USA Ballot Measures Nov. 2024

41 states (and Washington DC) have ballot measures this year! Even if your state's electoral college result isn't in question, you may have ballot measures to vote on alongside the presidential election and state-wide elections.

Below the read more link is an alphabetical list of each state with ballot measures. Each state name links to the Ballotpedia.org page for that state's ballot measures, which will be updated with new developments as election day nears (some ballot measures are still tied up in court as of when I'm making this post in late September, so the approved ballot measures may change before you vote). Ballotpedia has information on each ballot measure, including what a yes/no would mean, arguments for and against, who supports/opposes each measure, and the full text of the measure.

Today our the power grid in the town that our biggest LGS is located decided to fail, a typical sight in Puerto Rico. The state/colonial government has destroyed our infrastructure. This November 5th I hope we, as an island , select the governor that will start doing real work to start our separation from The United States, and work for a future where Puertoricans don’t depend on another country for its goods, and most importantly, Food. Puerto Rico needs to stand on its own to start healing from the damage our over 500 years of colonialism has done to our country and our people.

We need to heal from plunder and genocide brought by the Spaniards. We need to heal from the experiments done in our women from scientists in the name of the health of the mainland. We need to heal in the name of our people who have died in the wars of another country. We need to heal from the settler colonialism and the dreams of the Puerto Rico without Puertoricans the pro-statehood party believes in. We need to heal to stand tall and do business with other countries without the intervention of a third party. We need to heal so no one call us an island of garbage. We need to heal so our future generations have a place to live. We need to heal because we want the diaspora to return to their rightful home, the home of Puertoricans.

if you are downloading online resources

please be mindful of the following:

-organize your shit. name pdfs descriptively, and categorize them by subject or whatever works best for you. you don't want to look through your files a year from now and have to trawl through an unsorted mess of files with strings of numbers for names.

-if you're able, make multiple backups in multiple places of things you don't want to lose. this is a huge issue in digital archiving because drives can fail and get corrupted with time, even when you take the best possible care of them. this usually takes place over a long-ish period of time, but you're better safe than sorry. keep a copy on your computer and on a flash/external drive at least. flash drives are pretty cheap and can have capacity anywhere from 2-64 gb generally, plenty of space for pdfs, text, and html files.

the Long-Hauler Advocacy Project is asking people with long covid (and caregivers for people with long covid) to fill out their survey about the Social Security Disability process

they're trying to gather information that they can use in advocating to reform the disability application process

they are asking for responses from anyone with long covid, whether you've applied to SSDI or not (one of the things they are gathering data on is the reasons why people haven't applied.)

Australia is planning on banning under 16s from using social media.

So so many reasons this is a stupid idea but the main one is actually, counter-intuitively, ppl's online safety.

Grown ups know how to cross the road safely because they are taught as children. They get to practice with parental supervision when they're kids.

You keep kids off social media then give them unlimited access at 16 and they'll have no frame of reference, no supervision, no working knowledge of how to fact check etc. If you actually want ppl to be safe online, make it part of education.

When discussing Animal Farm in English, talk about how to analyse ideas that sound good but actually result in inequality in practice and then pull up some questionable tweets.

When teaching kids how to research for their next essay, give them a fb rant and show them how to verify the info.

And then whoever is teaching them about personal responsibility should introduce them to tag blocking on tumblr. Show them how to curate their own experience.
