Finding a silver lining in the darkest storm
Dustin Sanchez worked as a bartender at one of the hottest beach resorts in Fort Myers beach, Florida (one of the hardest hit areas), and was planning his wedding in November.
His future was as beautiful as his wife, and life was just about to begin when Hurricane Ian visited. The community has been battered by hurricanes and survived, and this was just another one, or so they thought.
Tumblr media
Natural disasters are the norm in the United States coastal regions; but survivor stories and their HOPE are human characteristics we will never fully comprehend even amid 155-mile-per-hour catastrophic winds, heavy rains, and storms.
My perfect life was ruined, and everything I thought I had and needed in life was taken away by Hurricane Ian. I had the ideal job as a bartender at the Lani Kai hotel and beach resort for the past six years. I also lived there and awoke to the serene sound of the ocean and its atmosphere.
So when Hurricane Ian was announced, I did not think it was anything beyond the ordinary, having survived Hurricane Irma. I thought, “This is just another one, and we will all get through it.”
Was I ever so wrong as the storm arrived with a soul-wrenching stare that shook our reality? In a matter of minutes, the water rose from one foot, then two, then all the cars in the neighborhood were underwater, and the fears of families were louder than the storm, wind, and rain surging through the streets. While I pondered the extent of the damage, a palm tree fell and destroyed my new Chevy equinox, while I stood flabbergasted, my mom’s house and proposed wedding gift, crumbled like a pack of cards and was swept away by Ian. It began like every other day.
Tumblr media
Life on the Florida beach is incredible: the warm sun, white beaches, turquoise water gently hitting the beach, and lively people drinking, laughing, and sharing a joke. It seemed like just another day until it wasn’t. We hear the usual hurricane stories: a palm tree has fallen, a power line is down, and cars are swimming in the water, but life goes on. This was different. The emergency team advised beach residents to evacuate immediately, and that meant us (my fiancé and I). Even though it was not our first storm, we moved against our wishes. We had a huge family that included nine pets—a snake, three mice, three dogs, and two cats—and we could not just leave without thinking about them. We had to find floaters, in case we had to swim. The thought of losing any of them was devastating.
Tumblr media
And it was over. Ian took away my home, my car, and my life. My girlfriend stood by me, trying to encourage me about so many things. The smallest stuff irritated me. I could not think straight suddenly being homeless, car-less and a future blank as a canvas.
Things got worse. Lani Kai, where I worked, had to close due to the damage, as did other businesses such as Hooters, which was completely destroyed. FEMA and the institutions that were supposed to help could not. My application was denied, and all access to resources that could help was taken away.
I pay my taxes but am denied the most basic of rights. No one cared for me, and it was not right.
I could not think! It was too heavy to ignore; citizens’ rights before, during, and after a hurricane or disaster should be protected.
Light after the storm We were jobless and homeless and our brother offered to take us in (humans and pets) and help us care for them. I couldn’t stop myself from crying. Everyone was broken, but people were still generous and willing to help with what they had.
And as I wait for Lani Kai to finish rebuilding and reapplying for my job, my girlfriend is also hopeful that her job will likely be reopened so she can resume work. Currently, we are surviving on my pool cleaning jobs, the love and generosity of my brother, and many other people in the community.
Things are coming together again—it will not be the last, but we will always survive.

California wells run dry as drought depletes groundwater (AP) As California’s drought deepens, Elaine Moore’s family is running out of an increasingly precious resource: water. The Central Valley almond growers had two wells go dry this summer. Two of her adult children are now getting water from a new well the family drilled after the old one went dry last year. She’s even supplying water to a neighbor whose well dried up. “It’s been so dry this last year. We didn’t get much rain. We didn’t get much snowpack,” Moore said, standing next to a dry well on her property in Chowchilla, California. “Everybody’s very careful with what water they’re using. In fact, my granddaughter is emptying the kids’ little pool to flush the toilets.” Amid a megadrought plaguing the American West, more rural communities are losing access to groundwater as heavy pumping depletes underground aquifers that aren’t being replenished by rain and snow. More than 1,200 wells have run dry this year statewide, a nearly 50% increase over the same period last year, according to the California Department of Water Resources.
