Pope sighed deeply as he stared out at the water, feeling utterly defeated. The waves below the dock crashed into the support beams while he hugged his knees to his chest. Once he reached Pope, JJ nudged his side with the toe of his boot. “Yo. Why you sittin’ out here alone?” Of course it was JJ. It was always JJ, in every way. Pope shrugged, not meeting his friend's eyes. “Nothing. Just...stuff at school.”

JJ sat down beside him, eyes focusing on Pope’s mouth. “Assholes giving you trouble again? What'd they say this time?” When Pope didn't answer, JJ nudged him playfully. “Did you die on me?” He was met with a heavy sigh as Pope reluctantly looked at him.

“Nothing, JJ. They just called me gay, like the worst thing on earth to be would be being gay.” Pope didn’t mention the more vile things said. JJ shifted not knowing exactly how to comfort Pope without making a joke. Expecting a different answer, JJ prompted him lightheartedly, “Well? Are you?”

Pope glanced at JJ, his heart in his throat. There was something in JJ's eyes, or lack thereof. He wasn’t judging by any means. Slowly, Pope nodded. JJ’s eyebrows slowly climbed his face and he looked out at the water before leaning back on his hands, shoulder touching Pope’s.

“You know they don’t know shit right?” JJ was the first to break the silence as always. “They’re just dickheads,” he said matter-of-factly. “They don't understand.” Pope wasn’t sure if he had read too deep or if he was hitting the mark when he looked at JJ in surprise.

His tone gave Pope courage. Their eyes met again, and this time Pope thought he saw something more in JJ's gaze. Affection. Longing. Suddenly every casual touch and private moment they’d shared took on a new light.

Pope’s mind raced as he took it in. JJ couldn’t like boys. Could he? He studied the relaxed look on JJ’s face as if he knew what he was silently telling Pope. It was all the words he couldn’t find a way to say out loud. ‘It’s okay. You’re okay. I love you too.’

It was everything Pope had secretly dreamed of and dared not hope for. He licked his lips nervously. “JJ...” JJ’s throat bobbed, setting sun basking him in its rays. “Yeah?” He started almost shakily. Pope searched his eyes again, pinky sliding over JJ’s. All he needed was when JJ more confidently hooked their fingers together. “Yeah.” Pope whispered, not needing to say anything further.

He wasn’t as afraid anymore, but his confession could wait another day. For now he wanted to sit here where he considered it to be the prettiest place on earth with his favorite person.
