it's not the first time you agreed to go to a gala with jason, he's your friend so you'll go to the end of the world for him if he asked you to and maybe, just maybe it's like that because you've liked him for about a year and a half, half of the time you've been friends but you've convinced yourself that you stand no chance with him, jason is everything you've always wanted and for him, you're the same, all the good things on earth are nothing for him when you're around.

"would you mind it if i asked you if we could dance tonight?" you ask softly when he finds a table where you both can settle down, there's a small smile on your lips as you lean in just so jason can hear your words over the chat of everyone around and the soft instrumental music "mhm, i don't really feel like dancing, doll" jason is soft when he declines your request, he has never been one to like drawing attention on this kind of places and he knows that dancing with the prettiest girl on the gala would bring too much attention.

it brings your mood a bit down, he feels bad because in this years being your friend jason's has learnt to read through your emotions so when you nod with a small smile and tell him "it's okay, jay" he can see the lack of that pretty spark on your eyes, the few good things he can do for you seem to be useless when it's so easy for him to make you feel dissapointed because of simple things "but you can go dance if you really want, sweetheart, i'll be fine on my own here" he tries to fix it, his hand over yours rubbing soft circles as his head nudges towards the middle of the room and reluctantly you agree because you can notice how he wants to make you happy.

his eyes follow you as you stand, your figure walking away into the spaces between people while you make your way to the zone where couples are already dancing and it's there when jason regrets turning you down. there's a young man approaching you, a gentle smile as he bows when you accept to dance with him. he's been given a glass of wine, his fingers gripping at the neck of the cup when the stranger's hands are on your waist and yours lay on his shoulders, he's guiding your body witt smooth steps, making you turn around with a smile, he makes you laugh and lean into his touch.

one song and then another, jason's eyes are fixed on you and it looks like there are a few people clapping and cheering at the way you dance with someone else, the way his hands run over your waist and your back whe he turns you around, his hands caressing your arms when he pushes you just to bring you back in a close embrace and jason has now a glass of scotch on his hand, he sips it and he can feel the burn of alcohol on his throat but it's nothing compared to the pang on his chest when you glance at him and smile widely while dancing, he manages a small smile at you but turns around when the stranger kisses your hand.

he should have been the one dancing with you, the one to make you laugh and enjoy something so simple yet so beautiful; would he ever be enough to come closer to you? to be next to you and pamper you on kisses and sweet words? is he any good for you when he can't even please you with a simple dance when you're going with him everywhere just to make him feel safe? and everything that plays on his head is you dancing and giggling with someone else, someone you don't really know but that made you so happy even if it was just for a few songs.