Knocking on Every Door, Rescuers Search Fort Myers Beach After Ian (NYT) On the third day after Hurricane Ian pulverized Fort Myers Beach, the rescuers from Florida Task Force 2 embarked on a laborious new task: to knock on every door that was still standing. It was the only way to make sure they had not missed anyone still waiting to be rescued—or someone who had perished. “Fire department!” Noel Armas, a rescue squad officer, yelled as he banged on doors at the Mariner’s Boathouse & Beach Resort, on the mangled island’s southern end, which had not been hit as hard as other parts. “Anybody need assistance?” The middle part of Fort Myers Beach, a white-sand town of about 5,600 year-round residents on Estero Island, looked as if it had been bombed. Entire homes had floated off their concrete slabs. Wooden structures were reduced to splinters. On one block, the only bit of a house left standing was its white front door. The ruins cut a jarring scene against the beautiful, deep orange glow of sunset. “Look at this paradise,” Mr. Armas said, pointing to the nightfall. Then he pointed to the shattered homes. “And then you have this.”
Hurricane Ian shakes SW Florida’s faith but can’t destroy it (AP) In darkness and despair, there were flickers of light and hope, even for Jane Compton who lost her home and possessions to Hurricane Ian’s wrath. As the storm approached last week, she and her husband found sanctuary at their Baptist church, huddling with fellow parishioners through wind, rain and worry. “Good Lord, please protect us,” Compton prayed, with her husband, Del, at her side. She compared the deluge to the biblical story Noah’s Ark, saying they had no idea when the water would stop rising. When it did, there were hallelujahs. With the storm now passed and its devastation abounding, churches across hard-hit Southwest Florida are providing a steadying force in the lives of those plunged into chaos and grief. Heartache, frustration and uncertainty now swirl in sanctuaries amid sermons about perseverance and holding on to one’s faith. The Rev. Charles Cannon, pastor at St. Hilary’s Episcopal Church, sermonized about the temporariness of the community’s losses. While much was lost, he said, not all is gone. “People think they have lost everything, but you haven’t lost everything if you haven’t lost yourself and the people you love,” Cannon said.
Cholera resurfaces in Haiti as gangs hinder access to water, hospitals (Washington Post) After three years without a new case, at least one person has died of cholera in Haiti, officials here said, stoking fear of an outbreak as widespread gang control over vast swaths of the country hinders access to fuel, clean drinking water and medical care. Cholera killed about 10,000 people in the country after the 2010 earthquake. The announcement of cholera’s potential resurgence came as the Caribbean nation confronts a confluence of humanitarian and political crises that have left many people at risk of infection and threaten to imperil a response. Violent armed gangs have tightened their chokehold on several parts of the country, at times blocking the movement of critical humanitarian aid and other supplies. The G-9 federation of gangs has for several weeks blocked access to the main fuel terminal here, forcing businesses and hospitals to reduce their hours or shut down altogether. The fuel shortages have also compelled at least one major distributor of potable water to shut down.
Brazil Braces for ‘White-Knuckle Race’ Between Bolsonaro and Lula (NYT) In the early morning hours on Monday, President Jair Bolsonaro of Brazil went to bed vindicated. The night’s election results had shown, just as he had claimed, that the polls had severely underestimated the strength of his right-wing movement. Hours later, he awoke to a new challenge: How to obtain millions more votes in just four weeks? On Oct. 30, Mr. Bolsonaro will face a leftist challenger, the former president Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, in a runoff election to lead Latin America’s largest nation. Now the contest—a matchup between Brazil’s two biggest political heavyweights—could swing either way and promises to prolong what has already been a bruising battle that has polarized the nation and tested the strength of its democracy. “Lula is still the favorite, but you can totally imagine this becoming a Bolsonaro victory,” said Oliver Stuenkel, a Brazilian political scientist. “If you add up all the numbers of the third-party candidates, there are sufficient votes out there.”
Truss’s Economic U-Turn (Foreign Policy) British Prime Minister Liz Truss has walked back plans to eliminate the top income tax rate imposed on the richest Britons, a central part of her economic agenda that had plunged the country into financial turmoil and forced the Bank of England to declare an emergency intervention. The sudden reversal is an embarrassing blow to the British leader during her first month in office, especially after she made unfunded tax cuts a key campaign pledge and then continued to defend her plans as public backlash mounted. This policy would have removed the 45 percent income tax rate on high-earning Britons who make more than 150,000 pounds ($170,000) per year. The British economy, which had already been in a fragile state, took a nosedive after the government unveiled its sweeping tax cut plans, sparking panic over the significant government borrowing required to fund them. As a cost of living crisis gripped the country, Truss’s move to cut wealthy Britons’ taxes fueled calls for her resignation while her overall economic agenda was publicly criticized by the International Monetary Fund.
