Hey, I lied. Shirabe Meshi chapter 37's first half dropped yesterday and I've been kinda busy but I think I can type this thing up a bit faster than expected, so let's see how this goes

On the morning of December 28, Chris wakes up to Hibiki repeatedly ringing her doorbell yelling her name. She opens the door.

"Hey idiot, it's early, you're botherin' the neighbors..."

"Let's go on a date!"

...So poor Chris is a confused, blushing mess now. Hibiki pushes her back into her apartment telling her to get dressed and meanwhile Chris is shouting back "Who even said I was goin'?!"

So karaoke is first

"Don't make me sing so suddenly!" while Synchrogazer is the chosen song

...So this is a reference to when people first heard Synchrogazer and some misheard the line "kimi ni utau yo" (I sing to you) as "kyuu ni utau yo" (I sing suddenly) and well...it fit how the characters start singing during fights so it stuck as a sort of joke in the Japanese fandom

They end up totally worn out after doing that for three hours so they leave to do other stuff like...Hibiki trying to win a stuffed rabbit from a crane machine

Or going to a cafe. Or getting distracted by cats in the park.

After all that, Hibiki just leaves, making Chris wonder if she even remembers what day it is.

Flashback to a previous day, the others are discussing their plan to surprise Chris. Hibiki, Tsubasa, and Miku are supposed to distract her while Shirabe and Kirika sneak into her apartment and get things ready.

Unfortunately Maria can't make it because she's got her hands full investigating an organization with ties to remnants of the Illuminati.

Back to the present, Tsubasa rides up on her motorcycle just as Chris decides to go home.

"Yukine, go out with me"

"Huh, ah, g-go...Go ou--?! Wh--..wha...?!"

So poor Chris is a confused, blushing me--okay fine, I already said that.

The very next panel we see Tsubasa and Chris training under a waterfall because Tsubasa claims she's become rusty lately. Tsubasa mentions holding her hand if she starts feeling weak and Chris...falls over into the water

Back at Chris' apartment, Kirika and Shirabe made it in and have started preparing. There are presents and decorations, Hibiki made pizza while Tsubasa made sushi (references to previous chapters), so now they have to bake the cake

Which they do because that's the recipe for this chapter and that's where I'm saving time--Not explaining the several pages of how to bake a cake

So back to Chris. She wakes up on Miku's lap confused about what happened.

Miku tells her how Tsubasa came back from training with her completely exhausted, but that she left to do a TV interview and Chris comments that she's cold-hearted

Of course, that wasn't true and Tsubasa and Hibiki are both hiding in the bushes nearby so Tsubasa heard what she said and gets offended and Hibiki has to tell her to keep hiding

...and yeah, first half ends around there.

What a wonderful experience writing for the @noragamitarotzine! Check out everyone's work there, and my piece below the cut!

It could have gone like this:

Cicadas hum in sunset-soaked trees, the smell of asphalt at odds with the fresh-cut grass. You sit next to a girl on the swingset, puffs of dust erupting each time you skid to a stop. You’re eating a snack that you probably swindled from some poor human, smears of food around the corner of your mouth until you look at your reflection and gasp at the audacity of no one telling you that you had something on your face.

(Once broken, can anything truly be put back together?)

The signal is always three flicks of her light. You knock on the window late at night, your grin wide and full of more stories to tell while you float around a room that must look so mundane compared to Heaven. But no, in this world, it would be interesting—your eye would catch on an award hung on the walls, or on a family photo on the desk, and you would get that hungry little look in your eyes, the one that says you must know in great detail everything there is to know about whatever prompted it. And in this world, you’d get more than an exasperated answer.

(What jokes would you have shared today?)

Or perhaps it went like this:

You pester Yukine on the way to school, buying a plushie and stickers because you know he gets so excited to get a “good job!” when there’s a sticker. You say annoying things and are so pleased when no one leaves, proud that you have friends despite what Father told you. 

