Ishikirimaru — the tachi forged by legendary Sanjo Arinari — a peaceful and holy sword enshrined only for the gods. Yet, beyond the intonation of his prayers, distant memories remain like wisps of smoke. Memories of a time when he was known by a different name, painted in blood, lit by lightning and thunder, and warmed by the hand of the beloved one who once wielded him.

Now, perpetually ill and dutifully cared for by his protective brothers in a remote mountain shrine, Ishikirimaru’s daily rituals of prayer and holy duties distract him from the ghosts lingering upon the threshold of his mind.

Beyond the safety and comfort of the shrine lies a great forest with a fearsome guardian who brings an ancient and pagan world to the threshold of Ishikirimaru’s quiet and orderly shine. He announces he intends to make a mate of the shrine’s gentle priest, much to Ishikirimaru’s pleased bemusement and Mikazuki Munechika’s dismay.

Oily shadows dance across the silken image of a heron among the reeds as the lamplight flickers. A whisper of silk is caught in the passing of a man who moves soundlessly across the tatami smelling of sweat, the iron tang of blood, and the sweet earthiness of incense. He perceives the lilting sigh of a woman as she strokes her long, silken hair over her shoulder, and whose dark and beautiful eyes rise to meet her lover as his master kneels to press a kiss upon her exposed nape. Even here, the air is heavy with the scent of the sea, wood-smoke, and the weight of a new dawn, as is the ever familiar sensation of his master's hand resting upon his hilt.

These are the memories of Mutsunokami Yoshiyuki, the sword of Tosa and blade of Sakamoto Ryouma.

Kasen almost feels like smiling as he watches such a delicate color bloom across his brother's features, like a flower. He reaches down and strokes the top of Izuminokami's head three times. Izuminokami's color deepens beneath his elder brother's affection, and Kasen muses at how warm and soft Izuminokami's dark hair is beneath his hand, shining like lacquer warmed in the sunlight.