Frustration with Ukraine war spills out on Russian state TV (AP) Russia’s retreat from a key Ukrainian city over the weekend elicited outcry from an unlikely crowd—state-run media outlets that typically cast Moscow’s war in glowing terms. A series of embarrassing military losses in recent weeks has presented a challenge for prominent hosts of Russian news and political talk shows struggling to find ways to paint Ukraine’s gains in a way that is still favorable to the Kremlin. Frustration with the battlefield setbacks has long been expressed in social media blogs run by nationalist pundits and pro-Kremlin analysts, and the volume grew after Ukraine’s counteroffensive last month around Kharkiv in the northeast. But it is now spilling out on state TV broadcasts and in the pages of government-backed newspapers. “The Russian defeat in Kharkiv (region) and Lyman, combined with the Kremlin’s failure to conduct partial mobilization effectively and fairly are fundamentally changing the Russian information space,” Washington-based Institute for the Study of War said in a report.
In Retreat on Ukrainian Fronts, Russia Shows Signs of Disarray (NYT) Russian forces in Ukraine were on the run Monday across a broad swath of the front line, as the Ukrainian military pressed its blitz offensive in the east and made gains in the south, belying President Vladimir V. Putin’s claims to have absorbed into Russia territories that his armies are steadily losing. Following the capture over the weekend of Lyman, a strategic rail hub and gateway to the eastern Donbas region, Ukrainian forces showed no sign of stopping, pushing eastward toward the city of Lysychansk, which Russia seized three months ago after bloody fighting. The military conscription Mr. Putin ordered on Sept. 21 to bolster his battered forces has set off nationwide turmoil and protest, bringing the war home to many Russians who had felt untouched by it. Many men have been drafted who were supposed to be ineligible based on factors like age or disability. On Monday, the governor of the Khabarovsk region in the Far East said that half of the men called up there, numbering in the thousands, should not have been drafted and had been sent home and that the region’s military commissar had been dismissed.
More Russians Flee Than Join Russian Army After War Call-Up (Bloomberg) Far more Russians have fled abroad than have enlisted in the military since President Vladimir Putin announced a mobilization to bolster his faltering invasion of Ukraine. Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu said more than 200,000 people have been conscripted into the army since Putin’s Sept. 21 order for a partial call-up, Russian news services reported Tuesday. That matches an exodus of more than 200,000 Russians to neighboring Kazakhstan alone over the same period reported Tuesday by the central Asian country’s interior minister. Almost 69,000 Russians crossed into Georgia by Sept. 30, according to Interior Ministry data in the Caucasus republic, where vast lines of vehicles built up at the land border with Russia following the mobilization announcement. The European Union said last week that 66,000 Russians had entered the bloc in the week to Sept. 25. Most came through Finland. In Mongolia, which this week offered to ease residency rules for people from Russia, border officials reported that more than 12,000 Russians entered the country by Oct. 2.
North Korea Fires Missile Over Japan in Major Escalation (NYT) North Korea on Tuesday fired an intermediate-range ballistic missile over Japan for the first time in five years, prompting a rare warning by the Japanese government for residents in two northern prefectures to seek shelter. The launch represented a major escalation by North Korea, which has conducted a flurry of missile tests in recent days as the United States held military drills in the region with South Korea and Japan. By launching a missile over Japan and toward the Pacific, North Korea heightened regional concerns over its growing nuclear capabilities, and raised the stakes in stalled diplomatic talks with Washington. The test was seen as a direct challenge to South Korea’s effort to strengthen its alliance with the United States and improve ties with Japan, a former colonial ruler of Korea with longstanding historical disputes with Seoul. The missile flew about 2,800 miles, the longest distance ever traveled by a North Korean missile, officials in Tokyo and Seoul said.

The room was nice and very clean. The restaurants offered a good variety and great views. The staff was very friendly and accommodating when we asked to check out after just one night. Would probably recommend staying here any time but during spring break – unless you’re 20 years old.
The location of the hotel was convenient to shopping and all the restaurants were in a short walking distance. The beach could not have been better. There were a lot of activities and service offered at this facility.