Maybe you’d get bored and visit the hospital, leaving advertisements all over the bulletin board. You’d grin at all the work you’ll be able to do with your hafuri and all the time you’ll be able to spend outside of bedrooms, looking in.

The floors are quiet. Monitors beep and the hum of fluorescent lighting is loud in the one unoccupied room you find. You think about all the trouble you’ll cause later and how you’ll pass it off on Daikoku or Kofuku, and wonder if you can hide a beer long enough to finish it before Yukine notices.

You linger by the window, hips and shoulders that glorious degree of perpendicular, lips in line with the sun. You smile—why? Do you still have faith in tomorrow? Is loss so far away?

Gone is the high school graduation party in Kofuku’s home, flushed from too much to drink and wondering about the heat where our shoulders touch; gone are the mornings you drag us to your favorite restaurant just to have us try everything on the menu and pretend like you don’t care about our opinions; gone are the nights you hover in the tree, both of us pretending you’re not there as you watch another human night hit the bottom of the hourglass.

(Was there ever a world in which your blood didn’t dry, blasphemous, beneath my nails?)

Instead of sunbeams, we get sirens. And that’s the worst of it; we’re trapped in every shard of glass and frantic phone call from loved ones who just want to know their person is safe, and we will never get back to those lazy afternoons or bandaged hands or shining, precious almosts. The ground hasn’t fallen away; it sits heavy and aching with no way out. 

I hold the could-have-beens tight to my chest while I leap for your throat. I tuck each and every plan for our future into bed and watch them burn away as my blight eats your flesh. Maybe if you grant this wish, this final, desperate wish, something can be saved. I sink my teeth into your shoulder and ignore the screams and moans from the hospital I’ll no longer grow up to work at.

Your blood coats my tongue and you look at me like it doesn’t matter, like nothing matters except us going home together, so I hand you the weight of tomorrow and wait for Sekki to join me to you forever.

Do you think we’ll be happy, in this unimagined world?

I mentioned this in my other post, but I really loved getting to know more about Fujisaki's relationship with Father and how exactly it worked. Though it's definitely for the better he doesn't remember the details.

Also I love how Hiyori was like "he's really not my type why did we associate with each other" lmao

Aftermath Blade x gn reader

Summary: after a mission goes horribly wrong you run to the only person you believe can comfort you. CW: cursing, violence, ptsd, blood, fluff, blade is gentle, ps he's only doing this bc it's you, hurt with comfort, happy ending. AN: I can't get this man out of my head so here's a short but sweet oneshot. I head canon that he's a mix of tsundere and yandere so that is totally reflecting in my writing.

As a trailblazer, you had encountered many monstrous beings before. However, this particular encounter felt different. The assignment was initially planned to be a simple one, but upon your arrival, the level of the curse suddenly transfigured to a huge fucking problem.

The creature's physical appearance was almost human-like, except for its nearly translucent skin and intricate armor adorning its body. Its muscular build was cloaked in an aura of immense power, making any attempt to replicate it seem futile. The sheer energy emanating from the beast was so intense that you found yourself trembling on your knees as you tried to stand firm. You completely forgot about the newbie who had tagged along with you. 

Neither of you were prepared for this at fucking all.

It blitzed towards you with insane force, leaving you with scarcely any time to protect yourself before being hurled through three solid walls. The intense agony rippled through every fiber of your being, almost rendering you immobile in its wake. It was at this moment, right before its fist went through your skull, your temporary teammate sprang into action, jumping in to save your life. 

You could make out the sounds of a blood curdling scream, bones breaking, and a powerful technique being released. It all felt miles away yet deafening at the same time. As your body was writhing in pain, you could feel your adrenaline surging, propelling you into action. Finally, with a sudden burst of energy, you managed to strike the final and fatal blow. But alas, it was too little too late to protect the life of Yukine...

