Collection of Flowers and Fruits Painted after Nature
By the mid-17th century, there was a surge of interest in beautiful, exotic plants and formal royal gardens. At Fountainebleau and the Louvre, the gardens were filled with flowers from far-away places, such as the Near East, India, the East and West Indies, and South America. In 1735 Carl Linnaeus (1707-1778) invented the first scientific classification system for 7,700 plants. As a result, accuracy as well as artistic skill were required for the numerous portfolios of botanical prints popular with gardeners and those involved with the decorative arts. In these lavish productions, some of the color is printed but the remainder is added with watercolor, giving the illusion of transparency, luminosity, and the delicacy characteristic of flowers. Stipple was a technique developed in England from the 1760s. A point is used to build up a mass of flicks and dots to create a wide range of tones. (1805)

flower symbolism in alien stage
So, we have two confirmed flowers mentioned in the seriesâClematis from Round 1 and Edelweiss from Round 2âand the red flowers from the Anakt Garden. I have a few options for what those could be, so Iâll go over each option at the end.Â
Of course, Clematis is the most obvious flower reference. Hereâs what they look like if youâre unfamiliar. Itâs a beautiful flower, available in pink and purple varieties, colors which you can find in both of their color palettes.Â
They represent transformation and wisdom, the pursuit of knowledge, determination and spirituality. Very compatible with the themes of the series, and specifically of Mizi and Suaâs love for each other. They deify each other and transform each other, through meeting and knowing each other. Suaâs knowledge of their world and Miziâs lack of it is what leads to her death and to Miziâs subsequent transformation.
Clematis grow on vines, constantly racing up towards the sun. Suaâs sacrifice, I think, is what will allow Mizi to finally reach it.
Itâs really lovely and terrible. A perfect fit for them.Â
Now Edelweiss! Itâs a very tough plant, but also very short-lived, and nearly impossible to get your hands on, as theyâre native to the lonely peaks of the Alps.Â
Itâs representative of devotion, nobility, and purity, which is FASCINATING to me. There are many more romantic flowers out there, even ones with meanings specifically related to unrequited love, but Edelweiss specifically so perfectly encapsulates why I think Till likes Mizi.Â
He sees her as something pure, untouched by the nightmare of their lives. Sheâs kinder than the others. Naive, still believing in good things like homes and friends and love.Â
Even when he hallucinates her, he imagines her as a child, big-eyed and smilingâher purest form. He hates their capture. Hates living, fights and fights and fights. I think he clings to her as a symbol more than a girl by the point of the Alien Stage, devoting everything to this ideal of her, continuing to sing his confession at her even while sheâs crumbled into a ball of grief. That version of her may not even really be the being heâs singing to.Â
He clearly has her on a pedestal in his mind. When he loses that idol, both watches his friend lose her innocence and then his symbol of purity go apeshit and beat the hell out of their competitor, he loses everything. By the time we see him in Round 6 heâs been completely broken down by the system, never fully developing the will to live for himself, only for his Edelweiss.Â
As for the red flowersâŠ
They have five petals, with a black center. Honestly, given that one of Miziâs likes is âartificial Anakt flowers,â which are presumably these, they're probably not intended to be a specific type of real-world flower. But Iâm going to play in the sand here anyway!
Poppies have four or six petals, but they do have the dark core. Red ones specifically symbolize death and remembrance, which is⊠obviously fitting the themes of the series. But, the red flowers are used mostly to depict their childhoods, specifically their playful childhood love rather than their deaths. I think some of the other options are more fitting.
Geraniums are commonly red and have five petals, but no dark inside. They symbolize deceit and preference, with the red variety further meaning stupidity and consolation. Yowza!!!Â
Preference is clearly applicableâMizi and Sua choose each other to give their flower crowns to, Till makes his flower crown for Mizi. It seems like a ritual among the kids that they give their flower crowns to someone they like.
Stupidity could be for Till not noticing Miziâs clear mutual interest in someone else, or for Ivan, either not realizing that the flower crown he stepped on was Tillâs or thinking it would get Tillâs attention in any other way than Till jumping him LMAO.
As for deceit or consolation⊠I feel like these donât quite fit? Deceit isnât present in the scenes with the red flowers, though maybe in Sua and Ivanâs decisions to sacrifice themselves? Consolation is unfortunately not really present in the series at all. Much to all of our collective pain and suffering.
So, petunias are my favorite option for the red flowers. Theyâre five-petaled and have the dark center, even if they're not as similar as poppies... just hear me out!!!
They represent two conflicting ideasâanger and resentment, and âbeing with you is soothing.â I think this fits all three of the pairs theyâre shown in relation to. Tillâs anger with Ivan in their childhoods for ruining his flower crown is pretty clear, his anger with him in general, even with the world.
Then Mizi and Suaâs reciprocated loveâof course, being with each other is soothing, and Till finds Mizi soothing as well, as we covered in their section.Â
I love the double meaning. I think the meanings flip as they age, as well. Mizi resents Sua for leaving her, and Till only realizes once Ivanâs gone that he did, in some way, appreciate his presence.Â
Anyway I just had to get this out of my system because I have so many Thoughts about this series. Also fun tidbit: Till is said to specialize in floral art. Much to think about...

