TWOIAF/Fire & Blood: The Warrior's Sons and the Poor Fellows

Warning, Spoilers Ahead…

Before we continue the post-Aenys era, we should have a spotlight on the main antagonists of the Aenys/Maegor era: the Faith of the Seven.

The Faith of the Seven’s military branch, the Faith Militant, was composed of two orders: the Noble and Puissant Order of the Warrior’s Sons, and the Poor Fellows.

The Warrior’s Sons, also known as the Swords, acted as the High Septon’s personal guard and army, and were based in chapterhouses in cities and towns. The members were all knights, and most were younger sons of great houses.

Their sigil was the Warrior’s rainbow sword on black, and they wore cloaks and swordbelts with rainbow stripes.

Were the Warrior’s Sons the inspiration for Renly Baratheon’s Kingsguard attire? Was this due to a suggestion from the Tyrells?

The Poor Fellows, also known as the Stars, were numerous as they accepted members from all stations, including women. Their original purpose was to protect travelers on pilgrimages to septs and other holy sites.

Are any non-Sept Faith of the Seven holy sites mentioned in the books? I can’t think of any.

The Poor Fellows sigil was a red seven-pointed star painted on white. The sigil originated in the bloody stars that Andal warriors carved on their chests during the Andal invasions of Westeros.

In modern times, the High Sparrow’s followers are carving the star on their foreheads.

In real world terms, the Warrior’s Sons would be the Crusaders/bishops of Westeros and the Poor Fellows would be the monks.

We left off with Westeros in a state of uproar with the High Septon fanning the flames by sending the Warrior’s Sons and the Poor Fellows to harass the population into following his edicts. The High Septon has gotten away with it as Aenys refuses to use his dragon to establish his authority. Visenya, who would use Vhagar to end this rebellion, was sent to her room by Aenys. The religious rebellion continues unabated at the time of Aenys’ death.

Okay, but imagine Leona's and Jack's reaction:

Ruggie just showing a picture of his new brothers with his grandma to Jack and he just snatched it to make sure its 100% actually Ernesto and Gidel and not a hallucination. He looks back at ruggie with shock and disbelief and asks if this is a joke.

Ruggie denies it saying that she jokes about alot of things, but she takes family very seriously. Confused by the question he tries to get it back asking him if there's something wrong with the picture, but Jack immediately walks away from him saying that he needs to show Leona. Confused and interested he follows Jack to see what about his new brothers made him react like this.

When Jack shows Leona the picture he snatched it to look at it again and asks Ruggie if this is a joke. He denies it again and asks why did you two look so surprised. "Have you met them before or something?"

ASGDJDKA OH ANON I LOVE IT! Is things like this that I REALLY WANTED Ruggie to part of the event, and see him interact with Ernesto/Fellow and Gino/Gidel (T^T)

ANYWAY!!! I imagine Jack and Leona don't know whether to be outraged or worried aSDAGHGASGA Now imagine if they explain what ended up happening in the park, what Ruggie's new "brothers" did and all the chaos that occurred... Which could result in two reactions, maybe..

The first: would be Ruggie in shock, in silence already getting some gray hairs, thinking about how the hell he's going to explain this to his grandmother.

And the most likely, second possible reaction would be: he responds "Okay... and? Is that why you two are acting like this? Pff- They're not that bad, anyway, look at the hat she sewed for Gino-"

The correct answer is Yuu/MC because Fellow/Ernesto would be trying to get money, Rollo would be throwing insults at Malleus, Gidel/Gino is gonna bonk people just cause, Skully would be vibing (idk anything about him), and Yuu/MC would be making sure Ramshackle doesn't collapse from all of the chaos

Warning, Spoilers Ahead…

Maegor won the trial by Seven but was left in a comatose state. Twenty-seven days have passed as Maegor remains comatose despite the maesters’ treatment. While Maegor slept, others prepared.

The Warrior’s Sons were undecided in their next move. Some felt they had to accept Maegor as king since he won the Trial by Seven, others felt they had to obey the High Septon and fight on. Once again, what was the purpose of the Trial, that cost 13 men their lives, if it didn’t resolve anything?

The Kingsguard arrived in King’s Landing. Visenya had the group take charge of the Targaryen loyalists and surround Rhaenys’ hill.