The beach was perfection and the WiFi worked like a dream. Everything you need is in walking distance!

The location and view were the best! Within walking distance to everything and literally steps off the beach. No balcony, but even better with a full ocean view and wall opened up to the beach with sliding full length glass windows.
Quiet at night, despite being right in the center of action near Times Square. Also liked the availability of a barbeque grill- we cooked out three nights!
We loved that it was right on the beach and the view.
Location, Location, Location. Right next to Pier and Time Square. 2-5 minute walk everywhere. Never turned on rental car. Also plenty of room at beach with umbrella rental right there. House Bloody Mary at Salty Crab next door started everyday and never had a bad dish there. Rooms little small but knew that going in as reccommended by brother-in-law. And you can tell they are putting back into it. Bathroom updated and pool in good shape.
Nothing, room was so dirty I could not walk barefoot without washing my feet. Bugs in the tub, hairs in the sink. Clock didn’t work, and commode leaked. The building was very colorful on the outside but inside was another story. Would not recomend this to anyone.

An excellent choice at Ft Myers Beach especially for families. Rooms are comfortable with fantastic views of the beach and screened in terraces. Both restaurants are quite good. They have a great set up for the beach with access to the hotel and food and beverage service. It was right on the beach with two pools. The kitchenette was an added bonus. So nice to eat breakfast and lunch in the room without having to go out to a restaurant.
Overall effort of staff to maintain its quality. Its beach, view. Surprised that the poolside rooms have beach view as well.
We traveled with our 8 and 4 year old, we had an ocean view room on the 1st floor next to the kids pool. The room was spotless upon arrival, the kitchenette had everything we needed for 4 people. The front desk was super friendly and knowledgeable. We enjoyed the kids heated pool and the free beach towels; the wristband key entry was awesome. Publix is just 5 min drive down the road which was great. I have nothing but good things to say about our stay and I would highly recommend this hotel. If you like the hustle and bustle of a very busy place I wouldn’t recommend this hotel though. We do not like crowded places so it was heaven to us.
It was very clean. Right on a beautiful beach. There was a mix up in the room we booked. Bonnie took care of us best she could.

VACATION DONE RIGHT
Tumblr media
When traveling away from home, one of the most comfortable accommodations are the places that are as safe and comfortable as the home you live in.
With that being said, if you plan on vacationing in Florida, instead of making the usual hotel reservations, why not consider staying a week or two on the beach in your own private townhouse or condo.
When you have made this type of decision, you are not only in charge of who enters your private domain, but you also will not be bothered by knocks on your door from maid service wanting to clean the room before you are ready to face the day.
When vacationing in Fort Myers, you will discover that there are a wide variety of accommodations that are offered like Fort Myers Beach condo rentals. You will be presented with one and two bedroom suites that are suitable for couples as well as larger condo units that are suitable for families.
Customers find that the units are nicely furnished and upgraded and have all of the amenities, including microwave, small refrigerator, cooktops, blenders, utensils and dinnerware. In short, you have all of the basics that will serve your needs just as if you were in your own home. Also, there are many condo units that can be selected that will have their own balcony. Some of the units will face the beach, giving you a nice ocean front view.
Other condos may resemble a cottage or villa. Once you arrive, you will find that the service throughout the resort will be top notch. In addition, you will discover that depending on where you are staying there will be many local attractions that you can participate in, i.e. local museums, parks and festivities to just name a few. If your condo rental is not located on the beach or not within walking distance, no worries, there are several different shuttles that will transport vacationers from their condo complex to the white sandy beach along the coastline.
Many vacationers will start their day fishing in Lynn Hall Memorial Park making vast attempts to catch the fish that are native to that area, such as mangrove snapper or spotted sea trout. You will also find that there are many places in Fort Myers that will tempt your palette. When you are ready to give in to your hunger, several of the eateries offer outdoor patio lunches where you can enjoy the delicacy of the seafood, such as the delectable Cajun crab cakes and the jumbo size shrimp that has been grilled to perfection.
