A week of riots in Hamburg - a summary

The last days have been pretty intense. From Tuesday on we witnessed several protests, some peaceful and some violent ones.

Tuesday

"Massencornern" at Neuer Pferdemarkt (to corner: the current urban custom of sitting/standing on the the sidewalk and drinking beer with friends) which gets dissolved round midnight and people occupying parks with their tents who get chased away by the police.

Wednesday

A peaceful rave demonstration through the city, it is chill and very fun.

Thursday

The "Welcome to Hell" demonstration with a huge black block. It escalates quite quickly. The policestops the demonstration after a few hundred meters since approximately 1000 people are in disguise. Policemen confront the crowd and quite soon someone starts throwing bottles and fire crackers. Police attack with pepper spray and batons, everyone gets chased away from the place, cars are set on fire a few streets away, a “pink block” keeps on demonstrating, it is chaotic. Protesters reassemble at another place afterwards and restart the demonstration. They get to march for quite a while until police stop them again for reasons unknown to me and that's when riots start again. At Schulterblatt autonomists start throwing bottles at police cars, they answer by coming with hundreds and water canons, they stop the demonstration again. My friends and me witness police attackaing people again, one of us gets peppersprayed for no reason at all, we leave and get to their place safely afterwards.

Friday

Protesters block the roads to the G20 summit with sit-insand manage to delay the convoys for several minutes, in Altona cars are set on fire and an IKEA gets attacked, rumours of protesters stealing a digger and police using firearms are spread. A small peaceful gathering takes place at Reeperbahn with music and a small pride event, while it gets very intense again at Sternschanze. Radicals start fires on the streets and stand on rooftops, police can barely intervene because they might get attacked by them from above with stones. Somehow my friends and me find each other in the mess, we stick together and withdraw to a sidestreet. Some can’t help themselves and and have to look at the happenings in between. Police puts out the fire with water canons, containing  pepper spray, it’s in the air everywhere. Supermarkets and an apple store get destroyed and robbed. I sleep at my friends’ place again because I cannot go home.

Saturday

We join the "Grenzenlose Solidarität" (unlimited soildarity) demonstration where we spot disguised autonomists in the crowd but everything stays peaceful.   With a cargo bike and two crates of beer we march/drive through the city. In the late evening there aremore riots again at Sternschanze. Via livestream one can observe police chasing away protesters again with water guns, using quite an amount of pepper spray, there were burning barricades again and people throwing things. Throughout the night there are more games of cat and mouse.

Sunday

A demonstration takes place at Harburg for the protesters who got captured. The residents of Hamburg start cleaning up the streets. One can still hear helicopters and police sirens but everything seems to calm down slowly.

Yesterday on bus I saw this massive police 🚔 and ambulance 🚑 presence at the junction for Queen's Ave and Alison's Rd. Also the bottom of Hospital Hill in Aldershot was partly blocked by a cop car.