The car ride back home began with a heavy silence. There was no conversation to be had, no words exchanged between the driver and yourself. Maybe the reason for the lack of communication was the fact that your throat was sore from crying or screaming, but in reality, it was just you. Your mind was in turmoil, unable to comprehend or articulate anything. The only thing it could focus on was replaying the events from earlier, over and over again. You felt a sense of terror grip you like never before - it was a fear so real and so palpable that it consumed your thoughts entirely, leaving little room for anything else.

Blade

Blade, patiently waiting for your return at home. Would he scoff at your perceived weaknesses or worse, abandon you entirely for your poor actions? You couldn’t help but painstakingly wonder what his reaction will be to the news that you failed to save someone's life today. In failing to do your job, to be strong, you let down not only yourself, but the one you cherished deeply. As a trailblazer, you know all too well how unforgiving this world can be, especially towards those who falter in their duties. But how would Blade treat your failures…

The car came to a screeching halt as you arrived at his home, your home. “Miss, I really recommend you go and see a doctor…” His plea fell on deaf ears as you stepped out of the car. You kept your head low as you reached the doorstep… What were you going to do when he opened it? 

You knocked once, twice, three times before your hand fell limp at your side. The sounds of his shoes pattering against the floor caught your attention. Each heavy and calculating step made your heart jump. The creaking sound of the door being opened, the light illuminating from the entrance, and the confused look on his face when he gazed at you sent you into a frenzy. 

“What the hell happened?” Tears began to pour from your eyes, you stumbled forward reaching for any type of solace. “I-I-m sorry” you hiccupped through sobs as you profusely apologized for how badly this assignment went. You practically fell into his arms, the warmth radiating off of his body enveloping you. One of his large hands reached up to run his fingers through your disheveled hair. 

“It’s alright, I’m gonna get you fixed up.” His face remained frozen in an unbothered expression; lips stuck in a thin line. If only you could see the shock and hurt in his eyes you would know he cared. Comforting another person was not his forte. Nor was he very good at taking care of another life besides his own… But he knew what it was like to fail, to lose, and to believe there was no coming back from it. Blade did what he assumed any person would do, he took care of you. 

He lifted you from the floor with ease, carrying you bridal style to your destination. The restroom, you desperately needed a bath. You couldn’t process him delicately undressing you or eyes only temporarily lingering on the delicate parts. You could hear the water running and his feet shuffling but the noise in your mind blurred it all. How many times must you relive it before you could have peace?

Blade gently washed the dried blood from your hair. His long fingers running through the knots and lathering them with soap. His moves were far more delicate when he scrubbed the blood from the rest of you, carefully avoiding intimate parts. The water was quickly turning a dark brown, but the smell was graciously covered by jasmine scented body wash. Throughout the entire bath you did not look at him, you did not move. You were still frozen in time, still stuck in that place. 

He adorned your body in the softest silk robe you had ever felt… Definitely out of both of your pay grades. Blade sat you on the edge of the toilet, getting on his knees so he could do his work. It’s important to note he never gets on his knees. He meticulously searched your skin for any wounds, glancing up at you to search for any sign of discomfort. 

He wasn’t a natural healer by nature, but he had his fair share of injuries. Any cut that remained was rubbed with medicinal lotion and wrapped so it wouldn’t get infected. He took his time with each injury, ensuring your comfort above all. It was odd, in all the time he’s known you there was never a situation where you were this quiet. And yet, it was the most comfortable silence of his life. 

There was no way in hell you were going to be able to eat tonight. He knew that the sight of anything edible would probably cause you to empty the rest of your stomach contents on his floor. He opted to immediately take you to bed and pray a good night's rest would fix you… Though he doubted you would be capable of sleeping after that. 

It was surprising, the way he gently laid you down and tucked you in. You were enjoying every second of the attention though you didn’t show it. His presence was fighting against your thoughts and forcing them away. You had a single moment of clarity when he turned to leave. 

“Stay…”

“Please.”