Alyssa proclaimed her son, Aegon, the true king on Driftmark. Few paid attention to her. Aegon himself remained trapped at Crakehall, surrounded by Poor Fellows and peasants.

I wonder what Alyssa was thinking when she announced Aegon as king? Maegor had decisively claimed the crown. He had the backing of Visenya, Vhagar, and Balerion. Most lords not pledged to the Faith would be more likely to back Maegor simply because he had Balerion and Vhagar. Aenys was widely despised by this point for her weakness.  Maegor had left Alyssa and her children alone until this point – it doesn’t seem wise to put a bullseye on their backs by proclaiming Aegon king? Did Alyssa feel Maegor was going to die and she should get ahead of the game by proclaiming Aegon king? Maegor has two wives by this point and is still childless – Aegon is the ideal heir for Maegor – why provoke Maegor and Visenya’s wrath by proclaiming Aegon king?

In the Citadel, Arhcmaesters met in Conclave to debate the succession and elect a new Grandmaester. I don’t see many volunteers for the job considering Maegor beheaded the last one.

Thousands of Poor Fellows travelled to King’s Landing. The ones from the West were led by Ser Horys Hill, the ones from the south by Watt the Hewer. The mass migration to King’s Landing allowed Aegon and Rhaena Targaryen to leave Crakehall and seek shelter with Lord Lyman and Lady Jocasta Lannister of Casterly Rock. Rhaena is pregnant.

On twenty-eighth day after the Trial by Seven, a ship arrived from Pentos. On the ship were 600 sellswords and two women – Alys Harroway Targaryen and Tyanna of the Tower. Tyanna was a pale raven-haired beauty, the natural daughter of a Pentoshi magister.  Others insisted she was a tavern dancer who had risen to be a courtesan. She was rumored to be a poisoner and a sorceress as well. Some said she was Maegor’s concubine, others that she was Alys’ paramour. Why not both?

Whatever the truth of Tyanna’s origins, Visenya handed the care of Maegor to Tyanna as soon as she arrived. That gives credence to Tyanna being a witch – Visenya had to recognize something in Tyanna to hand over the care of her only son to a stranger. Visenya was rumored to practice magic so she would be able to recognize a fellow practitioner.

The next day, Maegor awoke.

Up next, Maegor is awake and the war against the Faith Militant begins.

Sword of Azrael: The rhetoric of violence

Anyway got inspired to make this after re-reading sword of azrael. Review from LOCG below a cut

From what I recall* this is the first time we see what the system looks like in jean paul valleys head. We also delve back into his guilt and status of being perpetually at war with the programming that was installed in him since he was a baby.

What I really think helps this not be just another comic is the analysis of the rhetoric around righteous violence. Jpv says that the system uses righteous fury because it's easy to manipulate, it feels good, and he's proven right. Brielle and the character of azrael (program of the system) justify the violent acts they have committed as being part of a higher power - poor fellow appeals to brielle by asking her if knowing that the people she killed were part of her finding her true path, and the fact that angels are not beholden to human morality, makes it better and Brielle says yes. Azrael (program) shuts down in horror after finding out his orders founder did not believe he was ushering in God's mercy or w/e but rather creating a tool he can use** - because of azraels actions exist without the justification of it being gods will, they are simply sin.

Jpv works against a world where murder is acceptable with the right rhetoric, and he also has to confront that he can't blame azrael/ the system on everything. The fact that azrael shuts down When he's fighting Satan, the first angel the order created, and jpv is the one who has to fight and then kill Satan, because if Satan gets back to the machinery that has kept him alive for the last 800 years, he will keep killing people in the nearby town to maintain his life. And jpv gets mad at azrael because isn't this violence supposed to be his job? If azrael doesn't do it, jpv has to accept that he has that capacity in himself, without the system, and cannot blame it on another being (which I think foils azrael really well , whereas in either case the violence committed is removed and the committer imagines he has less responsibility - in azraels case the violence is an act of God and a good thing, and becomes abhorrent when he can no longer justify it that way, and in jpvs case the violence is bad, but can be necessary however he can remove himself of the responsibility by letting the system commit it). Then jean paul valley uses this experience, of having killed Satan, to engage with azrael and admit that they are not necessarily so different.

There is a LOT of good character work and interesting rhetoric anyway is what I'm saying
