lolia and lolmack's names for the first time he immediately dismissed them as being from a gutter clan specifically because of their names). i just don't see the tell clan being okay with their children facing that kind of discrimination for no reason, you know? i feel like it would breed a lot of resentment

junglequeenstaleeeea:
deity aid me but i'm so tired of earth rolling news talking about jarra tell morrath 24/7. believe it or not, there are millions of other people with novak-nadal syndrome that live on this planet too.
figures the only one that the damn exos would care about is the one who's basically a norm anyways 🙄
nextstephome:
okay look. i'm going to try and be gentle here because your bio says you're just 14 (which, yikes, do your proparents know you're out here putting so much identifying info on the internet? please please please for your own safety remove your settlement's name from your profile)
commander tell morrath is not even close to being "basically a norm".
you do realize that she had to go through a life-threatening surgery to be able to survive on other planets, right?
and you do know that if her surgically implanted web were ever malfunction or be irreparably damaged, she'd die, right?
that's not something that norms have to go through.
and not just that, even though she can travel to other planets now, that doesn't erase an entire childhood of growing up handicapped. it doesn't erase all the trauma and ridicule that she went through, same as you and me.
just because she ended up lucky enough to have a family that wants her doesn't erase the fact that she grew up feeling alone and unloved. it doesn't change the fact that some bigoted zeus sewer rat decided to throw skunk juice at her just for the way she was born.
the nuking exos who are prejudiced against us are still going to find things to hate about her, even if she CAN travel to other star systems now. because their hatred was never actually about that.
so stop doing their jobs for them by trying to tear her down.
at the end of the day, commander tell morrath has way more in common with us apes than she does with those exos, and that's never going to change.
#commander tell morrath #politics #guys please don't send hate to op they're just a child #op once again please remove the identifying info from your profile i'm being so for real here

Amber/Jarra swap AU? 👀👀👀 Very interesting...
That’s one of the older ones! It’s a bit of a disaster, since Jarra isn’t a true telepath and Amber doesn’t have Jarra’s memories or personality. I hadn’t thought about it too much, but now I think I might put the swap on a time limit so that things don’t go too badly wrong.
Here’s your snippet! (Some was already written down)
I could hear someone talking, which meant I was back out of the tank. I instinctively tended, ready for the crushing pain to start again, but it didn’t. “Welcome back, I hope,” an unfamiliar voice said. “Do you know me, Amber? What’s my name?”
I opened my eyes and looked down at myself. I was alive, and things didn’t hurt, but… was I still me? My arms and legs looked oddly small, and the man sitting on the chair next to me had called me Amber, not Jarra. I turned my head to look directly at him, and was confused to find my hair had grown past shoulder length. Nuke it, how long had I been in the tank?
“My name is Jarra, not Amber,” I corrected, “and I don’t know who you are. Do I have brain damage? Are you a doctor?”
The man’s face crumpled. He looked utterly devastated. “I… I’m afraid you might. What’s the last thing you remember?”
“I remember being put back in the tank,” I said.
“Tank? Like a fish tank?”
“No, like a regrowth tank. Aren’t you supposed to be a doctor?”
“I’m not actually a doctor,” the man answered. “I can call your personal doctor over though.”
“Personal doctor?”
The man stood up from the chair by my bedside and tapped at something that looked a bit like a lookup, but wasn’t. A moment later, a woman who looked a little older than thirty walked into the room. “Amber! You’re awake!”
“Megan… the imprint removal seems to have gone wrong somehow. Amber doesn’t remember me, and she says her name is Jarra.”
“I’m right here,” I interjected, “ and my name is Jarra.”
“You also asked if you have brain damage. Megan, can you do an exam to check?”
“Yes, but I’ll need Am—Jarra’s consent first.”
I looked suspiciously at them, but decided that this was probably my best chance of finding out what had happened to me. “Fine.”

How about Earth Girl Trilogy and Drago books and Never Love an Anchor by The Crane Wives for the musical ask game? (I’m going to send you so many asks by the way, please do not feel pressured to answer them immediately)
I love The Crane Wives!!
Reunited au! with Jarra and Jaxon. In some way, they find Jarra when she's really little, but Jaxon is so overcome by guilt so he cuts contact with the clan (like Riak did, he's still a member but he never talks to them) but he still loves Jarra and wants to learn about the Earth she'll grow up on, so he joins a pre-history course. He joins an excavation team and tries his best to be happy.
Jarra's grown up in the clan, her parents took her to the ark when she was little and she met Kian and Issette and spent her childhood sneaking into their Home and Next Step to hang out with them (she did in fact, lock Nurse Cass in the storage room).
She still has a hyper fixation with history and all of the things that happen in the prequel novellas happens, just with her parents and older sister desperately following her around trying to keep her safe. She's much less angry but still has rage for her friends.
Her parents don't try to keep the fact that Jaxon exists from her, all anyone knows about him though is that he left soon after Jarra was found. The clan assumes that he left to prove himself under Fidelis but Jarra just assumes he left because he was biased against people with Immune Syndrome.
Jarra is VERY famous because of the status of her clan, the fact that her cousin Drago, saved Hera (he survived because his wing leader grabbed him, he was much more injured and had to spend a LONG time away from everyone, see that how you will), and that she was the first Handicapped to be accepted into a Betan clan. So she decides to go to University Asgard instead of University Earth because she thinks she'll get less attention from norms than from other people with Immune Syndrome.
The crash happens, and Jaxon (who is using a fake last name but not first name) and her meet afterwords as members of some of the teams doing the excavation.
She likes him, but there's something odd about him. He's working as a fill-in for one of the Earth teams so she assumes he has Immune Syndrome and never questions him on it (misunderstandings yay) so she doesn't think he could possibly be her brother Jaxon.
Anyway she goes back to work, and doesn't really think of Jaxon besides exchanging a few messages until Alien Contact starts. He's a specialist in Pre-history, and she thinks of him when thinking of someone to be a civilian advisor, except when they look him up, there's noone under that name so Jarra describes him and Drago recognizes the description of his brother by choice and goes to hunt him down.
There's a confrontation, and Jaxon tries to leave, but is drafted into alien contact anyway and oop now they gotta work together. Jarra is confused because she thought he hated Handicapped people and Jaxon is confused because Jarra should hate him, fluffy and angry confrontations go!
(Ty! I love getting sent asks so this makes me happy)