You grasped his wrist, pleading with your eyes. Blade appeared far more shocked than you imagined. This was the most expressive face he’s had since you met. He took a moment to process, to ponder, before he made his choice. “Move over.” 

He slid under the covers next to you, pulling your arms so they wrapped around him, and you were firmly pressed under his chin. His heartbeat, his breath, his warmth, everything about him was lulling you into a sense of ease. You raised your head to admire him just once, carefully gazing at every detail and embedding it into your brain permanently. 

His lips curved slightly, in an almost unnoticeable smirk. Then the other most unexpected thing happened that day… Blade gently pressed a kiss to your temple. His soft lips blessing you with their touch. “You’ll be okay, I got you.”

I was just going through my photos and found pictures of my old bettas that I've had throughout my time in this hobby. I'm currently bettaless and missing having one of these little guys in my life.

This is Yukine. He was a gentle and calm fish and liked to follow my finger. He was with me for nearly two years, but he developed a case of fin rot that he just couldn't shake off even though I was treating it with salt and meds. Poor lad.

This is Raine. The only female I've ever owned. It's funny. I've heard that females were supposed to be more docile compared to the males. But she was the spunkiest betta I've ever owned. No Amano shrimp was safe, and the snails were heavily policed. Even so, she loved people and would let me pet her. Remembering her makes me want another female~ She developed a tumor on her side. It didn't seem to bother her at all. Then, one morning, she was just gone.

Here's Prince. Another chill man. He had that personality to him. Like a chill old man. Nothing bothered him really besides water changes. Those always made him grumpy lol He lived to be close to 3 years old. He was only a few months off! He developed fin rot from sitting around because of his heavy tail. In his old age, his immune system wasn't as strong as it used to be, so the infection really took hold.

Ah, Fenris. I wish I could have gotten to know him more. Unfortunately, he never wanted to eat anything I offered him. Something must have been wrong when I bought him because he declined rapidly in the first week I had him. Salt and meds and water changes didn't seem to work, and dropsy developed...

This is Lucius, and Lucius wanted to be free. He was always zooming around the tank for the month I had him. He was nearly impossible to film or photograph. He got so zoomy that he jumped out of his tank while I was away eating dinner, and when I returned... well, Lucius was free. Free from the confines of his mortal flesh.

This dude here is Dimitri. He is my longest lived betta. He passed away just after his third birthday. In his younger days, he enjoyed jumping to take bloodworms off of my fingertip! That was really fun. He used to get so excited and start jumping before my finger was even close enough to reach! As he aged though, his tail really began to tire him out and weigh him down. So he just chilled in the plants a lot.

My boy, Caius. He passed only recently after having him for nearly a year. He developed bloat and despite an Epsom salt bath, he didnt make it. He was a fun little guy. Always greeting me from his tank on my computer desk. He had only recently started to flare at me, but only when I showed him my fingernails. Those are icky. Gross.

I really miss these silly fish with their wide array of personalities. I'm really hoping to get a betta next month, maybe two, because I have two empty tanks waiting for one. I'm hoping for a specific kind for one of my tanks. So we shall see~

Noragami Final Chapter Thoughts

You know what? I'm used to it.

I'm used to have exceptionally well-written manga get cut off or deadline-d to finish at certain point of time (usually by the publisher's order) when the authors still have so, so, SO much more left to give, so in the end they have no choice but to rush the final chapter.

Shingeki no Kyojin, Promised Neverland, Nisekoi, other mangas I forgot to name. And this manga. For such a long-running series with deep lore, they all could use a special volume (200+ pages) as an epilogue, not a 45-pages speedrun of everyone's everafter. I wish more series could follow Mob Psycho's example. Some say Mob Pycho Season 3 is too long, it needs to be more compact etc, but I don't think so at all. I think it's perfect the way it is -- it's a fulfilling send-off for all the characters we love so much. I wish more series would get their ending like that, but what can I say about Japanese manga industry.

