(sorry, i was out for a little while). it’s a really simple concept—just pick a hobby, split into outdoor, indoor, and the umbrella term of “tech.” all of the hobbies should be reasonably simple to start and not require a huge amount of prep work, because they’re hobbies that you hold in reserve; they’re meant to alleviate boredom or other negative emotions by engaging different senses.

outdoor hobbies: walking, jogging/running, biking, gardening, gathering, picking flowers, local species identification, even just sitting down outside & drinking something if you don’t have the energy for anything else.

indoor hobbies: sewing, cooking, baking, painting, knitting, drawing (traditionally, not digitally), embroidery, macramé, scrapbooking, origami, reading a book

“tech” hobbies: netflix/hulu/etc., specific youtube channels (picked out ahead of time), video games, programming, making pinterest boards, whatever you like doing on the computer that’s easy!

so i might pick out “gardening/cooking/netflix.” whenever i’m feeling bored, irritated, overwhelmed, or depressed, i pick out one of the three. if i think fresh air will help, i garden. if i feel like i need to feed myself and spend time in the kitchen, i cook. if i feel like nothing will help and i just need to occupy my time and sulk for a bit, i watch netflix.

of course most people have more than one hobby per category, but this helps me keep my hobbies diverse and ensure that i’m not using any one hobby as a ‘crutch’ (often an issue for people who are too dependent on their tech hobbies, which is really easy to fall into). it also ensures that i pretty much always have something to do and am not just sitting around thinking about how bored/mad/depressed i am!