However, there is one thing to keep in mind and that is the length of your stay.  Some of the condo units will require a minimum nights stay and most will require an individual to stay for at least a week, although there are some that will require a minimum of a two-week stay. But you will find this more geared to the luxury high-end condos. Tourists are also pleasantly surprised with the condo unit where they have booked there accommodations are equipped with a pool and or hot tub. The hot tub is a nice place to relax and rest your muscles from a busy day of touring or from a long day of shopping. In addition to your-home-away-from home condo, there are also accommodations that are available for those tourists that want to kick it up a notch. For example, you may wish to stay at a tropical luxury estate. Some of these accommodations will be located near to all mainland activities and others may be a little further out.
So, if you are planning a Floridian vacation, now is the time to begin seeking what kind of accommodations will be best suited for you without having you overextend your budget.

Vacationing in Florida means one thing You want to see that view as often as possible! We understand this and to make it easy, weve compiled our list of the 6 Best Destin Restaurants with a view. Located along scenic Hwy 98 in Miramar Beach, Royal Palm Grille has one of the best views youll find along our coastline. Its nestled into the first level of Surfside Resort with floor to ceiling windows overlooking the Gulf of Mexico. Pair that with the brand new deck they built out front AND their beach bar sitting right on the sand and youve got yourself a front row seat to the best sunsets in town. We recommend going Wednesday evenings for $3 off sushi rolls or Friday evenings for their free beach bonfires. For a little more action, check out Harry Ts Lighthouse in Harborwalk Village. The corner spot allows for a full view of the Destin bridge, as well as the channel in the Harbor. Sip a cocktail or feast on a seafood platter while watching the boats file in for the day and the sun setting behind Okaloosa Island. The expansive patio right outside their restaurant doors is one that cant be overlooked. The unobstructed view of the beach and our Emerald Waters makes 790 on the Gulf one of our top choices. Located inside the Inn at Crystal Beach, stop by for bottomless champagne every day from 11-3pm and the arguably the best (and largest) selection of bourbon along the coast. What more could you ask for? Brand new to our area, youll head a little outside Destin to hit The Gulf on Okaloosa Island .

How to Protect Your Property from Water Damage
If you’re a homeowner, nothing can prepare you for the stress and emotional turmoil when you come home to a flood. Perhaps you return to your winter retreat to find a musty odor along with mold on your walls and baseboards. In many cases, inexpensive maintenance and repairs can prevent costly and stressful water damage and mold remediation repairs and restoration.
Here are 5 important tips for preventing water damage:
CAREFULLY PLAN BEFORE YOU PLANT Plants and trees with invasive roots can grow right into your sprinkler and plumbing system. t is important to know the root structure of mature plants that can invade these structures and cause major problems. In preparation for planting, determine the location of drainage fields, pipes and septic tanks. Plan your landscaping to keep roots away from any water lines.
KEEP ROOF GUTTERS CLEAN Clogged gutters can be a major reason for water leaks into your home’s foundation, roof or basement if you live up North. Your gutters should be free of leaves, birds’ nests, sticks, and other debris that restricts the flow of water during rainy weather or a major storm. Seasonal cleaning for your gutters can go a long way toward preventing a flood or insidious leak that results in damage to building structures, furnishings and personal property.
MONITOR YOUR WATER BILL If you’re suddenly presented with a larger than usual water bill without a reasonable cause – like a toilet running or recently filling a swimming pool, consider that you may have a plumbing leak. With so many water pipes hidden behind walls and in the floors in your house, you might not know there’s a leak until the damage is done. A reputable plumber will be able to locate the source of a leaking pipe behind building structures and flooring.
USE A DRAIN SNAKE INSTEAD OF UNCLOGGING CHEMICALS Should you experience a clogged drain in your kitchen or bathroom sinks, here’s what you need to know about caustic chemicals. Although they may be convenient, they are abrasive to your pipes and a common cause of leaking pipes.  Instead, use a drain snake to clear clogs. These are easy to use and can cut through almost any clog without damaging your pipes. They will also not contaminate your air with caustic fumes that harm your health.  Drain snakes are inexpensive and available at your local hardware store. In the event that the clog cannot be cleared with a drain snake, calling a reputable plumber is your next best step to take.
NEVER POUR GREASE DOWN YOUR SINK Always avoid pouring grease down your kitchen sink. Grease will congeal and cling to your pipes leading to serious damage and blockages. Using detergent to break up grease before pouring it down the drain may help but there’s no guarantee that it’ll keep the grease from sticking to your pipes. Instead, pour grease into a container where it can be discarded in the trash after it cools and becomes sold.