And there's also Adachitoka's health to consider too. In which case, I'd say they did their best, and I'm really thankful for them for being able to deliver this series safely.

In short, I already expected this chapter to be a speedrun. Because of that, my experience when I read this chapter is better than I expected.

Maybe because I've learned my lessons for not making theory too much, so I don't have certain expectations that'd cloud my judgement.

With no deep thoughts when reading, let's go dive in.

I guess this is his punishment for wrecking havoc in the human world and disturbing the Heaven? But like, he was clearly under the influence of trashdad?? He's not really at fault?? Is this author's message that we shouldn't justify his action just because we understood his reasons?? But still. That's too cruel for doing it for your own main character.

I know shinkis that were left behind by their master would retain their name after the master's death, but still. To think Izanami's power is still working on Yukine after the Kotonoha is destroyed. This is tragedy.

Damn, she really forgot everything. This is for the best though, she already died once when she got too close with the far shore; I'm already prepared for this much. Maybe Yato had finally severed her ties with him and that (along with the cpr) is what allowed Hiyori to return.

Wdym "intense cpr," it's more than intense. It's hella long too. Nobody could perform intense cpr for hours nonstop, unless that person is non-human.

Since Yukine is infected by GGS and always in constant nightmare, I'd like to believe Kazuma is experiencing the same thing; in order to separate him from the rest of the clan, now Kazuma sleeps with Bishamon every night. Lucky bastard.

That is so touching of Yato for comforting his sobbing child every night, but I wish we got a glimpse of his reminisce with his now-gone Father.

Oh wooww the dude finally stopped playing around. I thought he didn't have the guts to cut Hiyori's ties, turns out he really cut itt. No wonder Hiyori forgot about him for 10 years.

(Though I don't think she forgot completely either. Yato might not be in her head anymore, but he's still in her heart)

(or maybe not. I guess their fate really IS intertwined, knowing their first meeting)

I kinda wish Hiyori would remember Yato much later, like, in her 40s when she already has kids on her own, but hey, the sooner she remembers him, the longer he'd stay on this Earth so I'd still consider it a win!

Tbh, a part of me don't want her to get involved with far shore like she did in the past, but a part of me also wants her to snuggle between Yato and Yukine's arms after her work hours end. Dilemma.

Now I need Hiyori's journey to become one hell of a rich doctor so she could build a proper shrine for Yato so she and her family could pray together every morning, because she claimed it's Yatogami who saved her life that day. She'd make dinner for Yato and Yukine and eat with them every evening while her family acknowledge it as her night-praying-time. She'd tell her family, her future husband, and her future children about the legend of Yato (she'd exaggerate it a lot) and the next thing she knows, Yato have already has a devoted followers. Oh, and she'd often visited Bisha's shrine, Kofuku's, Ebisu's, all gods associated with Yato.

That's it folks. I rarely do my thoughts about Noragami, but I do read it religiously regularly each month. This manga has already become my comfort manga no matter how angsty it is, so it's gonna be hard to part with it, after all this time. Maybe for next month I'm gonna restart from chapter 1, one chapter per month.

I do have to say though, usually when I read a series with unsatisfactory ending, it leaves a bad taste in mouth. Somehow this chapter don't feel like that at all. I don't know why. I still look at this chapter and all the previous ones with fondness.

I wanna dream that 1-2 years from now, Adachitoka would release a 200-pages of Noragami epilogue -- which I know it's impossible, but hey, let the girl dream. I'm also looking forward for the extra komas, if there's any.