I'm going a little insane over the symbolism in ROUND 3 of Alien Stage, so here's a (not-so) little visual analysis.
When I first watched this video, I was ecstatic, and not just because Ivan is my favorite. But I was also ecstatic to see once again the flowers that have been showing up very subtly throughout the series.
First, in the series theme, we see Till holding small red flowers behind his back. Then in ROUND 2, we see Till clutch them again, and then Till watch as Sua places a crown of red flowers upon Mizi's head. And then in ROUND 3, we see the flower crown itself, up close.
From what I can tell, these are either some kind of poppy, or maybe specifically poppy anemones/Anemone coronaria. I can't find any academic analysis for a common meaning, although the ever-unreliable flower meaning blogosphere associates them largely with forsaken love. But it doesn't really matter what the cultural meaning is, so much as the textual meaning.
Ivan's eyes are very clearly shown to be a visual inverse of these flowers. His eyes are black, deep black, and when his face is neutral we see no other color but black. But when he's experiencing intense emotion, we see that his irises are actually red!
This happens first in the introduction, when he gazes at the stars (another heavily repeated piece of symbolism).
As he falls backwards, and the shadow of his former owner passes over him, his eyes become black once again, and remain black until he witnesses Till standing up against the creature with Mizi.
His iris swells red. Shooting stars flash across the sky, and in his eyes. As we cut back to his song in the present, his irises are still red. Stars shoot behind him now as he sings.
A flashback again, to Till. This time, the sky is warm, aflame; the glittering stars replaced by falling fire. Till's irises are also red now. But once Till turns back (presumably to go look for Mizi), his eyes return to their green color, and Ivan's become pure black once more.
Except in this last shot. This last shot, where, if you look closely, even beneath the shadows, you can see that his irises are once again inflamed with red.
The previous two songs mention flowers by name; clematis in ROUND 1, and edelweiss in ROUND 2. So I thought it strange that no flower appears within the lyrics of Ivan's song. Then I realized; a flower does appear in the lyrics, just not in the way you would expect!
At the end of this story There is only a cold spot stained with blood, and Such black, black sorrow
The flowers are red; stained with blood. They have a white ring in the middle; a cold spot. And their center is black; black sorrow. The same is true of Ivan's eyes; they reflect the coldness of space, except for the very center, a spot stained with blood, surrounded by black sorrow.
I wonder if we'll continue to see the flowers throughout the series, as they interconnect the relationships of Sua and Mizi, and Till and Ivan. Sua gives Mizi a flower crown as representative of her love. Till chases down and catches the flower crown as representative of his love for Mizi. And Ivan watches from afar, desire growing, as flowers bloom within his own eyes.
I've noticed also the repetition of red "eyes" throughout the series so far. First on the collars, which go from a bright green to red when locked. Then in the series theme, we see the red eyes of the soldiers. In ROUND 2, we see red lights around the stage, as well as in the security cameras in Till's room. Finally, in ROUND 3, we see red "eyes" several more times. Beyond Ivan, which I have already discussed, we see that his former master has red eyes. And, most importantly, we see them repeated throughout Ivan's flashback in which he fell in love with Till, and tried to escape with him.
For Ivan, red represents his desire, and his love. But within Alien Stage, red is also representative of control and authority. Ivan loves Till, yes. But he also wants to control him, and to monopolize his affections. Which is why I am so, so thoroughly excited to see what a Till vs. Ivan round will look like in the future.

Another fun aspect of only having 7 miraculous is not only can you tie it to colors, but also gemstones
Ladybug/Red - Ruby
Firefly/Orange - Jasper
Bee/Yellow - Topaz
Grasshopper/Green - Emerald
Dragonfly/Blue - Sapphire
Mantis/Indigo - Tanzanite
Butterfly/Purple - Amethyst
Also, for Fun:
Spider - Onyx or Obsidian
Scorpion - Pearl or Diamond
Gemstones did come to mind, but I was also uncertain as there's a lot of gemstones out there to pick from, and they can come in various colors. Like sapphire, which is usually known to be blue, can also come in green, yellow, and orange.
I'm also not too familiar with gemstones. But flowers I am more familiar with, though not on the same level as a friend of mine, but looked more into it. Which, these are my initial pick if dabbling into flowers:
Ladybug/Red - Rose (chosen as it's a symbol of romantic love like ladybugs, but comes with thorns, working off ladybugs being efficient hunters)
Firefly/Orange - Poppy (poppies symbolize remembrance, sleep, and death; fireflies often tied to spirits of the dead)
Bee/Yellow - has a good few possible options
Begonia (represents good communication, and bees are tied to communicating and delivering messages; also the pun potential)
Daffodil (rebirth and new beginnings, the coming of spring and end of winter)
Goldenrod (fortune, growth, adventure, and encouragement)
Marigold (positivity, creativity, passion, prosperity)
Grasshopper/Green - Daylily (energy, joy, moving past sorrow, like a grasshopper taking a leap of faith, moving forward; can also work off the more negative association to grasshoppers)
Dragonfly/Blue - Gladiolus (struggle, strength, victory, and pride; additionally, dragonflies are kinda shaped like a sword)
Mantis/Indigo - Clematis (ingenuity, cleverness, mental beauty; works off Mantis tied to divination, perception, wisdom, and guidance)
Butterfly/Purple - Lavender (purity, silence, devotion, grace, serenity, calmness, elegance, royalty, spirituality; butterflies represent the soul, and are known for the silence and elegance)
Spider/Black - Belladonna (witchcraft, beauty, death, tied to one of the Three Fates, specifically the one that snipped the lifeline; works off Spider being dangerous)
Scorpion/White - Oleander (vigilance, caution, mindful of danger; some tie scorpions to guardianship, but over all, are a symbol of death, fear, and desire)