he got a terrible life and death, bad luck seems like unable to stop coming to him. once he became a shinki, (un)fortunately, it's a poor god who bestowed him a name. he got a rough life debuting as shinki. but then he realized he did wrong, apologized to yato and hiyori, and promised to be a better shinki for yato. he didn't stop that way. he really does what he promises, he works hard, assists kofuku and daikoku, studies with hiyori, buys his own clothes, practices spells and incantations with kazuma, treats yato better, comes every time he calls him, yet shit keeps happening to him. yato is a pain in the ass. yukine just wants to know!!! please just TALK to him. but the world keeps leaving him out, yato never really communicates clearly with him, he is always left hanging, wandering and wondering alone. i can't really blame him, i can understand how he feels abandoned, betrayed, discriminated, and confused. he promised yato to always guide him, to always prevent him to kill humans, to always remind him his goal as a god of happiness. he was told that father is yato's lifeline, but the other day he found out that yato wants to kill father. what should he do???? aaaaaaa poor yukine. he always takes the pain, the realization, the redemption, the recovery, and the regret all by himself :((

and the latest chapter (104.2) he finally acknowledges that he is angry at his father, yato, and himself, that he wants to break free from those hatred and fix things up, but nobody understands him (and imagine you being yukine and finding out that all this time yato is leaving with kazuma as his shinki).

he wants to live, to love, to be loved. he realizes he did wrong. he apologizes. now he sees the world is once again crumbling in front of his eyes. he turned himself into a wolf ayakashi. he bears those all by himself....... how is the world so cruel? :((

i know people need time and their own to understand and reconcile with their own selves, their past, their problems, like, whatever people do to you or help you do something, you can never fix things if you don't feel and do it yourself, but yukine....... darling you deserve better!!! i'm begging, please adachitoka, make a beautiful ending with my baby yukine (and of course with yatori too), i would never forgive you if you do them otherwise.

Alright lets talk about THAT scene

Honestly I'm still processing all of it and I don't even know if this is even gonna be coherent or more like

So it's still very much up in the air as to whether that was really Hiyori or not because of the whole illusion thing that Father has going on in this domain but I'm going to assume this is actually her. It just seems kinda weird for Adachitoka to pull that and then go 'Haha SIKE! Jk!' in the next update. Like, if you're gonna pull a scene like that- you gotta commit to the bit ya know?

So let's assume it's all real. Cord snapped. Kapow. She's dead. Now what? God I wish I fucking knew because Adachitoka LOVE to throw curve balls at us so no matter what we predict it'll probably be wrong 🙃

But I think this might have something to do with it.

Kofuku was the one to originally tie the plaques together (uh oh) but then Ookunushi was the one to place them back and bless them with happiness. So you've got a disaster god dooming them but a god of fortune blessing them. Those poor plaques are so confused lol. But either way, Yato and Hiyori are bonded for life and that's an already pretty strong bond they've got. They're two idiots in love and call it silly and cliché but perhaps it's that bond that will save them.

Hiyori is a special case. She's a half-Ayakashi with ties to both the Near Shore and the Far-Shore and we have no idea what happens to someone like that when they die. Do they lose their memories? Will she forget Yato, Yukine, and everyone else from the Far Shore? Will she forget her name? Again, a tricky one but since she treads the lines between the two worlds and her soulmate is a god, maybe not. It could be possible that she retains all those Far Shore memories and forgets a lot of the Near. She remembers her name but can't recall her parents or friends faces.

(That then brings up the huge elephant in the room of what other shinki will think of that and then start to ponder their own deaths leading to the GGS (the likes of Daikoku, Bishamon and Ebisu's shinki etc) but let's just put that to one side for a minute. I can only have one panic at a time)

I think one thing is for certain at this point though. Noragami won't exactly have a happy ending. Either Hiyori somehow lives and Yato is forced to cut her ties and she forgets everything or she dies and permanently joins the Far Shore, leaving her life, ambitions, friends and family behind. And yeah, neither of those are good. But it looks like they're the only options. Now shoot me for this but I seem to lean towards the latter. I really hate endings where someone forgets the entire journey they just went on and it ends up in a sort of 'it was all a dream' ending. They just make me angry lol. Person has this amazing story and adventure and it ends with a literal I forgor meme? Lame. It's more impactful if both parties suffer 😈 (Why I always get more emotional watching the S2 finale of Doctor Who than the S4 finale. I hate that Donna had to forget everything to save her. But that's a completely different kettle of fish).

I went on a tangent there oops. ANYWAY. If we go down the route that Hiyori is dead then it seems like only two things can happen; she'll become a shinki or she'll be deified. She can't be dead dead I refuse to believe that 😤 Not only because she's my favourite character but I really can't see Adachitoka killing her off for good.

Now call me a hopeless romantic (and my Yatori brain going ding ding ding) but the immediate answer that came to mind when I saw this passage at the end of the chapter is love. Perhaps it'll be Hiyori's love for Yato (and Yukine of course) that will be the Deus ex machina that will ensure that she can come back and that she comes back with her memories in tact, maybe even bypassing the GGS. With that, she may be the secret weapon to destroying Father (did Ebisu and Take even destroy the shrine? Honestly can't remember). Whether that means Yato will name her and the three of them will completely whoop his ass or something else entirely, but I think that post-death Hiyori will be the final piece needed to end Trash Dad and the crisis on earth.

Horrific as it is, It would be fitting for her character to make that sacrifice. She's always been brave and selfless and if she knew that in order to save everyone she loves on earth and the rest of the population by fighting by Yato's side, even if that meant that she had to die, she'd do it.

Yes this isn't the perfect ending but there is no perfect ending. Hiyori has been doomed ever since she jumped in front of that bus.

Volume 3 contains Yukine's ablution, which is one of my favourite early story arcs!

There were threads for this planted in vol2, so we know that Yukine's poor behaviours are affecting Yato. It's becoming a problem as Yukine's acting out is not only worsening Yato's health, but making it VERY difficult for the two of them to work together when they need to.

He is stubbornly prideful of Yukine, despite them not getting along and seemingly not able to understand each other. Though, as we know, Gods share a body and mind with their Shinki, so Yato definitely does understand Yukine - a lot more intimately than the teen seems to realise.

This is why I find these events so interesting... Yato could've punished Yukine, or been more forceful in making him understand what he's inflicting on his master, but Yato allowed Yukine to be a little shit in order to understand himself better.

Yato allowed Yukine to act out so much in order to get his own catharsis.

He knew there wasn't anything he could say or do that would work better than to let him figure it out for himself, and he gave Yukine the room to do so.

There's clearly some kind of potential Yato sees in Yukine, and though you could argue that Yato is holding onto him so tightly is due to him being a lesser known God who's already had trouble keeping regalia, I don't think his stubbornness towards Yukine is out of his own self interest.. at least not that way.

I highly doubt that a God who knows that he might not come back would put his life on the line like this without something much deeper than it merely being too inconvenient to search for and name a new Shinki.

We see so many people suggesting and even insisting Yato get rid of Yukine, and implications that demonstrate how taboo it is for Yukine to do this to his master, and for Yato to hold on to him despite that. He doesn't even entertain the idea, and this almost kills both of them.

Throughout this volume, Hiyori is preoccupied with all the new and strange information she's learning about Yato. If it weren't for her also putting her life on the line to not only carry Yato to Kofuku's, but also to recruit Kazuma for the ablution AND provide support during the ceremony, both Yato and Yukine would've perished.

Yukine lied and denied his involvement in Yato's condition, angry and embarrassed right up until he understands that Yato isn't going to give up on him. With that realisation, he begins to confess his sins and complete the ceremony, and from this point forward there is a stronger bond between the two.

Yato's life isn't ideal and Yukine's made it clear how much he hates living under him, and though he yearned so much for his lost humanity that he began to hate the near shore, it was the humanity of others around him that ultimately saved him.

I know this is more gushing while I recount story beats, but I can't help it I really love this part. I'll probably bring it up again in future arcs because it's such an interesting anchor to frame their relationship and individual character, and provides a great reference point for how they'll develop as the plot moves along.
